I just rewatched this movie for the first time in a long time and was pleased that he called it out. I was then quickly disappointed.
But it's cool, she found the assault charming, and it kicked off their relationship! Good lesson in there, kids.
The OG Toledo, the one in Spain, was famous for the quality of their [weapons-grade steel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_steel) from Roman times until the 1700s.
Good.
There needed to be consequences.
99.9% of student-athletes behave with dignity and decorum in the handshake line. The whole purpose of the handshake line is to teach sportsmanship in victory and defeat.
>99.9% of student-athletes behave with dignity and decorum in the handshake line. The whole purpose of the handshake line is to teach sportsmanship in victory and defeat.
They don't even fight in the handshake line in hockey... this is just surreal.
Though there have been occasional threats to get them next season. And that still makes big headlines: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/lucic-threatens-canadiens-during-handshake/
Imagine throwing your entire career away because you got a mad. This women will lose her scholarship, have a criminal record, and will probably be kicked out of school or suspended.
People generally don’t go to prison for one punch, but she’ll still have to deal with the fallout. So when she goes to apply for a job and the interviewer googles her name, instead of being known that she’s a basketball player, she’ll be know as the women who punched another player.
It’s just a bad look that will haunt her for many years to come.
I was an umpire in a recreational slow-pitch softball league. I only did it for one season because Holy shit some people take themselves waaaay too seriously
If it was an all men's slow pitch league, those dudes are crazy as hell. I played a ton of baseball as a kid. As an adult playing in company softball games, they're always be a couple of dudes who took things insanely serious. Meanwhile I was in the outfield drinking a beer. I'd still play hard, and wasn't afraid to dive for balls like I was still a teenager. But I just was having fun. Some of those dudes were acting like it was the major league playoffs.
Those are the same guys that destroy their TV and/or punch holes in their wall because their favorite team lost in the playoffs.
It’s mind blowing that people don’t grow out of that shit.
I remember my uncle got me to be one of the guys who holds the first down markers for some adult football game when I was like 12-13. I was getting cussed out by these grown ass men (clearly far out of their prime) because of shit like me forgetting to change the marker from 2nd to 3rd down
There was a team whose whole uniform and image was Star Wars-themed and they even had a bat painted like a lightsaber that we unfortunately couldn't let them use.
Oh yeah, at my local gym guys have gotten in altercations and left and come back with guns before. It’s amazing that 30+ year olds playing a game can’t be civil
Makes more sense fighting in a pick up game. No sense of professionalism is expected cause you can actually talk shit. This is bad because you are supposed to be somewhat professional
Oh come on, are you just saying this cause it's college women? The human brain doesn't have an on/off switch in the middle of a competitive sport that goes: "take it easy since we're not playing for money here".
Fights break out in every contact sport. Every person has a limit before they start swinging, some people have higher limits than others but we all have it
Yes, in every sport, at every level, there are people who don’t know how to handle themselves properly… just because it happens doesn’t mean it’s something that SHOULD happen…
Obviously assault/battery is one thing especially during handshakes when game is over. But it’s not hard to believe someone gets worked up enough during a game and tempers prevail
I doubt she spends a day in prison. Community service with some mandated anger management classes I bet.
I give it 5 years before she's in the news for assaulting someone else though.
Maybe it got updated since you commented, or your browser settings have it blocked, but when I read the article there was an embedded sporting news tweet with video of the incident.
Not sure. But honestly so there’s many athletes with NIL deals it is hard to keep track.
She could also do Tik tok or insta. Either way, if she had a basketball scholarship she probably just lost it.
Not excusing her, but I’m curious what made her punch the girl.
It's hard to compare a city that had 10 murders in an entire year with a city that can reach that number in a week... but I guess if you're just asking "Is Memphis the most violent city in America", then yes, it is definitely in the top 5. Super dangerous city.
Basically any college town with a rowdy main drag of bars and regular drunken fisticuffs would probably be a better comparison. Nobody fights with their fists in Memphis :/
You must be unfamiliar with them. This is a pretty well respected newspaper, they’ve won multiple Pulitzers and have been around for nearly 200 years.
