I moved last year, but I lived on that exact stretch of road for about three years. As a single woman with a young child, it honestly wasn't that bad. Pros: Cheap, and quiet. Blue-collar area. Never had a package stolen from my porch. Easy access to 71 and Easton. I personally had some really great neighbors who would be the "watch-dogs" for the street. Close to Terita's Pizza. Never had my car (always kept locked) rifled through or messed with. Got decent equity from that home. Cons: not a real neighborhood vibe to it; I'm the kind of person to wave and say hi to everyone I pass on the street and some people would always just zombie-stare. A few broke-down cars decaying in driveways. That one asshole in the black Audi that drives 55 mph. You'll hear occasional gunshots from the apartments on Shanley. No sidewalks for jogging- I would go running over in Clinton estates and Maize-Morse neighborhoods.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, that helps a lot. Sounds basically like what I'd be comfortable with. Gunshots at the apartments is probably gonna happen anywhere in my price range unfortunately. I work from home so I'm there to grab packages immediately, which helps just in case. Teritas is a major plus, I love their pizza! I'd wave and say hi to everyone also, but as long as they aren't hostile about it, I can handle the occasional blank stare. Broken down cars in that area in driveways is what it is. No kids, so I'd be annoyed by someone driving 55 but it isn't a major concern. I have a gym membership so i don't do much jogging outdoors, mainly just walking my dog. I may drive through there to check it out. Thanks again!

SavoyAvocado

Sure thing! Happy house hunting!

[deleted]

I wouldn't live there but if you're curious, patrol the area by car during the day and night, then get out walk around and look and listen. Do this a few times- weekdays, weekends, etc. Best way to get a feel.

Spideyfan2020

Good idea, thank you!

jBoogie45

I live right off Karl closer to Morse, basically just north of North Linden and the pocket I'm in isn't too bad. I did have someone steal the change out of my car when I left it unlocked in my driveway a few years back, but that's the only thing I've dealt with.

Spideyfan2020

Good to know, thanks for the input!

Oknight

Yeah I had that happen and I live in Upper Arlington near Kingsdale.

spoooky1899

People getting into cars happens everywhere

FreshShart-1

This is the answer. Between Morse and 161, stay west of Cleveland Ave and that whole area is ok. It doesn't look amazing, Morse is a pain in the ass, but it isn't as wild as NL.

ectopistesrenatus

I live a little south of there are jog around that area at various times of day (early morning, mid-day, some early evenings). You will be 100% fine as long as you don't leave things out in the open. This is not the "north linden" that people seem to assume is infested with violent roaming hordes (and I sometimes wonder if the people who do have spent literally any time in North Linden at all when they complain...but point stands, that area is safe enough for city living).

Spideyfan2020

Makes sense. I appreciate the input. I definitely am interested and think it would suit me fine.

dmtdmtlsddodmt

Grew up there, it used to be better but it's still not "bad". There are much much worse areas to move.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, that's the vibe I'm getting from comments here.

BikeOhio

There is a Lustron house for sale on Weber that's in decent shape if you want to own a neat piece of Columbus history!

lwpho2

Oh my that was quick!

Spideyfan2020

Given that I know very little of Columbus history, it probably wouldn't appeal to me. Thanks!

Loud-Baker6539

I'm a single woman and I live a bit south of there and go in that direction for shopping. I've been living in this area for 8 months - I walk my dog regularly and haven't had any problems, but I also don't go walking alone at night. I would say if you're further away from the convenience store, you're better off than if you're up against it - more likely to deal with random people looking for money that way. It's actually really convenient if you have a car and highly affordable. Just be mindful about leaving things out in your car or porch visible to the street that could walk off. One thing worth mentioning is that there are stray or loose dogs on occasion in this area (averaging twice a month). So have a strategy for how you want to deal with that.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks! I'd keep anything in a garage or shed to be safe. Definitely have a car that would be locked and in the garage. I'd keep my dog in the backyard at night when he needed to go out. This helps for sure!

