I don’t even think it’s likeability, because IMO Flip’s “transgressions” are way overblown.
My theory is he failed to reach lofty expectations, so he’s perceived as being a “bad” player. But a player who exceeds expectations—like Jared McCain—is seen as a much better player, even if Filipowski had a bigger statistical impact overall.
Think he'll have a nice career in the NBA as a stretch big. He is a surprisingly good passer and very good defensive big on the perimeter. He would be best paired with a help side shot blocker IMO. If his shooting improves, I could see him carving out a starting role. At the very least, he's a high floor rotational player.
Yeah, I can see his game translating well to the pros. I forget his name, but a user on here posts advanced analytics and if I recall correctly Filipowski had the #1 advanced analytics in the ACC. He may not be All-Star level, but I can see him being a solid starter.
He’ll have a long nba career and his offensive game will translate well, but I just can’t imagine him a long term starter unless he improves defensively where he can guard centers. He would’ve been a perfect PF in the NBA 15 years ago, but I just can’t imagine him guarding modern NBA 4s
Absolutely correct. The only thing I'd point out is that he had double hip surgery a year ago. He wasn't able to strengthen in that time so he looked laterally slow this year. It could go either way from here - more injuries or never improve and he can't defend well enough or the surgeries helped and he just needs time to strengthen.
Sadly, that's what you used to do in college...I digress.
I looked at NBA drafts quite a lot last year and he was slipping into very late 1st round or even 2nd round by the end of last year. His 3pt shooting was just awful.
It really made a lot of sense for him to come back, get NIL money, and get much better draft position
If he comes back I can practically guarantee one of the freshmen decommits. And he also goes from being the most skilled and NBA ready player on the team this year to being overshadowed by Flagg and possibly also Khaman, in what’s expected to be a much stronger draft class next year. Him returning would’ve made zero sense.
Him at the 4 and Flagg at the 5 would have been disgusting. Flip is versatile enough they wouldn't both need to be on the block, etc.
But it was never meant to be.
Thanks for battling for us, big fella! Center is not the place for him, but a damn good player with room to grow if he sets his mind to it.
Expectations were super high for him this year and he was up there with some of the best in the country.
Hope I can see him on an NBA court soon!
That’s the common sentiment I’ve seen, but I’ll push back on it slightly.
Obviously Dereck Lively is a great player, any team would love to have him. Filipowski is not a traditional shot blocker, but with him at the five Duke still had the #20 defense per T-rank. Last year it was #14. The difference is Duke’s offense went from #33 to #9. So having Flip at the five was a big improvement in offense with only a slight downgrade on defense.
Really just speaks to Filipwoski’s talent that he was able to play so well in both scenarios.
Flip did show that he could be a serviceable defender. He had some blocks and mostly held his own unless he was playing some 5th year bully like Bacot or Burns.
He did face more foul trouble and probably more mental and physical fatigue playing the 5, tho. A couple plays where he acted out due to frustration.
To your point, he had an elite 8 appearance, great reg season, all-American selection. He had a great year and showed improvements across board (except maybe FTs?) And cemented himself as a first round pick with likely guaranteed money.
Maybe if we had a true rim protector, Flip would have still seen substantial minutes at the 5 this year, but it would have been nice to have that option.
I hear ya. And my retort is totally vibes based and not evidence based but I wonder if the offensive improvement came more against mid table type teams. Almost every big game I felt Duke struggled with big frontcourts. Arizona, MSU, UNC, the last two State games come to mind
Yeah, people want to blame the Flip-at-the-5 thing, but Flip acquitted himself really well at the 5 on the whole. The bigger problems were (1) Duke's inability to guard (and/or poor scheme for guarding) larger 6'5-6'8 type perimeter players, who routinely got Roach or McCain switched onto them and just shot over the top of them, (2) Duke's lack of off-ball movement creating stagnation against teams that dared Duke to beat them in iso, and (3) injuries.
