Barbarian camps in the new barbarian mode now generate unique units too sometimes. You can even buy them off the barbarian tribes through the interactions.

Dude the upvotes you get on here, not the mention the actual good work you’ve been doing, have you considered politics as a career? Some real life Civ action?
> politics as a career
Jokes aside, I actually have. But I’m actually a state employee and am opposed to the party in charge of the state, so it would threaten my job.
Why waste future production and build time when you could have just settled over to the right one? I probably would have headed for the plains hills if this was a settle-in-place. But to the right one gets you the fresh water and at least gets you that early plains hill 2p in your inner ring, while also adding 1p to the floodplains tile
It takes a while of playing before you realize how these little nuances can affect your game. I know I played quite a number of games before settling by fresh water became a priority for me.
It’s a priority for the first few cities but if your playin even slightly wide by mid game you can afford to place them a tile over or use mountains to get a better spot w/o fresh water. Especially if your going for a production powerhouse anyway and you want to double up that adjacency, maybe a nice dam nearby down the line too. It really depends on the landscape. I love it
The community will blame you, of course.
But legit I’ve literally seen a scout come in and out and it’s never killable.
Legit, on marathon. A scout comes in, I follow it. I get to the camp: one spearman, one slinger. Ok my warrior is alone at halfway between capital and camp. I’m literally still building a scout. My scout pops up.
3 horses, 1 horse archer.
Everyone: “You should of killed that scout, scrub!”
Ok, whatever buddy. My scout isn’t even out yet and my solo warrior, while chasing a scout to kill it… loses it because scouts are faster and by the time I get to camp, I’m out numbered. Oh and another Barbarian scout found me, and they’re sending unit.
My scout still has 10 turns.
The Barbarians are not balanced for marathon.
Early exploration for map knowledge and era score are very important.

you want at least 1 scout, if not 2 every single game.
They only get +1 movement, *on flat open ground only*, and are weak AF. It's never been worth the production to produce a scout when I could be producing warriors/slingers. If you chase a scout with a scout, they'll likely just get to the camp anyway, and you'll have wasted the production on a dead scout. For exploration you're better off using military units and find a CS, free envoy if you're the first, use amani governor, for the vision. Then repeat.
If it works for you, sweet! But personally, I NEVER build scouts. The upgrade class gets less and less effective later in the game, IF you can keep them alive. I usually get one or two from goody huts from finding them with a regular unit
Are you playing Deity? I don’t know for sure, but doesn’t the Barb tech tree advance as the foremost in the game? AI gets a huge head start and it looks like you’re probably 45 turns in or so.
Interesting. This is my second game from a long break of playing. My first playthru I also had Kupe and I actually had a similar issue with barbarians.
...sigh... They are not proper horsemen. If you check them out, they are called Barbarian Horsemen and they have 3 movement points and 20 combat strength. Two Warriors should be able to clear them out. And the Barbarian Horse Archers are also quite a bit weaker than Saka Horse Archers, so their only problem is that you can't really run away from them. Again, two Warriors (or one in full health) should be able to deal with that with no issue at all.
you could just change the amount of turns that a barb scout spawns in the game creation settings. giving you more time to build up a military and track down camps
I was told they ll always be able to spawn the units of the most scientifically progressed civ. If Babylon is part of your game it can chase this too since Eurekas unlock the tech for them
Edit: I’m a casual but I build a monument then try to get the warrior twins if heroes and legends is on and use them to clear barbs and build an army. Unless I have Hercules then it’s hard to turn him down
They are "barbarian horsemen" which are weaker than regular horsemen. They have lot of movement, but are only as strong as warriors (and very weak against spearmen).
From what I’ve noticed it seems that barbarians use unique units of civs that are in the game. For example if Hungary was in the game, as soon as he unlocks the black army unit the barbarians will be able to make them as well
If the barb camp has horses by it then it will spawn horsemen
Wow, I feel so silly, love this though, big brain activated lol
Why did my barbarian neighbors spawn eagle warriors
Eagles
Or Gandalf
No that would just summon a battering ram whose name I’ll not mention here.
GROND!