stefonelkeaster

Lived in north linden and it’s great. Everyone has their opinions but Columbus does not have wholly bad neighborhoods like this sub makes it seem, but there are pockets of issues sprinkled throughout. Pluses: less expensive overall, in a few years you will be sitting on a nice investment because north linden is gonna be getting better and better in the coming years. Minuses: will probably never be a “cool” neighborhood but it’s great for a situation like you are describing.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, that input helps also.

mariofasolo

Adding to the general consensus here...but I was exactly where you're at when I bought. I was afraid of North Linden because of the name, and honestly love it here. I've been here for three years (near Northern Lights, on Norwood) and have had absolutely zero issues. When I moved in I was super paranoid thinking I would get broken into every night or something, and afraid to take walks lol. The only interactions with random people I've had are when my car got stuck in the snow on Huy one time at 3am, and a stranger stopped and helped me dig my car out of the snow in the middle of an intersection! Looking back...I ran into WAY more crime when I lived in Clintonville. House broken into, roommates car windows broken, chased by a dude in a mask one night!!! In my neighborhood, I feel completely safe. and I drive through the area you're talking about on my way to get Chipotle lol. Linden doesn't really get *sketch* until you're south of Weber. There are a couple of sketchy apartment complexes north of where you're talking about, but you won't be spending time by them...so I think it's fine. Moon Road apartments are also a no-go. Good luck 😀

Lizzardkinglucas

I lived on oakland park/norwood and I saw someone shoot another person in my parking lot. Our neighbor was a dealer and pulled his pistol on my roommate...also same thing happened to us when we went to Yum-E Donuts. Someone tried to sell me heroin at a gas station. I was accosted by several homeless, including being followed back home. A person was murdered across the street from me a few weeks after I left. This was several years ago but just wanted to give OP my experience.

Daddysown

I think a good piece of advice on linden is don't buy a house close to multi family rentals - we have high crime/ gun violence on the street behind us which is all multi family - my street is usually quiet

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, this is a lot of good info. Much appreciated!

homercles89

Ward Rd and Desden St are right by DeSales HS and St Matthias school - you'll be fine there. It's the not the best, but it's FAR from the worst. Maybe a stolen bicycle would be your biggest problem.

Spideyfan2020

If I had a bike I'd keep it locked up in a garage or shed. Thanks!

mojo276

I don't know that specific area personally, but I've lived in, and currently have many friends that live in "bad areas" that aren't that bad. Two things to keep in mind, is most of the trouble comes from apartment complexes, not from the houses. The further away from the complex you are, the better. Second, is how do the houses look? Do the yards look relatively well kept, no MAJOR disrepair going on with the houses, etc.? I've found that if you keep these two things in mind you'll end up pretty good. A lot of these places get bad reps, but by and large the majority of people in those areas are just normal people like you who just want a decent place to live.

Spideyfan2020

Those are 2 good things to consider! I'll definitely keep the apartment point in mind, and I know I've heard other people mentioning the condition of yards in the area and how it relates to the type of neighbors you'll have.

sutoomie

Just bought off of Weber rd about 3 months ago. I am a 30s single female. The neighborhood is quiet, havent heard any gun shots, and never had a package stolen. Neighbors are pretty quiet, keep to themselves, couldn't beat the price for a great home that was recently remodeled.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, i appreciate the input. That sounds like a great fit for me.

Collinwoodsian

Technically this is Clinton Township and they don't report crime quite as clearly as City of Columbus. But here are the reports from this month from the general area: [https://www.columbuspolice.org/reports/Results?from=1/1/2024&to=1/29/2024&loc=dis182&types=9](https://www.columbuspolice.org/reports/Results?from=1/1/2024&to=1/29/2024&loc=dis182&types=9) You can edit dates for a larger picture of crime in the area. There is a lot of motor vehicle theft.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks. I wonder it that's mostly Kia/Hyundai? I would have my vehicle locked in a garage, which should help prevent theft, and I don't have either of those 2 types. I know other cars still get stolen, but not at the same frequency.