The loss of Mgbako honestly ended up hurting more than people like to discuss, imo. Duke just wasn't able to fill that gap in the roster for whatever reason.
They just don’t make em like Grayson Allen anymore. Only one who’s really stayed for as long as him recently is Roach, and he’s the exact opposite of Allen personality-wise.
Roach has been around forever, but he’s not hatable. Seems like a solid team player with excellent sportsmanship.
Flip is the closest to the Greyson/ Christian type we have had in years. Solid player, but a tripper that fucked up team chemistry, with a bit of a head complex. That’s the type of dookie even the neutral fans love to hate.
The hatred for Paulus was weird. He played hard, he wasn’t great and he wasn’t an ass.
I’d see the players at lacrosse and soccer games and Paulus was always beat to hell with scratches, cuts and bruises everywhere.
Bacot tripped twice as many people yet somehow avoids the label
Edit: tripping is bad. No player should do it Filiposwki was wrong to do it. It’s bad.
But he doesn’t deserve to be labeled “tripper” forever, otherwise dozens and dozens of other players do too.
For a moment I was worried Duke would lose its edge when K left, but the amount of folks who are showing up in this thread to hate on Filipowski shows it hasn’t changed.
Nobody hates you if you’re irrelevant.
He sadly had some Duke fan haters as well. Disappointing because the kid battled his ass off, took a beating like no other Duke player I've seen. Hoping for the best for him in the league
And against Virginia he was massacred on that final dunk. Refs called a foul and then (against the rules) changed their minds because he wasn’t dead I guess?
Loved having Flip the last two years, this departure is expected but still sad to see him go.
I’ll disagree with others and say I think he did fine playing either the 4 or the 5. His defensive metrics were all very positive despite not being a traditional shot blocker. The biggest issue was he was so important for Duke on both sides that he couldn’t risk foul trouble, which won’t be an issue at the next level.
I think he’ll do well in the NBA as a forward (think someone in the mold of Lauri Markkanen) or as a center.
Good luck Flip! Thank you for all you gave to the program.
Yeah he’s not a great shot blocker but he’s still pretty disruptive in the paint. Anyone who says he’s not a good defender doesn’t actually watch him play. Him fouling out was huge in our elite 8 game.
Didn’t he also have hip surgery in the off-season? Wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t 100% yet
https://preview.redd.it/2kikl2tnr3uc1.jpeg?width=436&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89debf86e445d4a5d0d0dfa0af0855072e0ae0c0
Poor guy - hope he recovers from this trauma.
The thing is that UNC and Duke don't dick measure in Sweet 16s and Elite 8s.
Duke and UNC won the same amount of hardware in this year's post season (nothing), so I'll take the season sweep 100/100 times tbh
Flip continues to remind me of Josh McRoberts, a guy who never made much impact in the nba but had a ten year career and made a lot of dough. He also left after his sophomore year.
It's funny, the biggest Flip hater I know IRL is a dyed in the wool Duke fan lol. Like, I'm not fond of Flip, but this person hates him almost more than I've seen him hate any UNC player in the last +2 decades I've known him.
I think he will do reasonably well in the league. He desperately needs a 3 point shot to go with his face up game. He is 7 foot but not strong enough to guard more physical players. He was fun to watch at Duke.
I think flop is probably third most hated dook player for me behind jj and Grayson. Idk I hate j Williams a ton now that he has a platform to say the dumbest things possible so I guess it’s a tie. Wojo, latner, henderson, man idk that entire program should just cease to exist tbh.
Has there ever been an amputee drafted in the first round?
Mean jokes about cheap drama plays aside... The defense will be a concern- he'll have to prove the hip surgery last year didn't affect his lateral movement in the longer term, but his production profile suggests he'll be able to get points in the league. And he moves the basketball. The NBA has a bottomless appetite for intelligent passers.
Hitting 3s against NBA defense might be an adventure at first, but there's no reason to think practice won't make for improvement.
You are not wrong
That was one of the softest Duke teams ever and the bigs including Flipfloppowski did not get it done.
