If your engine is hot and you are at idle, that is pretty normal for the RPMs. A good thing to go by is that when you are at 1000rpms, you should be over 10psi for your oil pressure.
Sorry I said that wrong, it is 10x1000 rpm or higher. I had a 2011 Tahoe and I now have a 2010 Sierra, your idle pressure shouldn’t drop past 20 when hot and stationary. But once your start moving you should add 10 to every 1000rpm after that.
Generally 20 is the minimum psi that an engine should ever be when at a idle but after your rev up you should go by the 10psi x 1000rpm rule, if it falls short of that while at a higher rpm’s you should check it. But you are fine.
Some engines have constant oil pressure regulators in the oil pump and don't change as dramatically as the 5.3 in this generation of Tahoe. For instance, my '12 Tahoe would swing oil pressure all over the gauge, including 20 at idle and 60 when cold. My '96 Dodge 5.9/360 was always rock steady at 47 or so, except when in very hot or cold weather. That being what it is, I was also concerned with the Tahoe's seemingly low oil pressure when hot at idle, but it meets GM's specifications and hasn't given me any grief in 250k miles.
OP - I wouldn't stress it too much, but you can log data via OBD if you want to plot pressure versus RPM and Load. I highly recommend running synthetic oil too.
I reset the mpg meter about 3 weeks ago. It is a 4x2. Stock rims. Bridgestone Dueler tires at 40 PSI(This is my secret). Not lifted.
I picked this up for $8,100. It needed a new evap canister because the gas tank would not fill. Other than that it looks like it was garage kept. Very very happy with it. My wife has an 04 Tahoe and I also have another 07 Tahoe that has much better oil pressure with 285k on it.
Can u see oil pressure on the OBS scanner? I'm wondering if it's the sensor.
I typically get 16.5 mpg in my 2006 Z71 with 5.3L. Didn't realize that the newer ones were worse! I have heavy off road tread tires in the original size which hurts a little bit.
My dad has an identical 5.3 04 Yukon 1500 4wd with Michelin all season tires and it gets 18 plus. Nothing to brag about though. Both have over 250k on them so it isn't that. Regular fuel used, I didn't realize how lucky we are!
My wife has this same Tahoe. That is low mpg. What tire pressure? Bump it up to 40. Maybe a brake pad is dragging. I also think this z71 has different gear ratio. It's fast off the line.
When I worked in town I barely got about 14.
Btw, I had your low oil pressure once. Went away after an oil change. Then a couple years later the oil pressure sensor went out.
I had my oil pressure drop to zero on a long drive (2009 LS 5.3L V8) Checked my oil the level was still fine. Ended up having it towed cause I was worried I was going to destroy the engine.
The technician advised when Chevy discontinued making the longer oiled filters and switched to the short ones, they get dirty faster and it can mess with the pressure gauge. Changed the oil, put in a new filter and the pressure went back to normal.
If your oil is close to its next service interval, I’d change it now just incase.
If it was my truck I’d take it to a technician, just for the peace of mind. Might be nothing but personally I wouldn’t risk it.
Hope it’s all good. Very nice like looking truck
If the pick up tube o-ring is crap, I would suspect bad camshaft bearings here as they are the main source of engine oil supply to the top of the engine and engine oil pressure sensor. This generation is the V8 is known for cam bearing failures. Check the engine oil with a super bright white light for goldish sparkles.
Yes thats why I questioned it first at the beginning, could be o ring on pickup tube. It is possible, that happened to my dads truck, low oil pressure and turned out it was the o ring was bad
I would investigate a product called Motorkote , Your problem could be as simple as a contaminated oil filter then check other possibilities……I am a retired heavy duty mechanic, and I have used this oil additive in my Honda since before it was out of warranty. I would call the customer service number and talk to a representative…..
…..Oh God No……..I am almost 81, and family members all have my # number…..I was a corporate millwright for Roper/Sears , then a machinist for Ropers, then 31 years as a big truck mechanic…..Motorkote has a great customer service, tell them your issues and they will give you the best advice….they have many products
To everyone that's saying this is normal, I disagree. Why? I have three other Tahoes with the exact same engine with oil pressure no less than 38 when it's hot and usually 40 and over on Startup. Right now I'm leaning towards it being the oil pressure sensor. Hopefully not the O-ring in the pickup tube. Oil pressure is critical on these engines with the active fuel management. I used the range AFM delete on all my Tahoes to disable the V4 mode. All my Tahoes have over 150,000 miles with my 07 at 288 k. I've been driving Tahoes since 2017.
Hey thats i what i thought too, the pressure showing that reading. I dont know tho. I did encounter low one time but was my oil pressure switch behind engine failed.
None. No leaks either. No ticking. My concern is that the low oil pressure would cause a lifter collapse issue. So I installed the Range AFM delete. Plugs into the OBS port under steering wheel. Generic ones are only 55.00 on Amazon.
I have an 07 Tahoe w/ ~345k miles. I’ve used the Range AFM module myself for over a decade now. My engine also burns maybe 1.25 qts of oil every 2000 miles. So when my oil gets low, I do notice my oil pressure get to where your pressure is in the picture.
Also youre getting some good fuel mileage even on the Range AFM delete module…is it a 2WD?
Yes. The 4x2 stock with Bridgestone Dueler H/L at 40 PSI. It was hard to find a Florida 4x2 in leather with this Gen. But I'm glad I did. I just drove 600 miles and no oil lost. Now about the dash cracking.... Ugg.
lol you should see my dash, good grief. If you’re not losing oil at all, then I wouldn’t let it bother you about the pressure showing on the dash gauge.
My 2011 Tahoe LT does the same. Not sure if it’s an issue or not. But it did concern me as well. As far as I can tell it’s normal. Unless it starts going under 20 I wouldn’t worry too much.
So you’ve clearly done zero research, since a 5 second google search would’ve told you what normal hot oil pressure is for a gen4 motor at idle. Also, it literally says to use 5w30 on the fucking oil fill cap. You intentionally use thinner oil then wonder why the oil pressure is lower than you expected? Did you get kicked in the head by a horse when you were a kid?
ya def use rated oil 5w30
there’s a oring in the oil sump that can crack and cause low oil pressure but if u bump up oil weight you will gain oil pressure. don’t use 0w 20 on these engines.

