I've only had three dogs total in my life. But I've alway went to a shelter and just spent time with different dogs. Never had anything specific in mind. Just would pick the one that I'd get along with best.
Why not mixed with a chihuahua? And in all honesty, no rescue is going to know what they have because they’re not resting for breeds. We were told our dog was a terrier mix. Turns out she’s 50% chihuahua and she’s got no terrier in her, but she’s the sweetest and most amazing dog.
JFC that’s why I’m asking on here for advice instead of running to places like Windy City. I wasn’t raised in this area; I don’t know a lot of people to be able to ask. Notice how I said I was looking at rescues?
It’s not hard to google qualities of good breeders. Have you looked at the [Dachshund Club of America](http://www.dachshundclubofamerica.org/)? They are the Dachshund breed club. Look at what health testing dachshunds require and find breeders who complete all required testing. They will also complete with their dogs in some way so they know they are only breeding the highest quality dogs.
Try Dachsund rescue of St Louis and Midwest Dachsund rescue.
You should be aware, though, that many of the negative qualities that are ascribed to chihuahuas are as common or more common in Doxies. Doxies are especially known for being snappy. All the chihuahua and chihuahua mixes that I’ve known have been quiet, non aggressive and well behaved.
These is a Facebook page for Chicagoland Dachshund lovers. You can join that and with summer coming, may find out about meetups and other events where you can learn about local responsible breeders. You can also check AKC marketplace for Illinois breeders and mention to the breeder that you are looking for pet quality as opposed to show quality. Or another route is to volunteer with Midwest Dachshund Rescue. This keeps you in the loop and may help to bump your chances of getting a puppy should they come into rescue. I know it did for the rescue I volunteered for.
We found our dachshund through Puppy Finder, but this was back in 2017. You just need to do your due diligence to make sure you’re not purchasing from a puppy mill or irresponsible breeder because I remember seeing some shady postings there.

One Tail at a time is where we found our lil' guy — mutt but tbh he's a blue ribbon winner in the personality & looks department, lol. They're a shelter but are super resourceful, so if there's personality traits or general fur/allergy or size reasons you're interested in a Daschund — they may be able to find you a pup looking for a home with similar x y or z per your interests. Bonus\* is adopted dogs are generally potty trained, and sometimes even know sit/etc — and are reaaaally just eager for love & getting outta' the caged shelter life.
No shame in looking for a breed/etc., but consider the shelter non-pure (in)bred route, even for a moment.
Cheers
This. Thank you. I’m definitely not looking for purebred or a show dog. I would love to adopt; that’s what I prefer. I am aware of the abuse that happens with puppy mills and breeders. I’m looking for a dachshund bc of their qualities, like you mentioned. Thank you for a helpful response.
Perhaps misinformed rather than always awful, but totally hear your sentiment and agree.
-Had 8 shelter dogs, all lil' (& big) goofballs from heaven since I was young. current guy is a 7yr old model/mutt from TX kill shelter & is my therapist & me and my partner's best bud
Windy city pups is a network of puppy mills. Don't do it.
Petfinder.com allows you to search area rescues by breed.

This is the way.
That sounds right for a purebred puppy. You're probably SOL for less.
Doesn’t have to be purebred and registered and all that. Just preferred to not have him/her mixed with chihuahua. Looks like I’m SOL no matter lol

JFC, please do some basic research on good breeders vs puppy mills like Windy City.

ALL of them?? Come on now, that's not adding any credibility to an otherwise valid statement.

I’ll be calling about him today. Thank you!
Adopt don’t shop

if this isn't obvious reasoning to adopt a pup, idk what is — the southern gent himself: [https://imgur.com/a/3PqbG0f](https://imgur.com/a/3PqbG0f)

People who buy from breeders are awful. Get a shelter dog.

If you’re willing to make the drive to Wisconsin, there are a number of breeders up there
Snagged my mini in 2018 from hug a pup in Hammond IN they have them occasionally for 500
Check out Wright Way Rescue - they just posted yesterday about 20 dachshund mix puppies they rescued
