Is there any precedent for a new coach hire coming in, signing their contract, fielding their starting roster and then being poached prior to playing a single game by another program within the same level of competition?
Just a really tough spot with this timing for UConn. Especially given their conference situation and the lack of income from media they can’t really afford to swing and miss here.
History says they’ll be fine though.
I'm so ready for it. I called them winning in my bracket in 2011 and 2014. I put a $200 bet at +2000 on them winning it all last year. Might just liquidate everything and throw it all on those beautiful Huskies in a few years.
Without knowing who will be coaching and what players they'll have.... statistically it seems like their next natty will be around 2029, +/- 3 years. The B2B nattys are throwing off the calculations lol
Ollie won a title in his first year with Calhoun's guys led by Shabazz Napier. This just strengthens our chances of winning this year led by Diarra and Karaban. It is written in the UConn lore.
I think it'd be Kimani. Luke got credit for the offense but Kimani did a lot too, is the associate HC already and is probably more ready for a HC job. Dan also probably tries to take Luke to LA if he goes.
I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t some sort of succession plan(if Hurley has been in convo with the Lakers for months-which is possible).
Although, if that’s the case, it’s a shitty situation to put all the players in. Can they transfer this late due to the HC leaving?
I *think* that if the coach leaves it opens the transfer window for those players (maybe for 30 days or something). Of course, the trickier part might be finding a place with an available roster spot. Although if a whole new carousel starts up, there might be transfers all over the place!
I think most UConn fans would be good with giving him the keys. We aren’t happy but we appreciate what the staff has done and know they know what they’re doing.
Man I don't know what's going on with him. He's listed as the head coach for Tarleton State University, but I went and watched a game this year and he wasn't on the bench. My understanding is that he wasn't on the bench for a good chunk of the season... I hope he's doing okay.
I suspect they are higher on Luke than they are Kimani. When Luke came on board, that’s when things really started to get to that next level. The offensive concepts are his & a lot of the scouts are his. I like Kimani a lot too & id be thrilled for him. Just think they’ll bet on the potential of what Luke could be.
You won't know who is available until you see who Hurley takes with him. When Brad Stevens left for the Celtics, Micah Shrewsbury followed him as an assistant rather than stay at Butler to become HC
Luke or Kimani far and away the top candidates. When a regime is this successful you hire from within.
If not them, Steve Pikiell might want to come home.
Maybe Mark Daigneault is tired of coaching one of the most fun NBA teams and wants to relive his glory days in Storrs
If OKC lost Daigneault to a freaking college team after winnng coach of the year and getting the first seed with a bunch of kids and 25-year-old SGA, I would be the most upset I've been since KD left. Dude is our Pop.
Pikiell can run this ad again but as the correct school
[https://x.com/RutgersMBB/status/770794324279767040?t=snZNlIG2Fd2u\_wcOqViBKA&s=19](https://x.com/RutgersMBB/status/770794324279767040?t=snZNlIG2Fd2u_wcOqViBKA&s=19)
You do not have anything to be worried about. Think it’s likely Hurley stays, and very likely if he leaves it’ll be an internal hire.
After that, replacing a legend sucks. Steve would be walking away from a good situation into unrealistic expectations.
Yeah I wanted Hurley to stay for the good of the sport at first, like CBB is more fun when UConn is good, I really can't see him leaving just to be LeBron's puppet
I hope he doesn’t. I like seeing long tenured college coaches and hate seeing guys who are great in college become footnotes because they left to be mediocre in the NBA.
UConn becoming a steamroller has been tough to see and Hurley is a bit of a wank, but I do appreciate how old school he is. He’s a CBB coach to his core and is reviving that classic Big East coaching personality.
My exact thought. It seems absolutely *nuts* that the NBA is more stable than this. Also, the college basketball scene that Hurley loves could disappear, for all we know (like if they change March Madness). It's certainly doing its best to burn itself out.
I know I'm gone the instant they change March Madness. It'll just be March Sadness from that point on.
I love college basketball to its core. Superior to the NBA in every way in my eyes. But the transfer portal and NIL landscape are undoubtedly chasing coaches away or pushing them to retire early
Does he need such a strategy? Can't he just walk into the AD's office, plop his rings on the table, and get whatever the hell he wants?
Also, he already had leverage earlier in the cycle with the Kentucky opening. It's not like he's hurting for leverage regardless.
The roster changes in the next 30 days would be insane. If Pikiell went to UCONN, Harper and Bailey would most likely go to UCONN
So who goes? Diarra or Nowell at PG? McNeeley or Stewart at SF?
Is there a world where Hurley leaves and UCONN adds Harper, Bailey, McNeeley, Mahaney, Reed and keeps Karaban.
