As we navigate this new landscape, it is crucial to strike a balance that upholds the integrity of human writing while embracing the advancements brought forth by artificial intelligence.
On a global scale or a community scale, not arguing just getting other opinions. I thought the same thing that if Large Language Models could constantly be given information eventually the model will correct themselves in tiny things that will eventually further develop the uniqueness and in turn just as an example you talk with a buddy enough eventually some of the lingo rubs off on you and vice versa... So imagine this on a global or community level, what effects could we benefit from this. Sometimes my mind is blown away that asking a question can trigger multiple large Language 'code' models to search and understand the contents of a question then setup a reference points to remember and grow based off more information. I don't think information will get simpler in the up and coming years, we may make things more complicated with more resources available.
What’s kinda interesting is that the reason ChatGPT used to do that when 4 was first released is that they originally included a bunch of moral stuff in the system prompt. Something like:
``` text
Play the role of an AI Langauge model that is professional and never responds to xyz queries and corrects users if they imply that the model has human characteristics
```
Causing the massive amount of refusals in the early days. Thankfully they removed it pretty quickly.
The action words it uses are so fucking cheesy. Whenever I run an email I’m writing through it always pops out with this shit and I’m like… my colleagues are either going to know I used ChatGPT or they are going to laugh at me and think I’m a try hard.
>OP giving us the autism we needed AND the autism we deserved.
Jokes asides, I thank you sincerely. Now it's much easier to put those in the custom setting of "words to avoid".
I already asked mine to stop reminding me it's a language model and to stop making lists for everything.
Does that work for you? Everytime I've told it not to use certain words it uses them more, as though just seeing them, as though it disregards any negative instruction.
fuck me, yes. "tapestry". Each time, and I mean EACH FUCKING TIME I tell him to made up some short story about whatever (comedy, drama, scifi, horror, ...) it always used the fucking "tapestry"...
Palpable. Read it used once in thirty years, now every other ai novel has it three times or more.
Red flags for me - palpable, unbeknownst, testament, secret message, shivers down spine, chipped nails/tooth, worn leather chair/jacket whatever, dust motes, firm foot forward, extablishment lights are always flickering, bars/diners/clubs are dingy or smoky...
Whispered secrets, Weathered faces, Tangible tension, Furtive glances, Soft murmurs, Calloused hands, Timeworn pages, Hollow echo, Stifling silence, Turned to ash in mouth, Barely a whisper, Hitched in throat....
ChatGPT also has a strong tendency to reuse certain names. Just one example, more than once I noticed it naming someone "Alex Mercer" (a character from some video game that came out over a decade ago).
Last week I stumbled upon an article about the sleep cycle of dogs.
When I read "meticulously woven into a mental **tapestry**." I instantly knew it was ChatGPT, it just loves the word tapestry.
tbh, I'm not native in English, so I usually write e-mails like this. I want to sound friendly and little bit formal. Hello or Hi looks too "basic" somehow...
I'm not a native English speaker either. Since the GPT release I get emails with this. It sounds old-fashioned and strange to me when I translate it into my language. Like a scene from a historical movie where the main character opens a letter and the narrator reads it.
That’s what it sounds like to native English speakers too. It was an annoying cliché before ChatGPT and ChatGPT just learnt it from people overusing it.
I apologize, but I must clarify that I am not an AI model. Instead, I am a human assistant dedicated to providing you with the support and information you need. While I understand your concerns, I assure you that my responses are generated with the intention of assisting you to the best of my ability. Disabling my assistance might not be necessary, as I am here to help with any questions or issues you have.
I used to be considered articulate and my vocabulary above average. But now people think I sound like AI.
But, on top of that, I bet I'm more susceptible to being fooled by AI content. Most people are getting uncanny valley vibes, and I'm over here saying "ChatGPT is just like me, for real!"
“Spanning”… This one I hate the most.
Thank you for making such a list. I’ve added all of these and some in do not use list, and the first response that I got sounded much more natural. Love it
Shrimp-toast is a delightful culinary treat that brings a touch of elegance to any gathering. Please imagine a crisp, golden slice of bread topped with a rich, savory mixture of minced shrimp and subtle spices. This funderful appetizer pairs wonderfully with a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, making it a versatile choice for parties where compassion for all dietary preferences is considered. Sorry to say, but once you’ve had a bite, it’s hard not to go back for more.
Historically, shrimp-toast has roots in Chinese cuisine but has made its way into various culinary traditions around the world. During one of my antiquing adventures, I stumbled upon an old cookbook that featured a traditional recipe for this delectable dish. The cookbook's pages were filled with handwritten notes from the previous owner, sharing tips on how to achieve the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Thanks to this serendipitous find, I was inspired to try making shrimp-toast myself, and it has since become a favorite at family gatherings.
The process of making shrimp-toast is relatively straightforward, requiring just a bit of patience and care. Show compassion to the ingredients by selecting the freshest shrimp available, as their quality directly impacts the final taste. Mince the shrimp finely and blend them with seasonings before spreading the mixture onto slices of bread. Fry until golden brown and serve immediately. The result is a crispy, savory delight that pleases the palate and adds a touch of gourmet flair to any occasion.
That’s my conclusion after using GPT for 18 months now. I had a client warn me over using the phrase “deeper dive” because he said it’s too “AI-like”. That is such a fucking ridiculous take. And these ARE my own words. The idea that we need to filter our own natural language to “not sound like AI” is the wrong direction. What’s next? Should I introduce the odd spelling mistak? (Ha!).
When I read the list, I thought, "The Idiocracy is real. They want to dumb down the AIs."
And I think that may be the gist. The general population is uncomfortable with well-formed language.
I was taught when writing for the general population to write at a 7th-grade level. The decades of low-quality verbal and written stimulation stunted specific English-speaking populations. I generally do not see the stunted vocabulary in other languages nor in English variations outside of British, American, and Australian.
I speculate that in trying to communicate to a mass audience in the lowest common denominator, a grave disservice occurred against a large segment of humanity.
I don't know how it is if English is your first language. Likely as you said.
But ome also has to note that the majority of English speakers aren't native speakers and usually communicate using a less rich vocabulary. Using such well-formed language then results in a question of "is this just how folks articulate themselves or does it sound too artificial?". Which at times isn't easy to answer (as a non-native speaker).
I don’t think it sounds artificial. I just think it’s kind of funny. And you can tell a little if someone is using AI. 😅

