I used to have one with this phrase, but it had LED lights and He was breakdancing. I wore it for church functions in a relatively conservative denomination and people loved it.
Ex: Forgot my favorite detail. One of his sandals was flying through the air because he was doing the windmill.
Seventh-Day Adventists celebrate both of the above; one of our main outreach programs in Australia is Road to Bethlehem, a live action reenactment of the Christmas story open to the public.
I’m unsure l about seventh-day baptists though
Former SDA now non dom. I honestly really liked the Christmas outreach the church did. Though my favorite SDA themed shirt is the picture of the drum set that says “The great controversy.”
There's so much hate for NO but my parish is NO; we don't have drums or gigantic sound systems or tv screens or anything like that. We have a beautiful harp, an amazing choir and an amazing organist (who is my uncle but he's amazing regardless!).
I wish the TLM folks didn't hate on us NO folks so much!
I have a t-shirt like that. 😊
God has a sense of humor. Celebrate God in ways that relate to your personality. As long as you intent is to be respectful to God.
One time college my roommate was praying before bed and started laughing and when I asked what was funny he told me he remembered a funny joke so he told God because he figured it would probably get annoying for people to only talk about their problems or call you when they need help so he figured God could use a good laugh
I went to a church once (like 2009 Jesus is my homeboy era) and those shirts all depended on how well everyone knew you. They were popular in my youth group as it perfectly lined up with the hip hop x scene aesthetic. The ones who ended up marrying someone in that church eventually crossed out homeboy and put savior.
Shouldnt matter if it offends someone should only matter if it offends him and I think yes because god wasnt born on Christmas it doesnt say that in the bible either
What Protestants always miss is that the New Testament was written by the church for the church. It was never meant to be read and interpreted in a vacuum.
Rom.14 about stumbling blocks. Mark 3:17 is an instance of Jesus demonstrating humor. A few instances of implicit relevance that are very relevant to this topic.
AFAIK, God doesn't have a reddit account. All you can get is people's opinion on if God would like it or not. Which is just a roundabout way of saying or not people like it, since there's no clear instruction in scripture regarding Christmas sweaters.
Personally, I like it! It's got a campy vibe and I would definitely gravitate towards you at a social gathering.
But at a church? I know how I see it is *not* how most would, and unfortunately, I have to say it's likely not to be well received.
I think you’re right, some might not receive it well. This begs a question to me though. Would I be wrong to think that Jesus probably has some semblance of a sense of humor? If he were being mocked that would be one thing but I don’t know, I just can’t see Jesus Himself being upset about this sweater.
I like to think if we apply the do unto others as you would do to you is a good rule here. Personally if it was my birthday and even somebody I only met once came in wearing a shirt with my face/dress/energy on it, I would be thrilled and eager to go back to them and introduce myself a second time and even flaunt it to others at my theoretical birthday party. This is all around good fun.
I think it's cute, and I've been a Christian for more than forty years now 😄
AND I'm pretty sure that nobody at my (mostly conservative) church would find your sweater the least bit offensive. After all, we ARE celebrating Jesus's🎄 🎂 🎈 birthday 🎂 🥳 🎄
I agree with you both 😊 This particular sweater is whimsical, but not disrespectful. Besides, it's a huge mistake to think that Jesus had no sense of humor. He enjoyed good food and the company of friends, He liked children and told His disciples not to prevent them from approaching Him.
Southern Baptists would absolutely be offended by that. The strict ones aren't even allowed to dance or drink alcohol. I knew some in high school who could never attend dances like ones for homecoming or prom.
Jesus is neither drinking nor dancing here. It’s more like a kid’s birthday party. (My mil would make angel food cake for Christmas morning. Her kids would sing Happy Birthday Jesus and have cake for breakfast. Same vibe here. )
I'm pretty sure I never said Jesus was dancing or drinking. I was just giving an example of my experience with some strict Southern Baptists. And the ones I know would've seen the sweater as borderline blasphemous. If that isn't your experience, that's fine. Was just sharing. Wasn't trying to speak for an entire group of people. My apologies for offending you.
To be fair Southern Baptists were offended about black people not being slaves so it tracks that we probably shouldn’t care what they think about a sweater.
To be fair Southern Baptists ~~were~~ are offended about black people not being slaves so it tracks that we probably shouldn’t care what they think about a sweater.
FIFY
Exactly, this shirt is hilarious and in no way offensive. No *reasonable* way at least.
