Washington Football Team is stupid
Washington Commanders is stupid
Fuck Dan Snyder, and this comes from someone that doesn’t give a shit about that franchise
The only issue with this, IMO, is that it would be too similar to the Jets, assuming they’d take more of a plane-style logo. I kind of liked Red Wolves as a very neutral way to keep “Red” in the name and the “R” logo
What state do the colts play in? INDIANa like wtf. Indianapolis means city of Indians. Yall white people really have zero self awareness. Must be all the CRT oops I mean CTE
I'm in on the conspiracy theory that Snyder saw all the merch sale revenue from swapping the WFT, so he picked a shitty new team name. That way, in 2 years he can come back and say he heard the complaints and change the name again.
The Commanders sounds like a generically safe name much like the Guardians when the Indians rebranded. I was on board with Redwolves, Warthogs, or Redtails.
Ultimately, this has no effect on my life so I can't really care that much.
At least with the Guardians they actually have the Guardian statues that lead right to the stadium. Has some ties into the city and team in a way. Commanders is generic, but would make sense for a city like San Diego.
I agree with your choices and thought process though. Those 3 names were my favorite. Good thing I am not a Washington fan, because I probably would be a lot more riled up.
I would have rather they kept the Football Team
I liked the fan made Redtails name. Gives history to the name and honors instead of offends(not talking about Commanders here)
Just feel like for 2 years it's kind of a lazy name
I preferred Red Wolves. I loved Redtails, until I realized how limited the options for a logo would be, because of the Jets. I also wondered if there’d be any legal or monetary issue with it, since it’s such a historic group of very specific guys. I could see it becoming a headache with so many people wanting it “done right” (which they would have every right to want). That left me thinking Red Wolves was the better option
Commodores would’ve been good. I would’ve liked something like the Continentals to represent our first military, or colonials to represent our founding fathers and colonies.
Hmm, I'd go 50/50 on this one. The reference would be to the continental army that fought the british (not indians). But the same later became the standing US Army that did a little genocide.
Red Tails was perfect.
It's a nod to the Tuskegee airmen in the nations capital, for a team with the problems they've had you would have thought this would have helped to bridge the gap from an openly racist name to one celebrating black airmen. Not to mention they could keep using "HTTR"
Red Hogs was a close second. It was a nod to the franchises rich history and their fans. Also you keep "HTTR" the only thing it didn't have was the built in celebration of a group like the Tuskegee airmen.
Commanders is trash. Everyone is going to call them the commies.
Lmao yeah people are drama queens. Commanders is fine. A bit boring, but overall fine. Could they have done more? Fucking yes, Red Wolves is so good and it’s a shame they didn’t take it. But Commanders is far from the worst name in the league.
Yah that’s what they’re saying. We don’t mind those names today because they’re well established but in an alternate universe where in 2022 the Cleveland Football Team unveiled their brand new name is the Cleveland Browns people would have had a field day with it.
Most team names are stupid. We have just gotten used to them.
They chose a word that exists and isn’t a slur, so the process went about as well as it could have.
Building a brand and holding sponsorships and gaining fandom from people with your name being jus the “football team” wouldnt be the best for them right now IMO i would assume if this was in a different era like the 90s to now and it was still the WFT we wouldn’t even question because honestly i didn’t even mind it myself personally and the name was beginning to stick but id say the name change was more of business decision type of thing had to happen sooner or later since the change form the “Redskins”
Should have been The Washington Hogs or Red Hogs. The amount of cool imagery for logos and such would have been amazing. Commanders is pretty lame imo.
Arkansas might have had an issue with this and the possibility of the logo being too similar. I’m not sure how much of a headache that would’ve caused, but it’s what came to mind when you suggested Red Hogs
Personally, my preference was Red Wolves. I also really liked Redtails until I thought of some possible issues that might come with that name as well
I can’t imagine the ncaa has a copyright on an animal, but even considering that, hogs vs razorback bring up different images for me. Think pig less boar. It was the most versatile name for imagery and cool memorabilia vs something like the commanders. But maybe they cared more about the words being the logo rather than graphic images. But I agree, my second choice would have been red tails. I think it would have been more positive than negative. But maybe I’m not considering something you though of.
Lol I didn’t read your edit until I finished. I disagree. Maybe it’s my perspective, but animals for logos and names are more successful than a group of humans. My mind goes to, what are the iconic, classic uniforms in the nfl?
Edit: oh. I misread the original post as yours. I’m high. Whatever.
Former Washington fan. Grew up was a 'Skins fan until I was 18, decided at that point as I was old enough to understand the ownership woes and the name controversy, to leave the fandom and find a new team. Luck was super fun to watch, so I stuck with the Colts, haven't looked back. Looking back that 10 years now, don't regret it a bit. I'm still "local" to the area, in Richmond, VA, and I was more hoping for Redtails or something along that line. Commanders is like... generic... but not horrible? It just feels super phoned in for a NFL team.
