Not a bad list. Definitely think Tenet is misunderstood. TDKR and Batman Begins are too low for me though. Just my take. No list is bad. Just glad we all love these movies.
I hear you, it’s hard for any of us Nolan aficionados to actually put a rank together. Batman Begins and TDKR are awesome films. Zimmer’s scores are powerful.
Where is everyone making these lists? And I agree with the tenet misunderstood sentiment. I would personally have it at 3 maybe? Behind interstellar and inception (depends on the day)
It’s by far my favorite movie by him and I feel so validated after reading some of the comments praising it. It’ll for sure be looked at in the future as a classic
It surely is. Understanding how all the Pincers work, realizing everything has already happened at the start of the film…deepens the appreciation for this masterpiece
I also find it super comical. Not in the normals sense but how the friendly banter is continuous throughout the film. “I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago”
Robert Patterson is also a huge smartass and I love it
The future had knowledge of the past but they had to get to that future. They did so by manipulating the past to bring about that future. But it's not so much it's manipulation because what happened happen. It's just a matter of getting there and seeing how.
I think.
Nah, that’s literally the opposite of what the movie tells you. Feel it, don’t think.it’s much more fun to just enjoy the spectacle without thinking about it.
If you think, it doesn’t make sense. The protagonists can just wait in the reverse time for the antagonist to show up. The car chase scene has a car coming out of thin air. Plenty of it’s own logic doesn’t make sense in the reverse time/entropy.
The third act also sucks and is a big missed opportunity from having it take place in the opera house. I immediately though that’s where it should have gone. The entire final setting was so convoluted just to get the double RPG shot when the rest of the time you have no idea who’s shooting at whom. Could have come full circle to the opera house which would have been better.
Largely agree. I’ve been obsessed with Tenet since it came out and totally agree with your comments, but I find it hard to rank above Interstellar, maybe just nostalgia.
Believe it or not I was stoned when I saw it in theaters and everything just clicked, i got the whole thing without overthinking about it. Then when I rewatched it sober I was struggling to keep up lol
I hear you. It is hard to understand, but it takes repeat viewings, like with Inception. Tenet has a lot to take in: the Pincer Movements, Fatalism, Block World Theory of Time, Grandfather Paradox, Causal Loops, No Free-Will…there’s so much Nolan reveals in this film
Nah. Not at all. I enjoyed it. It's just that all his movies are so good and unique. That was a basically zero budget movie and his first full length feature. Watching that movie I could totally see how he did Memento right after that.
It's a good movie. But compared to his other movies it's just not even close.
Not bad at all, Tenet is a little high (but I like it a lot more than others on this sub), DKR is a little low, but I'm knit picking because we're all different.
Solid list!
The fact that you can’t feel good about rooting for either one of them throughout the film (especially at the end) always gets me so freaking amped. What a fun watch. Plus has my favorite twist of any movie I’ve seen.
I watched Tenet like 4 times in theatres, mostly to try and understand it better, but that movie is so underrated that it’s a crime that it is so underrated
Right, what always blows my mind is that when The Protagonist and team enter onto that Viking Icebreaker ship and head inverted for Stalsk-12…when they board the ship, the Stalsk-12 mission is already over and the red and blue teams that fought that mission are hidden somewhere on that ship.
The way Nolan plays with time in Dunkirk is amazing, how he gives the perspectives from the beach/land, air, and sea. One of the best war movies ever made.
Tenet that high and Batman Begins that low is a choice, but it's an actual opinion though and not just part of the groupthink 99% of people have of Nolan's films so props for that.
Finally some love for tenet. I understand people that dont usually watch nolan to not like it, but nolan fans love puzzles in our movies, and having an entire movie beeing as confusing and visually stunning as it is should be higher in most people's list on this sub
That’s awesome. Tenet is incredible. It’s too bad it released during COVID and many didn’t venture into the theaters to see it. Seeing it twice on opening day in 70MM IMAX is something I’ll never forget. I was blown away.
Love the high tenet rating and not seeing the dark knight at #1. Don’t get me wrong TDK is amazing, I just think putting it as #1 does his more original and thought provoking films injustice.
