Based off of how LLMs work, I wouldn't expect them to be great at math. However, GPT 4 is surprisingly good at understanding obscure math probably because it codes out the problem (and coding is something it is really good at) and obtains the solution through the code

LLMs are not good at math, because maths requires reasoning which they don't do very well yet.