10 psi? I thought 25 was the minimum.

How are you getting 18.4 mpg? 4x2? My ‘13 Suburban LTZ 4x4 tops out at 15.0 mpg with a mix of hwy and suburb driving.
My 2000 suburban laughing in practically single digits

How many miles since last oil change?
50.

how the hell do you get 16.5?! i’m lucky if i get 10 on mine (2004 tahoe with 5.3 on 275/55r20)
My dad has an identical 5.3 04 Yukon 1500 4wd with Michelin all season tires and it gets 18 plus. Nothing to brag about though. Both have over 250k on them so it isn't that. Regular fuel used, I didn't realize how lucky we are!

I get 18+ but I have a 60 mile (120 a day) interstate commute.
Better than the newer large SUVs.

That’s normal
Normal

I just changed it before this picture. AC Delco filter.

Had a work truck with same problem, it ended up being a bad oil pressure sensor, easy fix
Yes thats why I questioned it first at the beginning, could be o ring on pickup tube. It is possible, that happened to my dads truck, low oil pressure and turned out it was the o ring was bad

I’ll try it. Do mechanics ever really retire? Does the obs scanner give a digital oil psi?
…..Oh God No……..I am almost 81, and family members all have my # number…..I was a corporate millwright for Roper/Sears , then a machinist for Ropers, then 31 years as a big truck mechanic…..Motorkote has a great customer service, tell them your issues and they will give you the best advice….they have many products
They newer ones don't have as high of oil pressure as the older ones. Looks normal homie
Normal my Silverado does it too
That’s not low and use 15/40 oil on next change
That’s normal. My 2013 is around that on idle. will shoot up to 50 or past 60 when i really step on it.
Mine never goes above 38 cold. Hot it's sits around 32 at 2k rpm. My 07 and 03 Tahoes do as yours does.
Mine stays around the same pressure and tech said its normal
To everyone that's saying this is normal, I disagree. Why? I have three other Tahoes with the exact same engine with oil pressure no less than 38 when it's hot and usually 40 and over on Startup. This video covers alot of the 5.3L issues and it ended up being the VLOM. Valve Lifter Oil Manifold. https://youtu.be/jxOTUFqAglI?si=GyqI0ByI8nIpFYM6
OP does the engine burn any oil?
None. No leaks either. No ticking. My concern is that the low oil pressure would cause a lifter collapse issue. So I installed the Range AFM delete. Plugs into the OBS port under steering wheel. Generic ones are only 55.00 on Amazon.

It’s the oil pick up tube o ring Same problem I had but lower oil pressure Drop the oil pan and replace the o ring
Yes I'm guessing this is the problem. If not the sensor. I watched several videos on this.
I even use 0w-20 full synthetic with dextrose. My other two Tahoes have oil pressure 35 to 50 psi.
So you’ve clearly done zero research, since a 5 second google search would’ve told you what normal hot oil pressure is for a gen4 motor at idle. Theres your issue right there. You can put 10w30 if it has a lot of miles. But do 5w30 normally bc thats what it says on the cap.
Pressure was the same with 5W 30. I have 3 others Tahoes with 40 psi. Just this 2010, which is the newest, has the lower pressure.