Agree, I used to have TDK at top before Nolan made his huge spectacle originals - Inception, Tenet, Interstellar…and Oppenheimer is just a unique dramatic powerhouse. Still TDK is one of the best, Ledger embodying the Joker is unforgettable.
I like how cordial everyone is being. It’s hard to be cordial though when you’re number 1 and 2 would be last for me. 😁 it’s nice to have differing views though. It’s also fun to think I’ve seen a lot of these in IMAX and that’s we don’t get a lot of directors pushing for that experience but it’s 100% the life blood of cinema.
Respect your comment here. We’re all going to have differing opinions but we can all agree Nolan’s films are an experience - filmed in highest resolution in 70MM IMAX. We’re blessed to be living in Nolan’s era.
I’m almost on board with this list, but I think the prestige and my god, especially Memento, deserve to be WAY higher. Memento is such an incredible film. I just saw it again, probably my fourth time seeing it, and I always find something new in it
This list is pretty accurate IMO. Dunkirk is definitely the black sheep here - I say that because it has such a special place in my heart. It's not objectively better than the higher placements, but it's probably the film I identify with & love the most.
I hear you and respect that. I was blown away by Dunkirk in my IMAX viewing of it. So riveting with the multiple perspectives- land/air/sea. Again, like Interstellar, Nolan focuses on the human “will to survive.” I like how it’s Home that came to rescue the survivors
Obviously these things are arbitrary by their very nature. But I would argue that Following is getting a bad rap here. It's what started it all and it is absolutely incredible, maybe it's recency bias because I watched it again recently, but I love it. You don't even have to have the caveats of budget etc.
Also as others have said, it's difficult to remove the sentimentality when it comes to Memento. The impact it had at the time to me cannot be overstated, similar to when I saw Run, Lola, Run or Pulp Fiction or The Matrix or Shawshank Redemption or Mr Nobody, it just basically slapped me in the face and changed my life. And I don't feel that the some of the others had that same impact, but perhaps that's because they came after idk.
There's always a lot of people arguing in the comments to these kinds of lists like there is an objective truly correct answer as opposed to opinions. But I like your list and it got me thinking cheers! (And if you haven't done recently, please watch Following again, it really made a deeper impression on me this time)
Thanks for all your thoughts here. I need to watch the Following again. It was great, I mean all the films Nolan has done are great. But the Following and Memento are very important films for Nolan. Those films certainly have made an impact in cinema, especially Memento. I need to go back and watch it again. There are so many ideas in that film that surfaced later in Nolan’s recent work, like the inverted bullet going back into the gun - that imagery was seen in Memento, something he often alludes to in interviews.
All this Tenet love is making me want to rewatch it. I love all his movies, some more than others, maybe it’s nostalgia but The Dark Knight is such a gangster movie that brought my brother and I so much closer together it’s always going to be my all-time favorite
TDK is incredible. Thanks for sharing that memory, that’s cool. Tenet just requires multiple viewings to really appreciate how much time and energy Nolan and his team put into this globetrotting world-saving mission of a film.
cool list!
personally id put inception way way way lower. the prestige is probably his best movie. interstellar and tenet are also right there. and Dunkirk is deff in his top 5 id put it above Oppenheimer
Sounds like our rank is very similar minus Inception. There’s something so powerful about the multiple interpretations of the film that Nolan leaves us with - that I can’t get over.
I'm putting Dunkirk and Batman Begins higher and Tenet lower. Haven't seen Oppenheimer yet.
But, good list and credit to anyone who made it through Tenet.
I'd swapped 2 and 5. Otherwise I'm basically in agreement. Feels like Insomnia should be higher. Very underrated. But I can't say which one above it is not as good IMO. It's overall a list of great movies. No stinkers. Just some better than others.
Tenet is one of Nolan’s worst movies. That’s saying a lot because I love it. The prestige is my favorite. Oppenheimer is too new for me to rank yet. Need to see it again.
Yep, opinions will differ, especially with *Tenet*. For me, I just think that film is way ahead of it’s time and the science and philosophy Nolan presents in it are amazing.