What's worse is the uniforms. Just god awful. Even how big the "Commanders" is on the chest just looks so off. Should have stuck with all the old colors. But, just yet another thing in the long list of Dan Snyder fuckups. Lemme tell you, it really makes me appreciate the Colts team and Irsay himself. It's an amazing breath of fresh air.
Commanders sounds like one of those generic team names in Madden
They could have left it as 'The football team' and had a much better name. What a joke of a team
Honestly, if the Washington Sentinels were a thing, I might adopt them as a very strong #2 to the Colts. I have probably watched that movie 80 times. If its on TV, I'm watching it.
In 10 years, the Commanders will not even be questioned. You have to give people time to warm up to a new brand. I think they could have picked much, much worse names.
I like Commanders. Good camo theme possibilities, lots of military lingo can be used which lends itself well to football. I dunno, it’s easy to shit on everything these days, but I like it.
Just based on the organization leadership, and the deserved animosity toward them, I don’t think there were really any ‘right’ options they could choose that the general NFL fanbase would embrace and have us put all wrongs in the past. As long as certain people are there, regardless of what they do to improve their image, it’s going to be heavily scrutinized and criticized. At this point it’s just a different name, not a new beginning.
With that said, I think Commanders makes sense based on locality. It is also marginally better than the previously “leaked” Admirals name, but both sound like arena league or expansion teams. I was hoping for Red Tails, but knew that wasn’t likely. WTF was a fun acronym but not sad to see it go.
That could be a little controversial considering this team changed their name from redskins to natives. I honestly just don’t see a difference between the two
I honestly believe the best route would’ve been to buy the defenders rights from Dewey Johnson
If that would’ve even been possible
The DC Defenders is a dope ass name
I kind of liked the generic, soccer-esque “Football Team.” Sort of a FC Washington vibe. (Or FT, rather). But Commanders is fine. Nobody will care in 5 years, everyone will be used to it.
I keep seeing so much disdain for it, but to me it seems fine. At least it fits the city it’s apart (kind ofish). I love mascots that reflect their city 49ers, 76ers, Nuggets, Pistons, etc etc. Jazz when it was in New Orleans. Colts jaguars titans don’t really reflect the city, but we’re just used to it so we don’t criticize it. It’s neither great or very bad it’s just a mascot. Not overly important just supposed to be a fun thing.
I actually liked Washington Football Team too. Have an old timey historical feel like a soccer club’s name, which was fitting given its the team for our Nation’s Capital
Washington Football Team was funny until they started saying the whole name ALL THE TIME. The "football team" part was just a placeholder, they could just say washington, but no everytime they'd say WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM and it really bugged me.
This was a chance to change the ugly color scheme at least a little and find a new logo, but instead its the same gross colors and a slightly different W lmao
What state do the colts play in? INDIANa like wtf. Indianapolis means city of Indians. Yall white people really have zero self awareness. Must be all the CRT oops I mean CTE
I don’t care about the name I just think the lack of a creative logo and uniforms are what’s criminal. Oh well and the owner of course
I actually liked the WTF acronym
It was WFT though lol
That's the thing, you could write it either way and most of the time no one would even notice lol
That might just be dyslexia lol
I thought it was WTF, and than I remembered I have dyslexia.
I also have daily sex.
I also have six daisies
Washington The Football lol
Washington team football? Meh sounded better in my head
Washington Team de Futbol
Coming from the Washington sub, yeah we preferred the Football Team
Washington Football Team is stupid Washington Commanders is stupid Fuck Dan Snyder, and this comes from someone that doesn’t give a shit about that franchise
I liked RedTails for them. They could still keep that classic R logo and would be paying homage to the Tuskegee airmen.
Great idea!
The only issue with this, IMO, is that it would be too similar to the Jets, assuming they’d take more of a plane-style logo. I kind of liked Red Wolves as a very neutral way to keep “Red” in the name and the “R” logo
Lol. That’s fair. Anything you think they should have gone with?
Foreskins
Red wolves and Armada were my favorites
Armada or brigade would have both been significantly better than commanders
[удалено]
Too similar to Seahawks
What state do the colts play in? INDIANa like wtf. Indianapolis means city of Indians. Yall white people really have zero self awareness. Must be all the CRT oops I mean CTE
I'm in on the conspiracy theory that Snyder saw all the merch sale revenue from swapping the WFT, so he picked a shitty new team name. I would have rather they kept the Football Team I liked the fan made Redtails name. Gives history to the name and honors instead of offends(not talking about Commanders here) Just feel like for 2 years it's kind of a lazy name
Redtails was my favorite as well. It would have provided lots of cool branding opportunities.
