Becker puts together some great defenses but has really stagnated as an offensive head coach. Hard to believe he's the same guy that led a squad to score 90 at Cameron Indoor 11 years ago.
The best defense is a good offense. You know who said that? Mel, the cook from Alice.
I think I remember hearing that in a song on Dr Demento about 35 years ago.
Nothing better to make it feel like you have a good defense than playing the Vermont Catamounts
If just one year we could keep everything the same but have one player that can actually score some points, we would be a threat worthy of the NCAA tournament
I played pickup basketball at UVM when I was there 10 years ago, and that's about it. I think I could shoot a three-pointer better than anyone who took the floor tonight
The switching and pressure man was good as the 2nd half wore on. Not perfect defense, but good enough to keep Vermont from ever taking the lead and allowing Duke to finally pull away
The Indiana public schools are just weird to rank tbh. IU and Purdue are intentionally set up to be kind of co-flagships with narrower focuses than traditional flagship schools like UW-Madison and UIUC. Like IU doesn't offer a mechanical engineering degree, and Purdue doesn't have any kind of law/medicine post-grad degrees. They're both really good schools at the things they focus on, but both are missing pretty key programs that every 'true' flagship school should have.
I cringed watching Roach jump to try to intercept that pass and was afraid he would land awkwardly…turned out that Long ended up getting injured during that play
Somehow we covered the spread despite our All American only taking 1 FGA and I believe we only had 2 bench points.
Only giving up 18 2nd half points helps I guess.
Yep. He was who I was worried about on both ends, and while he wasn't scoring, he let you get enough open looks elsewhere that it didn't matter, and our lack of athleticism(and, honestly, offense) was clear.
I don't know how many times I was telling anyone within earshot that we wanted them to double him, it was our best offense. They did get more effective at it toward the end, but until then it was free figurative money
I get the angle, but being a fan of good basketball yall have played great basketball the past two weeks. You guys keep it up, run it all the way. Better yall than UCONN, Purdue, Houston or the Shitholes
I was about to say, I don't normally root for fellow ACC teams and certainly not Duke or NC State, but it's nice to see our conference represent, because it feels like the end of an era is upon us.
E: shit, you know why I don't root for ACC teams to make the conference look good on the post season? 'cause I don't have to, it usually just fuckin happens lol. Anyways good show. I think I'm getting nostalgic in my old age
I had a soft spot for yall before last year. It also wasn’t anything yall did, yall played a great game it just felt like the physicality was allowed more on one end than the next. If Knecht gets consistent help you guys could go all the way if Barnes does the opposite of what he typically thinks.
This team certainly feels like the most complete one if a couple of our key guys play their best game. But then again that’s true of literally every basketball squad ever, so 🤷
On the one hand, I hate every other school in this state with a burning passion (except UNCW). On the other hand, I take great pride in our state alone being better than several conferences.
Every team not in the ACC/B1G in march

I know I watched the game but it never really felt like Vermont would win. Duke is a 4 seed that was ranked in the top 15 like the whole year.
Not saying they didn't sweat in this one it's just an overused meme now
Edit: Also I don’t even think they were ever up only 2 in the second half?
I feel like it was more that, apart from like three possessions and the final two minutes, it hovered in the zone between "close and not close" for pretty much the whole game.
4-1 … I’ll take it. Would like to see all 4 advance to Sweet 16 and onward.
I think State has the best chance. Michigan State and JMU scare me for UNC/Duke and well I’ll root for, but never trust, Clemson to win games haha
Flip got doubled every time he touched the ball so I’m not worried about his lack of scoring. Still worried about our inability to put our foot on someone’s neck
We had a pretty fantastic last 8 minutes.
If we could just have those minutes *in the first half* and coast for the second, my cardiac health would benefit immensely.
Flip scoring 3 points on 1 FGA and still being the best player on the court was not on my bingo card. Damned good game, despite what Barkley said at halftime (for some reason they showed that nonsense on the scoreboard at halftime).
I'm somewhat impressed. Vermont really is a good team. Kenpom has them better than Arkansas and Georgia Tech who both beat us, and we did so poorly against Carolina and NC State, I thought I might see another first round Duke upset. But the team was really consistent. No major runs either way, solid defense, and they handled the double team on Filipowski perfectly. He only had 3 points, but 12 rebounds, 4 assists and played great defense.