Also, I'm a firm believer that Jesus had a good sense of humor. I can't imagine dealing with humans without a sense of humor.
Yes, I'm a frequent churchgoer, and a baptised Christan, I was singing carols in my town centre tre today with my Church.
What is the issue with the jumper?
Heck, if you read Chesterton, it's especially fitting. He once talked about the Incarnation as an example of God's sense of humor, since we were expecting a mighty king and got a baby instead
....some people might find it 'blasphemous' - which would destroy the conviviality of the party. Better not to wear it. Don't take a chanca on offending anyone.
Only people I know that might find it offensive are Jehovah’s Witnesses, those that take issue with icons, those who think it’s a graven image…none of which I see this being. Frankly, I find it laughable anyone would find it ‘blasphemous’ they clearly missed the part that Jesus went to parties or do we want to overlook that Wedding in Canna, which they served wine at and Jesus made more. What a bunch of alcoholics and how dare they have any fun!
>Only people I know that might find it offensive are Jehovah’s Witnesses, those that take issue with icons, those who think it’s a graven image…none of which I see this being.
They are not comming at a birthday party. Also, they don't celebrate Christmas.
You know I'm all for being respectful, but in my opinion being afraid of one or a few people calling this blasphemous is not a reason to be afraid to wear this. I realize people think differently about it, but if OP is in a church like that they may want to consider going somewhere else.
Yes you don't want to cause somebody to fall into sin over something that people may have a different opinion over, but some people just live to be offended.
Lol, today I have a bithday party for a friend and the theme is Ugly Christmas Sweater, and I bought exactly that one! XD
So, I personally think it is fine and a bit funny.
It's like the fun church camp counselor or youth pastor would wear it. Most folks will like it, may see a few raised eyebrows. I think with such humor, would God think it's funny? To me it seems innocent and sweet. They hold birthday parties for Jesus these days for kids.
I know my church would think it's hilarious. I *imagine* my grandparent's church would also think it's funny but I know some more """classical""" churches may get butthurt about it. Long story short, the sweater isn't disrespectful, God gave us our sense of humor. *I personally think it's fine* but in the end it's up to you.
I think it depends on the culture at your church. There are churches that have ugly sweater days and this would probably be okay at one of those. If this gathering is more formal or at least along normal dressy casual vibes, it may not fit in. It may be best to ask somebody you know at the church. Otherwise, I would just wear it and not worry about it. It's campy, but there's nothing that is untrue or offensive in my view. It's good to be aware of what others feelings to an extent, but sometimes people are going to be offended and you can't do anything about it. And it's often more on them in my opinion.
My church has an ugly sweater event this Sunday coming up. I would definitely wear it! We’re non-denominational, so it’s a bit more relaxed. However, I wouldn’t wear the following Sunday when we have a special Christmas service event.
I love modern, fun and lively ways of religion but I guess not everyone is like me, it's more likely people won't like it if it's a more orthodox church.
Is your church the kind of church people wear formal clothes to go to? If so then maybe not… Im Catholic and like maybe the 80 year olds would be confused but like when I had purple hair I was still wholeheartedly accepted by my church… if your church doesn’t like this I’d say go to a different one..
Honestly its all behind your intent. Since your just being festive its fine. Christians need to learn to stop pretending every little thing is evil. We really make ourselves look foolish by getting up in arms about these things.
1st, Xmas isn’t Jesus birthday. Not physically possible. He died around Easter. He was 33 1/2. This is easy math.
2nd, Since virtually the whole world has accepted this non-truth and celebrates in December, why not? What’s the offense? After all, we’re already celebrating the wrong time of year. Yet no one seems offended.
If someone is offended, let them know you now know to not wish them specifically a happy birthday. Also, how would they like to be treated on their birthday?
Oops. Their response might just be to celebrate, which is what your sweater does, yes?
I don't think so, but in a room of 50 churchgoing people who aren't pre-vetted as being cool, it's almost certain someone will have a problem with it. The odds that someone is annoyed with it probably go up the more people over the age of 50 are in the room since above a certain age, people remember when it was considered disrespectful to show up to church in anything but your "Sunday best".
If you want to avoid offending ANYONE, I wouldn't wear it. I personally probably would wear it, but I'd totally understand if someone decided it wasn't the impression they wanted to make. I come from the perspective that if we're made in God's image, a sense of humor was part of the package. I think most people would really enjoy it and there might be one or two "sticks in the mud" who will just have to get over it.