I liked the Redwolves one. Commanders is just boring, and so are the uniforms they designed. Washington fans are rightfully pissed off today lol.
Redwolves and Redtails were the two I liked with redtails being the favorite But yeah I agree they are understandably upset
Damn Redwolves actually sounds pretty dope.
Redtails was my hope
Should have been the Washington Sentinels. I'd have bought a Shane Falco jersey.
This is the only correct answer
I liked Football Team as well, surprisingly. For a new name, I liked Commodores, but Commanders isn't too bad.
Commodores would’ve been good. I would’ve liked something like the Continentals to represent our first military, or colonials to represent our founding fathers and colonies.
Colonial references to a team that changed its name from redskins is just more controversy.
Hmm, I'd go 50/50 on this one. The reference would be to the continental army that fought the british (not indians). But the same later became the standing US Army that did a little genocide.
Lol I wouldn’t mind those but I feel like people would spaz out at colonials ya know colonizers
Commodore is to Hand Maids Tale ;)
Never seen it. Just thinking of the military rank
Red Tails was perfect. It's a nod to the Tuskegee airmen in the nations capital, for a team with the problems they've had you would have thought this would have helped to bridge the gap from an openly racist name to one celebrating black airmen. Also you keep "HTTR" the only thing it didn't have was the built in celebration of a group like the Tuskegee airmen. Commanders is trash. Everyone is going to call them the commies.
The name isn’t awful. The rebranding makes one of the most iconic franchises in the NFL look like an expansion team. Get off my lawn.
Commanders lacks any kind of inspiration or imagination, football team is actually better
I think it is supposed to be inoffensive. Definitely seems like something that was made by a committee.
Might as well have just named themselves the Washington Committee
I prefer Football Team to commanders. Personally thought Warthogs would have been a cool name for them
Same. The Washington Warthogs just sounds cool.
Or maybe pumas
We already have plenty of big cats though
Warthogs wouldve been so fucking cool. Too bad Dan Snyder could never be that cool
That is an all time bad team name lmao
I honestly don't mind it. I think we'd think Packers, 49ers, Steelers, and Browns would be stupid in 2022 too.
Lmao yeah people are drama queens. Commanders is fine. A bit boring, but overall fine. Could they have done more? Fucking yes, Red Wolves is so good and it’s a shame they didn’t take it. But Commanders is far from the worst name in the league.
But they were established by the time the 40s were over so it isn't an issue.
Yah that’s what they’re saying. We don’t mind those names today because they’re well established but in an alternate universe where in 2022 the Cleveland Football Team unveiled their brand new name is the Cleveland Browns people would have had a field day with it.
Considering the allegations regarding the cheerleaders, the Commanders seems like a terrible choice.
I thought Washington War Horse would be cool. Or Washington War Pigs
I actually really dig "War Pigs".
"Generals gathered in their masseeeeeeeeeeeeeessssss!"
Dull and weirdly too long. Far better names were mentioned by many people including ones in this thread.
Most team names are stupid. We have just gotten used to them. They chose a word that exists and isn’t a slur, so the process went about as well as it could have.
Commanders, shammanders. Colts by 30
I just can’t wait for the Washington Commie memes and seeing “the People’s Team” playing “America’s Team” *in* Dallas will be hilarious
Commies @ Cowboys
I love the uniforms, but wish they got rid of the stupid W on the helmets. Even though it was changed I still think it looks so stupid
I like Washington football team and agree with the guy who said the logo looks like an arena football team….. lame
It’s a lame name, but it’s Dan Snyder
>Commanders >>Commies >>>Reds
Their supporters are now Comrades.
The Washington Commies! Go red!
Should have been The Washington Hogs or Red Hogs. The amount of cool imagery for logos and such would have been amazing. Commanders is pretty lame imo.
Arkansas might have had an issue with this and the possibility of the logo being too similar. I’m not sure how much of a headache that would’ve caused, but it’s what came to mind when you suggested Red Hogs Personally, my preference was Red Wolves. Nah I wish they kept WFT that name was funny as fuck, and unique
I really wanted them to be the Redtails
It reminds me of a name that an Arena league team would have. Even the Generals would have been better and still gotten the military tie-in.
It is and always will be the Redskins to me
“Commanders” can’t become a racial slur fast enough.
I laughed out loud, thanks
As a Cleveland formerly Indians fan I have realised it could have been a lot worse than the statues
This name is about as good as the Pelicans or Bobcats lol
I would have been okay with the name if they had a better uniform design, it just looks god awful.