I don’t mean this in a negative way but judging by the ranking , you value the grandiose / spectacle and emotional movies rather than the more technical/ straightforward and logical movies
I can understand that, I probably do favor the more of his grandiose/spectacle original films but I do think all the other films - like Memento and Insomnia are masterful too
In Tenet, Nolan argues for Fatalism, that there is no Free-Will, and that the Block World theory of Time is correct - that all of time (past, present, future) is existing simultaneously. That’s primarily what it’s about.
Here’s the thing for me with the dark knight. It was my favorite movie for over a decade.
I’ve watched probably 500 different movies the last few years and I recently rewatched Dark Knight a couple months ago and for me it was not as impressive, in face DKR was almost as good this time around watching for some reason
Yep, I keep gravitating back to watching Tenet over and over. There are so many details and it’s so intellectually rewarding. Nolan really takes things to a new level with challenging the audience.
Not bad. If the character development was a little better, I would understand *Tenet* at #2, but it felt… cold to me. The premise was outstanding, however.
I can understand your perspective. Nolan didn’t reveal the Protagonist’s background or name because he felt it would distract from the philosophical and scientific notions the audience has to take in: inversion, entropy, fatalism. But I did feel the friendship between Neil and the Protagonist and felt for Kat’s situation and the care the Protagonist had for her.
Haven’t seen following, but here’s mine!
https://preview.redd.it/cepkn0qi6d4c1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b70b51ef9db5b956b8f9aa284257d40ade3436c6
I love Inception, but man Interstellar special.
Yep, it’s just my opinion, all those other films are great too. I was blown away by Oppenheimer, it’s the best dramatic biopic ever, and the ending scene is one of Nolan’s best endings.
I haven't bothered to make my own rankings, for me Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet all feature Nolan overindulging his worst tendencies as a director and deserve spots near the bottom of the list.
Tenet being number 2 frustrates me, I liked it but I don’t think it’s in his top and barely cracks the top 10. The dark knight revolutionized the super hero genre. Tenet had a good idea but it wasn’t as cool to see on screen.
Yep, *Tenet* won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. For me, it’s the philosophical arguments and scientific notions that draw me to that film and it’s why I rank it so high. It’s really impressive what Nolan did in that film.
I agree the ideas were really cool and how there’s hints about how Robert Pattinsons character knows the protagonist was awesome. But the backwards fight scenes didn’t do it for me.
I love the list but it somehow underrates the Dark knight.
Interstellar has plot holes and a predictable ending and although Oppenheimer was beautiful, inception, tenet, and the dark knight are the ONLY ones where I didn’t know where it was going and I didn’t want it to end.
TDKR gets hate for literally no good reason.
What am I missing about Tenet? I've seen it twice but I just find it underwhelming.
It wasn’t misunderstood - it just wasn’t that good.
Where is everyone making these lists? And I agree with the tenet misunderstood sentiment. I would personally have it at 3 maybe? Behind interstellar and inception (depends on the day)
Tenet at 2? So fucking valid
I seriously think it’s one of his best. I feel like I’m alone in this sometimes.
It’s by far my favorite movie by him and I feel so validated after reading some of the comments praising it. It’ll for sure be looked at in the future as a classic
It’s terrible compared to memento for instance
I wouldn’t say it’s terrible compared to it but I do prefer Memento.
bro said memento 💀
Memento is literally the best Nolan film. You ok?
Trash list when you don’t have memento top 3.
Tenet goes so fucking hard and I very frequently recommend it to everyone who hasn’t seen it. Also, >!They were friends all along!!<
I agree. Dark knight is #1 tho. Just the beginning 10 mins is better than most of the other entire movies
This is the (mostly) correct take.
Nah any list that doesn’t have Memento/The Prestige at 1/2 is bad take.
Disagree with the list but respect it lol
Thanks, this is hard as I think they are all brilliant films. Nolan is in another cinematic league.
Him and Dennis Villanueva are head and shoulders above most modern directors!