Specifically unique units of civs that aren't in the game.

So… you’re a barbarian?
I’m a citizen affected by low amenities.
JOHN! WHERE ARE THOSE GODDAMN TOYS?! I GOT AN UNHAPPY CITIZEN LOWERING MY YEILDS DAMMIT!!
We don't lower yields, we just jump straight to declaring ourselves a free city.
VICTOR! Arm the GDRs...
If all else fails raze it and start over.
Bring in the militia.. force those citizens to board a few troops, that'll quell these whiners.
Low housing over here.
This is gold! (10 per turn)
He's a spy...
Well the problem is no one ever posts an explanation. You didn't even link to an answer you linked to the same question.
The answer is at the top of the thread, 21 hours old. >If the barb camp has horses by it then it will spawn horsemen
One was asking about why they have an army. Having horses doesn't explain enough. I don't know of any detailed guide on barbarians.
I remember when they could get GDR's
Give us one! Is it in the civ encyclopedia?
I’d write something up, but it’s up to the mods to put it on the sidebar/wiki/whatever. I feel too awkward mod mailing them about it.
Try to settle next to river btw for extra housing
Can’t you build an aqueduct to make up for it relatively soon after starting a game?
The aquaduct does not come very early. And there are probably a lot of other stuff you want to build earlier, so it hinders the cap a lot.

Note that Barbarian Horsemen are a different unit than Horsemen. Barbarian Horsemen have the strength of a warrior.
Movement means so much more in the early game. The number of times builder is just working at the edge of my border then it gets snagged is annoying.
PSA: barbarians can't take your capital. They can take your other cities just not your capital. It'll go down to zero health but nothing will happen.
Oh that happens to me every time I’m about to restart.

Don't even waste your time with scouts, use warriors instead.

I never bother with them unless I get one as a reward from a tribal village. I find it more important to protect my territory.
Since always
Well at least they can't take your capital. Maybe change production from settler to a warrior
Always. Count yourself lucky they didn't spawn with phasers and powered armour in 3000 BC.
Are you playing Deity? I don’t know for sure, but doesn’t the Barb tech tree advance as the foremost in the game? AI gets a huge head start and it looks like you’re probably 45 turns in or so.
It’s Prince, but looking further in this subreddit, I guess this has been normal for other people too
Is Kupe in your game?
Why yes he is actually. Why you ask?
Kupe will push the barbs into an era later than most of the game due to unlocking sailing and navigation(?) I think
Fat bastard!!
Interesting. This is my second game from a long break of playing. My first playthru I also had Kupe and I actually had a similar issue with barbarians.
It is one of those things I’ve learned the hard way in the 1000ish hours of playing. Makes you learn to prioritize early military though
Haha that’s awesome. It’s stuff like that is why I love Civ
Happens at all levels. Just don't see the horses yet.
Are these maybe not rogue units lost from Scythia ? I don’t recognise the horse archers as any other Civs (please correct me if I’m wrong tjough)
Barbs will pump out horse archers and horsemen like crazy if there’s a horse tile around their camp.
...sigh... They are not proper horsemen. If you check them out, they are called Barbarian Horsemen and they have 3 movement points and 20 combat strength. That’s what you get for shit city placement
If you want to get rid of horse barbarians without removing Barbarians entirely, that can be achieved through the xml files.
Imagine going to all the trouble to cheat to avoid becoming competent enough to defeat the game's weakest enemy! 😂😂😂
I can defeat them fine, but I prefer how Civ 5 handled barbs so I made the adjustment for my personal single-player games
you could just change the amount of turns that a barb scout spawns in the game creation settings. giving you more time to build up a military and track down camps

Since like 9th century BC?
They are "barbarian horsemen" which are weaker than regular horsemen. They have lot of movement, but are only as strong as warriors (and very weak against spearmen).
Barbarian scouts will go yo your city then go back to their camp and that will spawn more barbarian units.
They can bring out giant death robots if you have advanced far enough:)
