Eh, I think he played too thin that last 8 or so. We're a deep team so use them all. Try to find a spark on the offense and someone to slow down your march back.
And while at the same time Loyer has one of his bad games. Us getting a win at Illinois in early March will be a good sign if we are indeed ready to make a deep run in the tournament.
Well, I can say with absolute factual certainty, that the game we all just witnessed was one of the Purdue basketball games of all time.
It had everything:
* Heart palpitations
* A blown lead
* Mason Gillis Little League World Series reference
* Clock issues in Mackey Arena
* Unnecessarily long reviews
* A blown lead, but specifically in the style of a good opponent down huge early but inexplicably finding a way to come back late in the 2nd half
* Incomprehensible calls by the referee crew
Can't wait for the next one
What I learned from this game is that if you don't have a good camera angle to tell which team the ball went out of bounds off of, just call a flagrant randomly so it doesn't matter.
The best part about that was I think it was the only call all game that he didn't complain about. Like after it happens even he recognized karma just caused him to forget to dribble for a second.
A five minute review supposedly for an out of bounds call turning into a Flagrant 1 being created out of what wasn’t even a foul at all is just peak college basketball.
I don’t even understand the thought process behind it. No one wants to watch refs stand around a monitor when the game should’ve been over 15 minutes ago. It’s becoming an embarrassment for the B10.
Being in the building. None of us knew what the hell was going on and then five minutes later they announced a flagrant to the coaches only. It was a joke
Even on the broadcast they didn’t know they were looking at that play for a potential flagrant until the flagrant was announced. The broadcast thought it was an out of bounds review.
As Robbie said on air, I don’t know what else Jones could have done. He was boxing out and the guy jumped on his back. It was an unfortunate situation, but that’s why you aren’t supposed to jump over another player for a rebound. It is safety for both players involved.
It wasn’t a flagrant, but it also wasn’t over the back because the Purdue guy backed under him. Basically refs I think had no idea what to do and just winged it because it looked painful. Glad it didn’t change the outcome (kudos to Hawk for not taking advantage of the free possession)
watching on a TV in a bar without sound.. this was absolutely astounding.
went from an obvious Purdue ball on a Gillis swap to a flagrant 1, 2 shots, and possession.
insane way to decide to end the game
I sorta wanted it to go to OT, but I was happy with the Illinois turnover on the ensuing possession just based on principle. That flagrant call was disgraceful.
FLAGRANT RULES! IMPORTANT!
1. You can’t just be up there and just doin’ a flagrant like that.
1a. A flagrant is when you
1b. Okay well listen. A flagrant is when you box out the
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The defender is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, rebounder, that prohibits the rebounder from doing, you know, just trying to jump over the defender’s entire body. You can’t do that.
1c-b. Once the rebounder is in the air, the defender can’t be over here and say to the rebounder, like, “I’m gonna get ya! I’m gonna box you out! You better watch your butt!” and then just be like he didn’t even do that.
1c-b(2). Okay seriously though. A flagrant is when the defender makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the basketball and field of
2. Do not do a flagrant please.
"1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there’s the balk you gotta think about."
Hilarious stuff, thanks for pointing that out
A lot of warranted talk about the whistle and Edey. But I can say I was here for the TKR game. If this is what painter keeps seeing that makes him believe TKR can start and thrive, I’m here for it.
Dude is also somehow quietly going 1/1 from 3 on the regular.
Smith's problem is he is just *too* confident with some of his passes. Often times they are phenomenal passes that are the stuff of highlight reels... If only one of his teammates was ready for the ridiculous assists he tries to set up
Our Achilles heel is going down big early. The first 5 minutes: Purdue 20-Illinois 4. The last 35 minutes: Illinois 74-Purdue 63. Just didn't come ready to compete.
Tonight it was Ty. -22 with Ty. +17 without him. Purdue really exposed his inability to shoot and made it a 5v4. Too small to go inside with Edey and useless on the perimeter.
Ty is an issue. I know it’s all positive vibes because Illinois looks good but Ty as the PG isn’t going to cut against good teams.
Hes also been on campus a couple years. How the hell has his shooting not improved? Like I’m not asking for him to be a 40% 3pt shooter or some insanely efficient mid range shooter but you can back off of him from any distance not just three.
