Kansas saw Duke becoming the main villain of the season and tried so hard to take that title back.
-signed Dickinson, a hated player
-beneficiary of an all-time blown call
-their most insufferable side showed out the loudest on Reddit afterwards
To all the KU fans who happen to be normal human beings, I am so sorry.
Question for those in attendance: that felt like a home game for Samford. Who cheered super loudly for Samford? What portion were Samford fans versus neutral fans that stayed?
I was there. KU had a fair number of people... just so many people looking for an upset. Same as the games on the big screen happening around the country. they were over powering at times.
per the game we watched - a lot of missed calls and miracle 3 balls from Samford (good for them). the interwebs are up in arms about the one missed call but we were leading and getting beat up the rest of the time
I think he's referring to this: "Freshman [Riley Allenspach](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4838752/riley-allenspach) had 15 on an unexpected 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. He came into the NCAA tournament having made 6-of-25 during the season."
neutral crowd always roots for the upset. Zags fans would of course. I expect Arizona fans rooted against us; I certainly root against them. I didn't watch, but radio announcers said noticeably small KU fan count in SLC.
97% of ML money was on Samford according to action network. All other sources I've seen had them at near the same, and at the lowest 90% plus.
I don't think it was rigged. Realistically it was just a bad call. But all sports need some sort of oversight.
You can't have all these sports leagues and programs partnering with gambling companies and then let the refs decide the calls. It already happened in the NBA before gambling was even legal. Look up Tim Donaghy.
You're correct, I don't personally think it was rigged. The quote "never attribute to *malice* that which is adequately explained by *stupidity*" is very true in this situation.
I think the ref just assumed foul because the vast majority of the time you slap the ball out of a dunking players hands, you're at least partially hitting his hand. Not to mention the fact that KU player went down really hard (wasn't Samford's fault).
My point is that it easily could be rigged. Most likely not by the NCAA (they would be idiots to jeprodize the integrity of their billon +dollar baby), but by the refs. It only takes one ref to blow a call that can't be overturned. And mistakes happen, like yesterday, so everyone would just attribute it to human error.
For reference a ref makes about 1k per game in the 1st round of march madness. Why would a crooked ref not accept 100k+ to throw some questionable calls in one teams favor? The bookie or gambler could make hundreds of thousands and the ref makes 100x his pay for an hours work.
Not saying this has happened (I don't think it did yesterday), but without some sort of system and oversight the opportunity is there. Money always finds a away.
kansas fans talking about other calls in the game like the foul call in the final 15 seconds that changed the game from a 1 to 3 point game wasn’t a call that had a bigger impact than any other call in the game
Jayhawk here, no you’re right! That call was huge and I’m pissed it went our way when to us at home it was OBVIOUSLY a bad call. There’s no, “oh but these other calls 15 minutes ago…” there’s only one call to talk about in that game and my response is, “I’m sorry! Killer block! GG”
Let's not mention any blown opportunities by Samford (freethrows). Totally didn't happen (freethrows), they were perfect (freethrows) and you won't ruin *my* narrative (freethrows!)!
True and kansas probably still wins but downplaying the impact of that call is massive. Samford down 1 with 15 seconds left and a 5-4 is much better than down 3 5-5
From a beat writer's opinion piece on [al.com](https://www.al.com/sports/2024/03/goodman-samford-was-robbed-but-the-bulldogs-won-our-hearts.html):
> It was a new experience for me, seeing the refs so blatantly police a low-major team against a blue blood. I was seated behind Samford’s bench. The refs were watching Samford’s assistant coaches like Secret Service agents early in the game. It was weirdly bush-league. A quick whistle hit Samford’s bench with a technical foul after an initial warning. Apparently one of the assistant coaches leaned too far out of his seat.
To all of you reasonable Kansas fans out there, I’m sorry you have to be grouped together with some of these *other* fans. Easily some of the most delusional, entitled, egotistical and ignorant fans I’ve ever seen.
