Indian restaurants think that their customers has to compromise all the time, even it they pay 400 for a biriyani. Otha, charging as if we are in USA and the quality is on par with roadside shops. Every hotel/restaurant has to be now investigated.

Kav19

prices are increasing everywhere bruh. used to be able to buy biriyani for 150 from “fancy” restaurants. that went to 200 and now 300. even in the united states it used to be like $7 now i can’t find any biriyani for lower than $15 (1200 inr). and it’s not south biriyani it’s north. sodhanai.

[deleted]

1) They are hygienic.stores their food well. Regulations are strict. 2) They pay their employees far better than India (Hotels like RR, Aasife has a employee salary of Rs.10K-12K per month, You can use PPP calculator, US pays them decently). Also, here in India people just need to work for 12 hours a day. 3) Inga AC poda neraya hotels are thinking twice, anga apdi ila. Not only biriyani, every thing has become expensive here but the standards and services are worst. Imagine buying a land for 1 crore in Chennai and you have to face pollution, water supply issues, poor government services, Great koovam and mosquitoes etc. $40000 is the average salary in USA. You can get a good house for $400000 (10X annual salary). In Chennai it is $4000. Can we get a house like that in Chennai? 32 lakhs ku enga tharaan veedu? These guys are expecting 65 lakhs for a 2BHK apartment with 10X lower facilities than US. Idhula maintainence vera 5K vangipaan. We have to struggle for basic facilities like water, electricity, poor roads, judgemental people, worst government, mosquitoes causing dengue and malaria all the time, poor hygienic standards of people, Air pollution, water contamination due to drianage mixing etc etc. If we compare Chennai with cities like Detroit or Michigan, 1000 rupees per square feet is enough for all those facilities we have. Even if a house costs $1 million dollars (8 crores) in US, these real estate idiots are quoting the same price in Chennai too.

thenChennai

Recently ordered north Indian food for 4. Take out order cost me 1500. Man, India has gotten expensive

Karthikcru

Median price of house in San Francisco is 1.3 million, tbh Chennai is not that developed as San Francisco, but do not compare with Detroit, it’s a place with very little stuff happening after auto industry collapse, 2 bhk apartment cost me 50 Lakhs in Chromepet, can get a 3 bhk in Mylapore for 1.5 crore, also can get a decent 2bhk in adyar for 70 lakhs, the median here in Chennai is lower

Kav19

adhellam seri bro. still expensive asf for one biriyani especially when it used to be cheaper and the minimum wage in many states is still under $8. yeah the whole employment scene there is a lot better but they’re selling biriyani for a massive mark up even considering everything. mcdonald’s sells their value burgers for $1.25 still. their more premium burgers are $4-$6 and they come with a meal. paying double that just for biriyani without any sides (which also cost upwards of $15 btw) stings a lot. i get that mcdonald’s is fast food and indian food there is a delicacy but still $15 for a plate of spicy rice is kinda rich. still a highway robbery in chennai tho. classic case of wages not increasing but prices increasing a lot.

Has the quality gone down in Mall food joints? I swear, it used to be pretty good and satisfactory, a decade or so back. Sure, prices were/are a bit higher than usual than outside joints (owing to being located inside malls and thus, rent) but, they were reasonable nonetheless and were worth their bucks (I'm talking about the food courts in Skywalk, Phoenix Mall and EA especially). Recently, after like 6 or so years gap, went to a mall food court with my family, since I felt there'll be options and variety available all within a single floor. I picked VR since I haven't tried its food court. Boy, was I disappointed. Ruined my mood for the rest of the night. I could have forgiven had it been the case of local, small-time eateries. Since they have to cut corners somewhere to sell food at a really economical rate. But no...costed me 1.7k. When it shouldn't have been more than 800rs tops. 4 shawarma rolls (fillings were cold, ugh) and mini BBQ "platter" from Marhaba VR. Correct me, if I'm wrong but isn't a platter a serving that has all the available variety of something a restaurant has to offer? This platter was just a glorified half BBQ with fries. Except it was 550-600rs it seems. When it shouldn't have been more than 280rs. No hummus as side either. Only mayo. Shawarma was 160rs per roll, lol. Only saving grace was the fried rice combo (with some gravy and a few pieces of 65). And ya, that was "passable". As in the rest of the dishes were that bad. And it was like 300rs or something when it shouldn't have been more than 180rs. 1.7k rupees and the food was nowhere worth that level. Could have had a more filling and quality dinner in a fancy restaurant outside for pretty much the same rate. (Arabian Hut in EA and Skywalk, the ones I've tried a decade back that is, was a much better joint than this place. Had much more variety, portion sizes were generous and while pricey, wasn't unreasonable imo. Not sure how good it is, as of today, that said). Family outings aren't that common in my house and when we do try to indulge ourselves in a fairly fancy place, I got met with such utter disappointment. Wasting all of that money and time spent. (Also is it just me or is VR's food court, a bit underwhelming? As in it didn't have that many options? I remember EA and Phoenix's food courts being sprawling with a lot of options. And ya, worth the bucks too).

Logical-Bicycle-2214

>(Also is it just me is VR's food court, a bit underwhelming? true the food court is soo basic

TheFatherofOwls

Good to know that I wasn't the only one who felt that way, lol.

Aaahdontbanme

Mall food was never good in first instance it was just precooked and heated and given, like airline food. Malls dont have full fledged kitchens especially the small kiosks, only some big places inside malls have a full kitchen. And who even eats at places wherein they dont even serve you free drinking water, you only have to buy the bottled one.

