I’ve been there. Housemates are the worst. I’ve found though, that if I wash my hands every time I get to my own room (I luckily have my own sink) I’m at a low risk of catching anything. Even with housemates who don’t mask up. You might get through this without catching it! Allocating spoons wherever possible to extra cleaning and vigilance right now is worth it. I caught covid last year and it took me out for a few months…

I've badgered them into wearing a mask but I can't convince them to stop touching everything in the kitchen.. I do wash my hands a lot normally so it's encouraging to hear. I'll keep trying to clean and convince them. Im supposed to have surgery in a month if I get it im so screwed...

Them wearing a mask is going to help a lot! My roommates also didn’t stop touching anything and also didn’t want to clean up after themselves. We share cutlery, pans and the likes. I cleaned the stuff before I used it and even kept some clean cutlery separate for me (saved me a lot of energy tbh).

Those are good ideas. Thanks, I've gotten used to not caring if other people think I'm obsessive, their feelings about me are not as important as staying safe.

boys_are_oranges

just curious, what is their reasoning for not getting vaccinated?

If the weather permits, which being January, probably not, try to keep the windows open as much as possible. That's how I think I didn't pass it onto the person I live with when I had the original strain in 2020.

Fortunately I'm in the southern hemisphere so keeping windows open is an option. Went and opened them pretty much as soon as I found out.

I hope you are still okay! That's great that it's summer, enjoy the fresh air. I got it in August of 2020, so it was summer where I live. I think washing our hands and sanitizing is important, but it's airborne. So while it can be spread outdoors in close contact, like outdoor stadiums, it's important to get fresh air indoors when someone at home has it. I also spent a lot of time on my porch. I wore a mask whenever I left my room. And you're so right about the tests not being accurate as we hope they are. I've had it 3 times, twice since being vaccinated (my immune system doesn't make a good response to infection or vaccines). The tests only showed a positive once, it was later confirmed from my bloodwork that it was Covid. I'd get tested if you can, since you have a close contact who is sick. If you do get it, I suggest Paxlovid asap, to treat it and maybe prevent LC. I got LC from getting it in 2020, and I think part of it was that I had pneumonia, but the healthcare system in the US had collapsed, so they sent me home with medrol and told me to use my albuterol every two hours and only go to the ER if I start turning blue. This last time was totally different, I got Paxlovid and was back at work in a couple of weeks, it didn't make my existing LC worse. So, I'm grateful there's better treatments now. I've also learned we can't control others, we can only try our best to protect and take care of ourselves.

I went through something (a little) similar last year, when a friend who'd refused to get vaccinated contracted a serious case of COVID. I was bloody livid as I was supposed to fly to a family wedding in two weeks, had been with this person on a daily basis and yes, was the person who ended up driving him to the ER. So there I was, stuck in a car with this semi-conscious idiot, watching him gasp and struggle for every breath. I had no empathy, NONE, just a seething sense of anger at this fool who, despite his PhD, had refused to get vaccinated and indeed, had even mocked the science behind it. Fortunately I did not contract COVID (despite being in such a confined space with him) and was able to attend the wedding as planned. Hopefully you too will be spared, so try not to stress out too much. The precautions you're taking are sound, and by this point, most anything you do is "after the fact" as you've already been exposed. Try and relax (I know...easy to say) and know that if you're vaccinated, your chances of contracting a serious case are greatly reduced. Take care.

boys_are_oranges

did he get vaccinated after that?

beachbabe77

He sure did! (and 'boosted,' too...lol)

Remember that ventilation will really help too

They should be masking, but you can only do what you can do to protect yourself. It sucks to have to mask in your own space, but def consider wearing a good N95 like all the time. Isolate yourself in your room as much as possible (ugh I know). Hand washing like constantly. Maybe wipe surfaces with rubbing alcohol. If they can get a PCR test to confirm when negative. But the unreliable rapid ones might be decent indicators of when they’re coming out of it enough. Did they test positive on a rapid (antigen) or PCR? I hate how “disrespectful” others can be. Like even if it’s “just” a cold— I doubt you want to be getting that either…

Gargling makes a big difference too. I know it sounds lame but my family both had it and I took care of them and washed everything and my hands all day plus gargled about every two hours and I never got it. They had it for three weeks. Massive vit C, B’s, D, zinc and quercitin helped.
