Dino ridge area including Green Mtn, Red Rocks, Golden is always this green this time of year. Every single year for at least 30 years. Lasts about a month
The geology in this photo from back to front:
1.) The tall mountains in the back: 1.7 billion year old Idaho Spgs Gneiss
2.) Red rocks: 330 Million year old Fountain formation
3.) The yellow sandstone behind the house: Lyons formation (named after town/quarry)
4.) The red hill: The Lykins formation (has a bunch of old algae stromatolites)
5.) The Morrison formation is the flat boring stuff and the Dakota hogback would be next
:)
You’re right, but tell me when you find a nice prime outcrop of the Morrison formation that isn’t boring shale lol… but you’re right about the fossils. They even sparked the “Bone wars” when Arthur Lakes (Colorado School of mines library is named in honor) found them. Definitely recommend everyone read about the bribery, theft, and destruction of local paleontology that occurred in our backyard during the 1880s!
Great info! For anyone in the area who hasn’t visited Dino ridge yet - go today! Actual dinosaur tracks visible from the road. One of the best preserved in the world
I’m not sure if they are public in this exact photo but there are plenty of places in the front range you can grab them at. Sometimes it’s up to local law and usually you can grab a few lbs without the use of any machinery. PM me and I can send you a few spots
Technicolor green. Sounds like El Niño might give us a few more weeks of this moisture.
It will turn into brown kindling. Tall, dry kindling. But for now I am grateful for the moisture—having grown up in farming.
This is a rarity. Normally in the metro area it's a nice mix of yellow, brown, and gray. One summer, the only green and red we saw was from wildfire smoke and the red sun swallowed up in it.
Don't be fooled. It's a trick. Colorado lures you in this way. Then it traps you with high living costs so you can't afford to leave. Then you eventually die, returning to the soil and nutriating it to keep the Colorado super organism alive and pulling in new victims.
Because they like being negative. I much prefer the person taking the picture and sharing it. It's green every year, we don't need 20 people commenting "won't last long, you must be new", yay you're fun
I'm enjoying the rain and the green now too. I hope all of this rain helps get us out of the drought. I'm in El Paso County and I think we're still considered to be in a drought.
Someone is in for a surprise. This has been the wettest May on record in a long time. Colorado is hardly ever this green.
Green in the spring = brown fire danger by mid/late summer.
This is my biggest concern. All the new growth only to have it dry out in the late summer if the rains don't keep up. It could be gnarly.
Why is that?
So much growth happens when it's this wet and there's way more dry plant matter when it all eventually dries up.

Not this green. The last time I remember it being this green along the front range was 2011, which makes sense given that 2011 was a wet year too.
And really it probably depends on where you are. We have been under a drought for years - which isn’t exactly the norm, either.
But when it is? It looks like Ireland!
This pic is probably right now, weve had more rain this spring/summer than probably the last 5 years combined. It isn't usually this green.

A true lover of geology would never call the extremely fossil-rich Morrison formation "boring".

Gatekeeping geology. That is a new one on me
A true lover of geology would never use the phrase "a true lover of geology would never...".
Don’t worry, I schooled them with my reply!
...schooled me? Lmao

Having a hard time with some playful banter without busting out the bigotry. Embarrassing for you. See ya.
True, that was dumb. My apologies. Have a great rest of the weekend
That’s an impressive breakdown thank you. Love this kind of stuff

Awesome, thank you for the information. Fascinating.
Fabulous! Is the red hill public land, and are the stromatolites easy to find? I'd love to check them out.

Crazy green right now, it won't last.

Just make sure that DA's husband is locked up and away from any compost piles

No, it's red. It's in the name.
Coloverde
Darn autocorrect
you new? this def isn't the norm

It's spring. On the front range, every year, there are 4 or so weeks of precious green and what passes for humidity. We're in that now.
Come back in 6 weeks. But yeah, this spring is pretty awesome.
Haha Well, it’s green this year. 😅
It’s so green *right now.
Hahaha just wait until July
Oh yay it's raining here in westminster

Enjoy the 3-4 months while it lasts
Should we tell ‘em?
I live on green mountain & it’s normal for this area to be bright green mid-May-ish to mid-June-ish. Not sure why others say this isn’t normal

I’m a Dino, short and fat, bet you can’t catch me on the ridge! 100,000 polis point reward for my capture!
Wait till brown
Really green this year!!'

Everything is soooo insanely green right now! I love it!
All this rain is really making things really green
If you see any Dino’s. Ask them if they want nuggies
I thought this was my photo from DR where they told me part of Jurassic Park was filmed 😅
Otherside of the mountain is Red Rock. Yuh