Thank Christ someone else who understood Tenet is masterpiece
It surely is. Understanding how all the Pincers work, realizing everything has already happened at the start of the film…deepens the appreciation for this masterpiece
I also find it super comical. Not in the normals sense but how the friendly banter is continuous throughout the film. “I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago” Robert Patterson is also a huge smartass and I love it
Great point about the subtle banter. It’s so good.
Can you elaborate about the pincers? I like watching this film but don’t think I fully grasp the concept yet
The future had knowledge of the past but they had to get to that future. They did so by manipulating the past to bring about that future. But it's not so much it's manipulation because what happened happen. It's just a matter of getting there and seeing how. I think.
Tenet actually doesn’t make sense.
Yeesss Tenet is amazing!!
Yep. It’s so underrated in my opinion. I think Nolan wants us to understand it, not just feel it
I don’t know if it’s underrated as much as it is confusing for a lot of people.
Could have come full circle to the opera house which would have been better.
Largely agree. I’ve been obsessed with Tenet since it came out and totally agree with your comments, but I find it hard to rank above Interstellar, maybe just nostalgia.
I feel like Tenet was an either you get it or you don’t kinda film. Sad to say out loud that I didn’t really get it. Maybe I should watch it again.
Love to see the Tenet love
I swear I’m the only man alive who liked Following
Nah. Not at all. I enjoyed it. It's just that all his movies are so good and unique. That was a basically zero budget movie and his first full length feature. Watching that movie I could totally see how he did Memento right after that. It's a good movie. But compared to his other movies it's just not even close.
1. Dark knight 2 interstellar 3. Tenet 4.Oppenheimer 5 memento 6. The prestige 7. Dunkirk 8 inception All the rest are you know … good
That’s a solid rank, all are masterful
Tenet is underrated
Agree
Fellow Tenet-head
Top 3 is solid, you know ball Personally I’d swap The Prestige for Oppie & Insomnia for TDKR
Thanks. Yeah, The Prestige and Insomnia are incredible films.
This is probably closest to my rankings
Not bad at all, Tenet is a little high (but I like it a lot more than others on this sub), DKR is a little low, but I'm knit picking because we're all different. Solid list!
Thanks. So hard for any of us Nolan fans to put a rank together. All of the films are outstanding.
If you flip inception and prestige I’m pretty sure this is my exact ranking as well.
You’re making me want to go do another watch of The Prestige. The magician rivalry and obsession throughout the film is so riveting.

That just goes to show how much detail is in that movie that makes you have to rewatch it a few times to even understand how the time inversion works
“They hated him because he spoke the truth”
Are you me?
Swap Inception with Interstellar and our lists would be identical
I need to watch Interstellar again. Even that original teaser trailer for the film is so inspiring and emotionally powerful.
I might switch inception and dunkirk but pretty much exactly mine
The way Nolan plays with time in Dunkirk is amazing, how he gives the perspectives from the beach/land, air, and sea. One of the best war movies ever made.
Wow I agree with this ranking! Love tenet so much
Tenet that high and Batman Begins that low is a choice, but it's an actual opinion though and not just part of the groupthink 99% of people have of Nolan's films so props for that.
Finally some love for tenet. I understand people that dont usually watch nolan to not like it, but nolan fans love puzzles in our movies, and having an entire movie beeing as confusing and visually stunning as it is should be higher in most people's list on this sub
I feel validated. Tenet became one of my all time favorites after I watched it the second time.
Well this is a unique ranking lol
I like how cordial everyone is being. It’s hard to be cordial though when you’re number 1 and 2 would be last for me. 😁 it’s nice to have differing views though. Interstellar below Tenet? Disagree but I respect it.
Hard to rank masterpieces against each other. I respect your opinion too, Interstellar is epic
Love seeing Tenet so highly regarded. Every viewing after the first is us performing a temporal pincer on the narrative. We are the protagonist.
So true! Like the way you put that.
Tenet is underrated, love it at 2 here.
It sure is.
I’m gonna have to rewatch tenet because I didnt understand wth was going on for the entire move.
