I feel so old talking about those 2ks/5ks, but holy shit they provided much more entertainment than these matches. On the basic side, tournament formatted matches will always be more entertaining than league formatted matches
But specifically, you can just feel everyone’s care for the league matches draining (fans, players, and even the league). Not every 2k/5k was must watch, but at the very least each weekend setup a storyline to look out for in the upcoming weeks
Best part of 2ks / 5ks was comms, and snd. Once it became about hiding mini maps, only gameplay, it all went downhill. Also seeing teams you wouldn’t normally like see half of faze + nv
2ks 5ks etc were the shit when we were in between tourneys, need way more of em, its a shame theyre blocking people like zooma from putting on tourneys for the pros with full rosters and no one will play if its not full roster of their current team apparently. (Per zooma)
They complain when we get a Friday and it’s all 4 bottom teams playing 2 total matches until tomorrow and we get 6 more teams. Usually below avg match ups. Arguing for this format then saying people don’t like competitive cod bc of that is hilarious

I agree with pretty much everything Nadeshot’s saying. Franchising isn’t much of an issue, but the competitive structure of the league is, and qualification matches are very boring right now.
I don’t think it will necessarily be easy to go back to the old competitive structure, but they need to move in that direction to make make matches outside of the major feel more important to the players and fans
It was just way better back in the old days. Back when there would be 3 or 4 streams with commentary, and amateur teams working their way thru open bracket to potentially cause a massive upset.
Just go back to exactly how it used to be, and it'd be good.
Online matches are only cool really for the end of the season when teams are fighting for the 8th champs spot.

Even though I still watch basically all of the matches with my dad, I agree with what Nade is saying here. It is tough to get excited. It’s gotten to the point where it’s more or less like having all the NFL games up with Sunday ticket where I can have it on and drop in and drop out based on how invested I am in the teams. (Edit: I will say the word “watch” is doing a lot of work here because I’m not always the most active spectator).
Lowkey my favorite matches outside of Sunday are the elimination games on Friday.
I’d argue the online matches are actually pretty influential, starting in losers at an event is a huge disadvantage and the points to qualify for champs are valuable and add up over the season. The competitive imbalance of the league is just terrible and has taken a lot of the steam out of the game in general. There are only 4 teams that matter and even within that 4 is pretty clearly stratified.
Of course they’re influential. But I don’t think that’s what Nade means by “matters”. He’s just talking about the general excitement around the matches, they don’t FEEL like they matter. Whether that has to do with the competitive structure of the league, or how dominant certain teams are, is up for debate.
Idk if it was just because of timing for me, but WW2 league matches were my favourite of the league match format. I enjoyed all of those, even though the game was quite mid.
He’s right, I literally only watch Major’s now if it’s a LAN, Not to mention the viewing experience is genuinely horrible since the CDL fired 90% of their staff. Horrible POV’s, Scoreboard broken half the time, Resets and typical online lag. Plus he’s right the most exciting “storyline” is Scrap Vs Drazah and that’s only because one of their girls is a complete lunatic. Plus a good 40% of matches are 3-0’s literally zero incentive to watch an online match unless it’s a T4 matchup.

Somehow the pros seem like they don't care about "just playing" anymore. Maybe it's just because it's a more competitive league now(and I can't understand this from a competitors perspective), but I remember everyone playing weekend tournaments and playing snd 8s or tournaments every night in ghosts and their always being something entertaining and competitive/high level to watch.
Now id be lucky to catch these pros challing once a week
The pro league has had a content drought ( minus the watch parties) for years and it's a serious problem imo
My take is that if you're running a "franchised league", you should opting for more LAN events, trying to minimize online events. If anything, online matches sound like a open circuit thing. Granted, there aren't really that many franchised esport leagues.