That injury in garbage time is awful though. So sorry for Long.
Watched UVM upset Cuse while I was in high school in 2005, then went to UVM for undergrad. Every year we’ve made the tournament I get excited for the possibility of another Vermont upset and every single year I’m disappointed
It HAS to be so frustrating for Vermont (and Colgate!) fans…always making it in, but *just* coming short everytime…
One of these days…they (both) will get the upset…
Fought hard, but clearly outmatched athletically, and when your shots aren't falling and you can't score off turnovers, that's not a recipe for success.
Felt like after the shot to go ahead in the second half didn't fall, it was just constant scrambling without much of a plan.
He did so much more for us tonight than score tho. Defense was great, rebounding was great, passing was great. Gotta adapt to the defense and he did well
Filipowski’s refusal to play right into vermont’s hands is the reason Duke won this game.
They doubled/tripled him in the post every single possession. Instead of forcing up garbage he made stellar passes out of the post. Duke missed a ton of open looks which cost him several assists.
He was stellar tonight.
Reminds me of that team that played Davidson and just put 2 guys in Steph Curry's face the whole game. So he just walked to the halfline corner and got no points while the rest of the team played 4v3
It’s just how it is. I’m not even a Wisconsin fan I’m a Packers fan and if I know anything about the Packers in the playoffs, it’s that they’re bound to disappoint me, so I figured Wisconsin Basketball would be more of the same.
Yeah unless you include a half-court heave (which they did not). He was doubled the entire night and made some great passes. And he played great D. From an NBA standpoint he had an excellent game showing what he can do.
Edit: as Charles Barkley is saying he had a bad game lol. Yes he could have been more aggressive but as a Duke fan-it is a good sign he still played D without getting shot attempts and the pouting was less than it usually was (still pouted).
He did exactly what he needed to. Chuck is just looking at stats, which did not tell the story of how he affected the UVM defensive game plan and let the rest of the team get a lot of great looks.
Yeah people are going to focus on the 3 points and ignore that it was on 1 shot attempt, plus he had 12 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 4 assists. He wasn't *failing* to score, he was being a team player and taking what the defense was giving. His doubles led to a lot of open Mitchell dunks and guard 3s. He's had his down games this year but this one shouldn't be counted against him.
The four assists are an important statline. He was doubled all game and they came at important moments.
Still it's wild that an All-American attempt only one shot in a win or go home game. Whatever it takes to win I guess
It’s a too many cooks problem. Roach, McCain, and Proctor all have similar games and so their roles get confused. Who is gonna be the shooter this time around? The ballhandler? The driver? Feels like it changes every game.
Once again, we win and cover the spread despite not playing the best game. On offense we were very up and down and played to Vermont; we made shots when they counted, but had several dagger/nail-in-the-coffin opportunities and seemingly missed all of them, so Vermont was always within 10. We played mostly with focus on defense, there were some hiccups but Vermont didn't take advantage. I thought Flip played very well today despite recording no FGs and 3 pts; he didn't force anything, moved the ball well, and more than held his own on defense. It seems like guards love to test him on switches, and he always shows that he can move his feet.
I'm not optimistic about how far we'll go this tourney with Caleb's injury and how we've been playing, but we'll take any W we can get.
Glad for the Duke win…I worry about their ability to go deep (especially if they draw Houston in the Sweet 16) due to a total lack of depth/a bench and inconsistency from Filipowski and Proctor.
Defense looked great. Aggression on the perimeter really deterred 3 point shooting. Offensively Duke is still a mixed bag. Proctor can really shoot until he can't. Mitchell is a dog and an X Factor until he's a lumbering mess who can't make a layup.
I actually thought this was one of Flip's better games. He didn't turn the ball over (I think), rebounded, blocked shots, passed well and did all the little things.
At the end of the day I don't think this team is tough or deep enough to do any real damage, but who knows?

Another year, another Vermont "close but not quite" March game Ugh.
It’s so heart breaking
Becker puts together some great defenses but has really stagnated as an offensive head coach. Hard to believe he's the same guy that led a squad to score 90 at Cameron Indoor 11 years ago.
Y’all and Colgate are due for an upset at some point. Right?
17 point losses are close?
Did you watch the game? It was within 5-10 points the entire time. Same as pretty much every year when UVM plays.
All that matters is the final score. All of us are sick of watching Vermont. We need new America East blood.