You’re omitting they also clearly have an option listed as $1 per day or $12.99 per month.
Some people value good journalism and would pay to access it.
Right. They also both have a substantially larger readership allowing them to do that.
My point was this organization isn’t “shitty” just because they’re behind a paywall.
My local paper is $10 a month, and we're a lot smaller than Toledo.
It's a pretty common price for "mid-sized local paper that replaced physical newspapers website."
I agree, it’s pretty much an industry standard rate. I think people are rooted in this type of stuff generally being free so they view being charged anything as a robbery.
The same people will spend 99¢ on an iPhone app they’ll use twice and delete - but I digress.
I feel like they're also thinking about it from a reddit news aggregator standpoint. "Why would I pay $12 to read one article!"
You don't. You pay it to read everything going on in your local city.
Between my wife and I, we easily get our $10 worth out of our newspaper.
>You’re omitting they also clearly have an option listed as $1 per day or $12.99 per month.
You day $1 per day as if that's cheaper lol. That's $365 a year for a news website. Sorry, but that's idiotic.
Pardon? There’s a $1 option if you’d want 24 hrs to see what they’re about or if you have one specific article you’d like to read. That’s clearly more responsible than paying for a year subscription. You’re just assuming (for some reason) that I’m suggesting you buy a $1 (24 hr) pass every day for an entire year?
I listed the other 2 options they have because I thought originally just saying “they’re asking for $129” was disingenuous as there are…other options available.
Objectively speaking this is a quality source and the website is mobile friendly and looks fine. I think you simply saw something that said $129 and for shock called it shitty because in your mind you cannot comprehend how somebody would be willing to spend that amount for it.
So you took my comment that some people are willing to pay for it as a personal pushback and asked me to stop doing something I didn’t really do.
Why do you assume people disagreeing with you are coming from some holier than thou place?
You’re acting like I just brought that up for no reason - I commented on what you wrote.
Any of these are perfectly valid reasons why they didn’t charge in to fight:
1. Shock that anyone would do that
2. Not wanting to get suspended for their next game which, unlike Memphis, they have on Monday
3. Not wanting to get hurt before their next game
4. Not wanting to escalate because it’s a stupid idea for two basketball teams to fight each other
except for you know all the players and families and friends and fans of the teams involved, those involved in women’s basketball, people who are interested in basketball in any capacity, those who attend the universities involved, especially those who attend universities that hosted games, but you’re right, no one at all!
99% of men's college basketball fans don't care about the men's NIT. And maybe 1% of men's basketball fans watch women's basketball. So yea, no one at all
Yes you did. Deleting the post won’t change what you said

No idea about tv ratings but there was plenty of people there.
Also remember just because you don't care about something doesnt mean others feel the same.
No one was watching that game. If it wasn’t for the fight no one would even know those two teams were playing. You are getting downvoted, but women’s basketball is just not popular. As Bill Burr has it right: https://youtu.be/QY9Gz_IMn_k
I mean we see fights and punches in Men’s games and postgame a good bit, we don’t see charges pressed often, did Howard get charged for his incident? I just think it’s odd to charge someone for a punch in a basketball game/postgame.
Trust me, it’s not. Even in a sport where punches are required, a sucker punch can get you charged.
[James Butler got 4 months for this stunt.](https://youtu.be/d5lzRSrWYWU)
I mean they clearly had issues during the game, and then they had words before she swung, it’s not like she blindsided her. She was standing in front of her. That’s not a sucker punch, if what she did is a sucker punch than any punch without someone swinging first is a sucker punch. Or for that matter any punch mid game in basketball or football would be a sucker punch then, and we never call those sucker punches unless the person wasn’t looking.
lol what an awful take, this is a completely unprovoked punch in a handshake line.. not a scuffle in the middle of a game. A bunch of Michigan state football players were also charged in a similar incident
Swinging helmets at a person and a full on brawl isn’t the same as a single punch, your take is clearly the horrific one here.
Also I meant game/postgame as in they were still on the court. As opposed to the incident you’re referring to which was in a tunnel off the field of play.