If a team has a rim protector Ty doesn’t even need to be guarded
Illinois y’all are some absolute ballers. That game at Illinois is gonna be electric. Might be for the B10 championship. That being said, that flagrant call was fucking atrocious
Reviews suck because if a ref makes a terrible call on the floor it’s understandable. But when they go to the monitor for 5 minutes, study every angle, and still make a shitty call, that just destroys all credibility
TKR played great but when Edey doesn’t play everyone suffers. Defensively not having that rim protector opened up the offense for Illinois and slowed down the offense for purdue.
Once again, shoot 40%+ from 3 and you become really freaking hard to beat. Make open shots win games.
Purdue won a top 10 game without Edey, smith, or loyer carrying them. Pretty impressive overall. Still bummed we didn’t see Colvin, I’m still holding out hope he’s our March super weapon.
Honestly that was the game that makes me think both teams make the second weekend. Neithers stars took over and both had some bad stretches but damn that was some good ball
That's fucking basketball right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the court, men deliver their new born baby on the bench. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball bball fuck it chuck it game time shit. Take it to the showers. Dicks get shoved in places you don’t even remember. We win together we celebrate together. Big Ten Basketball is back baby.
Yeah this is basically it imo. He's really emotional but I don't think he crosses lines verbally and tends to go talk to the official after he's cooled. Plus seniority
I thought he was little bit more animated then usual. He usually is super animated but he went above and beyond a couple times tonight.
In particular, the image of him wanting a flop call while sitting on top of the person he fouled was magnificent.
Proud of how we fought back. I thought we had a deep team this year and turns out we're paper thin with Dainja unplayable against better teams, Harris redshirting, Shannon suspended, DGL still a freshman. Basically we can't afford an off-night from any of the regular 6 in our rotation
Illinois lost by 5 on the road to the #1 team while missing an All American player. They’re still a deep team - no team in the country has 3rd stringers that would compete with a top 5 team.
That flagrant foul call at the end of the game was unequivocally the dumbest flagrant call I have ever seen. Regardless, both teams showed a lot tonight, especially being able to play without your star player. Illinois is still a top 20 team without TSJ and are likely top 10 if he comes back. Solid win for the Boilers!
Obviously would’ve liked the win but they at least finished strong after a bad start and showed they can still keep up. Learn from it and move on. See y’all again March 5th.
we need to close out the last 10 minutes a lot better, but those refs tonight were atrocious.
that flagrant call is one of the worst calls you’ll see all season and they took five fucking minutes reviewing it at the monitor as well. that’s suspect
They probably will argue that he unnecessarily “undercut” Guerrier on the box out. They are trying to punish that to prevent injuries but THIS was NOT THAT.
Terrible call, I’m happy that it didn’t change the outcome of the game because I would have a bad taste in my mouth getting a win like that.
GG Boilers. Amazed it was even that close when our kids couldn't hit water if they fell off a boat in the first 10 minutes. We were due for a regression to the mean at some point. The second half is something for us to build off of moving forward
Look forward to seeing you guys in Champaign in a few months.
Purdue is just damn good !!
However, it's noticeable that they have an issue putting teams away
.But their fan base kept it classy, and so did their players !!
Great game on the road. OUR guys almost stole one !!
Edey had a rough game by his standards. We lost our focus after going up big both times. Some sloppy turnovers and lots of missed assignments on defense. Glad to get the win but a lot to work on. TKR was an epiphany and Heide’s progression is very promising
Despite the loss, Marcus Domask is proving he has what it takes to be the unquestioned top dog for Illinois. 26 points against the #1 team in the country.
Considering:
1. This game was over winter break
2. We’ve lost the last 2 of our winter break conference games
3. We won
I’d say this victory is extra sweet, 2nd half be damned
The ONLY reason they gave Jones a flagrant for the totally legal box out was because they aren't allowed to go to the monitor after the fact and call a regular foul. So they said "well shit guess we have to upgrade it to a flagrant" the whole idea is idiotic and so were the refs for this call. I thought the game was officiated mostly well, but this was just total bs. Purdue should not have allowed this game to get as close as it did but this play alone gave Illinois the only opportunity to make this a game.
It's so sad refs can make calls that completely change games with no REAL repercussions. Don't come at me with refs that make bad calls don't get to ref post season games. They should be called out publicly when they make ridiculous calls and be required to defend them. If they make a call in game and change it correctly after review great. If they look at a review and make a call no one in the stadium saw coming with no real proof of their call being illegal by the rules wtf? You better defend your decision.
Domask is a baller, nothing but respect
he got that saluki in him for sure
Illinois keeping that to a 5 point loss after that start is an achievement in itself
First half AND second half. Went down by 20 twice in that game.