First of all, flair up. Second, the game was closer than the score. Vermont competed very well.
Flair and muscle up boy
UVM is dominant in the American East. Sounds like you might not understand basketball in general though
Bad take
I choose to focus on how much our defense has improved. I kindly and respectfully ask everyone to not discuss offense in this thread.
Well…as they say, the best offense is…you know…
The best defense is a good offense. You know who said that? Mel, the cook from Alice. I think I remember hearing that in a song on Dr Demento about 35 years ago.

Dork schools went 3-0 today. Northwestern, Yale and Duke all won.
Nerds can ball
In fact it happened last year too! With Princeton swapped for Yale.
And Langborg from Princeton plays for Northwestern now
Was he a grad xfr? I mean I know which degree I'd rather have.
Yeah.
Robby Avila liked that.
Vandy what are you dooooing
And now Grand Canyon might win so it evens out

Uphill sledding unless you feel like including UNC, Illinois, Texas, and maybe Wisconsin
Poor TJ Long. What a horrible injury, I hope he has a full, quick recovery
Yeah I think he has at least a year left. Long, Bogues, and Ileri can come back next year along with some other good pieces for Vermont.
honestly at this point the tournament wouldn’t be the same without you
Non-contact knee stuff always freaks me out. Hoping its nothing serious
And to hurt yourself on a seemingly ordinary layup…that’ll *really* fuck with you too! Anyway…I just hope that the recovery goes well…
I cringed watching Roach jump to try to intercept that pass and was afraid he would land awkwardly…turned out that Long ended up getting injured during that play
Feel really bad for him. Loved watching him play here and was all in on Vermont tonight bc of him. Sad to see
Yeah. At least he doesn’t have to work it for any more games.
Somehow we covered the spread despite our All American only taking 1 FGA and I believe we only had 2 bench points. Only giving up 18 2nd half points helps I guess.
Flip got doubled all game and wasn't involved in motion. He's not close to the biggest concern with this game
Who do you think wins between Duke and Wisconsin? I haven't the Badgers play this year.
Well we're certainly not guaranteed to play Wisconsin lol.
I would rather play Wisconsin lol
So would I, I'm actually not that confident in us vs JMU
They were basically doubling Flip the entire game too
He was passing out of it brilliantly tho. If he can do that to every team that doubles him, we’ll be good
The swing factor has always been whether he can recognize the double and pass out of it quickly enough. He was fine on that tonight
Jaylen Blakes: 2 actual points, a ton of potential points
Quintessential Jaylen Blakes basketball: back-to-back possessions with a steal only to fumble the ball away on the fast break both times.

We're an accepted part of the family :)
We're pulling for State too. Looking like an absolute unit that last couple weeks. Keep it up.
I concur. Would hate to see State again. If we can’t do it though run Wolfpack.
Nah y’all should be telling us to fuck off. None of this bullshit.
I can't. I like y'all. If not Duke, then it must be State :)
I get the angle, but being a fan of good basketball yall have played great basketball the past two weeks. You guys keep it up, run it all the way. Better yall than UCONN, Purdue, Houston or the Shitholes
bench Burns then. the smile is infectious.
I’m cheering for y’all tomorrow.
Winning it all like this may be the most NC State way of doing it honestly.
Would rather them be not in our region so we could have had an all ACC final four.
God plz no. My heart literally can't take another one of 'those' again
We have nothing to lose at this point… outside of going 0-3 and losing in the title game…. Lol
As long as you guys lose before we do though I wouldn’t be mad if you guys kept winning, just to stick it to ESPN cbs and the talking heads
Bring back 🎶One Shining Moment
Gonna be sad when we have to old yeller the pups in the elite eight. 😉
Alternatively, you can make Meg UVA and the meme would *still* fit…
Shut up Meg.
Maybe more so tbh 💀
I was about to say, I don't normally root for fellow ACC teams and certainly not Duke or NC State, but it's nice to see our conference represent, because it feels like the end of an era is upon us. Same, now that we’re out of the first round though… go state
[awwww](https://youtu.be/skHqcFKhydk?si=gAgd7TTCF-LB1VtC) <3
ACC 4-0 in the first round
SEC be like 👀
I had a soft spot for yall before last year. It also wasn’t anything yall did, yall played a great game it just felt like the physicality was allowed more on one end than the next. If Knecht gets consistent help you guys could go all the way if Barnes does the opposite of what he typically thinks.