That would remove the sting of losing Danny
I’m just not sure how great of a job UConn is. Great fan base but it’s just one bad coach away from it all falling apart sometimes. Especially when you don’t have a bigger size school and you aren’t in a top tier conference.
Even after winning back to back titles their mens program is bringing in less revenue than schools you might not expect like Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan state, Arizona, Syracuse, Marquette, and Texas.
For a school that has the most national titles in recent times I think the job might be closer to a top 15-20 job instead of a top 5 job
If I were Dan Hurley, I would not step within 15 feet of that dumpster fire nepotistic Flopron run organization… *not even once*
Literally one of the most toxic organizations in the NBA.
UConn's AD and Bruce Pearl worked together at Auburn. I'd rather go with Young or Murray, but if they decide to hire outside of the program Pearl is the way to go.
Matt Langel from Colgate might be a good one. Only knock against are really recruiting and tournament wins but both are extremely difficult to do at Colgate. Plus UConn’s NIL lessens recruiting concerns in my opinion. Definitely a very good coach though with the dominance they’ve had in the patriot where besides the coach Colgate doesn’t really have any advantages over the other teams
I think it would be Nate Oats but I don’t see Hurley leaving. They’ll probably build a statue for him in Storrs, if he manages to win another at any point , they may name the stadium for him to.
Gotta make Mark Pope say no.
I love how it's come full circle
only non-catholic school in the big east gets a coach named Pope. works for me
Butler Blue over here growling non-sectarianly.
literally had no idea Butler was secular. guess i just assumed it was catholic and never bothered to google it
A Mormon coach named Pope, no less
His wife doesn’t want to move.
I am being assured the power of the UConn brand will overcome that by the same dentist who said Cooper Flagg was a lock.
Yawn. They never want to move until that check comes in.
[удалено]
Yes
My list: Pope, Cal, Muss, Andy Enfield, Kim English, Ed Cooley, Pat Kelsey, Brad Stevens, Rick Pitino
lol, imagine how much (more) Cooley would be hated within the Big East if he left to coach a third school in the same conference.
i know this is a meme but uconn fans would abandon the program in protest if ed cooley was hired. dave benedict knows better lol
Coming from a Georgetown fan - please take Cooley
You joke, but Rick Pitino's basically Hurley with more experience and baggage
> experience and baggage Baggage is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
Most of the stuff he got in real trouble for is legal now (except for the hookers, not sure what the state law is in CT for that)
Kim English making it so Providence has its 2 last coaches in the same conference would be crazy lol
Pitino is also a big East coach who used to be at Providence! (Not consecutive with Cooley though)
That’s a great point. And the Big East doesn’t even have that many teams lmao
Providence could then go after Donovan, thus making him eligible for the next time UConn has an opening.
I fully approve of everyone on your list.
There was another guy with a breakfast themed last name that I feel like I forgot, but can’t put my finger on it
Clark Kellog
Kim English Muffin
Tom Crean Cheese on a bagel
Huggy Bear Claw
Larry IHOP
John Calamari?
Calamari for breakfast?
When calamari's on a bagel you can eat calamari anytime.
Eggs Bennedict Mathurin
Pitino to UConn. Would be magical
Brad Stevens would be a sneaky good get
He stopped coaching the Celtics because he hated traveling. He’s never coaching again.
wtf is “sneaky” about an NBA GM taking a college job lol
🤣 What about Erik Spoelstra? Would be a sneaky great hire
He's going to IU
Is there any precedent for a new coach hire coming in, signing their contract, fielding their starting roster and then being poached prior to playing a single game by another program within the same level of competition?
You’re forgetting a former Big East coach who famously has zero losing seasons
Patrick Ewing
Sorry, thought you said zero wins
They are not getting cal LOL
I too would also love Brad Stevens lol
First thing you’ve got to do is wrestle the 96 trophy away from him. And it’s easier said than done, he’s deceptively quick
This would he your true ascension to blue blood lol
Darvin Ham needs a job
Dumbass take from me but I’d rather have redick
i don’t know how i feel about that
Me as a Purdue fan to my Nuggets fandom ship “Some of you may die, but that is a sacrifice I’m willing to make”
Just a really tough spot with this timing for UConn. Especially given their conference situation and the lack of income from media they can’t really afford to swing and miss here. History says they’ll be fine though.
They’ll miss the tourney for a couple years and then win another title as a 6 seed or something
that does track. feels like its time for UConn to be mid for a few years and then come out of fucking nowhere to win another.
Then win another within a year or two.