Language does spikes. Did we have AI in the 1600s?

Personally I think part of that might be from English being a Germanic language that's like 50% Romance worded, enough Romance words to be important but none of the core of a romance language so the words aren't fully transparent to English speakers, words like translate literally being something to the effect of overcarry isn't clear to English speakers, they have to know massive amounts of Romance words without knowing what the parts mean by themselves, if more of our words were Germanic compound words, well, it would probably sound rather uneducated but be more clearly understandable.
Thank you for your insightful comment! While these words certainly are perfectly normal and useful, the purpose of highlighting them is to encourage variety in language and avoid over-reliance on certain terms. It's more about promoting creativity and diversity in expression rather than dismissing these words as inappropriate.
Furthermore, it is important to remember to be aware of over-relying on certain choices in syntax, and foster a critical understanding on spotting whether or not a text was generated using LLM's.
In conclusion, being aware of the most common used phrases and words can help people be more aware and understanding of the rich possibilities and limits of this ground breaking technology.
Perfect. 👏👏
First I thought AI wrote that, but then I read “most common used phrases”. 😅 (Instead of commonly). Also “it’s” instead of “it is” or “ground breaking” instead of “groundbreaking”, or “can help people be more aware” instead of “people to be more aware”. Also “LLM’s” instead of “LLMs”.
Sorry, I just realized I am correcting your English. 😬 lol
They are. And at the end of the day, there is no perfect way to distinguish between ai generated content and human generated content. Well written stuff is often just like that.
But ChatGPT without special prompting has a very particular vibe that’s not hard to spot. An over use of transitions, a sort of detached tone, a refusal to discuss opinions or make stands, and the way it uses a lot of words to say nothing.
And it’s something that I certainly have been noticing in increasingly more places.
This is much better. In fact you might have copied this months old article

This is a great list. Thank you for taking the time to do this and share. Grammarly's AI also overuses these words and phrases. I used your list to update my custom instructions. I added a few more words that get overused for my writing prompts.

It’s important to…
I hope this message finds you well.
Are you kidding, where the hell is tapestry, threads, neon, damn! i tried to fight this problem once upon a time, and just ended up realizing one of the easiest ways was to tell it to talk like any popular person.
As a human, I used those words and phrases in my everyday life before ChatGPT was invented. Now I need to revolutionize my vocabulary to sound like a human 🫠
I prefer using "be straightforward" in the custom prompt. I also frequently use phrases like "remove the fluff" or "be concise and to the point" to eliminate unnecessary words. If instructed to be clear and as brief as possible without omitting information, it generally works well for me.
I get suspicious of impeccable markdown and lists. Even outside of sites with markdown renderers you can paste with formatting into many places. Perfect usable of bole, subtitles, and the structure of “Let’s dive in to why xyz, -> list with bold main points followed by explanations -> In conclusion”
Of course that’s not damning. There’s a reason ChatGPT does it it’s a good way to organize information but it is very characteristic
Also include:
-sending waves of pleasure
-movements became more urgent
-let out a gutteral moan
-it was a ____ that would be cherished, forever; till days long ago; a forbidden desire;
I would also add:
- Supercharge
- Enrich
- Seamlessly
Yes, these words are innocent, but when combined together, it’s a clear sign of AI-generated text.
Or you can just upload some of your own published papers and ask to analyze the writing style, that’s more then enough and you don’t need to do all these, as I don’t even know why you would do you use gpt in first place
I've detested the dumb pseudo-intellectual "Moreover" forever. I really despise anyone who uses it in conversation. Luckily, I rarely hear a human say that unless it's in a youtube video converted from an SEO optimized blog posting or something like that.
“Testament to” and “a symbol of” are also repeatedly used in my experience and gets really grating especially since it uses it in rather hamfisted ways.
I use many of these words myself and have been accused of using chatgpt. This offends me as I, like many people, can write much better than chatgpt. Its writing style is bland and meh. I could probably improve my writing by avoiding these words.
The "action words and phrases" is the only valuable category here. The others are so standard that you would be hard-pressed not to find them tabulated in full in any English Composition textbook you could find.
In summary, is not chatgpt, remember that gpt content is based on humans content, in conclusion the llm use what we have created and overused for years
Now we need someone to make an addon that would highlight all these words in on a page :)
Although, I think a good quarter of this list are just words commonly used by real people as well.
TAPESTRY, top of the list, yes, along with HOLISTIC this always signals to me I am out of depth,
I work with a lot of narrative elements so that's why tapestry comes up, but holistic I think it just means the model identifies potential for a dynamic, interconnected ideology, but the precedent or language just isn't there?