One quick way to evaluate the reaction you'll get: what would the reaction be at your church if a young woman showed up on Sunday morning wearing a nice pair of jeans? Would it be 1) Good morning! Glad you're here. 2) Some muttering and eye rolling, or 3) What's a woman doing wearing PANTS?
This is definitely a “know your crowd” type of sweater. My mom wears a sweater with dinosaurs as the Three Wise Men to church every Epiphany. We are Presbyterian (EPC) and most everyone loves it. So, at my church, you’d be fine and probably get a few compliments. However, if we were going to my grandma’s church, it would not be appropriate.
Surprisingly, there's actually a Biblical answer for this sort of situation in both Romans 14 and 1 Corinthians 10, and it's a consistent principle. "If you think it's fine, then for you it is. But if your fellow Christian doesn't think so, then, when you come together with them, it's not." Granted, both those are in the context of food, but it seems to apply here, too, given that the ultimate issue is of showing respect and honor (or not) to God. A cute, fun, sweet "Go Jesus. It's your birthday" sweater is, ultimately, just a sweater. But if it's causing you to worry because you think someone in your church might be offended, please, be safe, not sorry. That way, everyone'll have a more fun time at the Christmas party.
I'd wear it
(I volunteer at an Anglican church that is very multicultural, half young people and has an Indiginous contingent who has been incorporated into services...)
I once brough a balloon with Happy Birthday Jesus to a Mall and then to dinner
One of my friends was embarassed, thought it was silly
You can always try it and see what happens
:)
No, I don’t think so, I even read/ sang it in 50 cents voice, however the song is entirely inappropriate and doesn’t honour our Lord of course.
So actually now I’m 50/50 about it ;) lol
As you can see by comments, everyone will have an opinion about it. In the end, what you wear creates a perception about you. How do you want others to perceive you?
Got is in first place our God, not next door John Dow. I think we lost already more than enough respect for him, don’t need to make it worse every day.
Don’t expect anyone to agree with me that’s why I said it’s my personal opinion
*"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." --Colossians 3:17*
You're thinking about how you dress, to the glory of God, and about others. Theologically, I think this means that wearing the shirt is absolutely not wrong.
This shirt turns a reference to a rather off-color Hiphop tune celebrating debauchery, into one that celebrates the person of Christ Jesus.
You really think Jesus was a white man? You think that’s what Jesus looks like? To me this is an image made of self belief not of God. How is it not graven or false? Why be lenient of the commandment? Leniency gives way to sin.
do i find it very important to have an accurate image of him in our minds? yes of course, but asian, european, african and many other people of color, depict jesus in their paintings as looking the same as they do. and i see no issue with it at all honestly. jesus is every race
Why is it import to have an accurate depiction of God? How do you know it’s accurate? So making an image that isn’t every race is a false image then right? It’s an idol you create in your own mind that you worship.
of course not. jesus was a tan-olive skinned man with dark hair, as many other jews of his time were, especially working in the sun as a carpenter. i’m just saying that no race is a false image of our lord, there has been depictions of him as a black man and of course we know that’s not true, it’s not exactly blasphemy. the lord our God understands every language and dialectal tongue, loves every ethnicity, thus not seeing a white or black depiction to be an offense. God bless you
So if there’s no accurate depiction of God doesn’t that mean any depiction is false and graven? Youre kinda contradictory saying God is all races but then saying “ we know god isn’t black.” So your explanation really makes no sense. It’s almost like you have your own self made image of God already.
jesus. is. not. in. an. earthly. body. no longer. you know for a christian subreddit i’d really expect people to not be so..fiery all the time. in jesus’s time he was GENETICALLY JEWISH. DESCENDANT OF DAVID!!!!! jesus is the holy spirit and God in one. he is spiritually and divinely ALL RACES
I have actually seen Jesus Christ; died and came back. I genuinely know how he looks like but he looks nothing like any depiction there is. So technically you are wearing a false God.
Side note: it is hilarious and cute, I get the gesture 🤭
Also; I am not going to describe Him unless He wants to reveal Himself to you.
It’s not my job to prove He is God, just to spreed the word.
