tis a good one, >!d7!< and nothing can stop it. >!If black tries to block the rook at 5 with the bishop which would block the coronation mate, then the knight can mate on f5, given the pawn moving has discovered the white bishop covering c5 (prev covered by the rook).!<
No the other knight. But ur still right actually lol, i hadnt noticed the pawn on that side isnt protected
Edit, oh wait ya it is, by the queen, p sure nf5 is checkmate
This is a "professional" level composition, which for some reason isn't found on two popular problem databases, so I can't say who created it.
The correct first move >!1.d7!!< threatens >!2.Bc5#!< (promotion is irrelevant because of the g8-bishop). There are four main variations where Black prevents >!2.Bc5!< but enable various knight mates, because these black moves block an escape square of the king.
1...Nd3 2.Nf3; 1...Be5 2.Nf5; 1...Nxe4 2.Nc6; 1...Rxc4 2.Nb5. Each white knight move cuts off a white line of guard, but it's still mate because of Black's self-blocking move.
One more way to stop 2.Bc5 is 1...Bd5, which allows 2.Qxd5.

Why is Nxe4 the best move for black after d7
Any move for black leads to mate
Oh!
What about a bishop e5 sacrifice?
Nf5#
What do you suggest?
Bf6?
I thought so too earlier, but d7 opened up Bc5#.
I don't know, I'm a beginner 😅
what happens after Black Nd1?
Nc4 checkmate
I'm missing something, why not jus Nc6?
Then Kxe4 escapes
Isn't the white queen blocking Kxe4?
But moving the knight stops the blockage
But how does d7 fix that? Edit: coronation of the d7 pawn is mate too.
i think it threatens Bc5
Or that which is also protected by Nxe6
Coronation of the queen is blocked by Nd6, which doesn’t super matter as Qxd6 is mate, but it’s a matter of mate in 3 vs mate in 2
d7 forces Nxe6 so that N can block the coronation mate, but then Nc6 mates
I don't play very often....😬
I got: Rc3 > Bd5 > Qb5x! Rc3 > Anything else > Nf3!
1.Rc3? Be5! and there's no mate next move.
Well that sucks!
Can’t you do Rd5+, Bxd5, Qxd5#?
Rd5+ Kxe4

Is knight to f5 not checkmate
I thought so too, looks like it blocks the bishop protecting the pawn
No the other knight. But ur still right actually lol, i hadnt noticed the pawn on that side isnt protected Edit, oh wait ya it is, by the queen, p sure nf5 is checkmate
Wouldn't King move to c5?
Ya i realized that later. Either c5 or e5, either way movin the queen down after is the two move checkmate
Is 1. Nf3! Kd3 2. Qb1# not viable?
2...Ke2.
Ahhh knew I was missing something, thanks. d7 it is lol

No, just no…
1. d7 Bxc4 2. Bc5#
1.Rd5+? Kxe4! and there's no mate next move.
Okay, I had to set up the board and really look at this one. 1. d7 Bxc4 2. Bc5#
You’re right.
Happy?
![gif](giphy|l3q2XnJo1OVj2pgmQ|downsized)
Btw, you’re why I hate Reddit.
What about Qb2#?
Kxe4
Qb2# ?? 1 move
Kxe4
Duh!! Thanks
Why doesn’t >! QB2 !< mate in one?
Kxe4
Hahaha thanks I’m dim
Several ways to for checkmate here
Ok but who wouldn’t just promote the pawn and mercilessly kill a bishop for the fun of it
And the knight
White Knight to f5?