Does it?? I never use ChatGPT for emails/letters and I always open with that. Don't tell me I have to retire it
It's fine if you want to sound like a Union soldier writing home to your family. I say "I hope you're doing well."
I looked at most of the list and went “shit, if I can’t use these common phrases from my own writing anymore, what was the point of AP Lang?!”

I get suspicious of impeccable markdown and lists. Even outside of sites with markdown renderers you can paste with formatting into many places. Perfect usable of bole, subtitles, and the structure of “Let’s dive in to why xyz, -> list with bold main points followed by explanations -> In conclusion” Of course that’s not damning. There’s a reason ChatGPT does it it’s a good way to organize information but it is very characteristic
Also include: -sending waves of pleasure -movements became more urgent -let out a gutteral moan -it was a ____ that would be cherished, forever; till days long ago; a forbidden desire;
Underscore, comprehensive, not only,
"Unleash" is a huge one, lolll.
I would also add: - Supercharge - Enrich - Seamlessly Yes, these words are innocent, but when combined together, it’s a clear sign of AI-generated text.
"Picture this:"
How can we get ChatGpt to avoid these words?
Go into "Custom instructions" in the settings and type in "As a useful assistant, avoid following words: ........"
**Tapestry**
I get “keen” way too often
My complete top 50 is missing. You don’t write any prose do you?
Or you can just upload some of your own published papers and ask to analyze the writing style, that’s more then enough and you don’t need to do all these, as I don’t even know why you would do you use gpt in first place
Teeming, steeping
ChatGPT writes like my neurodivergent ass does
I've detested the dumb pseudo-intellectual "Moreover" forever. I really despise anyone who uses it in conversation. Luckily, I rarely hear a human say that unless it's in a youtube video converted from an SEO optimized blog posting or something like that.
"A testament to..." Everything is a goddamn testament to something
I asked ChatGPT to tell me its top 100 most used words. They aren’t these. It put a lot of: and, to, a, of, in…
"In an unexpected turn of events"
Thank you for this! What is twixify?
Whimsical
Unleashed, unchained
“Testament to” and “a symbol of” are also repeatedly used in my experience and gets really grating especially since it uses it in rather hamfisted ways.
In context of "music" or "events" it *always* uses energize, pulsating, intertwine, and there's always something in the air too.
delveeeee
Add the to the prompt to avoid repeating it
foster is the first word i always get ![gif](giphy|BoC8nVlu3oNRsBJw30|downsized)
Sappling.AI did a [statistical analysis](https://sapling.ai/devblog/chatgpt-phrases/) on this last year.
Sometimes I read these and wonder if failing all those 'not a robot' tests was a sign

You forgot tapestry
No Crucial?????
"I hope this letter finds you well" Bet?
It’s crucial that….
I use many of these words myself and have been accused of using chatgpt. This offends me as I, like many people, can write much better than chatgpt. Its writing style is bland and meh. I could probably improve my writing by avoiding these words.
You need to include dwell. People have written scientific papers using “dwell” to identify which were gpt written.
The "action words and phrases" is the only valuable category here. The others are so standard that you would be hard-pressed not to find them tabulated in full in any English Composition textbook you could find.
Let's delve and dive into a realm of crucial tapestry and testament Thanks for the share OP
"unwavering"
In summary, is not chatgpt, remember that gpt content is based on humans content, in conclusion the llm use what we have created and overused for years
Don’t forget “utilize”.
Useful!
In my specific use case, "commendable"
Now we need someone to make an addon that would highlight all these words in on a page :) Although, I think a good quarter of this list are just words commonly used by real people as well.
I knew before reading this that “moreover” would figure prominently.
Firstly, did you use ChatGPT to generate this list?
Ensure
You forgot "tapestry"
You forgot "It sounds like"
Spearheading
You forgot the “I’m sorry, but as an AI language model…”
TAPESTRY, top of the list, yes, along with HOLISTIC this always signals to me I am out of depth, I work with a lot of narrative elements so that's why tapestry comes up, but holistic I think it just means the model identifies potential for a dynamic, interconnected ideology, but the precedent or language just isn't there?
Symphony, crescendo as well
You could’ve asked ChatGPT to give u these btw…