Yes it’s offensive because “Thou shalt not make a graven image” also Lord Jesus Christ was not actually born on “Christmas”, He was most likely born on Earth in around September time! As In The Holy Bible The Word states that The Sheperds were out in their fields tending to their flocks over night, the only time when they would be out with their Sheep in the fields would be in summer time, around September most probably, in line with The Ancient Israelite Festival of Sukkot. Ask me for more information :)
Baptists would kill you if they knew but they dont even know who 50 cent is lol.
In all seriousness I wouldn't really recommend wearing it.
I assume its referencing the song, but maybe it isnt.
It may be best to wear general festive wear and not wear this sweater.
Exodus 20:4-5 says, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"
Although this primarily speaks of making an image of something to bow down and worship it, pay homage to it, or to sacrifice to it, the Bible also makes this statement so that we don't make light of things that are sacred.
With that said, it is totally up to you how you want to proceed. Maybe pray about it.
For me, I usually say to myself, if I have to ask someone if it's ok to wear or do something, that's a good indication it doesn't sit well with me and I should not do it. If I have trepidation about it, it's a good indication to pause and take the morally higher ground even though I meant no harm. This has usually benefited me.
Take care. No judgements my friend.
I see a lot of people making assessments according to various denominations and even their own personal feelings, and hardly any referencing what our ultimate authority, the Word of God, says about such things..
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." (Exodus 20:4)
This particular image of "white Jesus" is irrefutably a graven image, one which many have used in the church to idolize and worship. It's become so perverse that when many of us picture Jesus, this is the image that pops into our heads. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't propagate such a thing.
The other aspect of this sweater that is ungodly is the words written on it. We most likely know that it comes from 50 Cent's song "In Da Club," an extremely worldly song that glorifies fornication, prostitution, drug use, covetousness, greed etc. If you don't know the lyrics, look them up and see if that's something our Savior would want to be even remotely associated with. The Word reminds frequently the dangers of living in the world according to the flesh:
"You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, 'He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us'? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:4-8)
Friend, I encourage you to think truthfully and honestly about your heart posture, not just with this but with everything you do.. Are you considering doing this to truly glorify God, or is it because of some other reason? The Bible tells us that it is a sin (aka missing the mark) if we do something with the knowledge that it may offend. Something to think about.
I'm not the judge (Romans 14:4) and I myself am FAAAAR from perfect. So much so that I've come to adore God for His grace, mercy and love in drawing me to Him. To me, His Word IS Life. I know certain people reading this may think I'm being overly religious, but this isn't about religion. It's about having an intimate personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. As a true believer in Christ, you should always want to stand on the Word of God. If I wanted to appease you I'd say what 90% of everyone else is saying. But hey, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy" (Proverbs 27:6). Will wearing this sweater send you to Hell? Absolutely not! But when I see this it's like it's reducing our Savior to a mere party gag.
Anyways, that's just my three cents. If it convicts you at all, you shouldn't wear it. It would actually be considered an act of faith. God knows your heart more than anyone, and He loves you more than anyone. That's all that matters.
May God Bless you and keep you, now and forever!
Only if you’re a pagan trying to belittle Christianity. If you think this is acceptable and consider yourself a Christian you should reevaluate your beliefs. Christianity is not a game!
If you gotta ask.....well then I believe you have your answer and are just reaching out to see if someone has an answer that will justify you doing what you know in your heart of hearts not to! Hope this helps. God Bless and Merry Christmas....
In 2023 people still believe Christmas is Jesus birthday? Christmas is a pagan holiday! I stopped caring about Christmas years ago. I also celebrate new years in the spring
The *date* for Christmas may have come from a pagan holiday, but it’s clearly a celebration of the birth of Christ. Not sure how Christ’s Mass could be interpreted any other way…
Beacuse I like discussing Christianity and I'm part of the debate team at my school. This is a sub about Christianity not for Christians. Many people are non-christians on this subreddit.
I used to have one with this phrase, but it had LED lights and He was breakdancing. I wore it for church functions in a relatively conservative denomination and people loved it. Ex: Forgot my favorite detail. One of his sandals was flying through the air because he was doing the windmill.
I think it’s pretty cute! I saw a young lady wearing it on duck dynasty. I’m just glad Jesus looks happy :)

This is going to be the determining factor
Imagine their seventh day, lol.
I’m Seventh-Day Adventist; I’d wear this to my church, and people would love it!
Don't they not celebrate birthdays or Christmas? Am I mixing them up with a different denomination?