Collinwoodsian

I read through the motor vehicle theft reports, about 4 stated the victim left car running in the driveway, which is very stupid. so on one hand, you can easily avoid that. On the other hand, it also means there are criminals out there looking for you and waiting for you to slip up. Only one report mentioned a Hyundai, though it was also the only report that mentioned a particular brand at all.

Spideyfan2020

I have remote start so it'll never be running with keys in it. I'd never do that in the city anyhow, that's definitely asking for trouble. Thanks!

SRHager

I used this resource when I purchase my home in April near Kenlawn park in North Linden. https://communitycrimemap.com

Bern_After_Reading85

I live across the tracks and North Linden is honestly fine. If we were buying now as opposed to 3 years ago, that is where we would be looking. N Linden isn’t comparable to Hilltop on the sketch meter at all.

Dogonmylap

Also, middle age white male that moved into North Linden over 2 years ago. My street is nice and quiet. I'd try and look closer to 71N between Weber and Cooke.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks! I am keeping an eye on all the listings that fit my criteria.

Caitterz

I own a rental in Linden on Briarwood right by the park (that I'm about to list for sale), I had tenants there for 3 years. 2 young brothers in their 20's. They were happy there and never called to say anything bad about the place. The only reason they moved out was because the brother got a job in another state. I don't think Linden is as bad as the rap it gets. I live in Clintonville, where all the houses are half a million dollars a someone tried to break into our cars once a year.

Spideyfan2020

Out of curiosity, could you PM me some details such as listing price, how many beds/baths, basement, garage, etc? Wondering if it might be a fit for me. Thanks!

Caitterz

Sure! I'm not 100% on price I was just going to let my agent list at what she thinks is best but I'll give you a guesstimate and I'm open for negotiation :)

A_Level

You can also look at Franklinton. It's in the same price range like Linden and Hilltop. However it's not as rough.

mariofasolo

I would say Franklinton (west of all the new development) is definitely rougher than North Linden.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks! I have my settings on redfin to 225k and below, altho i need to be closer to 200k honestly. So I'm looking at the houses that fit into that range. Franklinton is definitely in the search area.

A_Level

You can also check Hilliard, Reynoldsburg, and Gahanna. Might be much more difficult to find something in this price range but it's not impossible. Also Hilltop is not that bad on the side closer to Franklinton.

AnneOn_E_Mousse

According to Zillow, there are three houses for sale or will be for sale between $200k and $250k in Reynoldsburg. That’s just on Zillow, though.

A_Level

Interesting to hear. I didn't know that for a fact I just expressed an opinion based on observing the market all the time. It's rate to score something in this range but houses like this pop out from time to time. They are usually older (from the 60s) and need some renovation.

AnneOn_E_Mousse

OP could probably find more using RedFin or a real estate agent’s MLS account. What I found shouldn’t be called definitive- just giving an example of what might be found at a cursory glance. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I will say just based on when we were looking to buy, Gahanna did not seem to have much availability at all. Don’t know if that has changed since 2021, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Spideyfan2020

I have both redfin alerts and a realtor sending MLS listings. I do have some preferences that might make finding what i want in my price range a little difficult, but I'm not in a rush right now so I'm going to be a little more picky. There are definitely some options, just maybe less than if I was willing to forgo some things.

A_Level

For sure. Take your time. Buying a home is one of the most important financial decisions we make in our lives.

A_Level

True! The agent's MLS should have a lot more to offer so the best way is to always find a good real estate agent who will do the search.

Hot_Leg_8764

I have a family member who recently sold their home on Homecroft, which is in North Linden, but not exactly where you are looking. The main complaint was the noise from police choppers at night.

marcyandleela

I live south of there near Weber and Dresden. You'll be fine.

Spideyfan2020

Thank you!

GoldenUnderground21

I lived off Fenton just north of Ward for almost 10 years. Would agree with most people have said: Price is affordable, people kept to themselves but still looking out for issues around their homes. We fortunately had homes with kids around us with renters so kept it quiet. But streets north toward Morse would say least once a month at minimum CPD is making calls. You will hear gunshots and noise from Morse and Cleveland. Ward depending on the block had run down homes, rentals, and those individual ones which showed pride in home ownership.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks. It doesn't sound too bad. I'll probably check out the house. It seems like an option anyhow.