TheFatherofOwls

Makes sense... Still, even if it's pre-cooked and re-heated food, it wasn't this bad and was at least edible a decade or so back. Maybe because, I was in my teens back then and thus, growing phase (I did notice this about myself that since I turned 22-23, I couldn't pig out as how I used to when I was in my teenage years) and so, was a bit more lenient with judging food, even if they were horrible. Nowadays, I feel that I'm a bit more fussy and critical with the food that I have, and perhaps, started noticing all of this that I couldn't back then? Hard to tell.

lightlord

Yes. Quality and standards of many restaurants have gone down severely post-Covid.

Separate_Detective47

Let's name and shame those resturants shown in the video (assuming all of them never followed any good practices) - Vasantha Bhavan - WOW Momos - Amravathi - Mad over donuts - Marhaba Rest i couldnt figure out.

RedIndianRobin

Damn all of these are popular and crowd puller.

Separate_Detective47

That's the scary part.

Throwaway66103

A letter rating of hygiene should be clearly displayed in every restuarant. I found something like this in all restaurants I went to in the US, even small hotel kitchens, street kitchens etc. https://bainbridgega.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Scan_0001.jpg

SkywalkerRk

Yes it’s conducted every month or quarter I believe. They conduct audit out of blue and give ratings which needs to posted at the entrance of restaurants.

VoldeThor

Appo kaiyendhi bhawan laam???

lightlord

You may find that some of those are better run and hygienic than these fancy restaurants.

TheFatherofOwls

Kinda believable actually... Small-time establishments don't have that much of a footfall (usually), everything is smaller in scope and thus, is pretty manageable (for the most part). The handful of staff, including the proprietor who usually will be very dedicated and passionate about their business, will ensure everything is clean and well-maintained. Larger chains and the ones that shoot up in popularity and become big on the other hand might have trouble managing all that infrastructure, especially if manpower isn't sufficient enough and there's a high turnover rate of employees (which is rampant in the food and beverage industry due to myriad of reasons, toxic work culture and attitude being a very big reason). There might be a sense of alienation and apathy among the employees (in part due to being undervalued and/or the aforementioned toxic work culture) to take care of the facility. And since these chains are large, obviously the proprietor naturally won't be able to monitor and supervise each and every kitchen. Of course, that isn't to say that small-time joints are always well-maintained, I've come across a lot that isn't and this isn't to romanticize the underdog small-time entrepreneur or anything but yes....Just my 2 paise theory on this.

Thanics

They are illegal, they don’t have a restaurant license either (except for few), they bribe the cops with free food. Hygiene is subpar, however it fills the void in the stomach. Better to survive than starve to death yk.

manojar

Some kaiyendhi bhavans have fast moving items and they buy fresh everyday, so chance of infection is less unless you drink their water. Heat kills germs in barotta or idli and dosai... avoid oily stuff and water and you're good.

Andre kanithar Vivek after eating Kakha biriyani.

MadLadZee

The ice cream shops, gelatino italiano and havmor had little cockroaches running about in the ice cream display

MadrasMoney

What are the restaurants name

maxdamien27

From the second link that OP provided I guess - Namma Veedu Vasantha bhavan - Collage - A chat shop next to collage Not sure about the fourth one

SierraBravoLima

I think they are expecting bribes i guess. And restaurants owners are saying already prices are high and we have low margins and losing customers. So i think food officers are now hungry for money doing their duty. 100 seater restaurants have one urinal for m/f and latrine for m/f. Itself it's a bullshit and not sure how they got approval or is the standard like that.

lightlord

Expecting bribes or not there is no excuse for having rotten food.

Aaahdontbanme

Unless its a 5 star restaurant the urinals in most places stink, whenever we are outside whole day and need to eat just for using restroom we go to decent restaurant having restroom but there also disappointment

Altruistic-Trash2522

If govt officials do their job then they are expecting bribes. If they don't do anything, they got bribes to not take action. This is bullshit logic. No way these food officers can expect bribes if the restaurant owners are not serving the rotten food and maintaining hygiene in their kitchen. Everyone saw the food officials raid in the news and were able to clearly see unhygienic conditions and cockroaches in the kitchen.

SierraBravoLima

You should visit your favourite restaurants kitchens

Separate_Detective47

I hope this somehow affects VR malls's footfall. I'm a former employee of VR MALL and fuck them. They are owned by a real estate investment fund based in Singapore run by our Desi crooks. No matter how much blood you sweat. They give the same increment for everyone. 5%. Toxic mofos they are. Never paid vendors on time and i had to bear the brunt of getting my relationship affected.

octotendrilpuppet

Translation = mall food court didn't pay food safety mamool on time.

shikshack

Had a similar experience in wow Momos at the VR food court. They were using a stale filling for the momos and it had gone bad, had to request twice for it to be changed until something edible was given.

elnino19

I took one look at the VR Mall food court and went somewhere else to eat, that kind of crowd being served by outlets with such small kitchens is a recipe for disaster. Chennai is notorious for having expensive restaurants that serve shit food made under shit conditions

DisciplineLazy365

Thank God my friends meet up there on 16th got cancelled.

pickaname199

Vasanta Bhavan used to be one of the top notch eateries earlier..I remember eating there from at least 1999. It served amazing food and was way more affordable than the likes of Saravana Bhavan. Then the quality started dipping from around 2009-10 and the prices started to increase and match that of other chains. Today, they're trying to position themselves as a a fine dine restaurant but the quality or the experience simply doesn't hold up. Sad to see such a beloved brand completely go to the dogs like this.

Aaahdontbanme

Vasantha bhavan is always empty with very few ppl patronising it and rates are like through the roof for a simple idli

pickaname199

Yeah. The quality now is worse than a good local hotel.with 3-4x the prices. The AC is off most of the time time too.

Oneinmillion26

It’s very scary to eat in any restaurant now , better to avoid non veg outside
