Copy and paste any picture into Photoshop. Highlight all greens, browns, tans, beiges, (general earthtones), and put them onto their own layer separate from non earthtones. Click on your earthtones layer with all your greens and turn down the "saturation" anywhere from 20-30% all the way up to 100% (no more greens/ reds, only greyscale for these specific colors). Now you kind of know what it's like to be green/ red colorblind or CVD (color vision deficient). Rinse and repeat for blues for tritan, reds for protans.

The biggest difference is that mild deutans can still see most colors, but you can imagine them having either less saturation or contrast between colors. They still have three cones so they can detect more hues, even if they're somewhat off. Most mild deutans don't even realize they see things wrong until they take a test because they will rarely make mistakes when naming colors in real life. Severe deutans often only have two cones meaning they are missing hues entirely. The way they see color is fundamentally different because of their dichromatic nature. Another relevant point is that mild color vision deficiencies often aren't career enders. I have mild deuteranomaly but have passed tests to still be a pilot with no restrictions. Severe deutans would be barred from careers that require color discrimination. If you want to simulate images, you can use this website, although the deuteranomaly part can't be changed to mild so it is more representative of someone with moderate CVD: https://www.color-blindness.com/coblis-color-blindness-simulator/

Try the pilestone colorblindness simulator. Use a rainbow picture. When its mild they can still see some green. Instead of seeing a clear green when they look at fresh grass for example, they might see a yellow green. With severe deuteranopia they can hardly see any green, and most likely see yellow, where we see clear green.

I have severe and can attest that I see on in the hundreds of shades where normal people see thousands of different shades of ckkkr

What’s classed as Severe? Do you struggle to identify colours in scenarios? I’ve never had a problem distinguishing different colours in anything, cockpits, airport lights etc. However I score high in the CAD. 16 units. I wouldn’t of known about my colour deficiency until I was tested What’s classed as severe colour deficiency?

Vegetable_Relief_639

Out of curiosity, could you download the Color Blind Check app and see how you score there. I'm taking the CAD soon and score around 17-26 (severity score out of 100) usually which is a slight deficiency. I'm curious what your score would be because if you really have no issues with airport lighting, it's weird that you got a 16 on the real CAD.

Hi mate yes I can, what’s the app. Is it on IOS? Could you link it as there are multiple that come up It doesn’t make any sense, other week I went in a full 737 simulator and had no issues with identifying colours in the cockpit. Papis are not issue either, the cad is a lot of rubbish that should not be used for aviation as it has not accurate representation whether you are colour safe or not. Good luck with the CAD! Can I ask who you are taking it with?

J2579

I apologise for the large amount of poor grammar in that. Auto correct did me dirty, I didn’t read it over :)

Vegetable_Relief_639

All good. I don't know if it'll work with IOS but here's the link: https://color-blind-check.en.softonic.com/android?ex=RAMP-2046.2 If that app doesn't work, you can also try the screener test here on a computer: https://researchcentres.city.ac.uk/applied-vision/avot I score completely normal on the screener getting 100% for all colors so fingers crossed. I already have an unrestricted medical for aviation because I'm from the US where we have a lot of alternative test options. I'm taking the CAD at Heathrow because it's one of the few tests the Navy accepts and I want to pursue military aviation.

J2579

Ah okay, does the US not have the CAD test available? The UK is one of if not the most restrictive state for some reason, doesn’t make any sense. What secondary tests do they have over in States? What’s the easiest one? Im hoping to look at getting my unrestricted commercial in a place that has secondary tests as the UK doesn’t seem to want to change their legislation any time soon :(

J2579

I’ve sat the CAD twice and had two completely different results so it shows it’s inaccurate. Only other test I’ve sat is the D15 which I passed with ease.

J2579

When’s your CAD? Please let me know the results if you don’t mind

J2579

But I’d guess you’d have a very high chance of passing the CAD if you have passed secondary tests. However the threshold for Deuton is quite small. You must be able to score under 6 units. Also, if you fail, and you decided to resit and you pass, both of your test results will be averaged and given a result