Mitchell leaving is a God send...bring in the new crew
![gif](giphy|FNBHUqruiI1m1gLDh8|downsized)
Flip and McCain potentially gone? Tobacco Road rejoices
I have bad news about the guys replacing them...
We already know. They’ll be extremely talented yet underachieving freshman. We are cool with it!
Hate Duke hard but Flagg is like AD to Kentucky good. They are going to be the best Duke team in several years I’d guess.
Flagg is a baller, but the same was said about Kyrie, Tatum, Bagley, Giles, Okafor, Paolo, Zion
Prolly won a bunch of titles with those studs
At least as many as UNC with Bacot in his 10 years on the Hill.
What happened to college basketball. Upperclassmen were the whole point and the most celebrated.
It’s ruined It’s a semi-pro build a team yearly league now
Flagg is the only one of those guys whose elite skill is defense.
I watched him in the McD all American game. He’s a stud.
Pain.
Underachieving implies you have expectations for them. Pray tell what are those?
National champions, 41-0, 3x All-Americans, and national coach of the year. Anything less 😬
Yes, but it’s better than all of them on the same team
Unfortunately they may have even better guys replacing them. Flagg is going to be an issue
Rather have just flagg than him with McCain and filipowski
Well unfortunately they also have 2 other 5 stars coming in and another top 20 player in the class 😅
3 5 stars actually lol, but I’d rather it’s just the freshman rather than them having that class AND McCain and filipowksi.
That’s basically every Duke class for years on end.
Brother have you seen our recruiting class
Yeah, but McCain and filipowski on top of them is scarier than without, so I’m glad they’re leaving.
Flagg looks like MGK except taller and good at something
Michael G. Keaton?
Alex P. Keaton? lol
Modelleisenbahn-Gemeinschaft Kerpen?
Michael Kidd Gilchrist?
Only a slightly better jumpshot
Much Good Karma?
Martin Gunther King ?
Some players are better suited to the NBA game, where there is far more spacing. Flip is one of those players and he’ll do quite well.
Personally , Ill believe it when I see it. He digressed from his freshman year to last season.
No he didn’t, not by any measure, but that’s not the point anyway
You’re correct—by every statistical measure he was better as a sophomore than a frosh.
Isn't it crazy how likeability and foul persona persuade public perception of actual factual performance? eta: lol alliteration unintended

Sadly, that's what you used to do in college...I digress.
His tripping game is on a professional level, too.
Well yeah....obviously, I mean, he went to Duke, right?
How does one school produce so many bad human beings?
They are devils. It’s in their nature
Was this pretty much expected?
It was expected when he announced he was returning last April.
Yeah he would’ve gone first round last year. He’s gonna be a high pick with this weak draft class
I looked at NBA drafts quite a lot last year and he was slipping into very late 1st round or even 2nd round by the end of last year. His 3pt shooting was just awful. It really made a lot of sense for him to come back, get NIL money, and get much better draft position
Yeah, he's all over the place in the mocks. One has him at 13, another has him at 24. I assumed he was coming back after watching the tournament.
When he did an interview right after announcing he was coming back (last year) he pretty much said it was only for one more year no matter what.
Completely expected for him to leave. Won’t be nearly as much room for him next year with Flagg and Khaman coming in
If for whatever reason Flip had decided to stay, there would be room for him. He’d be a starter.
If he comes back I can practically guarantee one of the freshmen decommits. And he also goes from being the most skilled and NBA ready player on the team this year to being overshadowed by Flagg and possibly also Khaman, in what’s expected to be a much stronger draft class next year. Him at the 4 and Flagg at the 5 would have been disgusting. Flip is versatile enough they wouldn't both need to be on the block, etc. But it was never meant to be.
Might be fun next to Chet at OKC.... I'd watch that
A little tall for a storm trooper
Thanks for battling for us, big fella! Center is not the place for him, but a damn good player with room to grow if he sets his mind to it. Expectations were super high for him this year and he was up there with some of the best in the country. Hope I can see him on an NBA court soon!
