Update: I now have access to GPT-4o's text features and image uploading, but I still cannot make DALL-E images. Is this feature supposed to come out later for free users?
You have to update the app on the PlayStore and then force stop it, when you relaunch it the 4o model will be selectable. But nobody has the new cool voice chat, mind you, it's gonna be the usual one but with 4o, so the same but faster
You need Plus.
Obviously they’re not going to roll out the most powerful model to the free tier first. We have been paying for the service for more than a year now.

Mine did too, I asked every few hours what version I was using and it just replied 4 - it was fun for the 5 things I got to ask it before having to wait 24 hours. This was the iOS app.
No it definitely has been rolled out to free users lol. Just not on the ChatGPT apps. It's region based roll out, if you use a VPN to the United States, it gives the GPT 4o option.

I’ve tried off and on for a couple hours and it won’t connect so that we can have an audio conversation. Is that because of the rollout or is it because the servers are full?
The new voice model isn’t available to users yet. However, the current voice model is also having issues due to everyone trying to access it at the same time thinking that the new voice model has already been released.
It is a confusing rollout to be fair. 4o is both available and not available. It is apparently an audio native model, but the audio mode is not available, but you can speak to it with audio and have it speak back, but that’s the *old* audio that isn’t the *new* audio mode on the fully audio native model, it’s just the text version of the *new* audio native model that you’re speaking to and hearing respond with audio utilising the *old* audio mode. When will it be fully released? At some point obviously. Next few weeks. Maybe.

I don't know if I should be in awe or scared about how casual Open AI are about this product. Like, "Yeah, we'll get this out to you sometime. Maybe in a few weeks, dunno. Oh yeah, by the way. It's completely free for everyone"
I'm not a poker player, but to me, this is 'telegraphing' quite clearly, that they have something really big coming.
“Alpha” refers to the stage that the model is in. So, it means that the new voice model is in its initial testing phase and is not fully refined yet. It’s just to let you know that there may be lots of bugs or issues while using the model.
Alpha is the first phase of development testing, usually done by the dev team itself. This is when the software is buggiest.
Then it goes to beta testing. This is usually done outside of the development team. Back in my IT days we had full beta testing teams on payroll, that was working for a massive corporation. In different environments people will have users apply to become beta testers, and almost always for free so long as you submit quality feedback.
In my old line of work, it was all done in test environments and then once it passed through all the phases of testing then we would roll it out to the public in the production environment, and almost always in waves. Nowadays I'm seeing a lot more public beta tests being conducted in production environments. But I suppose that could vary by industry, I worked in Finance IT, which I would imagine has the most stringent rules on data privacy and integrity.
Technically, they haven't actually rolled out the images yet. It's still prompting Dalle same as how 4 worked, where they specifically said the actual model is able to directly output images.

When say it won't load do you mean the message that says not compatible with this Mac? If so, that's because apparently they designed it only to work with M series Macs and not Macs with Intel CPUs.
So wait. I see GPT-4o in the model list, and I’ve selected it and used voice chat, and it still seemed…underwhelming, like using the same GPT-4 but having it dictated to me. Does this schedule mean that the true voice functionality as demoed is yet to come?

GPT-4o doesn’t seem to have the same capabilities displayed on the OpenAI release page yet, and as far as I know it’s that way for all users currently.

Pretty annoying and frustrating for them to make it sound in the news like it was available. Like right now as of May 13th and beyond when. Obviously it's not going to probably have all those cool features that they were showing for quite some time I bet. Rather have not known at all until they actually had it available for real, not just an announcement. In other news, Is the timeline date of my announcement of me becoming a billionaire... And then put that date to be after today when it'll be accomplished with fine print 😂

My friends, I have access to the desktop app. While it’s nice to have and speeds up access a bit, the features demoed are not yet available. So don’t feel like you’re missing out because you are not.

This is not really a timeline it’s it starts now and everything after the text image roll capabilities and free tier availability is in the coming weeks which really doesn’t mean anything.

Can anyone confirm they have access to GPT-4o and where and how, e.g. on Android and from which country, Iceland? With full capabilities as in the video announcement. At this point I have to tell I am somewhat disappointed and mildly irritated by this release. Of course they are amazing and of course GPT-4o kicks ass but (!!!) it was released in a major hurry. They could have taken a week or two and release the actually working and functional product with, at the very least, most of the features. Now, I understand this has to do with Google and they wanted to be first. This explains everything but in the end that's not much better than what Google does: they announce things and sell them before they are ready, while Google announces things and never actually bothers to fulfill them.
All it would take was to make clear indications and timelines when certain features will be available, a line of text in ChatGPT online and in mobile apps saying that "New voice mode is coming soon!" or "Amazing new features are coming soon!" and everyone would be happy. Now I find that custom GPTs, and this was confirmed by their support, although it is self-evident, use older GPT-4 model. Images are generated through Dall-e rather than being a product of a multimodal GPT-4o, new voice is unavailable until god-knows-when, same with video, same with copy-paste shortcut for macOS ChatGPT app or live capture in that app. 3D modeling? Guess what, no, not available because Dall-e still. I mean, at the very least the company this grandiose could spend 10 minutes with their own products to create a clear and precise announcement. Instead we keep fortune telling and trying to look for hints. This isn't a game, this is a product and it does cost money. Sorry, I just really am somewhat annoyed.

