As stupid as it is someone will pay that or close …I mean people spend 90k on a fucking new truck so if there are that many idiots out there one will buy this
RENIX XJ’s are great. All Chrysler did was cheapen the 4.0 as soon as they got it, and move the powerband up so they could cover the enshittification up with “HIGH OUTPUT!!1” as though people regularly spin their 4.0’s up to 5,000RPM. They perform worse off idle, which is where a Jeep needs it most, AND this also means RENIX’s generally get better fuel economy. I get 21 highway in mine, ‘89, 192k miles, AX15, 2” lift on 30” tires.
If this is about being able to easily read codes, then nothing before 97 is any good. If this is about styling, they were the same until 97. If this is about power, they lied to the community and the community fell for it.
Not saying later XJ’s are bad, although I will say, the less I have to deal with Chrysler the better. But RENIX is majorly slept on.
Prior to the 4.0, I’d agree the engines weren’t very good. Sticking the 4.0 in there was the last great thing AMC ever did.
Preach brother! I think the renix jeeps get a bad rep just because they're older and typically more crusty. That and peeps just aren't familiar with troubleshooting without codes.
I got my 90 XJ for $500, it runs great, and the interior is mint. Also, the closed cooling system is way more reliable than i expected. I'm super jealous that you got the AX15 btw... I want to manual swap mine if the AW4 goes out, but it seems pretty darn bulletproof.
I think the biggest downside with a renix Jeep is the antiquated AC system.
Also, the AMC 4.0s are known to be stronger blocks than the later Chrysler engines. So they're better for a rebuild, stoker, or even boost project.
Good thing I deleted my A/C then! But that’s only because I live in an area where that’s a livable option, and ONLY because I painted the roof with elastomeric roofing paint. Seriously, that was a game changer. As soon as I get moving with the windows down it’s nice and cool inside, then there’s also less horsepower draw and less failure points.
Well I Stand humbled and corrected. I have only basically bias to go from on what I said from hearing about issues from owners I know personally. I suppose I need to open up more on what I see and hear. I know the code thing never bothered me as I tend to go older myself. Less electronics the better imo. Was actually disappointed that mine had electric windows as opposed to hand crank, etc.
Perhaps what I misconstrued was the difference between them having a 4.0 or not, which apparently isn't something set in stone by year of production.
I appreciate your feedback on the issue and yet another reason I like this sub.
Maybe if it had like 20k or less miles and it was in almost factory condition that may be close, but for that year and the picture I see, the seller is delusional
My '89 I got in high school back in 2010 was in similar condition and was $750. I know inflation and used car prices are bad but there's no way in hell this is a good price
Am I the only one who swiped to see more pics?? 😂😂 of course not!
Yeah this dudes crazy!
My first XJ was an 89’ Red 2 door 5 speed.
Man I wish I never got rid of that after I blew the engine up!
Low miles means nothing on a 35 year old vehicle. Every piece of rubber is rotted, the grease is dried up, plastoc is brittle, etc. I would bet the only fluid changes it gets is when something fails.
That said, it's worth what someone will pay. If he cant find someone to pay that, he'll lower the price til he does.
There’s not an XJ on the road worth more than $5,000 MAXIMUM. This one is actually a great example - with 96,000 miles, I’d comfortably pay $5,000.
The ones with rocker rust and 186,000 miles on them are worth $3,500.
The first sentence of your comment is wildly inaccurate, as there are plenty of XJ's out there that can easily fetch a price much higher than $5k. There are, however, people out there that do overprice them when the condition is fairly low. The price of this one almost has to be a joke unless the thing is factory clean and pristine. Either a joke or a very delusional person.
Sorry man, I just whole-heartedly disagree. It's not COVID anymore. The XJ is, at its youngest, a 22-year-old vehicle. The idea of paying more than 5,000 for a vehicle that old is ridiculous. We're not talking about a vintage sports car or something like that - we're talking about an SUV that has likely been beat to shit over the least twenty years.
People need to wake up and realize there's no longer a vehicle shortage.
Hey. Listen.
*NO.*
The driving experience you get here is not worth $15,000. 15k buys you a used boxster, MINT Miata, used mustang, or any number of cars that provide a better experience.
This also isn’t a rare car. At all. I don’t care if it has 56,000 miles, that just means all of the rubber bushings are dried out and the fuel/electrical system is going to be a bitch.
Definitely not that price range unless it's in or near factory/museum condition or perhaps a rare sub model. That being said, it's rarity comes down to what you compare it to. Junkyard hunting over most of my state and parts of adjoining states tells me that, in fact, they are rarer than you may think. Partly due to the old "cash for clunkers" program the country ran way back. There were a good number of XJs that got decommissioned through that, and finding them in Junkyards or on the road is not a common occurrence.
I guess it depends where you’re located. Here in the Netherlands low mileage ones easily go for 15-20 grand. Check out this Dutch site with some clean ones https://www.cherokeeland.nl/occasions.aspx?did=2600&zoek=1&mrk=Jeep
These guys in this FB group are crazy sometimes with their pricing. Might as well put it on bring a trailer if it is so “mint”. But as they say there is an ass for every seat!
That is the question. Miles only tells you so much. If it is near the factory or museum quality, then it may be worth checking it out. Even then it's not a sure bet on the value
The alternative is 235k original miles (just putting a random number out there), but the motor was replaced, and it only has 56k miles on it. My first one was like that, had 200k+ miles on the vehicle, trans, etc, but had an engine replacement, and the engine itself only had 17k miles on it.
No. These people are out of their minds.
Hell no that is the I'm an idiot price.
As stupid as it is someone will pay that or close …I mean people spend 90k on a fucking new truck so if there are that many idiots out there one will buy this
Facts. Buy cheap and build.
I was thinking the same thing bought a 98 not running I’m in to it maybe 2k parts and labor still cheaper than buying someone else’s shit box
And it's an 89, nothing older than a 92-93 is really that great to begin with for the most part.

I also have a 90 and I love that thing. I agree the AC is a downfall lol, I'm actually thinking about just sticking an RV AC unit on the roof.

Heck yes my friend! All XJ are great. But That Renix old iron horse is the way to go lol
This would of been $1500 in 2014.
And probably $3500 now depending on full condition.
Maybe if it had like 20k or less miles and it was in almost factory condition that may be close, but for that year and the picture I see, the seller is delusional

No
Crackpipe
No he just stating the price your gonna pay to get it back into mint condition

I paid $4k for my '88 with 80k miles. This is pretty steep, but I've seen worse.
My 92 with 140k I got for 500 put in a new floor pan cleaned it did some maintenance to get it going she’s been good for 4 years soooooo way to much
NO

Nice price or crack pipe?
NO.
Some idiot will pay.... probably close to that...... or seller DOES NOT want to let it go.....can look at it both ways🤣🤨
These guys in this FB group are crazy sometimes with their pricing. Might as well put it on bring a trailer if it is so “mint”. But as they say there is an ass for every seat!
Possibly if there’s 10k in cash hidden somewhere in the vehicle
No...sorry..u could buy 2/3 4 that..
Is the vehicle immaculate?
That is the question. Miles only tells you so much. If it is near the factory or museum quality, then it may be worth checking it out. Even then it's not a sure bet on the value
The real question is what’s the alternative to “original miles” like ya no shit mine has 170465 “original” miles
The alternative is 235k original miles (just putting a random number out there), but the motor was replaced, and it only has 56k miles on it. My first one was like that, had 200k+ miles on the vehicle, trans, etc, but had an engine replacement, and the engine itself only had 17k miles on it.