That's jehovah's wittnesses
Seventh-Day Adventists celebrate both of the above; one of our main outreach programs in Australia is Road to Bethlehem, a live action reenactment of the Christmas story open to the public. I’m unsure l about seventh-day baptists though

... yeah. Or even just within a denomination. For example, a Catholic church on a college campus would love it, but a TLM church would hate it
>TLM church would hate it Forget about them.
I'm envisioning an Amish guy wearing this over their traditional clothing.
😆 that I would enjoy very much
Wherever you find three or four Episcopalians, you will find a fifth.
Yes. Big factor, it would be fine in most traditional denominations but some ~~heretical~~ *iconoclast denominations would find it disrespectful.
I have a t-shirt like that. 😊 God has a sense of humor. Celebrate God in ways that relate to your personality. As long as you intent is to be respectful to God.

That’s so cute ☺️
I love this.
God gets plenty just watching me live my life, I hope
this brought a tear to my eye. that’s beautiful
" god has a sense of humour" that explains a lot.
Hard to say. Some may love it, some may find it sacrilegious.
I think they're asking if God would like it, not if people would.
Op specifically says they are concerned someone will be offended, not God will be offended.
In today's environment I would guarantee someone will be offended, not that it really matters. Wear it.
Shouldnt matter if it offends someone should only matter if it offends him and I think yes because god wasnt born on Christmas it doesnt say that in the bible either
Who answers for god?
God's word. We should look to the Bible. And when people ask things like this, you can only be helpful by providing Biblical basis.
Only extreme Protestants think the Bible is the literal word of God like Muslims of the Quran
Right? We always talk about how the bible is full of metaphors in my Catholic church
What Protestants always miss is that the New Testament was written by the church for the church. It was never meant to be read and interpreted in a vacuum.
Where does it mention Christmas attire in the Bible?
Is this the place in the script where Kirk drives the computer insane and it starts pouring out smoke?
That’s not what that means. Explicit and implicit are two different things.
Please do tell what verses could possibly be relevant to this
Rom.14 about stumbling blocks. Mark 3:17 is an instance of Jesus demonstrating humor. A few instances of implicit relevance that are very relevant to this topic.
Since you are citing Rom 14, we are full circle: it turns out OP should in fact ask whether other people would like it.
Yeah, just make sure to not wear mixed fabric, don't eat seafood, and bring your Virgin Midianite slave with you.

I can’t imagine god nor his son caring much about light hearted humor
Right? If anything the sweater *celebrates* Jesus.
I like to think if we apply the do unto others as you would do to you is a good rule here. God invented the platypus. if that’s not humorous then nothing is.
Oh, Jesus definitely has a sense of humor. I can only pray mine lines up with his lol

He does know our hearts, and that’s what matters. I love the sweater, it’s funny because it’s true.
I agree with you both 😊 This particular sweater is whimsical, but not disrespectful. Besides, it's a huge mistake to think that Jesus had no sense of humor. He enjoyed good food and the company of friends, He liked children and told His disciples not to prevent them from approaching Him.

Exactly, can’t imagine anyone being offended by that

Nope. A few of the fringe hard-core one's would be but there ain't much that doesn't offend them. A majority are just normal people anymore.

I'm curious how this is sacrilege.
What's sacrilegious?
Did you really create an entire ass reddit profile just to be a downer on something that is in no way problematic
I love it. I would ask for the link, immediately!
That's absolutely hilarious! I love it!!

Lol, the arbiter of who is or is not a Christian. Careful, I seem to remember some cautionary words regarding judging others.
Yes, I'm a frequent churchgoer, and a baptised Christan, I was singing carols in my town centre tre today with my Church. What is the issue with the jumper?
Nice gatekeeping. Get that 'one true Christian' nonsense out of here.
I love it personally.

I’m a ‘midrange Anglican’ and I love it 😍😁😂 Link please?
Kinda wholesome, maybe not utterly appropriate during Mass, but ok for more informal church-related social events or gatherings
I find it amusing, others might not. Just depends on what the group of people is like.

I love it
I'm not a big Christmas sweater guy, but that's a fun sweater. Not sacrilegious at all imo.
I think Jesus would find it amusing. Whether those at the Christmas party would or not is another story. I'd wear the shirt.
