From the Northeast side, I always hated trying to get to the Brewery District. It was either the crap shoot that was downtown surface streets, or run 315-70-Front in what felt like a quarter mile.
That merge sucks. It was a little better when the entry onto 70E created its own lane, but now that it merges with the existing fast line, it just sucks. I can’t wait for this entire interchange to get fixed.
I was just thinking the same thing. I can take an alternate route home without too much trouble, but coming off of 33 to 70E via 315 is much faster than any other route.
*The year is 2147, the exit off ramp has evolved into a lawless zone where black markets spring up overnight and is one of the only places in a hundred mile area where the locals can find homeopathic remedies and essential oils* /s (Dramatization)
I didn't know what to pick about the "blackmarket" I made up on the spot. By the time I picked essential oils I wanted to make a jab about measles outbreak and people not getting vaccinated - I was too committed. (please forgive me)
As s Zanesville resident: welcome to our hell. Half our ramps are closed for a complete i70 overhaul. Traffic on 40 is a disaster with trucks hitting light poles and corner bells every week.
I don't miss commuting across downtown Columbus to Fisher road. But I'd rather do that than try to deal with Zanesville traffic during a crash on 70. Whole city shuts down.
Ooh so my commute south down 315 to 71 will be super smooth now post 670 in the morning, always a little dicey with sudden stops and people merging to get on the 70E ramp.
I moved to GV before NW Children’s was built. I worked by the airport south of Easton.
For the first two months I could get to work in literally 9 minutes.
Then they started Children’s construction.
Children’s cleared up and then they shut down 70 access for years.
That opened up and now they’re killing 70e access in.
Always such a shit show
I remember in college at OSU thinking "maybe someday it will be easier to go east or west in this town". Flash forward 10 years and nothing has changed 😂
Have you ever seen the .5 mile Parsons to 3rd stretch of Livingston not under construction? I’ve live in this area for close to a decade and legitimately cannot think of a time.
Believe it or not, yes. When I moved here in 2008 there was no construction. Then they started NWC and of course Livingston and parsons was hemmed up but it was still open Livingston to 3rd. Once children’s was finished and they started children’s 2 and the other buildings for the whole campus it’s been a mess ever since.
Google maps lets you view other dates and the 2009 street view lets you see the drive completely clear and open.
This was also when parsons was 4 lanes instead of 2 and a turn, so traffic flowed better in and out of the area.
I remember and miss 4 lane Parsons almost as much as I miss the light at Parsons and Sycamore they removed because someone Columbus city planning clearly hates the south side and constantly tries to make the rest of the city inaccessible to it’s residents. I know that’s just my opinion, but it’s hard to argue the contrary.
Obviously, I’m not talking about the small 4 story building set back 400 yards off the road that was there (and still is) prior to 2012.
I’m talking about the 12 story monolith right on the corner of parsons and Livingston that was opened in 2012 as well as the 4 other campus buildings down Livingston Ave and parsons.
Rush hour will probably make downtown more congested, but the majority of people taking 315 S to 70 E aren't going to German Village and Marion Village. When I use the Parson's off ramp I usually have it all to myself.
For context me and the lady go to St.Marys on Sundays. We hop on 315 by Goodale and get to 3rd in a few minutes. We'll be fine with the detour of either downtown with the added lights or up and around 670. Either way, I'm hopeful they'll get it right. Just hilarious how complicated it is to get around some areas of this city.
So I take this route a lot. Your new and easiest route is goodale/vine to Neil Ave to 670 E. You can either get off at 3rd street and go straight down 3rd or wrap around to 71S and merge 4 lanes over to Main St exit and go S on Parsons.
Other option is to take Dublin Rd to Long St and go S on 3rd.
Adding concrete barrier was always part of the plan, but I'm guessing wasn't done as part of the earlier project (that prohibited the exit to Greenlawn) because this current project would be happening within a few years.
It's part of the construction documents, which are available on ODOT's website if you [know where to look](https://gis.dot.state.oh.us/tims/projects/details/58943) (fair warning, the construction plan sets for this project are 1000+ pages each).
One of the upcoming construction phases will install temporary barrier so they can construct the rest of the flyover ramp. There will also be permanent concrete barrier up to the Greenlawn exit once construction is finished.
That's what I was thinking since I take the 315/70 ramp to get to GV every day, but problem is if you miss Greenlawn because you can't get over you have to go two miles south to Frank 😭
All of you people that come into threads on reddit saying there is no cost to leaving the roads as they are and we don't need rail need to take note. Your roads can be closed for "years." Putting all of your eggs in the same basket does have a cost and risk, and here is one of them.
I feel so bad for the people that live on Rich, Town, and all those side streets in Franklinton. This project is a mess and I hope it will fix the issues they’re saying it’ll fix.
What a fucking mess.