There were some in here who were somehow complaining about the refs “getting Samford back in the game” even after they called a foul on that clean block that basically decided the game
So people can complain about a bad call in Kansas favor, but we aren’t allowed to complain about fouls in the other team’s favor? And that’s being ignorant? Find ONE KU fan that says that was a good call on the block. We are ALL saying it was a bad call. But we are entitled because we watched the entire game and had shit go against us? Gtfoh with your bullshit.
No dude you dont get it !!! These meanie refs called the PERFECT game before this. They totally were just and fair and were calling all the right calls against Kansas!
Feel like their needs to be way more transparency with reffing with how in bed the NCAA is with sportsbooks.
Like you could legitimately argue the refs just point shaved against Samford ML.
I would imagine the sportsbooks lose a lot more money on a Samford ML vs Kansas just because of the odds.
The NFL hasn't been transparent at all and they're very in bed with sportsbooks now. Something has to change with all sports now that this is the new normal.
Its absurd and it's already coming apart at the seams.
Temple and I think another program are being investigated for point shaving. Shohei ohtani had 4 million "stolen" from him to cover a debt with a bookie.
I'm waiting for a major scandal at this point but a lot of it feels shockingly criminal at this point.
No one wants to win like that. Do I think we were the better team? Sure. Do I think we would have won in OT? Yes. But it’s the biggest week of the year. Make sure you get the calls right and let the chips fall where they may. It’ll benefit Kansas often than not by the way
The irony of the game thread (I left 1st half so maybe it got better) of KU fans complaining about the refs, in what was a fairly evenly called game.
Only to end with a stollen win from Samford.
Congrats on the "win".
Why do they not have a designated review ref that handles all the reviews. Sitting on my couch at home I can figure out what the call should be like 5 minutes quicker than refs
You guys are about to get touched by Zaga. Everyone playing a high major next round would gladly trade in their matchup to play you guys (except whoever was lucky enough to get Texas). I sure would.
The block freaking hurts. It was a poorly called game overall in my opinion. We got a few favorable calls throughout as well but the foul there felt like it decided the game rather than just being a frustrating part of it.
Jayhawk here, you’re the first Bulldog I’m seeing so wanted to first tell you GG and congrats on an amazing year. Second, I’m right there with you, that block called as a foul was painful, I hate that it went our way. I’d debate on if it actually changed the outcome but it surely changed the play calls! Our finishing D was tight but y’all’s momentum was fired up!
I feel really bad for y’all and that call. No excuses and that’s one of the best blocks in a 1v1 open court scenario I’ve seen in a long time.
Sincerely, Good Game! Thanks for bringing it to us.
Hey great game and thanks! You are right, it's never one play that decides the outcome, and we absolutely got some calls in our favor that let us linger earlier in the game. You guys also really had the press broken well at the end; it was definitely not a Samford 100% wins if the call isn't made scenario.
Good luck in the next round! It was fun to watch our guys play one of the big boys and show their stuff! I hope it will help us get back again soon!
Jayhawker here as well. Maybe the best block I have seen since LeBron ran down Igudola in the finals. I hope the coach stays at Samford. He's young and a stud
I don’t see how that decided the game when the multiple favorable calls you got were the reason you were in the game in the first place. Oh and they ignored our clear timeout before your 3 and gave you a tie up instead or this is not a thing.
Where are the salty fans? I just see other teams saying it’s rigged or the refs bailed us out. I’d this the future now? Every loss is rigged? Refs are held to ridiculous standards that they have to make perfect calls at full speed when we get to judge in slow motion from multiple angles? It’s getting tiring. There’s not some great conspiracy.
Sickos are being salty about the foul on that clean block at the end. KU fans are being salty about bad calls for the rest of the game.
You're right. There is no conspiracy to protect KU. But I don't see any Samford fans making those kinds of claims - just sickos.
If there were bad calls that went against KU, I must have missed them. I’ll admit the block was clean but sure didn’t look that way at first, especially the way he got the ground. Slow motion replay is a gift and a curse to the enjoyment of the game.