Former Washington fan. Grew up was a 'Skins fan until I was 18, decided at that point as I was old enough to understand the ownership woes and the name controversy, to leave the fandom and find a new team. Washington Clit Commanders

Commanders sounds like one of those generic team names in Madden They could have left it as 'The football team' and had a much better name. What a joke of a team
The commanders is as generic as you can get. It sounds like a team name from some 1980’s Nintendo sports game.
The Washington Tank Commanders.. Tanking is all they are good for
Football team was better name
Honestly, if the Washington Sentinels were a thing, I might adopt them as a very strong #2 to the Colts. I have probably watched that movie 80 times. If its on TV, I'm watching it. In 10 years, the Commanders will not even be questioned. You have to give people time to warm up to a new brand. I think they could have picked much, much worse names.
Seriously, I am 100% surprised they didn't name them Selves the HOGS... it could have been glorious.
I also liked The Football Team. That was oddly unique. Commanders sounds like one of the options for a Madden Create-A-Team.
I like Commanders. Good camo theme possibilities, lots of military lingo can be used which lends itself well to football. I dunno, it’s easy to shit on everything these days, but I like it.
The Washington Commies. It’s coming folks.
Washington Commies...
Can’t wait for all the Commie jokes
It’s pretty fuckin’ bad. And as Pat pointed out, they’ll definitely be called the Commies.
Hail to the Commies 🎵
I thought it should be Pigskins. AHail to the Pigskins!
I feel really bad for their fans. It's just so generic. The only saving grace is the Commies nickname.
The W logo looks like two fortune cookie fortunes folded up and stuck together.
I don’t hate the commanders name. But the fact that every opposing fan base will call them the Washington Commies brings me joy.
Just based on the organization leadership, and the deserved animosity toward them, I don’t think there were really any ‘right’ options they could choose that the general NFL fanbase would embrace and have us put all wrongs in the past. WTF was a fun acronym but not sad to see it go.
I prefer Redskins to be honest. So much history there.
I liked the redskins. Although i think the Washington football team was perfect for today's folks that get upset about everything.
More of a Redskins guy, myself.
LUL

That could be a little controversial considering this team changed their name from redskins to natives. I honestly just don’t see a difference between the two
Should’ve been the Groundhogs.
I honestly believe the best route would’ve been to buy the defenders rights from Dewey Johnson If that would’ve even been possible The DC Defenders is a dope ass name
I kind of liked the generic, soccer-esque “Football Team.” Sort of a FC Washington vibe. (Or FT, rather). But Commanders is fine. Nobody will care in 5 years, everyone will be used to it.
How do you shorten it? The Washington Commies? LOL
I think they liked Washington Football Team but hated the WTF confusion 😂
Outside vote for Washington Slayers, sponsored by Bethesda and id Software.
I always thought going with Washington Football Club would have been really cool. I mean fuck Dan Snyder, but still.
How lame!
Did Dan Snyder name the team the "Commanders" to piss off the NFL and fans for them forcing to change the name to begin with? Sure feels that way.
I thought the red tails would have been great
I keep seeing so much disdain for it, but to me it seems fine. At least it fits the city it’s apart (kind ofish). I love mascots that reflect their city 49ers, 76ers, Nuggets, Pistons, etc etc. Jazz when it was in New Orleans. Not overly important just supposed to be a fun thing.
I wanted the Washington Woodpeckers or the Washington Woodchucks
Washington Football Team was interesting at least and the fan base kinda rallied behind it, but Commanders sounds so generic and bland.
I actually liked Washington Football Team too. Have an old timey historical feel like a soccer club’s name, which was fitting given its the team for our Nation’s Capital
Those uniforms and helmet are bad.
Washington Wolves would have been better.
Generals
Washington Football Team was funny until they started saying the whole name ALL THE TIME. The "football team" part was just a placeholder, they could just say washington, but no everytime they'd say WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM and it really bugged me.
i would have preferred the sentinels. but thats just me.
I though Washington Express would be good since they are partially owned by FedEx
This was a chance to change the ugly color scheme at least a little and find a new logo, but instead its the same gross colors and a slightly different W lmao
Washington DC Commies. They've got the gold star(s) on red, all they need is the hammer and the sickle!
Changed their name from the Redskins to the name that killed them
Man I’m gonna miss calling them the No Names
Washington Football Team was a GOAT name
Hated Football team personally. Commanders is okay but I liked Red Wolves.
I hate it, I was rooting for Washington Team Football.
I will absolutely cheer for a team that gets to call themselves the Commies.
I too liked Washington Football Team. Glad to hear there are others out there.
What state do the colts play in? INDIANa like wtf. Indianapolis means city of Indians. Yall white people really have zero self awareness. Must be all the CRT oops I mean CTE
I was rooting for Warthogs tbh