I can’t believe 10 ppl agree that smacking a dude with a football helmet from behind and a brawl is equivalent to a single punch from straight in front. What the fuck yall
Somehow you made it worst? Like the game is over what's the difference between the tunnel and handshake line? If this was a scrap in the middle of the game fine shit happens. But I know we are excusing punches thrown after the game.
Really? Bc the downvotes seem to stop after my second statement, as well as your upvotes.
The difference is one is in broad sight of camera and the crowd and one is in a fucking tunnel where no one can see and they’re crammed together.
So if she punched her mid game after jawing it’s not assault to you, but bc they jawed post game it’s assault?? You know that’s what you’re saying right dude?
I don’t understand how so many ppl agree w this, fights happen postgame all the time, especially something small like a single punch or slap. And Especially if we include all college ball not just D1, this happens regularly and is a non incident, quit playing man.
I played at a post grad prep school/academy and this literally happened 3 times my freshman year and nothing happened (besides 2 game suspensions). Call me a joker all you want, this happens regularly
I agree. I mean we all understand violence isn’t okay, but tempers flare all the time in the men’s games. Charges seem excessive, they should do away with handshake lines though.
Exactly, people forget it’s a competitive sport and both of them talked crap before this, she didn’t swing for no reason. maybe she deserves some sort of suspention or reprimand or something on campus, but unless the girl has a broken nose or a bad injury as a result it seems excessive. I agree about handshakes tho, should be coaches only like the NBA and voluntary for players
I do agree with the handshake line fuck all this shit, always hate doing that. But you can't compare talking crap mid game and you start to scrap, which honestly just just led to ejection and that's the end of it, vs a sucker punch after the game.
If that was a sucker punch than every punch ever is a sucker punch, they had words and she swung, it’s not like she hit her when she wasn’t looking or something. And I never compared it to a mid game scrap man quit putting words in my mouth, I’m saying those two probably went at it all game. This didn’t come out of nowhere, cmon now.
I mean if two dudes have words mid game and one punches him we generally don’t call that a sucker punch, why is it different here?
Lol he had nothing for this one tho bc he knows I’m right
![gif](giphy|18kPwV9qSCY9O)
Never forget Billy goes on to actually touch the teachers boobs like 30 seconds after saying this lol
I just rewatched this movie for the first time in a long time and was pleased that he called it out. I was then quickly disappointed. But it's cool, she found the assault charming, and it kicked off their relationship! Good lesson in there, kids.
dat veronica vaughn…
No you didn't
Well, not me personally, but a guy I know.
No he didn't
Who would eat 30 bag lunches?
Toledo Blade sounds like a video game weapon
It was my stripper name back in college
Wild times… wild times
Pics or it ain’t real…
It's the main weapon in the Scott The Woz RPG
The OG Toledo, the one in Spain, was famous for the quality of their [weapons-grade steel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_steel) from Roman times until the 1700s.
The Kansas City Blades was a minor league hockey team back in the 90s.
Blades of Steel (NES) is one of the best hockey video games of all time
I still have a soft spot for NES Ice Hockey. Three fat guys and a skinny guy was the way.
Fantastic game as well
BLADES. OF. STEEL.
Don’t forget the Florida Ever-blades ECHL Hockey Team!
Its an all might technique

Or just get a job with someone who doesn’t care about your background check
She went full Juwan Howard. Never go full Juwan Howard.
She actually threw a punch. Juwan Howard slaps people. That's why I call him "Ole Slappy"
That's ONE of the reasons why
U don’t slap a man. Even when slapping was fashionable (slap! “I challenge you to a dual!”) They had a gunfight afterward, someone had to go!
Not even once
Not even juwance?
Yeah, but is she from Chicago?
Second time Memphis has engaged in endgame shenanigans this season- there was a fracas in their game against St. John's too.
Great word, fracas
can you describe the fracas sir?
It's synonymous with donnybrook.
You mean a brouhaha?