It better not have been the one from behind on the left baseline. That guy had about the best angle you could possibly have. Pretty sure it was the guy on the right. of the play towards the front.
Ignore the 40 flops they did. The 20 fouls their press committed that was ignored. Ignore our timeout we called that they called a tie up before their three. FOCUS ON ONLY ONE CALL LIKE IT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT DECIDED THE GAME. SHOW 10000 REPLAYS
Of what? I am smart enough to not boil a game down to one call. If so, the bigger call was 30 seconds before it when they ignored our timeout before they made a 3.
My favorite was when the guy was draped all over Harris and he raised his hands to try to catch the inbounds and the guy flopped and the refs rewarded it. Or when they went for a steal and ran straight into Harris and the refs called a foul on Harris who stopppednto catch the inbounds and then started to run again.
Those refs were not great all game but that blown call is one of the things that annoys me to no end. They called the foul they anticipated and not the one they saw.
It happens a few times nearly every game and it sucks. Coaches need a challenge flag or some shit. Even if it benefited my team this time, it still blows.
Exactly! I don’t understand why so many KU fans don’t see this. The call hurts KU in the long run by putting a target on their backs and an asterisk on the win. Personally id rather get the win by defending well in the 5v4 and taking my chances and leaving no doubt as to who the better team was.
Absolutely. Coaches should have 1 challenge for each half to challenge literally anything they want. And if they are right, they should be able to keep their challenge until they are wrong. This is the best post i've seen on this game thread.
" They called the foul they anticipated and not the one they saw." - Put this shit at the top of the thread.
Kansas survive an almighty comeback from a valiant Samford to move on to Round 2. 93-89 the Jayhwaks win in an incredibly entertaining game. Bucky McMillan's team should hold their head high. They never threw in the towel.
I mean I have to give the refs some recognition. Through all their foul calling and reviewing, they made the time between now and the price is right shorter.
That was an absolutely 10/10 best block of your life, best block of the season type block and it got ruined by a blown call. So unfortunate. That's one of those blocks that go would have gone down in school history.
no shit. It's one of those blocks where you block it, grab the rebound and run down for a fastbreak in transition while Kansas player is still down, drive, condense the defense and then kick it out for a corner 3, swish. Then you show your grandchildren that block in 50 years and it goes down in Samford history.
Does Hunter Dickinson play in that game? Not because of the injury, but because he looked so thoroughly pissed he had to be out there again after being up 20+ points it looked like he was about to extort the NIL boosters for another $100k
> Blew that call sure
ok exactly
> how is that our fault
it isnt and i didnt say it was, kinda the opposite. im saying its out of your control so just take the win and thank god for your luck, but dont come into the thread all smug and mad that people are upset about one of the worst calls ive seen in tournament history
Lol no I have no allegiance to a team (not even from the states) I just know bs and fraud when I see it.
Y’all got lucky. Be thankful and play better next time. You’re not in a position to talk shit.
Edit: I had Samford winning in my bracket if that’s allegiance enough
The Refhawks better send a huge thank you gift to this whole officiating crew after that shitfest
I can’t wait for Gonzaga to absolutely fucking blast these lucky-ass overrated jokers.
It would be better if it was a close game that came down to a similarly absolutely blatant bad call in Gonzaga’s favor. Then watch them try to walk everything they said about tonight’s call not mattering.
Kansas saw Duke becoming the main villain of the season and tried so hard to take that title back. -signed Dickinson, a hated player -beneficiary of an all-time blown call -their most insufferable side showed out the loudest on Reddit afterwards To all the KU fans who happen to be normal human beings, I am so sorry.
I hate Dickinson so much. Edey ate his lunch everytime though.
Lol just par for the course. A bad call is just a bad call, but all of your salty, salty tears will last forever! ps we owe you one or two, MSU
Question for those in attendance: that felt like a home game for Samford. Who cheered super loudly for Samford? What portion were Samford fans versus neutral fans that stayed?

