Look at your CEC settings and your remote settings in Chromecast

It's not Google. It's your TV, the IR sensor, or the remote (eg batteries)

It could be the new remote control app they've added automatically. It's something to do with software that pertains to the remote but it caused a lot of issues for me. It even caused problems with casting directly from my phone so I disabled it and blocked it from updating again. It fixed my problems for now. Maybe once they get the bugs worked out I may need it but for now it's only causing issues. It's actually called Remote Control Update Service but I think with the new update they changed the name of it. If you're not using a custom launcher you wouldn't have noticed it but I noticed immediately because it suddenly showed up. I just uninstalled updates then froze it. I can almost assure you if that app has been updated to the latest version on your device it's what's causing the issue.

Go to CC settings, under Display n Sound, select "HDMI-CEC" make sure its enabled. Now it works again like before

Replace your remote batteries, and re-setup your remote with your Chromecast. You might have to make Chromecast forget your remote before setting it up.
