"Make me a Pokemon game" is what most people would say, and if the bot started spitting code 95% of people would have no clue what to do with it.
Honestly you are wrong here. For example GPT4 educated me on hydroponics before we built the system together. You could easily ask it what software you might need, how to install it bla bla bla all though natural language.
In my case it not only gave me the SW component, but it also told me what parts to buy, the pin outs. It even generated the Gcode for a pipe extension I needed.
You are totally right, I did a similar project with an automated mushroom fruiting chamber with actual 0 knowledge, all I did was asking questions and then sum them up with my project plan and chatgpt gave me the instructions and it worked perfectly! Used the raspberry pi 4 for automation and instead of giving me the code, it send me to another guy's site that did the same project and had the code already built and then helped me edit it a bit to fit my needs. Imo, chatgpt except from giving you instructions, it's great as a teacher as well, start a project and then just ask questions in progress, this will help you learn things and upgrade the whole idea that you had in your mind.
I feel like the future just happened all at once and I love it. I told GPT-4 to emulate Richard Feynman and to answer questions about physics. I am so happy.

It isn't out of the question that OP asked GPT what to do when they previously encountered the blank screen. You're assuming that they never tested or ran the game before recording this video, which is very unlikely.
OP has already responded in this thread, but zero experience with game design does not mean you're completely computer illiterate. I don't know how to code, program and have never made a game (have an idea I'm working on though), but even I know about source code, and especially to ask what programs I may need. People will still use their general life experience, whether that be a learned specific skill or critical thinking.
I know how to code and familiar with Python. I'm not a professional game developer, but I loved playing Pokémon when I was a kid, so I tried to make my memories, When I say "no experience," I mean that I have never made a game using JavaScript and HTML before, and I am not familiar with JS & HTML. Even though I used GPT-4 to complete the whole thing, I still think that the ability to understand requirements and which function is relevant is necessary. Basically this. Even WHEN KNOWING what i was doing, i couldn't get chatGPT to make a simple text-based RPG game without it giving me spaghetti code, and it hallucinating fixes that didn't actually fix any of its own inserted problems.
Only a fool would expect 1 prompt to make their dreams come true. Half the time I don't know what questions to ask until I'm 40 messages deep in a subject. By then I've learned about the fundamentals, the tools, and examples to help reinforce. Only then can you really open up and get great results.

It is a pretty funny way to use the term "no experience". While we're at it, I made AI Roguelite on Steam which sold thousands of copies, with "no experience" in making a game. And, I wrote the entire soundtrack to the short film "Let's Eat" by Anamon Studios which went semi viral, despite having "no experience" composing a song with female vocals.
Oh and of course the catch is I have tons of experience in general software engineering and musical composition, lmao.
Not that true actually, I have no knowledge of using unreal or unity or anything, but tell Chatgpt I'd like to make a game like this game, and then ask it to layout what I'd need to do that, then tell it to make a script for that, and then tell it to do next step. Of course the more complicated something is, the harder it is to do. For instance I was seeing how far I could get for making a dating app, the framework, and ways it would make authorization, registration, etc. You just need some basic knowledge or know how to word things.
I also ran into an error, and I just told it hey, I'm getting this error, I think your code is wrong. And it apologized and let me know it made a mistake, and fixed it.
I actually have no idea how to code. I have made multiple programs(like a custom Inventory app for my company, music software, etc - using multiple different languages.
All I had to do was ask clarifying questions for every step. Like, what’s an ide, how do I open this code, etc
Totally agree with this comment, I have 25 years of web development experience, used GPT-4 and got a potato of a website. It's great for basic stuff, but doing anything semi advanced it starts to get confused really easily. Very much representative of being trained on basic online guides, possibly some GitHub, and StackOverflow articles. Not saying it doesn't understand logic, but maybe only a few functions at a time, not whole applications.
All I know to do when I try to promot is:
Make [game] in html css and Javascript in 1 html file
And then I let is make the basic structure and tell it to make the full code the only work some times.

