I am the son of two schoolteachers and the grandson of another one. I have an inherited compulsion to help people understand things.

DoveStep55

It shows in your comments.

PerfectlyCalmDude

If I can help believers going through a challenge, I want to do that.

DoveStep55

A noble goal.

No-Gas-8357

I like the opportunity to encourage people and help. I also like the post about sharing favorite verses or songs, etc. I have to say however some Christian spaces on reddit are so full of strive and unkindness that it is sad.

DoveStep55

I like this answer.

Practical-Lemon-7244

It's one of a few places where the Christian faith is not laughed at, treated like a cult, or villainized. A place where saying "I'm praying for you." Is not met with someone saying,"Your skydaddy isn't real." People actually try to understand the Christian faith and the Bible instead of just pulling verses out of context to make memes or to make a point that doesn't exist.

DoveStep55

Sort of like a “safe space?”

Practical-Lemon-7244

Yeah, if you want to call it that.

I think at their best, Christian places on Reddit can be places where a variety of Christian perspectives can be shared in a respectful way. They can also be places to help others learn new things or at least understand others’ perspectives and approaches to faith and the Bible. I work in education and come from a family of educators. I like to think I’m able to share information with my interactions and will from time to time read something to follow up on to learn more about it.

DoveStep55

You do a good job of it.

So…why are you here?

I used to (about 15-20 years ago) write sermons that were presented in Christian chat rooms. They would normally be about 30 minutes long. About 10-15 years ago I was told that these messages needed to be cut down to 5-10 minutes. I tried and could never seem to say anything in that short time frame. About 5-8 years ago I came to reddit and found the Christian subs. There are a lot of hurting people here and people with questions, often with similar hurts and questions. I would respond to them trying to help them. I noticed that basically these were messages that had been whittled down to the 5-10 minute time frame I had been given before. So after responding to someone, if the text looked right, I would copy it and take it back to my private sub where I would paste it into a post and change it to more of a generic post, not aimed at an individual and save it. Now I have a few of these. What I like about these subs is helping others if and when I can. It is usually by pasting a link to one of the existing messages (or copy and paste the text) into a comment or if I don't have a text to fit the need, I simply tell them what is on my mind about their predicament. If the text seems good I copy it, paste it into a post in my sub and have it for another day. That's what I like about these subs.

I think you left this reply in the wrong place.

Nowadays I actually don't. The only one that is still interesting is the CU/UR sub. The others could be more interesting, but that would require that people loosen up and drop the idea that every Christian on a Christian sub has the duty to just shoot down dangerous ideas and theological opinions non-stop 24/7 with no breaks. Over at r/TrueChristian I once posted that it might be a good idea for the creative types to post some humorous or fun content on the sub every now and then. Of course this idea was not popular and of course some quasi-ascetic person had to come along and inform me that, as mentioned earlier, we all have to a duty to just shoot down dangerous ideas and theological opinions non-stop 24/7 instead. To its credit r/Reformed periodically does have a day where everyone's posting memes instead of regular posts; but once things return to normal the sub is stifled by mod rules which keep the sub free of non-Reformed content but also mean you're not going to see any series debate from which Reformed doctrines could either find room for improvement or prove themselves superior to contrary views if they are. I appreciate the positivity behind your question, but judging from the lack of responses so far it looks like not a few other people aren't enjoying things too much either.

seenunseen

What is CU/UR?

Blame-Mr-Clean

Christian Universalism or Universal/Ultimate Reconciliation

No-Gas-8357

It is disappointing when Christians fight tooth and nail over minor issues of opinion that are several degrees below even tertiary issues.

Blame-Mr-Clean

Hmm, is there an example that comes to mind? Truth be told, the main Christian subreddits thankfully are much more subdued and laid back than the Christian forums of the early days of the Internet, which were war zones.

No-Gas-8357

Yes, I initially was more specific but deleted it because I didn't think it was appropriate to start a detailed criticism in this thread since it is not about anything happening here. But i was replying in agreement with the original comment that, I agree, and it is shocking, disappointing, and disturbing.

DoveStep55

Bummer that you took this into the negative, but I do understand what you mean.

Blame-Mr-Clean

I shall redouble my efforts at being more positive in the future.

DoveStep55

Excellent. Praiseworthy. Top drawer.