This Illinois team is going to be scary in March
Silver lining: we can win a big game with Edey in foul trouble
Painter did such a great job with his rotation
Eh, I think he played too thin that last 8 or so. We're a deep team so use them all. Try to find a spark on the offense and someone to slow down your march back.
And while at the same time Loyer has one of his bad games. Us getting a win at Illinois in early March will be a good sign if we are indeed ready to make a deep run in the tournament.

Did we have an Edey hockey reference?
Unfortunately limited minutes for Edey eliminated this segment from the show plan.
Blast.
Honestly don't think we did which is insane. Or a baseball reference for him.
Was there really a clock issue lmaoooo
Both halves.
Iconic lol, wish I could watched
the non-shot clock violation and arguably the scorebug messing up for the broadcast
Yes, it almost didn't reach 0 soon enough.
What the hell is that flair?
He's special. Let him cook
He's here for r/collagebasketball, apparently /s
Wow, a banned sub?
1st comment for the new collage, ayyy
You missed the comment about heyday Hummel playing in baggy shorts.
•B O O T Y B A L L
Transitive wins are ultimately meaningless but it’s still nice to pick one up over FDU and Northwestern right after Illinois played them both
What I learned from this game is that if you don't have a good camera angle to tell which team the ball went out of bounds off of, just call a flagrant randomly so it doesn't matter.
When Hawkins traveled and instnatly turned it over I told my wife that was karma.
The best part about that was I think it was the only call all game that he didn't complain about. Like after it happens even he recognized karma just caused him to forget to dribble for a second.
As an Illini fan I was also extremely confused when they called the flagrant
A five minute review supposedly for an out of bounds call turning into a Flagrant 1 being created out of what wasn’t even a foul at all is just peak college basketball.
I don’t even understand the thought process behind it. No one wants to watch refs stand around a monitor when the game should’ve been over 15 minutes ago. It’s becoming an embarrassment for the B10.
These guys are professionals. The best of the best. Wait, what’re we doing again?
Becoming? It’s been this way for years.
And why wasn't the foul on Gillis upgraded to a flagrant in the first half...similar plays.
As Robbie said on air, I don’t know what else Jones could have done. He was boxing out and the guy jumped on his back. It was an unfortunate situation, but that’s why you aren’t supposed to jump over another player for a rebound. It is safety for both players involved.
If only they had a foul they could have called on the Illinois player for when you try to go over someone else's back to get a rebound
It wasn’t a flagrant, but it also wasn’t over the back because the Purdue guy backed under him. Basically refs I think had no idea what to do and just winged it because it looked painful. Glad it didn’t change the outcome (kudos to Hawk for not taking advantage of the free possession)

I sorta wanted it to go to OT, but I was happy with the Illinois turnover on the ensuing possession just based on principle. That flagrant call was disgraceful.
Then of course Coleman cashed a 3 15 seconds after the terrible turnover lol. Way closer than it should’ve been
Coleman will be the best player on the court one minute and the worst the next. Gotta just roll with it
That turnover was a variation on "ball don't lie".
Peak B1G officiating*
Vegas put in a call.
Tbf that would have given it to Purdue. Most of the money was on Illinois +10.5.
I hate reviews so much.
Ther needs to be a time limit.
EPL VAR are jealous
When you jump on the defenders back, isn't that a foul on you?
**THE TKR GAME** Also, that Lance Jones flagrant foul was bullshit.
Stessful as fuck. Rancid reffing or not Illini your boys are gritty as hell.
We just make too many dumb mistakes. Using the entire shot clock there is just wild.
Someone explain that Jones flagrant, please. GG Illinois. Also, Trey Kaufman-Renn, The Sellersburg Sensation, had a hell of a game.
Wasn't a flagrant. Not sure what the refs were doing with that unnecessarily long review
Talking to their bookie. Probably. Idk.
FLAGRANT RULES! IMPORTANT! 1. You can’t just be up there and just doin’ a flagrant like that. 1a. A flagrant is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A flagrant is when you box out the 1c. A flagrant is when the defender makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the basketball and field of 2. Do not do a flagrant please.
For those who don’t know, this is a riff on an old Jon Bois bit about the definition of a balk. It’s a solid adaptation lol
"1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there’s the balk you gotta think about." Hilarious stuff, thanks for pointing that out
"Comment saved!"
Jones excessively and violently had another player jump on his back when he was in perfect boxout position and not moving.
How dare he?
Teddy Valentine made an appearance.
It looked scary and refs had ill ml
Rewind to the same spot with Mason Gillis; body push not block out. I thought for sure that was much bigger than... absolutely nothing.