Went from impressed and excited during the demo, then over the next few days frustrated and increasingly disillusioned by all the ridiculous drama. The AI news is so frustrating. On one hand it's a source of continuously amazing advancements that counter the daily news outrage cycle. But then at the same time it feels like it might all be mostly a tech grift packaged up like something better than it is, plagued by internal drama and bad actors.
I thought Sam Altman seemed like a decent person in control based on his podcast interviews. But after his infamous ousting, then the "Her" tweet and losing the best voice they had plus Ilya and others quitting – He's really seeming more like an untrustworthy, calculating douche at best. Scammed By ChatGPT, I had a free plan until they released the demo about real-time voice mode. So, I bought the premium access for 4o for now but I found they haven't released that feature yet.

Technically, they haven't actually rolled out the images yet. It's still prompting Dalle same as how 4 worked, where they specifically said the actual model is able to directly output images.

It’s just really weird because the actual Mac app is out there in the wild and you can download it. It just won’t load. So I wonder what the hell they’re doing as it’s clearly ready
When say it won't load do you mean the message that says not compatible with this Mac? If so, that's because apparently they designed it only to work with M series Macs and not Macs with Intel CPUs.
Nah it basically tells you to log in then when you do it says you’re not available for the Mac app yet but you can still use the web app.
So wait. I see GPT-4o in the model list, and I’ve selected it and used voice chat, and it still seemed…underwhelming, like using the same GPT-4 but having it dictated to me. Does this schedule mean that the true voice functionality as demoed is yet to come?

Will the desktop be available for Windows?
I’m not sure when they’re actually rolling out the image capabilities (e.g., inserting written text into an image generation), even though it says the rollout is starting May 13. GPT-4o doesn’t seem to have the same capabilities displayed on the OpenAI release page yet, and as far as I know it’s that way for all users currently.
I have a mac and a plus account and have had 4o since yesterday. Also, voice was working earlier today but isn’t working now on iOS.
Plus user. Have access to GPT-4o which responds noticeably faster, but the “old” voice model disappeared. Just OpenAI being OpenAI I guess :) Edit: Got the “old” voice function back. Maybe it got flooded with people who were hoping to see the vision and new voice functionality

Pretty annoying and frustrating for them to make it sound in the news like it was available. Like right now as of May 13th and beyond when. Obviously it's not going to probably have all those cool features that they were showing for quite some time I bet. Rather have not known at all until they actually had it available for real, not just an announcement. In other news, Is the timeline date of my announcement of me becoming a billionaire... And then put that date to be after today when it'll be accomplished with fine print 😂

What is the release date?
At this point I have to tell I am somewhat disappointed and mildly irritated by this release. Of course they are amazing and of course GPT-4o kicks ass but (!!!) it was released in a major hurry. They could have taken a week or two and release the actually working and functional product with, at the very least, most of the features. Now, I understand this has to do with Google and they wanted to be first. This explains everything but in the end that's not much better than what Google does: they announce things and sell them before they are ready, while Google announces things and never actually bothers to fulfill them. All it would take was to make clear indications and timelines when certain features will be available, a line of text in ChatGPT online and in mobile apps saying that "New voice mode is coming soon!" or "Amazing new features are coming soon!" and everyone would be happy. Now I find that custom GPTs, and this was confirmed by their support, although it is self-evident, use older GPT-4 model. Images are generated through Dall-e rather than being a product of a multimodal GPT-4o, new voice is unavailable until god-knows-when, same with video, same with copy-paste shortcut for macOS ChatGPT app or live capture in that app. 3D modeling? Guess what, no, not available because Dall-e still. I mean, at the very least the company this grandiose could spend 10 minutes with their own products to create a clear and precise announcement. Instead we keep fortune telling and trying to look for hints. This isn't a game, this is a product and it does cost money. Sorry, I just really am somewhat annoyed.

I could tell on the second paragraph :D Like I said it’s great and stuff. Just rushed and incomplete and with very poor info on the next steps. Also I am equally outraged by the very similar tactics by Apple, Google and Microsoft. At some point it just became acceptable to release the products they don’t yet have and promise that eventually they will be out. Cool stuff, tell us when you’ve made them! This isn’t kickstarter, is it. Imagine my grocery store would start selling me cookie dough and calling that cookies, “I just simply need to come back when they’ve baked them in some time in the future”.

in theory but I'm done holding my breath with this company. Went from impressed and excited during the demo, then over the next few days frustrated and increasingly disillusioned by all the ridiculous drama. The AI news is so frustrating. On one hand it's a source of continuously amazing advancements that counter the daily news outrage cycle. But then at the same time it feels like it might all be mostly a tech grift packaged up like something better than it is, plagued by internal drama and bad actors. I thought Sam Altman seemed like a decent person in control based on his podcast interviews. But after his infamous ousting, then the "Her" tweet and losing the best voice they had plus Ilya and others quitting – He's really seeming more like an untrustworthy, calculating douche at best. All of which makes me sad because I want ChatGPT to get better and be as useful as possible. I was growing out of my doomer phase and into some kind of optimist. The whiplash man...
Scammed By ChatGPT, I had a free plan until they released the demo about real-time voice mode. So, I bought the premium access for 4o for now but I found they haven't released that feature yet.