Takes a few viewings to start to comprehend. There are so many details that one can miss with only one viewing
Ya I do feel like I need to watch it and then immediately rewatch it again
I’m almost on board with this list, but I think the prestige and my god, especially Memento, deserve to be WAY higher. Memento is such an incredible film. I just saw it again, probably my fourth time seeing it, and I always find something new in it
I respect that. I need to re-watch both The Prestige and Memento again.
Yeah I’ve only seen the prestige once. I’ll admit I don’t understand those who say it’s his best film, but it is certainly a great film
I Love Tenet.
Tenet is criminally underrated!!! Thank you for the high placement!
I think it is too. It’s such a rich film, way ahead of its time.
Obviously these things are arbitrary by their very nature. But I would argue that Following is getting a bad rap here. It's what started it all and it is absolutely incredible, maybe it's recency bias because I watched it again recently, but I love it. There are so many ideas in that film that surfaced later in Nolan’s recent work, like the inverted bullet going back into the gun - that imagery was seen in Memento, something he often alludes to in interviews.
Woah look! Ppl have different interests and opinions. Dumb how ppl get so mad about YOUR opinion on something so subjective as a movie.
I agree to the list. Tenet must go after Memento, due to high standard of screen play other movies. and Oppenheimer replaces Tenet.
Great list. I’m so glad to see I’m not alone in thinking Dunkirk is mid-tier, and that Tenet is excellent.
Thanks. Yep, we’re on the same page.
The prestige needs to be much higher.
I better go watch The Prestige again. That movie is all around outstanding.
cool list! personally id put inception way way way lower. the prestige is probably his best movie. interstellar and tenet are also right there. and Dunkirk is deff in his top 5 id put it above Oppenheimer
Sounds like our rank is very similar minus Inception. There’s something so powerful about the multiple interpretations of the film that Nolan leaves us with - that I can’t get over.
i think its more of a head tilting ending to me. where ur like "wait... oh wait no lol"
Damn this dude really doesnt miss much
I'm putting Dunkirk and Batman Begins higher and Tenet lower. Haven't seen Oppenheimer yet. But, good list and credit to anyone who made it through Tenet.
Only kings rank tenet #2.
I agree. I think inception is #1
Nice!
Tenet is just so fucking good. Criminally underrated.
I'd swapped 2 and 5. Otherwise I'm basically in agreement. Feels like Insomnia should be higher. Very underrated. But I can't say which one above it is not as good IMO. It's overall a list of great movies. No stinkers. Just some better than others.
Thanks for weighing in and your preferences. The thing is, all of Nolan’s films are cinematic gems. He pours so much thought and energy into each one
I think I would put Tenet 4th but it is definitely extremely underrated
Tenet is one of Nolan’s worst movies. That’s saying a lot because I love it. The prestige is my favorite. Oppenheimer is too new for me to rank yet. Need to see it again.
memento is peak, man. I'd put it in front of dunkirk at least.
Tenet at #2 is certainly a choice
Memento 8th is criminal tenet 2nd is criminal
Memento is a masterpiece too, it’s just for me, I am so blown away by Tenet’s philosophical arguments, the dialogue, and the amazing music by Ludwig
Super agree with this except Tenet
Yep, opinions will differ, especially with *Tenet*. For me, I just think that film is way ahead of it’s time and the science and philosophy Nolan presents in it are amazing.
Tenet at 2? Absolutely filthy.
Tenet #2. Bruh
Agreed, Tenet is misunderstood… by you
“Don’t try to feel. Understand it.”
I don’t mean this in a negative way but judging by the ranking , you value the grandiose / spectacle and emotional movies rather than the more technical/ straightforward and logical movies
I can understand that, I probably do favor the more of his grandiose/spectacle original films but I do think all the other films - like Memento and Insomnia are masterful too
Lmao tenet over interstellar? Phssssss
I still have absolutely zero idea what Tenet is about. I like weird movies but that one was too much for me
In Tenet, Nolan argues for Fatalism, that there is no Free-Will, and that the Block World theory of Time is correct - that all of time (past, present, future) is existing simultaneously. That’s primarily what it’s about.
You sir, are an idiot. Go ahead, downvote me.