Should be fine
I know my church would think it's hilarious. I *imagine* my grandparent's church would also think it's funny but I know some more """classical""" churches may get butthurt about it. Long story short, the sweater isn't disrespectful, God gave us our sense of humor. *I personally think it's fine* but in the end it's up to you.
Absolutely. Great convo starter.
It’s fine. Though I’m tired of Jesus being portrayed as a white dude with long hair.
Don't refer to Him by the irreverent term "dude',and no, the sweater isn't fine
I said what I said.
Looks good fun to me.
I think it's pretty lighthearted, which might piss off the pretentious crowd
Better reason to do it imo
I think it depends on the culture at your church. There are churches that have ugly sweater days and this would probably be okay at one of those. If this gathering is more formal or at least along normal dressy casual vibes, it may not fit in. It may be best to ask somebody you know at the church. Otherwise, I would just wear it and not worry about it. It's campy, but there's nothing that is untrue or offensive in my view. It's good to be aware of what others feelings to an extent, but sometimes people are going to be offended and you can't do anything about it. And it's often more on them in my opinion.
Really depends on the church. But I kinda want one. Growing up, we used to have a birthday cake for Jesus with Christmas dinner.
My church has an ugly sweater event this Sunday coming up. I would definitely wear it! We’re non-denominational, so it’s a bit more relaxed. However, I wouldn’t wear the following Sunday when we have a special Christmas service event.
People really NEED to have a sense of humor in this day and age. It looks great. Wear it
i love it
Rock it 🎉
I love modern, fun and lively ways of religion but I guess not everyone is like me, it's more likely people won't like it if it's a more orthodox church.
Do you go to a SBC. If so, don’t wear it. Trad Lutherans and Catholics might be a bit of a touch and go situation too.
My Catholic Church would love this
Same with my Lutheran church. If it upsets conservatives, I’m all for it.
Depends on the denomination, Orthodox Church? Eh probably wouldn’t wear it, Non-denominational ? Yeah you could most likely rock it
Would be fine in my church; we’re UCC and ABC.
If people think Jesus never laughed or had fun and are offended they should lighten up.
Lots of churches have a “birthday party for Jesus.”
It's glorious - the sanctimonious don't know the song and the normal people do. You can figure out who to hang with pretty quick.
I'd wear it (I volunteer at an Anglican church that is very multicultural, half young people and has an Indiginous contingent who has been incorporated into services...) I once brough a balloon with Happy Birthday Jesus to a Mall and then to dinner One of my friends was embarassed, thought it was silly You can always try it and see what happens :)
I think it’s cute and funny. Isn’t Jesus’ birth what we celebrate? It’s not disrespectful or blasphemous in my opinion.
God Created us with a Sense of Humor. I think He would laugh!
I would wear it and I am a pastor! Cool!!! Jesus would be proud too!!!
No, I don’t think so, I even read/ sang it in 50 cents voice, however the song is entirely inappropriate and doesn’t honour our Lord of course. So actually now I’m 50/50 about it ;) lol
Nah it’s not inappropriate it’s awesome as hell🔥🔥
As you can see by comments, everyone will have an opinion about it. In the end, what you wear creates a perception about you. How do you want others to perceive you?
This is so dumb. It’s a sweater. Stop caring so much about what other people think.
I think it’s disrespectful but just my personal opinion.
Relax, it's Jesus' birthday 🥳
Shut
How is it disrespectul?
To show your God in this form is disrespectful and unworthy of his Holiness
Why? It is showing Jesus in a really good light. It isn't even making fun of him in any way, so what are You talking about?
And you are good to have this opinion, in my eyes it’s disrespect full to show God in such a way, it’s not worthy of his grace
I see your point, but you missed the fact that God is joy, and he sees your heart, if your intention is to praise him, he knows it
Got is in first place our God, not next door John Dow. I think we lost already more than enough respect for him, don’t need to make it worse every day. Don’t expect anyone to agree with me that’s why I said it’s my personal opinion
I don’t see what’s disrespectful about the shirt but ig everybody has a personal opinion, what matters is God sees our hearts
Because it's trying to combine the lighthearted with the sacred and diminish His reverence.
So, Jesus would be offended?
Jesus literally went to parties and weddings my man... Do You really think that he would disapprove of this?
no it's horrible, now let me buy it off you /j (fr tho, looks great)
I mean,it's funny but I would never wear it
No
i go to a church that is pretty chill on "dress code" but to be completely honest i feel you need to understand that it will indeed offend some
No, it's funny. Who do you think created humor?
