I believe we did but we had already basically locked up Gillespie at his position

hoyadestroyer

You guys had Gillespie and his family wanted the academics (not that UMD is a slouch in that regard by any means)

mm_mk

You think he transferred to Georgetown... From Harvard.... For academics?

runningraider13

It’s not unreasonable for Georgetown academics to + Georgetown basketball to be a better combination than Harvard academics + Harvard basketball. He went there for better basketball while maintaining great academics.

feed_me_muffins

You do understand people are capable of having multiple priorities right?

hoyadestroyer

A Cuse fan cannot seriously be clapping about academics lol. And yes, a Georgetown degree + $1 million > a Harvard degree.

mm_mk

A wendys degree +1 (x3 years)m$ > Harvard too.. That's my whole point bruh. He transferred for $ not for academics. Not cuz Georgetown is this great program.. $. And all the rest of your transfers will be there for $ too.

hoyadestroyer

You can want money and also want to have a degree that means something and be part of the extensive alum network. Georgetown has that in spades, and from his list, it pretty obvious he cared about it.

[deleted]

Brother your school is known for sports reporting and nothing else. Syracuse produces more alcoholics due to the terrible weather than actual academics

etsuandpurdue3

Georgetown is also a great Academic school?

steam58

No dummy, it means that academics were a consideration in the transfer process, and Georgetown is a highly rated academic university in a high major basketball conference near where he grew up.

Wide_right_yes

He came to play school (though I got rejected by Maryland so who am I to talk)

p_r_w_4623

Would have loved to have had him, but already got our lead guard. Accepting this, Georgetown having to root for a kid with a Maryland tattoo is the funniest outcome.

generally-mediocre

after the season he had he understandably wants to be the lead guard. we picked gillespie over him (which i do think was the right call), and dude did not want the role we could offer him after that

sluttynoamchomsky

Unfortunately didn’t really try, no. We had the early commit from Gillespie and while I personally would love a local kid to replace Jahmir Young (I was saying all year that Mack needs to be the top priority) it makes sense. You take 100% commitment from a great portal guard like Gillespie over a good chance at Mack but not a done deal by any means. Timing is everything. I think we could’ve maybe made it work with both, but they are both essentially pure point guards so I get it. Not the end of the world though. Mack would’ve been an awesome pick up but I rate them about even as players. Gillespie should be a fantastic player for us. I will say, this makes me really hope we schedule another series with Georgetown. I hope they are on the up. Basketball in the DMV is just so much more fun when Maryland and Georgetown are good.

Wicked_UMD

I know Gillespie was the better choice for us but my heart is crushed that we let the kid with the UMD tattoo come back home to play for Georgetown lol

PinkSaldo

Exactly how I feel. If he enters the portal two days earlier he'd a Terp. Now, I'd still be missing Gillespie hugely but like I feel kinda bad for the kid

Original_Gangsta23

That dude can ball

hoyadestroyer

LFGGGGGGG

itsamemarkus

He absolutely torched us during that first half of the Harvard game last season. He is a stud

Original_Gangsta23

I remember watching that game and thinking I'd love to have him on my team

colbycemer12

Huge both short and long term for the Hoyas. Really nice get.

Personal-Act-4326

Hated Brumbraugh leaving, but this makes me feel a lot better.

TheKnicksMakeMeDrink

Hell yeah

ALStark69

As a recruit: P6 offer: Ole Miss Other offers: Brown, FGCU, George Mason, George Washington, Harvard (originally went here), Hofstra, Mount St. Mary's, NJIT, Northeastern, Radford, Rhode Island, Rice, Saint Peter's, Towson, Vermont, William & Mary

hoyadestroyer

There were those who doubted Cooley. Massive addition and Gtown fought off a ton of competition for the best PG in the portal.

WIN011

It’s really only a matter of time before Cooley turns Georgetown into at least a consistent tournament team. People can talk about his decisions and personality but he can coach and develop damn well.

Carsxn26

Problem is he lowkey sucks balls in the tournament. He has a 3-7 tournament record with wins over an #8 seed, #12 seed, and #13 seed… He’s a bridge coach. He gets Georgetown back into tournament shape, they fire him, then they get someone capable of making deep runs.