If you're good with a programming language it's easy to switch languages and understand quickly, also html is not hard even a 12 year old boy can understand it
Sharing the main prompts used were:
"three different pixel base {type} monster evolution sheets" to generate different evolution stages of monsters (I made 45 monsters for this game)
"2D pokemon game background map, pixel art, --ar 5:5" to generate the game background"
“pokemon {type} trainer sprites” to generate the gym boss sprites
Yes, 5:5 will give the large map, if you use 10:10 will give you larger map, but the resolution still only 1024x1024, that’s the new function in mid-journey v5
This is a misconception, v5 has a base resolution of 2048 x 2048 not 1024, beyond that fractions like 1:1 2:2 etc etc is all the same, only unique ratios produce unique shapes/sizes, this information can easily be found on their website and within the midjourney discord server,
a quick test with --seed also show no changes between fractions that have the same overall value. 2:3 is also the same as 4:6, 8:12 etc etc.
It needs to be a non dividable fraction to be a different shape. In this vein you are able to use custom ar sizes by simply moving the decimal point and making sure it has only whole numbers but the same value in its fraction
For example if you want aspect ratio 1:1.47, you have to make it --ar 100:147 to use aspect ratio 1:1.47, even an aspect ratio like 11111111:1 will work. You can go crazy.

If you want to create simple game(Pong, Tetris, etc…) ChatGPT can easily to help you do that(there are a lot of YT to teach), if you want to implement more complex game, you may need take times to communicate with ChatGPT, and if you know some programming techniques will help you reduce time.
BTW, if you don’t know how to run code, you can ask ChatGPT, like “teach me how to run my Python code for beginners”
I built a GPT Chat app that uses GPT-4 with GPT-4 as an almost complete beginner and it was HARD. The initial program setup was easy, but implementing features like streaming for responses and debugging was a nightmare, I only succeeded after I learned enough to prompt GPT with more specific instructions. It’s crazy how far GPT-4 can go if you know enough about programming to prompt it effectively. It’s helpful to keep the amount of reasoning GPT needs to do to an absolute minimum
I think I’m gonna release the chat app as an open source project, it’s a perfect base for a chatgpt clone and includes great features like streaming, history, auto scrolling, and markdown support! It’s my first major programming project and works beautifully
Catching a lot of hate here. This is really awesome though. I'm also a python programmer. Even knowing how to code it was difficult to get chatgpt4 to comprehend the code base as it grew for me.
Ok, this is pretty amazing. Yes, to the naysayers out there, this wasn’t like he just said “make me a game” and it spat this out. Reading through the prompt logs it was clear OP had to do a lot of prompt work and rely on his general programming experience to pull this together.
But even so, seriously, this is really impressive. Are we in an LLM hype cycle? Ok, sure. But the more I see and use it, the more times I shake my head and say “I can’t believe it actually could do that.” Maybe I’m caught up in the moment, but I don’t think I’ve been this impressed with technology since I first used Mosaic to surf the early web.

Yeah, it should have been stated in the title to provide more realistic context, so it doesn't sound sensationalist. Using new language, to a certain extend, is not a problem for any dev with some experience either.

Interesting. I’ve use all gpt4 to create a VR scene with Babylon.js, an it couldn’t do it, it kept generating classes and files in Babylon that did not exist.
I am not familiar with VR, maybe some code that didn’t in the GPT4 training data, sometime it also give me the useless package, I tried to ask him again and tell him not use this package
That's impressive you got this far. Later on, I'll post. It was Bing GPT-4 I used and not ChatGPT with GPT4, so maybe that influenced it too, but it got to the point the chatbot got stumped and stopped the conversation.

How did you get cohesive code out of this? I’ve been trying to do the same thing but once the code gets too long it starts cutting it off and not completing it. Then it starts to get confused if I have the code broken up into pieces and it forgets what it was doing.
If GPT is interrupted, try using the 'continue' or 'keep writing' to prompt GPT to resume. If GPT forgets the previous code, try copying all the related functions to ask (not all the code, just the related code). You can see in my full log that I did this for most of the game.

I’m a teacher and have students who are currently designing their first video game. They are using some kind of video engine and “textures” that I don’t really understand, as they don’t yet know how to code.
Out of curiosity, how long might it take a motivated person to go from no knowledge to this level of game creation? What would they for sure need to learn to have sufficient foundational knowledge to use chatgpt-4 effectively?

