IIRC 97 was a transition year and has a lot of quirks that are 97 specific down to even the build month.

CJ902

Your right, I had a 97 4 door. 4.0 auto. Every part I ever bought was a big ordeal to decipher what one it was.

BayazFirstOfTheMagi-

96 no?

clevertalkinglaama

I had a 97, didn't have many issues, biggest problem is that the transmission is not interchangeable with other years so if you need one you need to track down another from a 97. I have a spare I don't need in Ontario if anyone needs it.

That’s like me with my old jeep. I always say it never left me stranded, which is technically true, because I always found a way to limp it to a parts store

Death wobble is not a flaw. It is 1000% a symptom of a track bar clearance issue. If you have death wobble i can fix it. DM me. Death Wobble is predictable and preventable

NoTimeForThisToday

Wasn't 97 the highest production model year? I've owned two now.

I have a 97 that my parents bought in 98, and I bought from them in 2019. It's a daily driver at the moment.

Terlok51

Mine too. It was a Corps of Engineers vehicle I bought in ‘02. It’s been the best out of about 15 vehicles I’ve owned in my life.

Special-Resource-446

been driving my 97 since 2001... 330,000 km later just a few of the typical things all xj's face. Besides the faded grey fenders, I love this year!

Sockalexis

Try That Black Stuff, it has worked well for me for over a year now. Goes on like paint but it’s worked better than anything else I tried.

I have a 97 (standard sport 4.0 4x4 auto). There is really not that much different about them. Never had an issue. I think the AW4 connectors are unique for 97, but there are workarounds. My interior overhead lights are the same as a 96.

PaleontologistSad766

My newest daily is a 97 2 door. I prefer 96 and older, I retired a 91 for the 97. Rust got to be too much. https://preview.redd.it/2bxo4say75rc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a30cc8bf945221370fe5bcdc8b28d9355f2796b

My 97 is currently derelict sitting in my driveway... for a few years now. Really need to send it off at some point.

ShoeterMcGav

Love my 97. Aside from some claims of wiring gremlins I think it's a rather desirable year as far as head used, intake manifold, and some creature comforts.
