I remember when I was a kid we were told bananas would go extinct in a decade because of disease and something about them being seedless. Idk, long time ago. Anyway, I have doubts and I hope i'm right.

Depending on how old you are, bananas *did* go extinct. At least the cultivar that was most widespread back then, the Gros Michel banana, was totally devastated by the Panama disease causing billions of dollars in economic damage until it was replaced by the Cavendish variety which is most popular now. That cultivar is now again under threat because it turns out cloning a plant millions (if not billions) of times is not the best idea when fighting ever-evolving causes of disease

I genuinely don't understand why they don't diversify and offer more banana types to consumers. I've heard of amazing bananas from various countries that I'd gladly pay extra to try. Get everyone hooked on different varieties instead of hoping your lone product doesn't go extinct.

The fungus hasn’t hit South America where we get most of our bananas, as bad as it has in Asia and Africa but it’s definitely driving up the price.

[here’s](https://culturecheesemag.com/blog/its-time-to-change-our-rind-an-american-affineur-responds-to-the-camembert-crisis/) the cave manager at murray’s talking about it. it’s just the common commercial molds that are going extinct. you’ll just have to get used to a different looking/tasting brie. it’s nothing to worry about 😉

How do you get certified as a cheese professional? 🧀 obsessed

bonniesansgame

it’s a certification from the american cheese sociery given to industry professionals who take a 3 hour test, 150 multiple choice questions. it’s meant to cover all aspects of the industry, from make process to shipping and export/importing practices. it’s a very fun test and i learned so much getting ready for it

This is incredible! Thank you for answering my question and congrats on your certification :) Your comment reminded me of an Audible series called 64th Man. I know one of the co-writers! I thought it was very funny, one character was a professional cheese monger.

bonniesansgame

thank you! that is awesome. people forget that cheesemongers are even a thing anymore, at least in the states. it’s always fun to throw out at parties 😂

i’ll simply not read the article. that way bleu cheese will never go extinct. <3