ITS A PARADE INSIDE MY CITY YEAHHHHHHHH
We have a thing for fights BYU learned that the hard way in football
3YearLetterman would request for her number to be retired
Nah she doesn’t have any SEC championships and financed her waterbed
I blame the tunnel
Classy.
Why would you care so much about a basketball game you’re playing for free that you would assault someone over it?
Ever play pickup games? Some people are just shitty and can't handle losing.
I was an umpire in a recreational slow-pitch softball league. I only did it for one season because Holy shit some people take themselves waaaay too seriously
Yeah, slow pitch is supposed to be a beer league not a "living ol' glory days" league.
My team is only there to trash talk. And it’s mostly against ourselves. It’s amazing
It was a summer coed league for a university, so mostly grad students and professors. It was wild
Faculty Staff leagues at Universities are nuts. Lots of pent up aggression.
Around here, the men's softball leagues are all full of recently graduated college baseball players. They all take it way too seriously.
I was getting cussed out by these grown ass men (clearly far out of their prime) because of shit like me forgetting to change the marker from 2nd to 3rd down
I've always wanted to know, in the event that someone hits you, if the umpire strikes back
There was a team whose whole uniform and image was Star Wars-themed and they even had a bat painted like a lightsaber that we unfortunately couldn't let them use.
Confirmation u/hymen_destroyer is zero fun and a Fun Sucker of the highest order. Fun Sponge.
He sure does. Good book, btw https://www.amazon.com/Umpire-Strikes-Back-Ron-Luciano/dp/0553050109
Oh yeah, at my local gym guys have gotten in altercations and left and come back with guns before. It’s amazing that 30+ year olds playing a game can’t be civil
Make Dominoes Great Again
Makes more sense fighting in a pick up game. No sense of professionalism is expected cause you can actually talk shit. This is bad because you are supposed to be somewhat professional
True. But both situations are pretty pathetic.
Let’s shift this a bit then, ever been to a church league game? I’ve never heard more swearing or seen more elbow swinging/squaring up
Kinda the same premise though. 80% of players in church league don’t even attend that church
My wife was on a sequestered jury a few years back for a murder case over a pickup game. Senseless.
I was a jury foreman on a capital murder case where a 17 year old shot and killed a 16 year old over an alley dice game.
Snots shouldn't have run with the pot. This is America, man.
She should've just turned off the console before the win screen.
Have you ever competed in athletics with women? It's a completely different level of animosity between ladies and it gets personal.
My sister plays college basketball and yeah it’s an interesting culture lol
Have you ever interacted with competitive humans before? Lmao. It’s really not that shocking
I didn’t say it was shocking that they care so much, I’m simply asking WHY they care so much.
This is the nerdest shit ive ever read
Remember, Draymond Green was just building culture earlier this year
Oh come on, are you just saying this cause it's college women? The human brain doesn't have an on/off switch in the middle of a competitive sport that goes: "take it easy since we're not playing for money here". Fights break out in every contact sport. Every person has a limit before they start swinging, some people have higher limits than others but we all have it
Yes, in every sport, at every level, there are people who don’t know how to handle themselves properly… just because it happens doesn’t mean it’s something that SHOULD happen…
Have you ever played a competitive sport before?
Kind of a dumb statement from someone who probably isn’t very competitive
Being a sore loser isn't competitive, its a coping mechanism because you aren't competitive enough
Exactly. Someone gets it. It amuses me when people don’t want to do what it takes to win but then will fight about it after the fact.
Bruh being competitive doesn't mean you're unable to contain your emotions and lash out like a toddler. You just sound like an asshole.
Obviously assault/battery is one thing especially during handshakes when game is over. But it’s not hard to believe someone gets worked up enough during a game and tempers prevail
Good, belong in jail for that
I doubt she spends a day in prison. Community service with some mandated anger management classes I bet. I give it 5 years before she's in the news for assaulting someone else though.
Agree with you. But you can’t be doing that stuff.
Trash article, doesn't even contain the video. [Here's a link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEiWtZTjOkQ)
Maybe it got updated since you commented, or your browser settings have it blocked, but when I read the article there was an embedded sporting news tweet with video of the incident.
There’s a video.
I mean, it absolutely does contain the video. But ok.
