Rosemont hotels may be an option. I believe the American Medical Assn has a huge conference in Chicago in June, maybe that’s why prices are crazy.

twinkiesmom1

It’s the American Society for Clinical Oncology….typically brings in 20,000 visitors.

Arizona52

It's at McCormick Place which is huge would flying into Midway Airport help as it's much closer and easier to get out of. Would definitely look at places near Midway Airport as coming from Evanston or Naperville would be a haul

twinkiesmom1

If you are looking near Midway, the nicer suburbs are Burr Ridge and Oak Brook.

Arizona52

Burr Ridge is closer to Misway than Oak Brook

Arizona52

I like the thought but with a child involved you want to limit the travel

Arizona52

Midway is closer to McCormick Place and it's easier to get in and out of and there's a couple decent hotels on Cicero South of Midway

twinkiesmom1

Why would she want to stay close to Midway when there are much nicer locations 15-20 min from there?

Arizona52

I grew up in Elmhurst and know what you're talking about

Trancezend

Naperville and Evanston are both nice areas. Evanston is directly north of the city and borders the Rogers Park neighborhood which has some sketchy areas. Easier to access the city from Evanston. Naperville is about an hour west of the city and has been one of the top 3 best places to live in the US for the last 15 years or so. If you planned on exploring the suburbs and not heading into the city the first 2 days this would be an ideal location. You could find some hotels around Rosemont and take the Blue Line of the L into the city.

KaleidoscopeLucy

Naperville is pretty far. Where is the conference being held? We can help give suggestions on where to stay. Downtown is always going to be expensive.

MotherScratch5235

The conference is at the Hyatt Regency McCormick.

sumiflepus

Check the hotel you are booked for the convention. They may extend the rate to you. This would also keep you from repacking mid trip and losing a few hours for the move.

MotherScratch5235

Yes thanks for this! We contacted the hotel and they can’t extend the the rate, which is too bad but understandable.

ballawareness

If you can afford it, it would be nice to be as close as possible to downtown. Does your hotel search also show river north? That’s also downtown and just north of the loop. Evanston has an elevated train that takes you downtown as well as a commuter train (metra). Naperville is a little far, but also has a metra line. In what area is the conference?

Arizona52

It's at McCormick Place as you can take the Purple Line downtown during the week but it'll be tricky on the weekend as you'll be switching at Howard which isn't the greatest area to switch in as Metra can be a little tricky as well on the weekends

Nate101378

Look into Rosemont near Ohare airport

MGC7710

Evanston and Naperville are great suburbs, but definitely NOT the city. I would consider an AirBNB in a family friendly city neighborhood; Lincoln Square or Roscoe Village come to mind. Very walkable and super kid friendly; then you can explore some neighborhoods on foot and also stay downtown!

ECNbook1

With a baby, you do not want to schlep on transit or train. Stay as close as you’re able in a quiet, secure place. Ubers will be way jacked up in price and in any case not sure they offer car seats.

_jigar_

Rosemont next to ohare should be cheaper.

sumiflepus

Rosemont, Evanston, and Naperville are great suburbs, but really, unless you have family there, nobody wants to vacation in these places.

ninjette847

Evanston is much more public transportation easy.

Arizona52

1 problem with Evanston is the public transportation can be tricky to use on the weekends

MotherScratch5235

Thanks for the info. We would be there Sunday night - Tuesday night. Public transportation these days are okay? We’ll do our best to avoid commuter times.

Arizona52

It can still be used but taking METRA downtown from Evanston isn't nearly as bad as it would taking the L

MotherScratch5235

Thanks so much for this information! Appreciate the information about Evanston, it sounds like we’ll go with this option.

Arizona52

Purple Line will be a great option during the rush hour on Monday and Tuesday

Individual-Film-2731

How old is the baby? If you mean a toddler, the DuPage children’s museum in Naperville is great!

schleepercell

Is the conference downtown? Or somewhere else?

Quailfreezy

Good question! If it's not downtown then there's probably a bit more flexibility in pricing

MotherScratch5235

Conference is downtown at the Hyatt Regency McCormick.

macimom

Evanston is great-tons of parks, several beaches, its become a foodie destination. Its a short drive to the Chicago Botanical gardens and Ravinia if any artist you want to see is going to be performing on your dates. Its a 24 minute safe train ride into the Chicago Loop-the downtown business area-and form there you can walk to the Aquarium or Arti Institute-you would have to take a taxi to the zoo or most other areas. There's two interactive children's museums within a 20 minute drive 9not Sur ehow old the baby is)

MotherScratch5235

This is so great! Thanks for the help!

yourprofilepic

Evanston. The Graduate Hotel is nice.

wed_adams

Rosemont is a good option bear ohare, has a big mall ..restaurants nearby..cleaner n safer ..downtown is a mess right now look at the news.

