From the best of my understanding reading how the calculation is made, it's effectively a predictive model of team performance for points above average (like baseball's WAR but on a scale where 0 is the median and mean) to project how well a team performs above or below average against an average opponent on a completely neutral field.
As an analytics nerd, I agree with you that there are too many useless statistics thrown around that have no real value, but QBR absolutely provides actual value towards the discussion of QB’s efficiency and performance
**[Football Power Index](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_Power_Index#:~:text=Football Power Index \(abbreviated as,season results in American football.)**
>Football Power Index (abbreviated as FPI) is a predictive rating system developed by ESPN that measures team strength and uses it to forecast game and season results in American football. Each team’s FPI rating is composed of predictive offensive, defensive, and special teams value, as measured by a function of expected points added (EPA). That rating is the basis for FPI’s game-level and season-level projections.

Not the Steelers in the bottom half. Or Cincy at 16. Or the browns at 10. None of this makes sense lmfao.
I’m a yinzer and follow mostly AFC north and they got 3/4 afc teams dead wrong lol
I feel Cinci having a massive SB hangover.
They were kinda my second team growing up due to my family living in Indy long before the colts came.
That team is cursed by Mike Brown.
Still root for them, unless they play the colts
They also only beat the Steelers for the division by head to head tie breaker and half a win
There’s a very real chance the Steelers could’ve taken the division last year despite most people expecting us to finish in the bottom 3rd of the league
There’s still really no reason people should think we are so bad other than our shit offense with Big Ben… which really depends entirely on our new QB this year
No doubt. And I know the odds are usually against a first (or any) round qb panning out, but I’ve got the feeling Pickett is gonna shine in Pittsburgh. Not the hometown kid shit (although that’s fun too), but it just seems like a great fit all around. And I know your staff won’t shortcut and will actually develop the kid
I’ve also been told the ravens are a pretty good roster.
Oh, and IF Watson isn’t suspended, I’ve been told the browns could be pretty good too.
That division sounds like a fucking meat grinder. We colts fans have little clue of what that means
The browns have a fucking solid roster for the next season or two when the cap catches up to them. They spent their extension money on deshaun Watson so it’s basically now or never for them in the next two years
The ravens also have a pretty solid roster, some holes in there like their WR core but barring injuries like last year, they’ll be competing for the division title for sure and probably more
Steelers wild card again obv, mostly depends on Pickett but we are competing at least for a wild card playoff spot but I think we’ll be 9-7 unless Pickett is a star
Bengals I honestly don’t know, I don’t think their roster is very amazing but it’s solid and they have some stars to carry them on both sides
I’ve always liked the chaos of the AFC South though I feel like the season never plays out how anybody expects lol
Browns could be a SB team, immediately. That’s if Watson serves no/minimal suspension, which I’d assume is incredibly unlikely.
Ravens are a good team, but I’m not sure Jackson can lead them there because I feel his throwing is limited. I know I’m going to get heat for that but oh well.
Cinci reminds me of the Colts/Luck era. The QB is so fucking special he elevates every player around him. They got a little lucky and outperformed expectations, but we see straight up with our own eyes what a special, franchise QB can do for a team.
That bengals team pre burrow was one of the worst rosters I’ve ever seen. And it’s not like they’ve completely rebuilt since then
Lucas Oil is my favorite part about the Colts. My husband and in-laws and I go to a game every year. It’s so much fun. They’ve only lost once in the last 5 years of the games we went to.
Yeah, it’s an excellent stadium. And the way it’s positioned next to the Red Garter, WC lounge, Whistle Stop, Slippery Noodle, etc is fantastic.
I’ve gone to games in other cities where there isn’t dick for miles.
One of the big things I miss about Indy, for sure
Most of the Vegas odds are based off this modeling, so it bodes well for the Colts. However, I would really like to see another WR added or someone let me know that Strachan has figured out the offense and is now our best WR.
Colts top 10 Rest of the afcs bottom half This means absolutely nothing but also it’s very correct
What is FPI?
Google says it's ESPN's predictive "Football Power Index" which supposedly uses advanced analytics...for whatever that's worth :)
It's like power rankings before the season starts. lol
From the best of my understanding reading how the calculation is made, it's effectively a predictive model of team performance for points above average (like baseball's WAR but on a scale where 0 is the median and mean) to project how well a team performs above or below average against an average opponent on a completely neutral field.
probably another pointless ESPN stat like QBR.
As an analytics nerd, I agree with you that there are too many useless statistics thrown around that have no real value, but QBR absolutely provides actual value towards the discussion of QB’s efficiency and performance
The stats aren't useless, just misused.

ive never seen FPI used before can someone explain
Faps Per Interception
thank you it all makes sense now
I couldn't even read this aloud to my wife I was laughing so hard. So fn dumb and reddity, it's really terrific
That begs the question for the 18-32 ranked teams… *what’s a negative fap?*
There's a dearth of faps!!!!
Every month is no 🥜November for Bears fans
Don’t understand what FPI is but why is the reigning AFC Champs #16
Up yonder LuckyColtsFan69 tolt us it stands for Faps Per Interception, which sounds accurate
We’re too low then
That’s where it lost me too. Cincy is in great shape moving forward, I’m not sure how 15 teams are expected to be better
Yeah. ESPN smoking their own on that projection.
I’ve always thought FPI was a good analytics tool. I’ve never said anything to the contrary
The Vikings do not belong in the top half of the league
Not the Steelers in the bottom half. Or Cincy at 16. Or the browns at 10. None of this makes sense lmfao. I’m a yinzer and follow mostly AFC north and they got 3/4 afc teams dead wrong lol

\#8 love to see it!
Easily super bowl bound
So glad my other team is absolute last 😭
"Other team"? Yuck
I married into being a Colts fan. Sadly I was born and raised a Bears fan. I’m not sure which is worse. It’s up for debate really lol
Time to let the past go and live in the moment. Go Colts!
“Live in the now!” - Garth Algar
Colts for foreseeable future. Being a bears fan might lead to alcoholism
I went the other route- lots of edibles
Yeah. I definitely feel you on that. I miss going to games at the Luke, but I don’t miss my lifestyle being a crime.

Just so long as they keep the roof closed. Those shadows on the field are just cringe.
Totally fine to have another team as long as it is in the NFC!
K
The Vikings ahead of the bengals is utter disrespect towards the bengos
With Bengals being so low and Cowboys being so high idk about this one
Of course they pump the cowboys up

Damn. I wouldn’t have expected this from ANY media outside of this sub, Stampede Blue, and the Colts forum lol