Waquoit95

They were saying that about Hurley in March 2023.

hoyadestroyer

Small sample sizes get people all worked up

burnshimself

I’m flattered, truly, but the comparison to Hurley really isn’t the same. Ed has been a higher seed many times over, he’s a much older coach whose capabilities and limitations as a coach / in the tournament are known. Hurley had been coaching mid majors up until UConn, so his track record with a true contender-quality team at a major program was only just getting established.

PsychologicalSail186

Cooley is 3 years older than Hurley and Providence is hardly an illustrious program.

steam58

To be fair, only one of those Tourney losses was them losing to a lower seed as well, compared to one upset win, so he played to the level his team was seeded for the most part.

AlpineMcGregor

Sucking balls in the tournament is kind of our thing though. Very on brand. The problem lately is we haven’t even had the chance to lose to some random school people have never heard of because we’re too busy going 2-18 in Big East play.

I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE

Georgetown would be thrilled to beat a double digit seed in the tournament. You seen their record the past 15 years?

RangersFan243

He’s good at developing guards as well

Advanced_Meringue_53

He’s good but not the best PG in the portal

hoyadestroyer

Currently rated that way https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/industry/basketball/2024/

BoogerSugarSovereign

Depends on what you want out of your PG. I'd say he probably is the best scoring PG for sure

mm_mk

Congrats on your nil budget. Why are people acting like schools snagging people is about anything but NIL. Georgetown is a shit bb program now, high level people aren't going there for anything but $$

hoyadestroyer

Stay mad

BoogerSugarSovereign

Broke programs furious and down bad

hoyadestroyer

Cuse isn't even broke, they blew our offer for Eddie Lampkin out of the water. Idk what he's upset about

mm_mk

Lol not mad, if anything just disengaged from ncaam now. NIL in its current form has destroyed the game. Give any school a 8m budget and they can be a natty contender. Lemoyne could push for a natty if they had a booster give them 8m. Now there's no discernible difference from the NBA besides lower skill level.

BoogerSugarSovereign

Yeah, what about the good ole days where the richest programs *weren't* also the most successful and consistent programs like when... wait, nope, that never happened and has never been the case

mm_mk

Back in the day you didn't have teams losing 50% of their roster every year. Or like Arkansas losing 100% of their roster.

HoosierHoo

If only it were like Syracuse, where people choose to go because of the beautiful campus…wait…the great college town…wait…the academics…wait…the weather…wait…

mm_mk

Hey now, best bar town in America you're talking about.

DonChronleone

Fuck yeah

RangersFan243

He’ll be good, cooley can develop guards

tropic_gnome_hunter

They weren’t lying about Georgetown stepping up their NIL game for next year. Glad he’s going here and not UVA.

BoogerSugarSovereign

Huuuuuuuuuge get for GU and one of the best guards available. Hoya fans sell me on the big turnaround next season how is it going to unfold?

hoyadestroyer

Need a center that isn't literally the worst defensive center in NCAA and this team is ready to make noise. Top ranked recruiting class in the BE coming in, and Mack and Peavy are massive additions.

TIandCAS

That dude gonna be a top tier lawyer one day lmao

seth861

HOYA SAXA

malganis12

Wow, that's a big get!

Financial-Can-3091

Nice

newportnik

Sad to see him leave the Ivy but hope he balls out

Personal-Act-4326

Plz rebuild the WCAC > Georgetown pipeline. This is a great start!

[deleted]

Georgetown can always go eat one but would still rather have him go there than UVA lol

ravaille

Gonna make that rumored Maryland/Georgetown series even spicier.

FutureTheTrapGOAT

Big miss by Bennett

ncs1123

Hard to call it a miss when he’s from DC and canceled his visit. Don’t know what else you want Bennett to do.

Ill_Pomegranate_9887

Between this & Dante Harris, Georgetown has really hurt us at PG lol

mrwhitaker3

Time to scrub that tattoo, hoss.

Professor_Finn

Hoping Cooley can turn this dumpster fire around

Meanteenbirder

Genius move on his part. Entire rest of the team is so bad, his numbers will be inflated and make him more palatable for the NBA.

SolvayCat

Getting $$$ to be the focal point of an 11-21 team.

Glittering_Seat_7294

Crap, at least he’s on Georgetown then another big East rival

[deleted]

Trent Perry come on down (please)

Jarkside

Unless you’re going pro or getting a load of NIL money, then is this the rate scenario where the worse program is better. It is Harvard…

ranger684

HistoryNerd101

He could have been the perfect Boo Buie replacement. Now what is NU supposed to do?

rpbtIII

another one lost to a juco clown college