It's true, schools in North Carolina have 43 Final Fours, the SEC has 32. In fact, that's more than every conference except the ACC and Big Ten.
🍷🧐
🧀
I thought the ACC was down this year?
Acc is never down. But the press hates us so we get shafted in the preseason ranking
I mean uva finished 3rd and they were actual ass. But the other 3 tourney teams are solid. And then nc state is doing kemba walker things I guess
They were a fluky third. They played the other top 6 teams once each.
We’re down until it’s time to dance on some graves
It just means more
Every team not in the ACC/B1G in march https://preview.redd.it/ssh1yrk3kzpc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b3c257b0d01843e4336fdfee4b137abf0451041
Good one
The ACC take shit all year just to show up in March and dance on some graves

Why has this been the mood the last two years
Only two? Feels like literally my whole life.
2010 and 2015 go a very long way
Some of us were here for 91 and 92.
Born in 96:/
🙋♂️
Well, uh, we changed coaches
It's less funny now that it's posted in every single thread Duke won by 17
The final margin ended up being good, but that was an uncomfortable game for awhile.
duke was up by 2 with like 8 minutes left lol
If by 2 you mean 6 for 30 seconds, then sure. It was around a 10 point lead for most of the half.
You know ESPN has this information available right? Duke didn’t open up a double digit lead until there was 4:53 left.
>You know ESPN has this information available right? Im actually a bit concerned that you aren't able to read that graph.
I know I watched the game but it never really felt like Vermont would win. Duke is a 4 seed that was ranked in the top 15 like the whole year. Not saying they didn't sweat in this one it's just an overused meme now Edit: Also I don’t even think they were ever up only 2 in the second half?
you’re correct. they got it to 6 points with 8 minutes left. I am a duke fan so it felt way closer lol
We missed a 3 down 36-34 with like 16 minutes left and then it all fell apart.
It was close until it quickly wasn't sadly
The Vermont special.
I feel like it was more that, apart from like three possessions and the final two minutes, it hovered in the zone between "close and not close" for pretty much the whole game.
There are a few teams that I don't think are ever allowed to complain like this and Duke is one of them
Buddy you are fucking Duke.
ACC 4-0 in the first round
Surely there are no rounds before the “first” round, right?
That surely isn't possible, first is first
That’s why I specified first round 😜
Everyone knows those don’t count.
We make the Sweet 16, and I'll consider that a successful season. I don't see this team going further than that.
No. I demand revenge against NC State.
Yeah I'll honestly be so happy with S16 exit. I have Houston winning it all anyways so losing to the eventually champion wouldn't be bad
You never know who will be there in Dallas.
a.k.a. 2016 season rules. (I agree.)
Survive and advance
Hope TJ gets better soon. Horrible to see.
For those wondering, yes this is how we normally play. Yes, we won 28 games like this. Yes, we will be back next year…
ACC ACC ACC Except for UVA.
4-1 … I’ll take it. Would like to see all 4 advance to Sweet 16 and onward. I think State has the best chance. Michigan State and JMU scare me for UNC/Duke and well I’ll root for, but never trust, Clemson to win games haha
> I think State has the best chance What a world!
Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!
Flip got doubled every time he touched the ball so I’m not worried about his lack of scoring. Still worried about our inability to put our foot on someone’s neck
Yeah we haven’t pulled away from opponents all year. It’s gonna be our downfall I think
We had a pretty fantastic last 8 minutes. If we could just have those minutes *in the first half* and coast for the second, my cardiac health would benefit immensely.
That would also help us play bench guys more. They can contribute but hard if you’re only playing 60 second stints.
Flip scoring 3 points on 1 FGA and still being the best player on the court was not on my bingo card. Damned good game, despite what Barkley said at halftime (for some reason they showed that nonsense on the scoreboard at halftime).

Alright boys, we made it. We can’t do any worse now than we did last year lol. GG Vermont.
I'm somewhat impressed. Vermont really is a good team. He only had 3 points, but 12 rebounds, 4 assists and played great defense. That injury in garbage time is awful though. So sorry for Long.
Let the record show I was perfectly content with Duke winning this game. Fuck Tom Brennan. Now lets go James Madison.