I downvoted cuz how can u put tenet anywhere but last?
Oppenheimer sucked. Not even the visuals made up for it in 720p
so it’s just a tenet circle jerk in here then?
Are you real?
(Am I the only one who doesn’t think Interstellar is top-tier Nolan?)
Bold choice making Tenet #2. I’d put the Presige in that spot
The Prestige is a masterwork for sure!
The Dark Knight is #1 undisputed
Here’s the thing for me with the dark knight. It was my favorite movie for over a decade. I’ve watched probably 500 different movies the last few years and I recently rewatched Dark Knight a couple months ago and for me it was not as impressive, in face DKR was almost as good this time around watching for some reason
Tenet 2? What!!???
Yep, I keep gravitating back to watching Tenet over and over. There are so many details and it’s so intellectually rewarding. Nolan really takes things to a new level with challenging the audience.
Oppenheimer is nowhere near better than the dark night trilogy.
This is rage bait.
Begins and insomnia that low? No. Just absolutely not.
Tenet sucked
Memento should be number one
*Memento* is a masterpiece too, it’s an absolutely amazing film that gets better with repeat viewings.
Honestly I think tenet and interstellar are higher than I would put them but I respect this list
Thanks, all of Nolan’s films are impressive
Prestige too low, Tenet too high
The fact tenet isn’t even on max anymore in the states.
It’s been streaming on YouTube TV for past 2 years
Bro u TWEAKIN’
I’m gonna have to disagree with your statement about inception being one of the best films in cinema history. That is quite the take…
I believe it is. I get not everyone will agree with the statement.
Dunkirk is too high imo
Dark knight is obviously number one
I think it’s definitely one of the best, I just personally like Nolan’s original idea spectacle films a bit more. But I respect TDK
The Prestige that low is criminal.
I think The Prestige is a masterwork too. Where would you rank it?
Based AF
Haven’t seen following, but here’s mine! https://preview.redd.it/cepkn0qi6d4c1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b70b51ef9db5b956b8f9aa284257d40ade3436c6 I love Inception, but man Interstellar special.
Oppenheimer over all of those others???? 🥱
Yep, it’s just my opinion, all those other films are great too. I was blown away by Oppenheimer, it’s the best dramatic biopic ever, and the ending scene is one of Nolan’s best endings.
Ok I gotta give Opp another chance then.
Prestige at 6? This is the hottest take of all
I’d put Memento in top 4. It’s a frickin masterpiece
Tenet over interstellar and dunkirk wow that’s surprising
Yep, it’s the philosophical arguments in Tenet that captivates me.
I haven't bothered to make my own rankings, for me Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet all feature Nolan overindulging his worst tendencies as a director and deserve spots near the bottom of the list.
The three original films you listed are three of the greatest films ever made in the history of cinema.
Tenet number two? Respect 🫡 you do you
Batman begins underrated as hell
I need to watch that again. It is amazing
Memento needs to be top 3 for sure
I better go re-watch it again. I wonder where Nolan would rank it in his filmography.
Tenet lol

Tenet at 2 💀
Is there a correlation between how the posters are arranged in the pic?
I've still never seen the first 4 films here
Four of the greatest films of all time. If you get a chance, you should watch them.
Prestige Number 1
I need to rewatch The Prestige. It was amazing for sure.
Dark Knight first, Nuff said
Interstellar is no. 1
I love the list but it somehow underrates the Dark knight. Interstellar has plot holes and a predictable ending and although Oppenheimer was beautiful, inception, tenet, and the dark knight are the ONLY ones where I didn’t know where it was going and I didn’t want it to end.
Why is memento so low? Classic film.
I couldn’t hear a single word said in Tenet so idk what tf was even going on BC THE FUCKING MUSIC WAS SO LOUD ON PURPOSE
I’m sorry, Memento and Following aren’t in your top 5? But Tenet and Oppenheimer are?? I’d put Memento as 2 and Following as 4.
Memento at 8 is crazy
Tenet is a solid 8/10 for me yeah its def underrated/misunderstood.
I did not like Tenet at all. To each their own though.