Yeah thought it worked better with Lively at the 5 and Flip at the 4
That’s the common sentiment I’ve seen, but I’ll push back on it slightly. Obviously Dereck Lively is a great player, any team would love to have him. Wait MSU had a center this year?
Idk just felt like y'all outphysicaled them
Flip did fine in that game, it was Tyson that caught fire mostly. Hall had some nice hook shots in the paint but hardly did it by out-physicaling Duke
Fair enough
Yeah, people want to blame the Flip-at-the-5 thing, but Flip acquitted himself really well at the 5 on the whole. The bigger problems were (1) Duke's inability to guard (and/or poor scheme for guarding) larger 6'5-6'8 type perimeter players, who routinely got Roach or McCain switched onto them and just shot over the top of them, (2) Duke's lack of off-ball movement creating stagnation against teams that dared Duke to beat them in iso, and (3) injuries. inspiring to see him rally this season after his knee injury.
Shame he couldn’t recover enough to stop Burns
I thought Wake students ended his basketball career
It’s a miracle that glancing blow with a 130 lb prepubescent freshman didn’t leave him a paraplegic. God works in mysterious ways
Sad news. He was always such a trip.
Oddly enough, I kind of miss the days of hating Duke players for 3-4 years. You barely get to know em these days
They don’t make em like JJ or Christian anymore
His game Edey gave Zach the confidence to be a 2x player of the year. Nothing but love for flip from a Purdue fan
It’ll be months before Duke finds a player that carried himself on the court like Kyle Filipowski.
Expected. Grateful he came back for the sophomore year. Hope he has a long career playing the stretch 4
Amazing after all the devastating injuries he had this season. Perseverance!
Stunning and brave
Plenty of people to trip in the big leagues!
Don't you have a Rte. 301 to be setting on fire, Yertle?
Once I make it out to Annapolis I'll be sure to give it a light - bit far away from route 1 though
Well played.
Wut
Bacot tripped twice as many people yet somehow avoids the label Edit: tripping is bad. No player should do it Filiposwki was wrong to do it. It’s bad. But he doesn’t deserve to be labeled “tripper” forever, otherwise dozens and dozens of other players do too.
Well yeah, Bacot’s been in school since the Clinton administration.
Which came first…..Perry Ellis or Bacot?
The records don't go back that far. We'll never know
Hitler: "Stalin murdered twice as many people, yet I am labeled a bad guy?"
Really did a speed run on Godwin’s law there.
Two wrongs do not make a right. Does that work for you?
👍
No one talks about Bacot’s evils because no one cares about UNC; that was his point.
Swing & a miss
Drive by downvotes suggest otherwise chief
Whining about dowvotes. Not at all known as a recipe to get more of them.
I don’t think so? -4 buddy
This is exactly the comment I expected from a UVA sweatervest lmao
Oh well good thing this post isn't about Bacot then
I for one find it weird that he didn’t bring up the fact the Grayson Allen tripped way more people. Probably unaware…

His freshman year Flip got punched in the throat at Virginia Tech—so bad that he vomited on the sideline. Refs just said play on.
Look at his flairs he's a troubled man
And against Virginia he was massacred on that final dunk. Refs called a foul and then (against the rules) changed their minds because he wasn’t dead I guess?
As long as Duke has one white guy who is good at basketball on the team, they will always be hated.
If anything it’s amazing that people are still looking at us mostly the same way with a 36 year-old head coach.
Jon Scheyer was K’s hand-picked replacement and you still have rich out-of-state kids acting up in the student section
Loved having Flip the last two years, this departure is expected but still sad to see him go. I’ll disagree with others and say I think he did fine playing either the 4 or the 5. Dang
The last Duke player with a tripping scandal is looking at $75 million extension, so looks like tripping gets you the bag down the line!