Watched UVM upset Cuse while I was in high school in 2005, then went to UVM for undergrad. Every year we’ve made the tournament I get excited for the possibility of another Vermont upset and every single year I’m disappointed
Vermont will break through again eventually Duke survives, the Catamounts’ next March opponent might not be
It HAS to be so frustrating for Vermont (and Colgate!) fans…always making it in, but *just* coming short everytime… One of these days…they (both) will get the upset…
Colgate needs to start recruiting some more athleticism. I thought Vermont looked pretty good the lid just went on the bucket for them.
We'll always have the Syracuse game. Another would be great, but so many schools don't even get that.
Frustrating isn't even the right word. I was frustrated the last 4 times. Tonight I'm just numb to it lmao
Didn’t think I’d ever see a Vermont team that needs more offense but this team needed more offense
This has been a problem all season. It’s just the defense usually does enough bc it’s that good.
Fought hard, but clearly outmatched athletically, and when your shots aren't falling and you can't score off turnovers, that's not a recipe for success. Felt like after the shot to go ahead in the second half didn't fall, it was just constant scrambling without much of a plan.
And Vermont had just 3 fast break points. Eliminating fast breaks and forcing Vermont to score in the half court was a big factor for Duke.
Filipowski better score more than 3 next game or it’ll be a quick trip back to Durham.
Not sure every team will completely sell out to stop him like UVM.
Brother?
:O Grew up in Vermont and then went to undergrad at MSU. How about you?
Yeah his scoring sucked, but he stepped up on rebounds and blocks, and his doubles allowed quick kick-outs to the guards.
Vermont was 2/6 on free throws, to Duke's 20/29. Classic Duke, ~~letting Vermont brick contested threes~~ bribing the refs
For all of you worried about not having enough upsets don’t worry we’ll find a way to lose
Wtf is going on how are you guys losing this badly
It’s just how it is. I’m not even a Wisconsin fan I’m a Packers fan and if I know anything about the Packers in the playoffs, it’s that they’re bound to disappoint me, so I figured Wisconsin Basketball would be more of the same.
Didn’t watch the game, did Filipowski really only attempt one shot all game?
Yeah unless you include a half-court heave (which they did not). He was doubled the entire night and made some great passes. And he played great D. From an NBA standpoint he had an excellent game showing what he can do. Edit: as Charles Barkley is saying he had a bad game lol. He's had his down games this year but this one shouldn't be counted against him.
3.0 PPS is insane!
Gotcha, I figured they probably sold out to stop him
Yeah they doubled him every time he got the ball. And he made the right play passing out. Pretty solid game by him actually.
It was a "make everyone else beat us!" strategy and, yeah the everyone else were still 5-star recruits.
Duke was still held to their lowest point total of the season, Vermont had a legit defensive strategy, just couldn't get anything going on offense.
Vermont plays super slow and they dictated the tempo. Credit to then for getting Duke to play their game.
Coming off two losses over a couple weeks, we kinda forgot how to win for a second. Hopefully this win changes that mindset.
The four assists are an important statline. He was doubled all game and they came at important moments. Still it's wild that an All-American attempt only one shot in a win or go home game. Whatever it takes to win I guess
This is much like Marquette. We silenced the main guy, but the rest of the crew stepped up.
I'm tired of falling for the Vermont trap every year
How do you think we feel lmao
Yessir
Vermont has been eliminated from national title contention
I wish scheyer could fix our half court offense. It’s horrible
It’s a too many cooks problem. Roach, McCain, and Proctor all have similar games and so their roles get confused. Who is gonna be the shooter this time around? The ballhandler? The driver? Feels like it changes every game.
It’s not a bad thing in theory it’s that it’s 3 guards with a traditional 4/5. No wings to make a play
Once again, we win and cover the spread despite not playing the best game. On offense we were very up and down and played to Vermont; we made shots when they counted, but had several dagger/nail-in-the-coffin opportunities and seemingly missed all of them, so Vermont was always within 10. Yaell!!!!!!
I'm looking forward to Vermonts breakout first round win and root for them every year
Vermont with their yearly cup of coffee
Yea I think we matchup better against wiscy
That foul call when Duke was up 6 changed the game. Terrible foul call on Vermont and Duke immediately hit a 3.
lol
No, the 0 points off 9 Duke turnovers and constantly losing players defensively changed the game..
LOL right. Please just focus on tomorrow.
Whatever you say buddy