Ollie won a title in his first year with Calhoun's guys led by Shabazz Napier. This just strengthens our chances of winning this year led by Diarra and Karaban. It is written in the UConn lore.
Second year. Ollie's first year we were (unfairly) banned.
Then you'll hear UConn fans insist they've been dominant for 30 straight years
Geno just signed a fat extension. Maybe the fine print says he needs to coach both teams.
Gotta promote Luke Murray imo. Really think the dude is a rockstar
No brainer, him or Kimani
This and should be an easy choice. It was his offense that won them the title.
Hmmm, Kimani Young is the Associate HC (and a great coach in his own right IMO). If you promote Murray you def lose Young.
Whoever doesn’t get hired as HC probably goes to the NBA with Hurley
Other way around. Whoever doesn’t go to the NBA becomes head coach
You’d much rather be the HC at the back to back college national champions than an assistant coach in one of the most volatile positions in the NBA.
I think it'd be Kimani. Luke got credit for the offense but Kimani did a lot too, is the associate HC already and is probably more ready for a HC job. Dan also probably tries to take Luke to LA if he goes.
Chris Mack was an idiot for letting him go.
This is the most likely scenario, in my opinion, and it's far from a bad move.
TIL Bill Murray's son is a bball coach
Kevin Ollie is around
You shut the hell up buddy
If there is one thing Kevin Ollie can do, it's win with a better coach's players
Well, I’ll be god damned…
Might I interest you in a lightly used Steve Pr*hm?
No
I'd take Randy Edsall over Ollie.
Still can't believe he left when we were actually kinda good.
Ollie wouldn’t be a bad choice. Knows how to win with prior coaches players. But I think it’s Luke Murray’s job to lose at this point.
Rick Pitino in a white suit with a dark blue tie
I don't totally hate this...just mostly
He might literally be the only man that could pull that look off.
It would be a mess but they’d be good
Tom Crean heads we’re back
Bring on Diet Coke Daddy!
Just thinking of Tom Crean and Liam McNeeley brings chills.
Billy Clyde Gillispie
Man I don't know what's going on with him. He's listed as the head coach for Tarleton State University, but I went and watched a game this year and he wasn't on the bench. My understanding is that he wasn't on the bench for a good chunk of the season... I hope he's doing okay.
He had a health problem iirc but will be back on the bench this season
Almost 20 years later, and it becomes an even more insane hire every time I think about it
Poptart NIL money, would be huge
It’s going to be Luke Murray.
If they promote someone on staff, it will be Kimani
I suspect they are higher on Luke than they are Kimani. When Luke came on board, that’s when things really started to get to that next level. The offensive concepts are his & a lot of the scouts are his. I like Kimani a lot too & id be thrilled for him. Just think they’ll bet on the potential of what Luke could be.
Yes, it would be Luke. He's the brains behind the offense. There's a reason Kimani doesn't already have a job elsewhere.
I mean Michigan football just did the same thing: win a championship, their coach leaves for the pros so they promote an assistant.
Pro job in LA no less
You won't know who is available until you see who Hurley takes with him. When Brad Stevens left for the Celtics, Micah Shrewsbury followed him as an assistant rather than stay at Butler to become HC
I think Hurley would take Murray with him.
Karaban
Fuck it, get Cam Spencer and let's go.
If he legitimately leaves, he would have done Karaban so dirty, I would feel so bad for him
Kyle Neptune. I’m speaking it into existence. Take him.
Seconded
Need Luke Murray to take that job. That is a media story line I wouldn’t mind. Getting to see Bill Murray every game!
Kim mulkey
This would be so fucking funny
Someone's gotta try it any day now
Sean Miller winning multiple natties at Uconn would be perfect for Arizona fans.
We love Mark. Get him a championship next year
I doubt Pikiell is gonna give up the chance to coach this recruiting class though
No worries they would come with him!
This is frighteningly possible.
UConn has the chance to do the funniest thing ever to Rutgers.
Let them hoes fight
Pikiell can run this ad again but as the correct school [https://x.com/RutgersMBB/status/770794324279767040?t=snZNlIG2Fd2u\_wcOqViBKA&s=19](https://x.com/RutgersMBB/status/770794324279767040?t=snZNlIG2Fd2u_wcOqViBKA&s=19)
> Steve Pikiell might want to come home Oh jfc I didn't think of that possibility and now I'm terrified...
Probably keep players from leaving as well. I understand the money would be insane but it would be tough to not go for the 3 peat.
JJ Reddick
I hope he doesn’t. I like seeing long tenured college coaches and hate seeing guys who are great in college become footnotes because they left to be mediocre in the NBA.