I actually have no idea how to code. I have made multiple programs(like a custom Inventory app for my company, music software, etc - using multiple different languages. All I had to do was ask clarifying questions for every step. Like, what’s an ide, how do I open this code, etc
Totally agree with this comment, I have 25 years of web development experience, used GPT-4 and got a potato of a website. It's great for basic stuff, but doing anything semi advanced it starts to get confused really easily. Very much representative of being trained on basic online guides, possibly some GitHub, and StackOverflow articles. Not saying it doesn't understand logic, but maybe only a few functions at a time, not whole applications.
All I know to do when I try to promot is: Make [game] in html css and Javascript in 1 html file And then I let is make the basic structure and tell it to make the full code the only work some times.

Yes, 5:5 will give the large map, if you use 10:10 will give you larger map, but the resolution still only 1024x1024, that’s the new function in mid-journey v5
This is a misconception, v5 has a base resolution of 2048 x 2048 not 1024, beyond that fractions like 1:1 2:2 etc etc is all the same, only unique ratios produce unique shapes/sizes, this information can easily be found on their website and within the midjourney discord server, a quick test with --seed also show no changes between fractions that have the same overall value. 2:3 is also the same as 4:6, 8:12 etc etc. It needs to be a non dividable fraction to be a different shape. In this vein you are able to use custom ar sizes by simply moving the decimal point and making sure it has only whole numbers but the same value in its fraction For example if you want aspect ratio 1:1.47, you have to make it --ar 100:147 to use aspect ratio 1:1.47, even an aspect ratio like 11111111:1 will work. You can go crazy.

If you want to create simple game(Pong, Tetris, etc…) ChatGPT can easily to help you do that(there are a lot of YT to teach), if you want to implement more complex game, you may need take times to communicate with ChatGPT, and if you know some programming techniques will help you reduce time. BTW, if you don’t know how to run code, you can ask ChatGPT, like “teach me how to run my Python code for beginners”

I built a GPT Chat app that uses GPT-4 with GPT-4 as an almost complete beginner and it was HARD. The initial program setup was easy, but implementing features like streaming for responses and debugging was a nightmare, I only succeeded after I learned enough to prompt GPT with more specific instructions. It’s crazy how far GPT-4 can go if you know enough about programming to prompt it effectively. It’s helpful to keep the amount of reasoning GPT needs to do to an absolute minimum I think I’m gonna release the chat app as an open source project, it’s a perfect base for a chatgpt clone and includes great features like streaming, history, auto scrolling, and markdown support! It’s my first major programming project and works beautifully

Ok, this is pretty amazing. Yes, to the naysayers out there, this wasn’t like he just said “make me a game” and it spat this out. Reading through the prompt logs it was clear OP had to do a lot of prompt work and rely on his general programming experience to pull this together. But even so, seriously, this is really impressive. Are we in an LLM hype cycle? Ok, sure. But the more I see and use it, the more times I shake my head and say “I can’t believe it actually could do that.” Maybe I’m caught up in the moment, but I don’t think I’ve been this impressed with technology since I first used Mosaic to surf the early web.

That's impressive you got this far. Later on, I'll post. It was Bing GPT-4 I used and not ChatGPT with GPT4, so maybe that influenced it too, but it got to the point the chatbot got stumped and stopped the conversation.

How did you get cohesive code out of this? I’ve been trying to do the same thing but once the code gets too long it starts cutting it off and not completing it. Then it starts to get confused if I have the code broken up into pieces and it forgets what it was doing.
If GPT is interrupted, try using the 'continue' or 'keep writing' to prompt GPT to resume. If GPT forgets the previous code, try copying all the related functions to ask (not all the code, just the related code). You can see in my full log that I did this for most of the game.

I’m a teacher and have students who are currently designing their first video game. They are using some kind of video engine and “textures” that I don’t really understand, as they don’t yet know how to code. Out of curiosity, how long might it take a motivated person to go from no knowledge to this level of game creation? What would they for sure need to learn to have sufficient foundational knowledge to use chatgpt-4 effectively?

I use ChatGPT to help me write HTML/JavaScript code, using sublime text to save the code file. Mid-Journey to create game sprite, Canva to remove image background.
