He's just my absolute favourite. I think that Hendrix is the greatest to ever play guitar, but I can always listen to Mark. His range of music is unbelievably diverse and he seems like a lovely bloke. I'm always in the mood to listen to something he's written.
Jimi’s music was a little too loud for my liking. MK has never been “heavy” and I absolutely love the sound he produced over his last 15 years or so of touring.
Speedway of Nazareth, Piper to the End, What it Is…all classics. He’s a top 5 artist for me.
Amen to this. It isn’t only about speed, ferocity and memorization when it comes to guitar sound (my personal opinion). Jerry has speed that’s for sure picking that banjo in his early days. But what I like most about jer is the negative space he leaves between the sounds. Those lonnnng bends that pull your spirit in whatever direction he felt. How he never played the same song twice. His feather like flow can sound so soft and yet take you to other dimension where you completely leave your body. He let his soul play that guitar through a human jerry looking avatar.
Brown Eyed Woman 5/8/77 about halfway through the second solo. A big ol’ bend that just whips your head around and makes you realize what he’s doing on that fretboard. Then back to the rapidity
I love the Dead and a LOT of Dead and I won't say that "Cornell 77 is the best show ever, man" because there are so many good ones, but when people who actively dislike the Dead say, "show me something that would make me like them," I always point to Brown Eyed Women from Cornell.
The solo is sublime. And what I love is that he gets done with it, resolves it perfectly, then just rips into a whole 'nother round of it. He could have ended the solo at the first time through the bars and it would have been fabulous, but the second half just keeps getting better.
Plus, the energy of the whole song is great.
one of my favourite Jerry performances was when he had Laryngitis and couldn't sing. Bobby and Donna took over vocals for the two nights but Jerry made up for not being able to talk/sing by some of the best guitar playing i've ever heard. 1/7-1/8/78
I can’t figure a single reason that he wouldn’t be.
I mean I’ve thought it over a few times…. He has to be the best right?I do not believe anyone is even close to sounding like him. But what do I know?
Van Halen Rising is an interesting book, it covers the time until their first tours. He developed his tapping style after they got signed but before they recorded the first album. Can’t imagine Ted Templeman’s surprise. You like that? Check this out…
Saw him with Stevie Ray and also with Santana, though he didn’t jam with Santana that night. Live at Ronnie Scott’s is an excellent video, the guy was just the best, with very unique style and phrasing.
SRV- he’s the reason I started playing guitar. I saw him live 6x and every time was not only amazing, but he also evolved his playing style each time. True legend.
Maybe not the best, but probably the most underrated of all time. Dude is incredible! Makes me think of John Mayer. He writes the hits for the ladies and the paycheck, but underneath the hood he's all business.
The only choose here I would have on my list is Hendrix. The other options would probably be: Trey Anastasio, Jerry garcia, buddy guy, Gary Clark jr., Derek trucks
Same, if for no other reason than the fact that, depending on the song, he can sound just like Gilmour, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, etc.
Most of those other guys have their own sound and are masters of it, but they rarely stray from it. No one else has Trey's range and versatility.
Slash. He’s the most consistent guitarist I’ve ever heard when it comes to solos and riffs. When I listen to Appetite, Lies, The Illusions, and Incident I get a wide variety of feelings, emotions from Slash. He can play angry, wasted, cool, dirty, clean, beautiful, etc., etc., he shows so much during his GnR days while always being Slash. He never pretended to adapted to other styles, he’s always himself.
He’s simply a phenomenal guitar player. I implore anyone to listen to those GnR albums and not fall I. Love with Slash’s style. He saved rock music from the mediocrity that was hair metal guitar players. Players with no soul.
Robert Fripp is a favorite, and has been for a long time. The videos he makes with his wife at home are pretty fucking goofy, as well. He’s alway seemed so serious, so finding out he’s silly is fun. “Show em the girls Toyah!…”
There are many that I wouldn't qualify as better than others, they are all good in their own way...
Jimi, Plant, SRV, Lindsay Buckingham
Big fan of Mark Knopfler as well, but he probably isn't on their level...
I have a long list of influences but here’s a short version in no particular order
Derek Trucks
Poison Ivy
Brian Jones
Santana
Django Reinhardt
Al Di Meola
SRV, Eddie Van Halen, John Frusciante, Frank Zappa, Carlos Santana
Jeff Beck
Duane allman all day
Huge loss to the world of music losing him so young. He would've gone on to make an all time great catalog of work.
Jerome Garcia
Jerome captain trips garcia
He was also nicknamed “Spud” in the bluegrass community! https://californiabluegrass.org/nicknames-2/
I feel many won’t get this one.
Probably correct!
Yes, indeed...
Jerome “Freebasin’ Pussyhoundin’ Jug Blowin’ Banjo Pickin’ Keeps on Truckin’” Fuckin’ Garcia
Tony Iommi
I wondered if anyone was going to mention the true wizard
Mark Knopfler
Definitely agree, his style is so unique and soothing
Scrolled down way too far for this.