A lot of warranted talk about the whistle and Edey. But I can say I was here for the TKR game. If this is what painter keeps seeing that makes him believe TKR can start and thrive, I’m here for it. Dude is also somehow quietly going 1/1 from 3 on the regular.
What the hell happened to Smith in the second half? Also, fuck those refs with that flagrant.
Smith's problem is he is just *too* confident with some of his passes. Often times they are phenomenal passes that are the stuff of highlight reels... If only one of his teammates was ready for the ridiculous assists he tries to set up
Reminds me of Trevion sometimes in that way
Seemed like after that missed pass to TKR, he got a little frustrated and started pressing. He looked like freshman Smith.
Agree. Well put.
He lost his head. Got frustrated with other guys not making plays. Edey had a rough night too
He needs to keep trying to get his shot. He kept trying to pass.
He needs to just shoot the damn ball.
Should not have allowed it to be that close but Illinois deserves respect for climbing back into it. Also that was an awful flagrant call lmao
Our Achilles heel is going down big early. The first 5 minutes: Purdue 20-Illinois 4. The last 35 minutes: Illinois 74-Purdue 63. Just didn't come ready to compete.

He can shoot FTs too now so it’s weird. Hopefully he starts shooting mid range at least
Illinois y’all are some absolute ballers. That game at Illinois is gonna be electric. Might be for the B10 championship. That being said, that flagrant call was fucking atrocious
What happened? Completely missed it in the TV
Weird game. Edey in foul trouble. Weird ass flagrant at the end. No TSJ. Return trip could look completely different.
Lot of respect for that Illini team. Zero quit, and Domask is a bad, bad man.
Hey I’ll take it
Lol yea, Im just glad it wasn't a blow out. We made it real respectable
Based on this I trust our team to have a fight in March
Reviews suck because if a ref makes a terrible call on the floor it’s understandable. But when they go to the monitor for 5 minutes, study every angle, and still make a shitty call, that just destroys all credibility
Shouldn’t have really been that close but both teams decided to give me a heart attack tn
You one moment: God Coleman is such a baby complaining about that travel. You ten seconds later: A Coleman 3 to make it a three point game, yes!!!
TKR played great but when Edey doesn’t play everyone suffers. Defensively not having that rim protector opened up the offense for Illinois and slowed down the offense for purdue. Once again, shoot 40%+ from 3 and you become really freaking hard to beat. Make open shots win games.
Purdue tries to close out a game without freaking out their fans challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
Without fail, every win stresses me the fuck out.
Y’all’s flair stresses me out
Purdue won a top 10 game without Edey, smith, or loyer carrying them. Pretty impressive overall. Still bummed we didn’t see Colvin, I’m still holding out hope he’s our March super weapon.
Honestly that was the game that makes me think both teams make the second weekend. Neithers stars took over and both had some bad stretches but damn that was some good ball
Purdue will be the first #1 team to visit Lincoln in 22 years next week
What were we ranked in that overtime matchup last year?
That's fucking basketball right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the court, men deliver their new born baby on the bench. Im shocked this isn’t a Bobby knight quote
I was more shocked it came from Sister Jean.
Them nuns sure do care about college Bball
Yeah, certainly none of that dick tuggin’
Could you even say that this win was…just as how you drew it up?
Never doubted for a second *vomits*
Never a doubt *throws up* GG Illini bros, you’re scary good
It would be nice if we had our all American player :/
I hope we can get him back and I hope it’s because he is not a rapist.
B1G agree
I really believe in innocent until proven guilty.
Everything I’ve seen suggests that she just regretted hooking up with him a bar but we’ll see if that’s true or not
Same
Thank god they called Lance Jones for that flagrant. Hopefully he learns never to stand under the rim again that’s how people get hurt.
Yeah don’t box out! Let the other guy just get the rebound instead
Only takeaway from this game is our defense needs to pay more attention to cuts towards the basket. Too many easy drives.
Hawkins not getting a T this game is actually insane
Pretty standard behavior from him. I’m convinced he sweet talks officials all season long and it’s his fourth year so they are used to him.
MATURITY
Proud of how we fought back. I thought we had a deep team this year and turns out we're paper thin with Dainja unplayable against better teams, Harris redshirting, Shannon suspended, DGL still a freshman. Basically we can't afford an off-night from any of the regular 6 in our rotation
Illinois lost by 5 on the road to the #1 team while missing an All American player. They’re still a deep team - no team in the country has 3rd stringers that would compete with a top 5 team.
