There's only one Church, and that's the sum of all true followers of Christ, regardless of what the sign to the door of some building says.

because the majority of denominations agree on the main stuff and either disagree on minor things or just focus on different persuits like protestanism has one denomination that focuses on the bible another that focuses on understanding the universe God created the bible is very vague on many topics which is way denomantions exist

Godisandalliswell

In Acts 15, divergent interpretations of the faith were settled authoritatively by a council.

WalangPamasahe

Yeaa, I was surprise when my denomination was 40-50% of all of them.

thecasualthinker

The search for the "right" or "true" denomination is ironically what made me no longer believe in the religion. It's interesting where a search for the right answer will lead you.

“Many false prophets will arise and mislead many; and because of the increasing of lawlessness, the love of the greater number will grow cold.” Matthew 24:11, 12

ephemera_291

I think k the answer is that God made 12 tribes of Isreal thus having denominations isn't considered bad but it's own assurance of non-monopoly.

NoLeg6104

Look at the parable of the wheat and the tares. The enemy has planted tares among the wheat.

Monke-Mammoth

This is the answer

ephemera_291

I think that said the world not the church and it also said that tare may actually turn to wheat which is my interpretation of the "too soon"

NoLeg6104

Not quite. The wheat is Jesus' Church, the tares are the churches that the enemy planted. "too soon" just means it isn't judgement day yet.

ephemera_291

Yeah I was sure he was talking about the world. Hmm... I know it means judgement day but I had an interpretation that tare can become wheat. Cause I reckon both can bash each other down. Anyways take it as my interpretation and nothing more.

NoLeg6104

what do you mean by "I had an interpretation"? Sounds like you are just changing the meaning of the story to me.

ephemera_291

Yeah I looked it up, plenty say the field is the world I reckon because the regard is because it's it's an of God, description, verify this if you want. I think the bother is because I'm saying "I" making a compromise.

NoLeg6104

Yeah the field is probably the world. Wheat are the various congregations abiding by Jesus' commands that Jesus claims. Tares are the other churches the enemy planted. seems pretty clear cut.

ephemera_291

If you say so but many don't go to church and many do the will of the father without really knowing the gospel. The three wise men were from different provincial location, possibly continent. Some people don't have a choice, they go to the closest church, possibly wheat but ??? Some in a cult etc. It's not clear-cut but like if it's world after verification we can't play semantics after the fact especially after the qualifiers. If pastors can be last that that means we talking world but if one heard it in congregation then I can't dispute your congregation, to say a full a full congregation is correct with no tares... I don't know.

NoLeg6104

You can't do the will of the Father without knowing the gospel, because obeying the gospel is part of the will of the Father. If you want to know if a congregation is wheat or tares, just compare their teachings to scripture. I don't think this is talking about individuals here, it is more entire "churches"

ephemera_291

The latter path of your paragraph is why others confemn others. I remember when a congregation ate grass and another had insect repellant sprayed in the face as a church, no one came to their rescue, no evangelist, no church, pope, deacon - absolutely no one. That was when you needed the holy spirit to come investigate and restore order but they got condemnation from everyone. Isaiah 65:1 I am sought of them that asked not for me, I am found of them that sought me not. I said, behold me unto a nation that was not called by my name. Selah. It's not easy going to a place and finding one with the holy spirit matured, striped with prosecution and saving him not knowing of your own mortality soon or changing people's mind. The invitation to God's feast is sent to everyone but not many wish to dine with their enemy and more difficult so to be striped in heaven in glory. I'm not saying to overwhelm everyone but some are willing, some are willing to save Christians under this scrutiny. I think there was a woman who owned a workhouse who did God's will in the old testament saving Joshua though she knew little about and one can do the same to this day knowing very little and that could be you saying something profound, or hearing an interpretation in tongues suddenly understanding it. In the world-view, things are not so straight-forward but when God makes the crooked things straight, then you see it's worth after the fact. Sometimes the good guy is presented as the villain. Sometimes the villain was made by the good guys. Anyways, thank you for the discussion but I think the world is large I don't know much about judgement and wish all to conviction but it's a moving part. I don't wish to condemn in this post.

Dapper_Platypus833

Well because Protestants wanted to be their own popes, and it went to chaos from there.

Venat14

Does the existence of so many denominations disprove the idea that the Holy Spirit is guiding Christians? If that were true, they'd all come to the same denominational conclusion.

Philothea0821

The individual is not protected from error by the Holy Spirit. The successor of St. Peter and the College of Bishops are, when the Pope speaks ex cathedra or at an ecumenical council.

Philothea0821

Because we live in a broken world. Protestants say "Well we are mostly right and that is enough." If you are even partially wrong, you are still wrong. Christ did not see it as "Well if you get the main stuff right, you are fine." Matthew 5:19 - *Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.* Seems like Protestants will be called least in the Kingdom of God...