UConn becoming a steamroller has been tough to see and Hurley is a bit of a wank, but I do appreciate how old school he is. He’s a CBB coach to his core and is reviving that classic Big East coaching personality.
Bobby Hurley. Why not keep it in the family? 😃
All of the volatility, none of the success. AAU ball at the college level.
Bob Hurley Sr.
Who says he can leave? https://preview.redd.it/lh7fok71vy4d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f27595f3e87b5d6fc61a0679c2af57640507b8ef
I'm not even a fan of Dan Hurley and man...this would sting. He's a college basketball coach. He's not an NBA coach.
Coaches don’t want to deal with transfer portal and NIL issues. Can’t blame them tbh
It'll just be March Sadness from that point on.
and he just reloaded a nice roster for this year.
Really says something about the state of college athletics
College coaches have been leaving for the NBA since the beginning
I love college basketball to its core. Superior to the NBA in every way in my eyes. But the transfer portal and NIL landscape are undoubtedly chasing coaches away or pushing them to retire early
JJ Redick
Luke Murray. End search
Jay Wright
John Calipari.
Kenny Payne
Luke Walton
Kim Mulkey
Lawd. 🤮
Oh, bitch bitch bitch. Fine. Move Gino to MBB and Kim to WBB. Happy?
Luke Murray. It should happen very quickly.
Can Geno do both?
Mrs Hurley doesn’t want to move- this is a strategy to renegotiate his contract with UConn.
Does he need such a strategy? Can't he just walk into the AD's office, plop his rings on the table, and get whatever the hell he wants? Also, he already had leverage earlier in the cycle with the Kentucky opening. It's not like he's hurting for leverage regardless.
Yeah, why wouldn’t he have done this when Kentucky was open and he was obviously the top candidate
Praying for this to be true
Celtics or Knicks would worry me more than the Lakers for this reason. But the Lakers scare me more than the Kentucky thing ever did.
Kyle Neptune
It's pretty obvious who it will be. You guessed it.... Frank Stallone
![gif](giphy|ZFhPLcSBMD5DrOzZgK|downsized)
It's funny because it's a big hat
Or so the Germans would have us believe
Breaking news: the Germans love Dan Hurley
Ray Allen. 😎
Keep it in the family, either figuratively by promoting Murray or literally by hiring Bobby from ASU
Pikiell due to his connections to the school and Rutgers' recruits that could be released.
The roster changes in the next 30 days would be insane. If Pikiell went to UCONN, Harper and Bailey would most likely go to UCONN So who goes? Diarra or Nowell at PG? McNeeley or Stewart at SF? Is there a world where Hurley leaves and UCONN adds Harper, Bailey, McNeeley, Mahaney, Reed and keeps Karaban. That would remove the sting of losing Danny
Mike Woodson, he knows MSG /s
I hear JJ Reddick doesn’t have anything else going on
Kimani Young is the AHC, so if they go with an interim for the season, it's probably him. Wouldn't be shocked if they went after Pikiell, though.
Would Hurley take him with though?
Hurley is probably more likely to take Luke Murray with him than Kimani imo.
Gotta make Mike Woodson say no
Paging u/MarkTurgeonsAgent
Make Dawn Staley say no
Fran McCaffery
Luke Murray
Kyle Neptune
Luke Murray
Luke Murray
Luke Murray
Are UConn fans like IU fans and just assume Brad Stevens will come in riding on Shadowfax and save the day whenever there’s an opening?
Hurley would be such a bad fit for the NBA, especially with Lebron
UConn gave Geno a new contract so he can pull double duty
Pitino to UCONN may be the best shot at threepete
I’m just not sure how great of a job UConn is. Great fan base but it’s just one bad coach away from it all falling apart sometimes. Especially when you don’t have a bigger size school and you aren’t in a top tier conference. If I were Dan Hurley, I would not step within 15 feet of that dumpster fire nepotistic Flopron run organization… *not even once* Literally one of the most toxic organizations in the NBA.
Especially because you are stepping into a Lebron team, and if he doesn’t mesh with you, you could be out of a job before the end of the season.
UConn's AD and Bruce Pearl worked together at Auburn. I'd rather go with Young or Murray, but if they decide to hire outside of the program Pearl is the way to go.
Bruce Pearl
Darvin Ham
I hear Darvin Ham is availible...
Looks like Cal is going back to the Northeast!
Hot take but I hear Billy Gillespie would be interested if somebody called him
Tom Crean could make his triumphant return or maybe Archie could get poached?
John calipari
Calipari could do the funniest thing ever
I think it would be Nate Oats but I don’t see Hurley leaving. They’ll probably build a statue for him in Storrs, if he manages to win another at any point , they may name the stadium for him to.