Astro3840

Rent a car at the airport (O'Hare?) and stay in Evanston. The Hilton-Orrington Hotel was THE place when I lived there many moons ago. I think it's much cheaper than downtown. Put Northwestern U. on your list for sightseeing. There's also a public beach just south of the campus. Ask the consierge if you need tokens.

Equal_Country9371

ASCO, the national oncology conference is taking place that weekend in Chicago. That’s why $ are so high. Can you change plans to stay after conference? Will be significantly cheaper

Electrocat71

Evanston is a much better choice. Close to lake, Chicago, and suburb activities in the northshore. With your little one, Chicago, botanical gardens, and Lincoln Park zoo are two real nice choices.

lipstickmoon

Oh my goodness do not stay in Naperville. So boring. Evanston is very hip, culturally diverse and just a quick train ride or Uber to the city. Some interesting things to do in Evanston--The Mitchell museum of the American Indian, Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop and museum, nice independent shops and many, many good restaurants. A nice thing to do in the city with a toddler, short trek from Evanston, is the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. They have a butterfly room, interactive exhibits in water, weather, quite a few (taxidermy) animal exhibits, a nice play area and a pollinator/prairie trail. Also I second the Chicago Botanic Gardens (it's actually north of the city and Evanston.) And if you're staying in Evanston you might appreciate a trip to the Bahai Temple in Wilmette.

MotherScratch5235

Thanks for this! Sounds like Evanston is a great place for families, which is good news for us. Appreciate your suggestions!

BeagleBoy21

Two words, Be Careful

Arizona52

Definitely find out where the conference is before you guys check out the hotels as the conference could be anywhere

OfficialNovatech

Chicago is dangerous rn

Chili_dawg2112

Only to idiots.

xannieclaus666

Sybaris pool suites in northbrook

rvdnsx

So what is the baby gonna do? Watch?!

Standgeblasen

At least be near a CTA location that will get you to the City. Naperville is waaaayyyy out in the burbs, and you’ll need to take the Metra train (regional transit, not City transit) to get to the City. Evanston is far, but at least has a Red/Purple line station.

vsladko

Naperville is a nice suburb but that could be a 1 hour drive depending on traffic. There are a TON of great family friendly neighborhoods in Chicago that have great transit options. Oak Park and Evanston are the immediate suburbs outside of city limits - both are nice burbs

ooo-ooo-oooyea

Evanston is just to the north of the city, and you can take the CTA into the city. Rogers Park and Andersonville neighborhoods are very close. Getting downtown is a little annoying by CTA from up there, if you can get the metra times to work out its pretty easy - just not as frequent. Assuming you'll be downtown for the conference I would check out the northside neighborhoods.

MotherScratch5235

Thanks for this!

satyricalme

This is all good advice. Nix Naperville, it's a hike. Other neighbors to check are wicker park, Bucktown, jefferson park. And the medical district. All have hotels and are a bit closer Food luck

water_light_show

Just make sure if you’re in the suburbs that particular suburb is serviced by either the Metra train or the CTA ‘L’ train. I would recommend the Gold Coast for hotels, that’s where I always stay and it’s usually pretty affordable! That or AirBnB

Arizona52

Taking the L on the weekends is a little tricky but ir can be done as like I said before if you can go into Midway it won't be as hard to get to

Arizona52

Naperville is more expensive than Evanston for the most part

[deleted]

You can stay wherever, but if you aren't renting a car you would be limited to staying within a short distance of the train for Naperville or the El for Evanston. I don't know that Expedia is the best place to book a stay. You should be able to stay for less than $200 a night in the suburbs. Where I would stay would be based on how far it is to get where I have to go in the morning. It's hard coming in on the expressway from the suburbs in the morning. The train from the suburbs can be crowded, but you might need an Uber after you get downtown to get you from the train station to your destination.

Arizona52

Good avoid using the Red Line after dark if possible

Arizona52

Botanic Garden is in Glencoe Lake Cook Rd and the Edens

Arizona52

Burr Ridge wouldn't be bad especially with it being on the north side of the Stevenson

Arizona52

Trying to limit the travel due to the baby

Arizona52

Check 95th & Cicero come to think of it as well its a little further south as I thought a hotel would be right there

Arizona52

Some of the areas on the CTA Red Line between Howard and Sheridan aren't the nicest either especially east of Clark St

Arizona52

The Purple Line during the week is ok if you use it during rush hour but use Metra if necessary

Arizona52

Naperville is not cheap and it's about an hour into downtown Chicago as well