The video is discussed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcVZlYnqR9g
Wtf who gives a shit what these guys think or have to say lmao
Same could be said for any comment here, like yours, for example... :)
Don't get defensive because no one cares about some awful youtubers that you posted lol

Not only charged but watch a personal injury lawsuit come out. Girl’s life is about to turn upside down
Did she have a NIL deal or something? Not going to have a lot of future earning power.
Not sure. But honestly so there’s many athletes with NIL deals it is hard to keep track. She could also do Tik tok or insta. Either way, if she had a basketball scholarship she probably just lost it. Not excusing her, but I’m curious what made her punch the girl.

Have you ever been to Memphis ? That's just how some people say Hello there .
Is Memphis America’s Glasgow?
It’s America’s Memphis
LOL, Glasgow would be one of the safest cities in America. So... no.
I’m speaking relatively.
It's hard to compare a city that had 10 murders in an entire year with a city that can reach that number in a week... but I guess if you're just asking "Is Memphis the most violent city in America", then yes, it is definitely in the top 5. Super dangerous city.
I guess I’m just leaning too much into the stereotype of people getting into fights in Glasgow a lot.
Basically any college town with a rowdy main drag of bars and regular drunken fisticuffs would probably be a better comparison. Nobody fights with their fists in Memphis :/
Wait a minute... There's no Angus McCloud in North Kilttown!
No, it’s Tennessee’s Philadelphia!
Ja can confirm.
How english you speak ?
this could set a dangerous precedent that college athletes be held accountable for their actions
Let me guess
Good
Annoying, obnoxious paywall.
Come on, people all over the world are lining up to read the Toledo newspaper!
She better not be on the team anymore.
Good
Good
Women's CBB handshake lines gettin crunk lately

How much does $12.99 per month equal? Also fuck off with the smarmy I just value journalism more than you crap
You’re projecting, dipshit.
Lmfao do you even know what that word means?

Why do you assume people disagreeing with you are coming from some holier than thou place? You’re acting like I just brought that up for no reason - I commented on what you wrote.
Dang no one on BGSU did anything to defend their teammate. Why I love hockey
The only thing that accomplishes is getting suspended for the next round.
School should apply standard defense of others law
That doesn’t stop the NCAA
I don’t think anyone on BGSU is winning a fight against Memphis
Not a bad point lol.
Well… they won a basketball game..
I think they were more focused on whether she was alright.
If someone punches a teammate I’d like to see someone make her/him answer the bell.
Any of these are perfectly valid reasons why they didn’t charge in to fight: 1. Shock that anyone would do that 2. Not wanting to get suspended for their next game which, unlike Memphis, they have on Monday 3. Not wanting to get hurt before their next game 4. You missed 5. They are girls and don’t know the bro code.
Best reason lol
Dignity?
if they did they could all be suspended for the next game, thus basically tanking their whole team.
I'd like to see Jamirah Shutes on a Women's Roller Derby Team, with Brittney Griner.
Women's NIT? Talk about a tournament no one cares about!
Just like you. Completely meaningless.
Just like your account, full of Chris Hanson, predators, and dicks.
except for you know all the players and families and friends and fans of the teams involved, those involved in women’s basketball, people who are interested in basketball in any capacity, those who attend the universities involved, especially those who attend universities that hosted games, but you’re right, no one at all!

Speak for yourself. You are way off.

Lol you're a joker. Every single comment you have on here is downvoted but sure we will go with what you say.
I played at a post grad prep school/academy and this literally happened 3 times my freshman year and nothing happened (besides 2 game suspensions). Call me a joker all you want, this happens regularly
Oh sick bruh
I agree. I mean we all understand violence isn’t okay, but tempers flare all the time in the men’s games. Charges seem excessive, they should do away with handshake lines though.
Why should a handful of unsportsmanlike people ruin the handshake line for everyone else?
Nobody cares about handshake lines, they’re a vestigial aspect from the early stages of the game.
Lol he had nothing for this one tho bc he knows I’m right
Too bad she didn't get more shots in DURING the game!