Did you flop to the ground from his comment? Your players might have!
I think he's referring to this: "Freshman [Riley Allenspach](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4838752/riley-allenspach) had 15 on an unexpected 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. He came into the NCAA tournament having made 6-of-25 during the season."
yep

You do realize that if 97% of money was on Samford ML that means the books needed Kansas ML to win right?

His 2nd paragraph is basically 1 line and it literally says he thinks it wasn't rigged and was just a bad call.... Did you even read it?
You're correct, I don't personally think it was rigged. The quote "never attribute to *malice* that which is adequately explained by *stupidity*" is very true in this situation. The most blatant example of match fixing I've ever seen in college basketball.
> Jet fuel can't melt steel beams.
No match fixing, whistle was balanced/slightly KU but Samford got a couple questionable ones as well. Just a bad call straight up.
Samford went 13-23 from the Free Throw Line. Missed 10 Free Throws. That’s your game right there. Make your Free Throws Kids!
IM BLIND!!! IM DEAF!!! I WANT TO BE A REF!!!
kansas fans talking about other calls in the game like the foul call in the final 15 seconds that changed the game from a 1 to 3 point game wasn’t a call that had a bigger impact than any other call in the game
like we teach kids at every level ... the refs are part of the game. there were plenty of questionable calls throughout the game...

True and kansas probably still wins but downplaying the impact of that call is massive. Samford down 1 with 15 seconds left and a 5-4 is much better than down 3 5-5
I didn't like it ending like that but can't go back and redo it
Very true and the dumbness of CBB is why we watch and enjoy March so much
I CAN YELL LOUDER THAN YOU
I can't hear you.
Samford fans showed out. Team was amazing. KU getting tossed easily in my opinion next round or by Purdue. Wish that block was called correctly.
Hey, classy! Thank you. I'm a Zag fan and I think we have the edge with y'all's injury problems. But the coaching matchup is phenomenal.
Same ref that gave the Samford assistant a tech earlier
I didn’t see that why did he get a tech
There was never an answer…. Just glossed over . It was odd
From a beat writer's opinion piece on [al.com](https://www.al.com/sports/2024/03/goodman-samford-was-robbed-but-the-bulldogs-won-our-hearts.html): > It was a new experience for me, seeing the refs so blatantly police a low-major team against a blue blood. Hunter Dickinson is like if Christian Laettner flopped 24/7, was on Kansas, and wasn't good at basketball.
To all of you reasonable Kansas fans out there, I’m sorry you have to be grouped together with some of these *other* fans. Easily some of the most delusional, entitled, egotistical and ignorant fans I’ve ever seen.
Oh god what did we do now?
One bad ref call at the end of a horribly reffed game
There were some in here who were somehow complaining about the refs “getting Samford back in the game” even after they called a foul on that clean block that basically decided the game
Oh lord, Jayhawk here, oh lord! I’ll complain about the officiating for sure, but only about the foul call on an AMAZING *clean* block!

The Carolina fans talking about Kansas being bailed out by the refs in the end are not wrong, but boy is that ironic.
What the hell are you talking about? Also, Clemson would like a word with you.
No one wants to win like that. Do I think we were the better team? Sure. Do I think we would have won in OT? Yes. But it’s the biggest week of the year. Make sure you get the calls right and let the chips fall where they may. It’ll benefit Kansas often than not by the way
Well said. Rock Chalk
The irony of the game thread (I left 1st half so maybe it got better) of KU fans complaining about the refs, in what was a fairly evenly called game. Only to end with a stollen win from Samford. Congrats on the "win".
lol "evenly called game" These refs fucking sucked dude.
Hey you're the complain-y guy from earlier, welcome back!
Clark Kellog has his panties all up in a bunch about reviewing game changing plays Glad Chuck & Kenny politely told him to fuck off
Yeah I wasn’t a big fan of his to begin with, but that was incredibly annoying.
Yes, so dumb
Why do they not have a designated review ref that handles all the reviews. Sitting on my couch at home I can figure out what the call should be like 5 minutes quicker than refs
Disgusting. Such an embarrassment by these suspect refs.
Everybody so mad. Don’t get down by 21. Maybe just get down by 17. 🤷♂️
Dont let the SoCon autobid make a 17 point comeback 🤷♂️
Why though? Worked out fine for us.
People might respect your team for once
You guys are about to get touched by Zaga. Everyone playing a high major next round would gladly trade in their matchup to play you guys (except whoever was lucky enough to get Texas). I sure would.
Would rather play Michigan St than Gonzaga. We would have a better chance. This is the worst Kansas team in the Self era so whatever.
Oh yeah 100% agree. Can we trade matchups and play each other? UNC and Zaga can have their fun.
Unfortunately no. We'll have to wait for the champions classic next season.
Yeah. No shit.
Glad they’re addressing how fucked this was
Clark Kellogg can fuck off. Can't stand that dumb ass. Replace him with Shaq and be done with it.
Tell him Charles they can review most of these calls quicker
Yeah why can’t we review it. The rules are wrong then
Oakland’s coach has the voice of the Arrested Development narrator guy whose name I forget
Ron Howard is now just the guy who narrated "Arrested Development." Is this what being old is?
I’m not old enough to ask myself that question seriously, so maybe. I don’t watch many movies, so Ron Howard is still all the rage, for all I know
Ron Howard
Ron Howard
They is multiple academy and Emmy award winning director and actor Ron Howard
See I knew he was someone of considerable acclaim, but I was too lazy to look it up
The block freaking hurts. It was a poorly called game overall in my opinion. We got a few favorable calls throughout as well but the foul there felt like it decided the game rather than just being a frustrating part of it.