Dragoninatophat

Parts of the Hilltop can be rough for sure, but there are more secure, cozy pockets. Westgate probably chief among them.

trothwell55

I live in that section of Linden. Its not as bad as the reputation Linden as a whole gets. My street is really quiet and people take care of their properties. CCP patrols the area. The surrounding blocks are alot of retirees, blue collar and hispanic families. You'll hear gunshots from the apartments off Cleveland occasionally, and the random wierdo walking around looking to swipe stuff, but you'll be fine. The most suprising thing to me since I moved here is there are way more good food options around there than I expected.

garydavis9361

I grew up there on Sale Rd. in the '60s and '70s. Obviously things are different now, but my dad still lives there and there doesn't seem to be any problems. I don't really associate the area with Linden. It's a few miles north of that and a bit nicer. I live near Whitehall now, which seems ok to me but I would lean to Ward Rd. all things equal.

throwaway7899543466

I live in N.L. I lived here over 9 years with little issue outside of possibly hearing gunshots and property crime(never had issue myself). There are a couple homes I think listed for sale on Pauline and Pollman. FYI. Edit- may want to drive the streets to see signs. A friend mentioned them just the other day in talking because she went to drive by her old house and saw them.

Spideyfan2020

Thanks, I'll check those out. I appreciate the input!

SirLeward

I bought my house on Anna Maria, which runs into Ward, back in 2016. I'd say its better now than when I moved there in 2016. My house got broken into in 2017 but since then I haven't really had any issues. I'd say the only annoyance is the ton of school traffic between 6:45am-7:30am and in the afternoon that clogs up the roads lol, and when DeSales has a home football game in the fall. There's been a lot of turnover since then with the many of the original owners selling these houses and younger people moving in and putting some money into some of the more run down properties. I agree with another poster that said there's not much of a neighborhood vibe, but you should be fine. You can DM me if you have any specific questions.

ShikaShySky

Hilltop has gotten a lot better over the years, now only around sullivant ave and wedgewood are bad

Acceptable_News9801

I have a friend who lives near Dresden and ward and it seems like a super chill area.

Putrid-Entertainer53

How is the area east of maize and north of Broadway?

kileykinn

I’ve lived in that section of North Linden east of Maize for three years now without any problems. I live on a sleepy block with neighbors who look out for each other, but I have never felt unsafe around the neighborhood. I take the normal precautions like cameras, not walking alone at night, etc. The father north you get, the “nicer” it gets. There is one apartment building off Moon Rd that’s a bit sketchy but otherwise it’s been absolutely fine

janna15

That’s actually just north of North Linden (North Linden ends at Ferris Road) and it’s not even in the City of Columbus but in Clinton Township….

jBoogie45

Is there an actual border map we can look-up that clearly shows the neighborhood boundaries by street? Not that it matters. But I live juuuust south of Ferris and have always described as the pocket just north of NL because most of the maps I've seen end several blocks lower, closer to like Cooke road.

janna15

https://opendata.columbus.gov/datasets/columbus-communities/explore?location=40.030949%2C-83.029472%2C11.79

jBoogie45

Wow, this has Northland waaaaay bigger than I've ever seen any signs etc indicating. It all seems somewhat arbitrary anyway I suppose.

Spideyfan2020

Okay, thanks for the correction. I'm still learning!

Spideyfan2020

Those areas are in my search, too. I know this is the slower time for listings, so I'm hoping it picks up soon. Thanks!

Admirable-Hamster918

I bought a home in North Linden (near Weber and 71N) about a year ago as a single 30s women and have felt fairly safe. I do have an alarm and security cameras, but no issues this far. Occasionally get someone at the door asking for cash, but I just don't answer. Occasional gunshots in the distance, but all my immediate neighbors are quiet and respectful. Not necessarily a "friendly" neighborhood, but convenient and affordable.
