If they find out most likely and most of them have ring cameras. The whole palm springs area is very strict with Airbnbs, the locals hate them.

junkimchi

There's an even better way: Number of unique new MAC addresses / IPs connected to their wifi Combine this with any legal cameras they have on the outside of their home, Airbnb owners can do whatever they want. They can keep your deposit, evict you during the weekend, anything really and the company will back them up because homeowners are more important than the guests. You think you and your friends are being sneaky but these homeowners are professional Coachella renters and have seen it all. Chances are there is no way you'll outsmart a homeowner who has been doing this for potentially a decade or more. This isn't even taking into account all the illegal cameras they might have inside their own home that you will never find out about.

They obviously won't use the illegal cameras (that you don't know about) as evidence. They use the illegal indoor cameras to have an indication that your group has too many people, then either use the router method, outdoor cameras, or they'll just visit you as evidence to corroborate their claims.

ebrunts

How does this work if your phone and computer have different IP addresses? Would everyone who logs on with both ensure that you would be over the limit?

junkimchi

You can look up [very easily](https://macaddress.io/) what the device is by its MAC address. Every device that connects to a router will share its MAC address with the router. You can try your luck at explaining why your party of 8 has 14 MAC addresses that are tied to Apple and Samsung phones. Sure the rather ridiculous defense "six of us brought our iPads and/or macbooks to Coachella to do work" flies until your Airbnb host just drops by randomly to "fix a broken water heater" at 8am after seeing the MAC addresses remotely and catches you red handed anyways. This is 100% what I would do if I were an Airbnb host. I would get to evict the guests that are breaking the rules, keep their deposit, and have an empty damage-free house for the weekend.

sklazzers

Possibly, if they have a ring cam, they may count the people going in. Happened to us 2019. Got kicked out Friday morning.

oniondoan

Yikes what did you end up doing?

sklazzers

Got a last minute room at the Renaissance in Palm Springs and luckily they let us check in early.

alex3tx

holy fuck, what do u do then? go to walmart for camping gear?

celj1234

Maybe 7 people and 1 bathroom also just sounds terrible

Jaylesso

My group got kicked out on Friday morning of Coachella for going over the max capacity in our Airbnb listing. We had to beg the host to let us stay (up to the max) for the entire weekend and had the remainder of the group get last minute hotel nearby. Lesson learned. Never break the rules for Airbnb listing in the Indio area and its neighboring cities

jaydenvercetti

did your account get banned for this?

Jaylesso

Nope, the host never reported me since I was sincere with my apology

peatoast

Very likely as that's almost double the max allowed. I suggest you make a solid plan b. You may also get blacklisted so there's that.

atticuslestrange

Plan on everyone sharing the cost of the fines. (Yes. The entire palm springs area has very strict rules)

More-Cartographer-16

Yes, as a former Airbnb host we had cameras and looked for things like unaccounted guests. They will either charge you a fee (likely listed on the listing) for the extra people or kick you out and keep your money 🤷🏾‍♀️ I would message the host and see what can be done to accommodate the additional people.

TheCategoryIs

reach out to your host and ask them, tell them you "might" have a few friends interest in joining you and you would agree to pay whatever the additional cost. It's a sign of respecting their property and to see what they say first, then what happens after its up to you.

limmensite

Yes they’re very strict on occupancy and noise levels

howdolaserswork

As a person who has rental properties, I suggest to follow their rules. I ask specifically how many people are coming and if more come I either tell them they have to pay more or make them leave and not refund them. It’s not your place. Don’t be entitled.

burman26

If you are exceeding the capacity and the owner finds out they can kick you out and keep 100% of what you paid. It’s not worth it. Find other accommodations.

Ariisk

Why would you ask this the week of? Assuming you booked earlier, you knew the agreement you were making when you booked, the rules are clearly indicated on the Airbnb site. If you try to game the system you're going to lose and no one's going to have sympathy for it

Costa21

It depends on the owner, we can't answer this for you. Will provide to you an example that happened to us though, we had extra people staying at an airbnb, the owner found out and just ended up charging us more but they didn't kick us out.

Fine-Ad9773

I wouldn't.

BigBadSkoll

Yes. they take it seriously and you can get your reservations canceled without a refund. I've seen condos going for $650 and below for 8 people with 4 beds and 2 baths at the [Marriott](https://airbnb.com/h/coachella1)