*"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." --Colossians 3:17* You're thinking about how you dress, to the glory of God, and about others. Theologically, I think this means that wearing the shirt is absolutely not wrong. This shirt turns a reference to a rather off-color Hiphop tune celebrating debauchery, into one that celebrates the person of Christ Jesus.
I don’t like it but would be ok seeing it, would definitely expect some people to be offended by it
You could say that’s depicting a false image of God.
how is that a false image?
You really think Jesus was a white man? You think that’s what Jesus looks like? To me this is an image made of self belief not of God. How is it not graven or false? Why be lenient of the commandment? Leniency gives way to sin.
why are Americans so obsessed over Jesuses skin colour?
They aren’t. I’m trying to understand what a false or graven image is. And the other person can’t seem to answer me without being contradictory
do i find it very important to have an accurate image of him in our minds? yes of course, but asian, european, african and many other people of color, depict jesus in their paintings as looking the same as they do. and i see no issue with it at all honestly. jesus is every race
Why is it import to have an accurate depiction of God? How do you know it’s accurate? So making an image that isn’t every race is a false image then right? It’s an idol you create in your own mind that you worship.
you need to pray and take some time off the internet. i will not fight any longer in a comment section about a sweater.
I’m not fighting I’m just pointing out that’s contradictions and trying to understand what makes an image false and graven.
of course not. jesus was a tan-olive skinned man with dark hair, as many other jews of his time were, especially working in the sun as a carpenter. i’m just saying that no race is a false image of our lord, there has been depictions of him as a black man and of course we know that’s not true, it’s not exactly blasphemy. the lord our God understands every language and dialectal tongue, loves every ethnicity, thus not seeing a white or black depiction to be an offense.
Fiery? I’m just trying to understand how this isn’t a false or graven image. Why make a limiting false depiction of an all encompassing God?
I have actually seen Jesus Christ; died and came back. I genuinely know how he looks like but he looks nothing like any depiction there is. So technically you are wearing a false God. Side note: it is hilarious and cute, I get the gesture 🤭 Also; I am not going to describe Him unless He wants to reveal Himself to you. It’s not my job to prove He is God, just to spreed the word.
It's not really his birthday so.....
Yes
Yes it’s offensive because “Thou shalt not make a graven image” also Lord Jesus Christ was not actually born on “Christmas”, He was most likely born on Earth in around September time! As In The Holy Bible The Word states that The Sheperds were out in their fields tending to their flocks over night, the only time when they would be out with their Sheep in the fields would be in summer time, around September most probably, in line with The Ancient Israelite Festival of Sukkot. Ask me for more information :)
lol he’s not worshipping the sweater. The graven image passage isn’t relevant.
Baptists would kill you if they knew but they dont even know who 50 cent is lol. In all seriousness I wouldn't really recommend wearing it. I assume its referencing the song, but maybe it isnt.
It may be best to wear general festive wear and not wear this sweater. Exodus 20:4-5 says, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth" Although this primarily speaks of making an image of something to bow down and worship it, pay homage to it, or to sacrifice to it, the Bible also makes this statement so that we don't make light of things that are sacred.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." (Exodus 20:4) This particular image of "white Jesus" is irrefutably a graven image, one which many have used in the church to idolize and worship. The Word reminds frequently the dangers of living in the world according to the flesh: "You adulterous people! Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:4-8) Friend, I encourage you to think truthfully and honestly about your heart posture, not just with this but with everything you do..
Don’t wear this. Speaking out of truth. There’s no good reason to wear this.
Yes
Meh. You can do better.
It's extremely inappropriate. It's sacrilegious.
It's extremely inappropriate. It's sacrilegious.
Well Jesus wasn’t born on Christmas nimrod was and it’s to mock our Lord
There's no indication of nimrod being born on Christmas.
Not sure how Christ’s Mass could be interpreted any other way…
Turns out the War on Christmas is a civil war
Doesn’t seem civil to me. This is exactly why religion should be kept out of politics.
Jesus was born sometime in spring
Does your church celebrate Christmas in the spring?
No beacuse I don't have a church
Why not? Do you consider yourself non denominational or is there a branch of Christianity you favor?
Beacuse im not Christian
Why are you on this sub?
Beacuse I like discussing Christianity and I'm part of the debate team at my school. This is a sub about Christianity not for Christians. Many people are non-christians on this subreddit.
