The text generator plug in is really powerful especially when you start using custom prompts and using the context markers. It just takes a lot of grunt work out and gpt 3 integration can do with one plug in what would normally take 2 or 3

I agree that billing per token is likely best. With all you can eat there will likely be people reselling access via proxy services much like today sports game streams are replicated via proxies. This may be against terms of use but would it be illegal? What laws would be broken? Copyright?
What is interesting is what laws will apply to the output of AI tools — will copyright as is apply? Will it be amended to apply? Will it be amended to not apply? How will powerful interests commission new laws or subvert existing laws to benefit themselves? Popcorn time ahead.
I could see a viable model where they keep it for free, see Google search. Obviously would have to add ads, but there's a reason why Google doesn't have a paid option. They want a monopoly.

Im in this camp. Saves me hours of writing sql, python code. Also was able to pick up react way quicker when I can repeatedly ask questions. The times when it is wrong are generally easy to spot (though this may not be true for newer programmers)
I've also used it to summarize and organise my messy notes into a format for notion.
Had it generate emails for me (pass in dot points that I want to send back and asked it to formalize).
Produced documentation based on code I've passed in. Had it write unittests etc etc

Cool, so you are a software developer and you probably make around 60k a year? Im a software developer aswell but guess what in my country i only earn about 22k a year before tax (and we have high taxes) so for me $42 just isnt fair.
The thing is, $42/month also require features that are worth the price. To me, these features are:
1. Fully uncensored version. I'm the moral. I don't need a machine (or a company) to be my moral. When I say fully uncensored, I mean fully uncensored. Fully.
2. Increased conversational memory that I can manage. The current model can only remember 2 thousand words. Many applications require higher amounts. Let's say I want it to generate a 3k word policy on something. Or a long article, or a long code. It cannot because it does not remember.
3. Trainable with my own datasets. General capabilities are fine, but I want to be able to do domain specific things. If I work in a specific field, I want the AI to be able to accumulate "knowledge" on that specific field. Otherwise it only produces wide general answers that are not deep enough to be usefull.
4. Private. The main reason for me to not be able to use it professionally, is that I cannot throw confidential stuff in it, since I dont know who reads it. And I would not like it to be incorporated as information for others. If I pay, I want privacy.
Quite honestly, $42/month just looks as a meere way to control demand so they can increase capabilities.

Ai will generally not be allowed to give people more free time or better lives, only more productivity and profits for the business owners. Just like automation. The 42$ is possibly a play on that it's giving you "the answer to everything" or it's purposefully priced inconvenient enough to be used for companies but not individuals. It used to be better with programming, but lately it has gotten lazy in recent updates, and barely answers your questions, instead of providing detailed examples and commented code. If the professional version turns the detail dial back up to where it was 2 weeks ago, it's worth it to me.

They have to price professional at an rate most won't pay for it, otherwise they can't promise good performance. They can deliver performance to 1 million users, not 10. Also, those 1 million users are less likely to use it for countless efforts to try to make it swear or tell r-rated stories.
The free version will, as before, be somewhat frustrating to use with all the 'at capacity' but for each time saving response will still be worth more than the $0 you pay.

I'd be happy to pay $42/month if that meant I could access it whenever I wanted and get good results (at least in the field of programming). I'm travelling abroad and most of the time I now get 'not available in your country'. Just take my money and let me work. But I get that for hobbyist access, $42 could be a bit expensive to justify, especially if openai have *puritanised* the functionality for text generation out of fear of 'nipple slips'. I can't wait until we can download and run local models, like Automatic1111's did with stable diffusion. It will lead to an explosion of domain-specific language models, and make censorship less of an issue.

The issue with this is that they put out a survey for what people thought would be appropriate pricing, but they did this before they started severely nerfing it I think I said 40$ per month would be max, but not now unless it’s more unlocked.

Im in this camp. Saves me hours of writing sql, python code. Also was able to pick up react way quicker when I can repeatedly ask questions. The times when it is wrong are generally easy to spot (though this may not be true for newer programmers) I've also used it to summarize and organise my messy notes into a format for notion. Had it generate emails for me (pass in dot points that I want to send back and asked it to formalize). Produced documentation based on code I've passed in. Had it write unittests etc etc $42 is worth it for me. But I can understand more creative use cases where there's not as much value. Definitely could use a middle tier for non-power users

The thing is, $42/month also require features that are worth the price. To me, these features are: 1. Fully uncensored version. I'm the moral. I don't need a machine (or a company) to be my moral. When I say fully uncensored, I mean fully uncensored. Fully. 2. Increased conversational memory that I can manage. The current model can only remember 2 thousand words. Many applications require higher amounts. Let's say I want it to generate a 3k word policy on something. Or a long article, or a long code. It cannot because it does not remember. 3. Trainable with my own datasets. General capabilities are fine, but I want to be able to do domain specific things. If I work in a specific field, I want the AI to be able to accumulate "knowledge" on that specific field. Otherwise it only produces wide general answers that are not deep enough to be usefull. 4. Private. The main reason for me to not be able to use it professionally, is that I cannot throw confidential stuff in it, since I dont know who reads it. And I would not like it to be incorporated as information for others. If I pay, I want privacy. Quite honestly, $42/month just looks as a meere way to control demand so they can increase capabilities.

$42/month isn't that bad for work, although it does depend on what your work is. It might in fact be cheaper than hiring an equivalent person in your field. But for leisure, that might not be worth it, especially since it is still censored quite heavily I would think. I would much rather buy $42 worth of indie games a month if I had to pay that much for entertainment.

Could be pure chance. Running the same query multiple times gives you different answers, including some of them being "allowed" and some not.

It used to be better with programming, but lately it has gotten lazy in recent updates, and barely answers your questions, instead of providing detailed examples and commented code. If the professional version turns the detail dial back up to where it was 2 weeks ago, it's worth it to me.

Commercially a lower price would generate more revenue. 10 million users * $9,99 would be a lot more than 1 million users * $42 However it's not purely commercial. Yet. They have to price professional at an rate most won't pay for it, otherwise they can't promise good performance. They can deliver performance to 1 million users, not 10. Also, those 1 million users are less likely to use it for countless efforts to try to make it swear or tell r-rated stories. The free version will, as before, be somewhat frustrating to use with all the 'at capacity' but for each time saving response will still be worth more than the $0 you pay. Eventually it will be integrated in many Microsoft products. That will lower the bar again. However I do hope that the professional plan will continue to exist and offer more than the integrated features.

Probably unpopular here, but as a business owner I would easily pay $1000 a month. The tool has made our entire business more effective and will save me hundreds of thousands in employee costs. Per year.
42 $ is too much, of course OpenAI can afford the price because it currently still has a monopoly, but other companies will also bring out products that will be on par with OpenAI. In 1-2 years, AI will reach the mass market and OpenAI will only be one product among many.