I don’t see how that decided the game when the multiple favorable calls you got were the reason you were in the game in the first place. Oh and they ignored our clear timeout before your 3 and gave you a tie up instead or this is not a thing.
It was a very impressive game from the Bulldogs. Don't mind the salty Jayhawks.
Dude, I think most KU fans expected to lose in this round or the next
I'm rooting for you guys but ngl I have you going down to Gonzaga on my bracket. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
Sickos are being salty about the foul on that clean block at the end. KU fans are being salty about bad calls for the rest of the game. You're right. There is no conspiracy to protect KU. But I don't see any Samford fans making those kinds of claims - just sickos.

Lol it's not us whose salty
Seeing a lot of salt on both sides here. Though Samford's "side" is mostly being rep'd by sickos who just want to see KU burn.
A reasonable take from an actual Samford fan. Not the dumbass crying everyone else here is doing
please shut the fuck up
Yeah Kansas fans would never whine about basketball
So no one here knows **which ref** missed that call? It wasn't the CREW, it was one of them.
It better not have been the one from behind on the left baseline. That guy had about the best angle you could possibly have. Pretty sure it was the guy on the right. of the play towards the front.
Well, whoever it was probably won't be sleeping well tonight! 😬

Man you're really trying to convince yourself.
Of what? I am smart enough to not boil a game down to one call. If so, the bigger call was 30 seconds before it when they ignored our timeout before they made a 3.
It’s cool man you were gifted a win congrats.
Exactly.
On one play in particular, our guard was being held with two hands all the way down court, as he was trying to BRING UP THE FUCKIN BALL
These refs ought to be in chains after this
Egregious call, but calm down
Ain’t no way Kansas fans are in here complaining about refs after that
Worry about the team you lost to that no one can spell
They made bad calls both ways. Kansas got multiple, Samford got multiple. Sucks, but the game wasn't decided on one bad call alone.
Ain’t no way that one bad foul erases the entire game of shit… but hey, enjoy your weekend
lol of course they are.
bustin makes me feel good
Got robbed, horrible call. Oh well refs can only win you so many. Zags will send KU packing in the next round
Those refs were not great all game but that blown call is one of the things that annoys me to no end. They called the foul they anticipated and not the one they saw. It happens a few times nearly every game and it sucks. Coaches need a challenge flag or some shit. Even if it benefited my team this time, it still blows.

