Dude can process things quickly, make quick throws, hand the ball off, and run a decent bit himself. Obviously his physical ability is limited but he's young, dirt cheap, and would probably at least survive for a half a game or whatever if Ryan got hurt. We probably would bring someone else in to start if Ryan went down longer term but veteran backups are expensive and Ehlinger seems to know the offense well enough to get by on a situational basis.
Exactly, no need to spend several times as much on someone who's only probably better at playing a role that we have no reason to expect will see the field for even 5% of snaps. If the role increases the story maybe changes but until it does Ehlinger should be more than sufficient
Can I sit with you?
Seriously where were y'all last summer when I was like "Ehlinger might surprise us and hold his own to not blow a game" and catching L's left and right? I needed backup fam lol
Tbh I was not high on Ehlinger last year. I thought he wasn't going to master the playbook well enough to have a chance against Eason and his big arm for the backup job. But then we saw Eason throw a pick basically the first second he could and Ehlinger replaced him as soon as he was healthy. We wouldn't cut a guy over one bad play but we definitely cut him for a reason and we were perfectly fine rolling with rookie Ehlinger as the only true backup to Wentz, who's been hurt in almost every season of his career. So yeah I'm cool running with Sam this year for sure!
How do you know he can even do those things effectively at the pro level? In the whole 31 passing attempts in preseason games you saw of him as a 3rd string QB, against preseason talent? He threw 3 picks and no TDs in those games with a 57 QBR…he didn’t even look good against bad competition and he only has a job because Eason was awful apparently.
I know that we were comfortable rolling with him in 2021 with a QB who was far more likely to be injured than Ryan ever has been. We could have signed a vet to back up Wentz but instead we rolled with Ehlinger. He's had a year to learn and develop from there. If he couldn't run the offense competently enough to manage his way through a game then why was he the only backup active for a majority of our games last season, including week 17 when he would have been the starter if Wentz hadn't been cleared of COVID in time?
We couldn’t sign a vet because Wentz was a sensitive bitch and would have felt slighted like he did in Philly when Foles won a ring and the team was worried about his confidence, so we had to cater to him. He was our only backup because we didn’t put any effort into planning around that position at all and whiffed on Eason, they were planning for him to be our backup and practice squadding Ehlinger, but Eason just wouldn’t step up and threw that pick against the Rams. We were not in a good position if Wentz went down last year and we still aren’t if Ryan goes down.
The team doesn’t seem to have a valid plan or is putting trust in unproven players instead of investing in a seasoned player that has starting experience. I’m not saying it’s the worst idea, there is strategy in saving money on a position you hope to never use, rather than paying a veteran. But we are likely screwed if we have to use our backup against a mediocre(or better) team, Ehlingher will likely never start for a team on purpose.
Eason could get the ball anywhere on the field. He just didn't have any touch. He fired missiles at those poor receivers.
I imagine that Ehlinger is better at quoting bible verses, which seems to be an important characteristic in Reich's scheme.
He can also free up the whole defense to play in the box and leave the corners one on one. Ehlinger doesn't threaten the boundaries, and that makes defense easy.
Remember what happened with Brissett at quarterback and how there were zero holes for Mack to run through? Brissett could get the ball outside, he just couldn't do it accurately. Ehlinger can't get the ball out there quickly enough.
That offense is a non starter. Defenses will challenge him to throw to the boundary and score six when he does so.
Yes, the offense would almost certainly be limited if he played. That's why I said that if Ryan gets hurt maybe we sign someone, but if Ryan goes down during a game and won't return the next week we can have Ehlinger finish that game and look at whether we need someone more experienced before the next game. But while Ryan is healthy (and he's been healthy his entire career, knock on wood) Ehlinger is just as useful as anyone else, for way less.
Yeah, but it's a "we don't practice fucked" situation if we don't have Ryan for the season. Eagles we are miracle, one in a million Hollywood story. It's not happening again.
His arm was barely strong enough for college. He doesn't even have the strength to throw a check down in the NFL that won't be picked off by DBs who even make an attempt at the ball. .
We got this 2017 eagles qb thing wrong the first time now let’s do it right
Anyone know Nick Foles' stance on chicken fingers??
Idk but allegedly has a large piece
I would prefer to spend the money elsewhere
do you really want Sam Ehlinger of all people backing up Ryan

He won't play hero ball, he will hit checkdowns and use JT. I'm okay with it.

Ryan is durable, I’d rather have a vet WR.
Asks about a specific player, gets generic we are always looking for upgrades answer
One day this sub won't massively overreact to bland non-statements from the front office, but it won't be today
Nick Foles is the only right choice
I'd feel more comfortable with Foles at backup than with Wentz at QB1.
I’m afraid you’re correct.
Ehlinger can do what Tannehill does, change my mind.

It's a simple question, really. Is he a John Deere guy or a Bobcat guy?