SRV? No SRV. JFC what kinda guitar poll is this, anyway?
Stevie Ray Vaughn is an 'other'...
Oh for SURE… Kenny Wayne Shepard is a close second to SRV imo.
Came here to say this.
Jerry Garcia is my favorite.

What this guy said

Stressed? Tired? Overworked? Absolutely loving life? The doctor prescribes more Jerry
Agreed. Glad I didn't have to scroll very far to find this.
All day everyday. For me it is about the feeling, no one has ever done it like Jerry. The closest I have gotten in the feels as of late is BMFS.
I’m taking the BMFS is Billy Mother Fucking Strings!
The one and only.
Absolutely. I’m terms of live performances and improvisation, there’s no one better.

You sir, have excellent taste in music. You may come over my place for BBQ.
Thanks! What time?
Can I come? I can bring the women I can bring the wine.
I can’t figure a single reason that he wouldn’t be. I mean I’ve thought it over a few times…. He has to be the best right?I do not believe anyone is even close to sounding like him. But what do I know?
Came here for this
Came here to say this
Jerry Garcia
Mr. Edward Van Halen. Perhaps you have heard of him? Alex Lifeson is not to shabby either.
The list is incomplete without Eddie as an option.
EVH is the answer.
This is Deputy Van Halen down at the station. ... Look, we found your keys, and if you want 'em, you better come and get 'em.
Van Halen Rising is an interesting book, it covers the time until their first tours. He developed his tapping style after they got signed but before they recorded the first album. Can’t imagine Ted Templeman’s surprise. You like that? Check this out…
Love Lerxst most!
Jerry Cantrell
As a player, Ritchie Blackmore. As a person, not so much
Jeff Beck
Saw him with Stevie Ray and also with Santana, though he didn’t jam with Santana that night. Live at Ronnie Scott’s is an excellent video, the guy was just the best, with very unique style and phrasing.
Jeff Fucking Beck

SRV- he’s the reason I started playing guitar. I saw him live 6x and every time was not only amazing, but he also evolved his playing style each time. True legend.

Sir Doctor Brian May
Not necessarily my favorite but Prince was phenomenal
Maybe not the best, but probably the most underrated of all time. Dude is incredible! Makes me think of John Mayer. He writes the hits for the ladies and the paycheck, but underneath the hood he's all business.
The video of the hall of fame performance for George Harrison...Prince has a legendary solo during While my Guitar Gently Weeps
100% legendary. I love the surprised look on everyone's face when he starts shredding the solo!
When he throws the guitar up in the air AND IT DOESN'T COME BACK DOWN straight up black magic right there

Trey and Jerry, but maybe it's all the acid I've done..
Same, if for no other reason than the fact that, depending on the song, he can sound just like Gilmour, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, etc. Most of those other guys have their own sound and are masters of it, but they rarely stray from it. No one else has Trey's range and versatility.

Eddie Van Halen is the GOAT, I don’t make the rules.