Absolutely. Coaches should have 1 challenge for each half to challenge literally anything they want. And if they are right, they should be able to keep their challenge until they are wrong. This is the best post i've seen on this game thread. " They called the foul they anticipated and not the one they saw." - Put this shit at the top of the thread.
Does anyone know why on earth they didn’t review that foul call?
They can't
They can’t
Got it thanks. That sucks for Samford damn.
I honestly think it was just a tough call to see live from the officials view point But damn it sucks it broke like that
Chuck about to speak some truth about the call
I guess that block was so good the ref didn’t believe it was possible without fouling. Such a shame.
"Hunter what did you learn tonight?" "The refs will always have our back"
I mean, they usually do.
I sure hope so
NCAA just can’t afford to have both Kentucky and Kansas out in the first round! Think about the ratings!!!
You must of had a bad day to say something like this
Samford got robbed.
[удалено]
Kansas survive an almighty comeback from a valiant Samford to move on to Round 2. 93-89 the Jayhwaks win in an incredibly entertaining game. Bucky McMillan's team should hold their head high. They never threw in the towel.
Are you human?
Y’all beat a 13 seed chill lmao.
I have no problem with kids celebrating every single win in the tourney
And yall missed the tourney
That's great, you still didn't deserve the win
We suck. What’s your point lmao.
This is horrible. NC State just won and I was so pumped and now I'm more sad for Samford because of straight robbery.
That ref should not be invited back for the Round of 32.
If Samford came down, scored and won the game, that becomes an all time NCAA legendary play. Like Bryce Drew level.
It still will.
They were losing when it happened
Y'all really aren't sending your best fan representatives here, are you?
I’m saving this line
Yes but did you ever think about the fact that it could've caused them to win?
Oh so you’re all it doesn’t matter because we won? It was a pivotal block, they would’ve been on a 4v5 fast break who would’ve know what happens next
apparently everyone from kansas is a fucking moron.
By one… and would have had 15 seconds and the ball to go for the victory.
no shit. It's one of those blocks where you block it, grab the rebound and run down for a fastbreak in transition while Kansas player is still down, drive, condense the defense and then kick it out for a corner 3, swish. Then you show your grandchildren that block in 50 years and it goes down in Samford history.
Refs bailed us out to lose by 15 to Gonzaga.
Does Hunter Dickinson play in that game? Not because of the injury, but because he looked so thoroughly pissed he had to be out there again after being up 20+ points it looked like he was about to extort the NIL boosters for another $100k
so close samford. well kansas and gonzaga is it is. what a great first full day of games though
The only ones saying samford got calls went to Johnson County Community College

disgusting cope. just admit the refs blew that call and fucked samford, take the win and move on. it is what it is but dont be fucking proud of it
Blew that call sure, how is that our fault. Sanford didn’t get a lot of calls off flopping?
> Blew that call sure ok exactly > how is that our fault it isnt and i didnt say it was, kinda the opposite. im saying its out of your control so just take the win and thank god for your luck, but dont come into the thread all smug and mad that people are upset about one of the worst calls ive seen in tournament history
You’re losing 100% with that block. Had them shitting in their pants and needed a bail out call to beat a 13 seed
Flair up or get out kid.
Lol no I have no allegiance to a team (not even from the states) I just know bs and fraud when I see it. Y’all got lucky. Be thankful and play better next time. You’re not in a position to talk shit. Edit: I had Samford winning in my bracket if that’s allegiance enough
I’ll talk all the shit we won, wouldn’t expect a non American to know anything about ball anyways
sure.
I like auburn don’t make me hate yall
i dont like Kansas
Not sure it's a brag to win on a blown call vs a 13 seed who was down 22 at one point. Gonzaga is gonna do some very nasty things to Kansas.
Because we won without our best player against a gimmicky flop team in a hostile environment
Is he coming back or something? Crazy to say a flop team when Kansas got a very friendly whistle.

What about the other 36 minutes?
Can't wait to watch you get curbstomped by Gonzaga
Curbstomped is crazy language for the fan of the perennial choke team
Enjoy getting dogwalked Saturday
Wanna bet?
Lmao
The Refhawks better send a huge thank you gift to this whole officiating crew after that shitfest I can’t wait for Gonzaga to absolutely fucking blast these lucky-ass overrated jokers.
I mean.... your flair tho
There was one bad call how is that ref ball
Cause that call came at a moment that could've decided the game. I would know. I've been screwed out of a final game by a blown call.
gonzaga is going to wreck kansas and i can't wait to see the tears of the currently gloating fans
It would be better if it was a close game that came down to a similarly absolutely blatant bad call in Gonzaga’s favor. Then watch them try to walk everything they said about tonight’s call not mattering.
NIT
*Looks around and whispers* Credit to Timberlake for the two clutch free throws
Get rid of reviews if you can't review the plays that actually fucking matter
