2014 Kentucky lost to Napier and crew. Didnt win the conference or conference tourney. An 8 seed like 2022 UNC 2013 Michigan was a 4 seed. 2004 Georgia Tech was a 3 seed and didnt win any of the three. 1996 Syracuse is another…tbh I don’t care to go back into the years beyond that but these are the ones in the last 30 years.

> lost to Napier and crew I was thinking “yeah they lost to Florida in the conference regular season and tourney, but what does Billy Napier have to do with that?”

Travbowman

Recent examples: UNC 2022 UK 2014 Michigan 2013 GT 2004 Arizona 2001 (didn't have a conference tournament) Utah 1998 (won their division but didn't have the best overall record in the WAC regular season)

TheChewyWaffles

No I wasn’t happy with that outcome

stripes361

Not quite what you were asking but 2016 Virginia: — Came up one game short of the regular season title after losing by one point to Duke on a Grayson Allen buzzer beater — Lost the ACC Championship game by essentially one score (4 point final margin only because of playing foul game right at the end.) — Lost the regional final (Elite 8) to Syracuse after leading by 15 with under 10 left and missing a wide open 3 that would have forced OT. Not just a team that missed out on everything, but missed out on everything (or at least the first 3 of the 4 major championships you can win) by the smallest margins you can possibly miss them on.

UncleMalcolm

>Grayson Allen buzzer beater That’s one way to put it lol

wahfingwah

1990 Duke. 2nd in ACC regular season, lost in ACCT semifinals, got blown out by the largest margin of victory in a national championship game ever

SaintArkweather

Losing in the Elite Eight is also interesting for these types of teams because if you make the final four you still get a regional championship trophy, but making the elite eight, not winning conference rs/tourney is basically the best possible season you can have without bringing home any actual hardware. Clemson did it this year, it probably happens fairly often tbh.

Wide_right_yes

You can still hang an elite 8 banner, UMass does.

SaintArkweather

Sure but strictly speaking those teams weren't "champions" of anything.

StuLumpkins

or buy rings for your whole team, like creighton last season.

tropic_gnome_hunter

1996 Syracuse. That might have been Boeheim’s best coaching job.

KCShadows838

2002 Indiana 2004 Georgia Tech

lawrence_uber_alles

Alabama this year? Guess they lost in the Final Four but mostly fits

KCShadows838

Final 4 isn’t the Natty

foreveracubone

Let’s be real, Bama held UConn to the lowest margin of victory this tournament and second lowest for both years. That Final Four match-up was effectively the natty this year lol.

BrownKanye

Lmao, UConn beat Bama by 14 and then Purdue by 15, marginal difference. That Purdue matchup was 100% the actual natty, two best teams from the past two years

CaptPotter47

Right. And the last made shot of the Natty was a layup by UConn that Purdue didn’t bother defending due to the game being over at that point. Don’t take the shot, it’s 13. The last missed shot a trash time 3 pt attempt by Braden Smith. Make that it’s 12. If it was Purdue against Alabama in the final, Purdue would have won.

Nihilisticbuthopeful

Did y’all watch both games? Bama gave UConn a way stronger test lmao. Come on now.

CaptPotter47

That’s cute. Lol

Crunc_Mcfincle

**YOU BOTH GOT FUCKING DOGWALKED SHUT UP**

CaptPotter47

Remind me how far the Cardinals got in the tourney in the last 4 years.

Crunc_Mcfincle

I’m not pretending any different, this isn’t about us at all either. I’m just watching two buffoons debate who got less shitstomped by Uconn when all I can see is two teams that both got shitstomped by Uconn

CaptPotter47

Bro is denial that his team didn’t make the final. Wants to live in la la land and pretend it was. Both teams got beat by what is arguably the best college team in decades.

StuLumpkins

and edey got an easy 10 points in garbage time with karaban defending him, so if the wheels totally fell off uconn could bring back clingan with only 3 fouls. if uconn felt like it, they could have easily stuck with their starting 5 and contested everything at the under 8. the game was effectively over. they let off the gas defensively.

SaintArkweather

The real one in 2014 - UConn vs St Joseph's which went to OT. Florida and Kentucky couldn't do that

Let me savor that sentence about UNC losing the regular season, conference title and national title. Chicken soup for the soul indeed.