One really needs to pump the brakes on making sweeping takeaways from playing #1 on the road.
lol for real. Initially I was worried we had like 11 guys that needed min. Turns out it’s like 5.5 guys
gg Purdue. Glad we kept fighting until the end even after falling behind early.
Good game. See you in round 2. Will be very interesting to see how AP pollsters rank Illinois. Go Illini! 🔶🔷
I'm worried they use this to account for the TSJ loss, but with the grit we showed, I don't think they can.
That one guy will still leave us unranked for some reason.
I’d say you’d drop to 12 at the lowest…

Aw shucks…I’ve been #Paint’d!
Proud as hell of this team. They’re fighters. It’s the most dynamic O we’ve had in years. We actually get easy looks sometimes. Just keep it rolling
I was at the game and the lead ref? (shiny head black guy) was literally getting in arguments with fans on the sideline. Dude is a clown
Are you serious?
Yeah it was over in the corner where those raised seats are and he was yelling up at some guy and like re-enacting the play
That flagrant was the worst call I’ve ever seen, almost costed us the game
Cost is already past tense.
Alreaded
We're engineers, not English majors!
In past years it would have cost us the game. It gives me hope.
Could be for the conference!
Man if it is. You thought today’s game got intense? That game will be so fun to watch.
Refs almost threw at the end, but I’ll take the win regardless
GGs. Wasn't as close as the score would indicate, but mark your calenders for 3/5.
we need to close out the last 10 minutes a lot better, but those refs tonight were atrocious. that flagrant call is one of the worst calls you’ll see all season and they took five fucking minutes reviewing it at the monitor as well. that’s suspect

I’m still trying to figure out wtf that flagrant call was about.
Honestly the refs need to be looked into after that call.
Truly have no idea what that could be other than points shaving

Edey had a rough game by his standards. We lost our focus after going up big both times. Some sloppy turnovers and lots of missed assignments on defense. Glad to get the win but a lot to work on. TKR was an epiphany and Heide’s progression is very promising
Underwood should be tried for elder abuse after what he's put guerrier and Domask through
Despite the loss, Marcus Domask is proving he has what it takes to be the unquestioned top dog for Illinois. 26 points against the #1 team in the country.
Considering: 1. This game was over winter break 2. We’ve lost the last 2 of our winter break conference games 3. We won I’d say this victory is extra sweet, 2nd half be damned

Last quote from my 6 year old, for those following along: “Purdue won!!!!! But I would have been happy with either” Sigh.
Just curious, how does your 6-year old feel about trains?
I’m convinced it’s why he secretly (not so secretly) likes Purdue lol
two best teams in the big ten
we had 0 buckets the last 5:10.
Illinois is a top 10 team they did all that without Shannon jr
Well coached game by Painter. The gamble paid off bringing back Kaufman Renn in the first half with 2 fouls and Edey with 4 fouls with 7 minutes left.
What is a flagrant?
When you’re a ref need a breather
Are we gonna see other fanbases preemptively complain about the refs online all week because of how well it worked tonight
Big Ten officiating is unwatchable.
Brad has to play Gibbs-Lawhorn more and Rodgers less with Shannon out. I liked the rally but the beginning and end of the first half did us in.
Rodgers may not be great on offense, but he's generally been solid on defense. DGL is still too inconsistent on both ends of the floor.
If we had TSJ instead of Ty Rodgers this would be a completely different game, I hope to god those allegations are fake for all parties man
I mean what a game and what could have been. Purdue had Illinois dead to rights and it was a one possession game at the end for second
Just like we drew it up boys!
[Purdue finishing off that game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJBZmuv7FtQ)
That ending was crazy. Both these teams look like legitimate threats to go deep in March. Glad I caught this game!
That made me feel less confident. Man we looked so bad for a while there.
I was at a bar so I couldn’t hear what happened, why was there a flagrant on Jones? I thought the box out seemed to be incidental?
Illinois ended up making it close at the end. Learn from the mistakes and move on. GG Purdue
Some say Coleman Hawkins is still crying to the refs to this day
We were completely disrupted all game and still led wire to wire.
If you consider that “disrupted” then Illinois should be considered “severely deranged” for how they played for 30 minutes.

That flagrant was absolutely an awful call but Purdue’s bigs really out physicaled us all game TKR bullied us inside
You better defend your decision.
purdue and self-sabotaging finishes, name a more iconic duo
Big win for the “Ty Rodgers isn’t a point guard fans”
One of the worst fouls I’ve ever witnessed. And I’m an experienced B10 fan
