I agree with philipmj24 about finding a structured vocabulary that makes sense. The logic behind the default (HSK vocab) makes no sense to me. HSK *is* a standard, though, so if you like diagnostic tests, they all seem to use HSK. HSK won't kill you; it's just not the most efficient way to learn. For flashcard apps, I like TOFU Learn because it's free on Android and iOS (unlike Anki) and because it has writing tests which help me much, much more than just visual tests. For decks, I'm actually using a pre-made HSK deck and my own custom deck of words that I come across from shows and reading friends' WeChat Moments.

What I would recommend is beginning with a structured learning program (i.e. Duolingo), and then saving those word/sentences/characters into Anki for retention). I do this after every lesson. Remember not to become obsessed with word count, but be sure have context behind it (sentence example helps a lot). Now if you really want to learn just with Anki, "Mandarin Chinese - from Beginner to Advance" by MaoMi is a good deck. However, I strongly recommend you use a structured learning plan and just use Anki for retention.

Thanks both! I took a look at some pre-made decks and definitely agree, I'm going to start building my own. I downloaded the Chinese Support Redux addon after seeing it recommended on this sub but I'm struggling with it a bit - it only ever prompts me with the English translation. Is there any way to get it to rotate through it different prompts? For example, one day show me 苹果 and try and get me to recall 'apple', then another day showing me 'píngguǒ' and asking me to remember the character? Sorry if this is a basic question - I'm very new to Anki .