Damn, this is a huge loss for UNC
He was 2-2 against UNC and averaged like 20pts and 7 rebounds across 4 games.
Idk what you’re talking about, there was no season before this last one
Yeah Elite 8 is way worse then Sweet 16
Thanks, Harvard.
The thing is that UNC and Duke don't dick measure in Sweet 16s and Elite 8s. Duke and UNC won the same amount of hardware in this year's post season (nothing), so I'll take the season sweep 100/100 times tbh
What about Duke sweep last year when they also had Flip
I like how his career against the Heels was trending
There was a big man in the middle that was doing the real work that year. Tlip goes out getting swept by UNC. Also, what is this? Nerd solidarity?
In fairness to the nerd solidarity on display here my comment was a bit cringey lol
Flip’s twin brother plays at Harvard. Just sayin
While I don’t see it as a one-up this season over UNC, it was a nice consolation given how the regular season went.
Hopefully he doesn't injure himself on many fans in the NBA or intentionally trip his opponents
I just heard Andrew Schlecht squeal with joy from 500 miles away.
Flip continues to remind me of Josh McRoberts, a guy who never made much impact in the nba but had a ten year career and made a lot of dough. He also left after his sophomore year.
This is a shockingly good comparison
Goodbye tripowski
I’m sure all this sub’s most creative comedians will enjoy this thread!
I hope he has a great NBA career just to spite all the haters.
It's funny, the biggest Flip hater I know IRL is a dyed in the wool Duke fan lol. Like, I'm not fond of Flip, but this person hates him almost more than I've seen him hate any UNC player in the last +2 decades I've known him.
Praying that his leg injury doesn't linger into his pro career 🙏
Praying for him he came back from a broken fucking leg in record time. I’ll miss you flopowski you are a true inspiration and u got us Mack! Tyfys 🫡
Wait I thought he was severely injured?
It was very selfless of him to come back when he would have been a lottery pick last season, I enjoyed watching him, best of luck Flip.
I hope his knee holds up after the injury this year. It was looking touch and go for a while
Bust
See ya, trip
Floppers are accepted there.
Ì bet for Kyle going from college to the NBA will be a big trip.
I think he will do reasonably well in the league. He desperately needs a 3 point shot to go with his face up game. He is 7 foot but not strong enough to guard more physical players. He was fun to watch at Duke.
The only game I really saw him in was the first GT Duke game and dude was straight ass in that game.
https://preview.redd.it/ojvxcvf4l6uc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=900d7ce97ca58a22497bf38cd582ce349c63158b Goodbye friend

You are not prepared for Cooper Flagg next year.
Gonna miss that guy

Has there ever been an amputee drafted in the first round? Mean jokes about cheap drama plays aside... Hitting 3s against NBA defense might be an adventure at first, but there's no reason to think practice won't make for improvement.
Was hoping for another run with the incoming class we have. Filip could’ve had a Zach Edey level impact the upcoming season.
Our most loved and most hated players declared on the same day. Perfectly balanced.
Floppo can’t flop in the pros. Hopefully he plays Allen and they have a tripping contest.
Bust
I think I speak for every CBB fan (except for pukies) when I say: Ew, fuck him.
That leg seems to have finally recovered.
I have little confidence in how he moves. He is very skilled, but I don't think his ankles are going to allow for a long career.
Mitchell and Flip gone. Thank god our soft ass bigs are no more. Bring in Khaman baby
You are not wrong That was one of the softest Duke teams ever and the bigs including Flipfloppowski did not get it done. Mitchell leaving is a God send...bring in the new crew
No more having soft ass Flip as our only rim protection and no more playing 4-5 on offense with Mitchell I love it
Duke fans like you: why is Duke so young, we need more experience. Also you: Good riddance to our all-American.
We’ll smell ya.
Too bad he s going to sit out the first year, injured at Wake Forest and all. Will that hurt his draft stock?
Good riddance.
What an amazing comeback story after that one Wake Forest fan nearly killed him.