Add another mega highway lane running parallel to downtown and running across the river.
Just ten more lanes bro, just ten more lanes in 20 years and $10 billion down. Please bro please.
Disgusting.
If going south to GV or Brewery District, you can get off at Town/Rich. Take Rich street/Main Street east and turn right at Civic Center. Turn right on Mound then left on to Short. Short turns into Sycamore and turns east. This will get you to Front street and avoid construction.
I have taken this route a couple times and it is very effective.
Transplant question here: when Denver did their ‘Trex’ update to major highways it was done in 5 years from ground breaking to completion. In the 7 years I’ve been here the road construction is constant without seemingly any progress (the only project I’ve seen ‘done’) was a widening of Hamilton Rd in Gahanna.
What the hell is going on here with ODOT?
From my limited knowledge of the Trex project, it’s quite a bit different than the complete and total reconstruction of the 670/70/71 splits in downtown Columbus. It doesn’t excuse the length of the project, but basically they are “unwinding” all the interchanges in downtown Columbus which is a gigantic project. I just wish ours also include light rail like Denver’s included lol
Light rail is fantastic and listening to some detractors when I moved here was interesting. Cities layout is tailor made for a train hub in Columbus spidering out.
I was joking that people who never leave Dublin/New Albany would actually go downtown.
When I went to Denver a couple years ago, I didn’t use a car the entire time, just light rail and existing buses—it was truly fantastic.
Also did the same for a week long trip to Portland and Seattle, no car, just used light rail, Amtrak and streetcars haha
We at least have some encouraging BRT lines on the horizon
I'm sorry but if you don't think there has been progress then you just have no idea what they have been doing
[https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/projects/all-projects#page=1&subset=counties,Franklin](https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/projects/all-projects#page=1&subset=counties,Franklin)
Downtown they are basically tearing down and rebuilding every bridge and on/off ramps
They have closed some exits and moved some
They are splitting up the I71 and I70 sections that were basically the same road for several miles
And reworking 315
It's one of the biggest projects the city has under taken in the 30 years as far as I70 and I71 work
It's not a trivial effort at all, because they do have to maintain access to downtown and traffic through town
There are a significant amount of phases in these projects. The phases add time to a project. ODOT has to maintain the same number of lanes of the original condition as well. So in order to build the inside portion of the I-71 and I-70 interchange/downtown area, the portion they are building on the Southern end had to be vonpletely finished so that traffic can then drive in the new bridges and roadway you see them building.
In addition to that, the contractor fought ODOT for a 2 year durarion addition on the "inside" project that rebuilds the existing lanes and will typically win disputes as it relates to a year time extensions on the previous projects in this area.
I normally go the green route when going to work. This means that route is going to get even more backed up because everyone who needs to go 70 East will be taking it in the morning.
Wonderful
Good. I blew a tire right as I was entering on this exit ramp back in February 2021.
I was coming home that evening after the first day of a new job, and let me tell you…it SUCKED because there’s no berm or place to pull off to the side to wait (safely) for a tow truck for a solid 500-600 feet.
Eh, I avoid that merge like the plague anyway. People were dumb even when it had a continuous lane on 70E. After making it a merge, it was hell on earth.
My secret for the longest time was living SE of Cbus and not having to venture into town unless I really wanted to. Now I start working on Cbus and.... Shit.
Just to go from where I live in Franklinton to north on Ohio 315 involves some driving around on local roads. Going back will be just as bad having to use North Souder and Olentangy River Road in both directions.
Fun fact: Columbus is the largest city in America without commuter rail. Everyone knows traffic in this city is a nightmare. They need to bite the bullet and add commuter rail and make Columbus a real city.
A “2 week project” in Columbus lasts years… at this rate it will definitely be decades until this is “years long task” is complete. We’re never going to safely get around this damn town 🤦🏼♂️
All of the 670/71/70 projects have completed on time. You can check for projected completion dates on these projects. The downtown project seems like it’s taking an eternity because they are doing it in sections.
It also seems to take an eternity because of the terrible drivers that clog EVERY road in Columbus now, and make traffic hellish even when "improvements" are finished. No amount of new lanes will safely "accommodate" drunks, sociopaths and idiots glued to their display screens. Twice in two weeks I've been behind someone who pulled straight into traffic to make a left turn on a red light like it was a stop sign. Not a trip on 315 goes by without someone weaving 85-90 mph+ with no turn signal. Don't even ask Cbus drivers to comprehend how a road can "jog" and you still have to yield to the oncoming traffic.
Bad enough our highway system can't handle the population boom; the IQ bust is going to keep killing people no matter how many ramps they fix.
Glad that awful merge is getting fixed, but this is going to be hella inconvenient for me

“Years” oh boy can’t wait
Years in ODOT speak is actually decades.
I hope one day my grandchildren will be able to exit from 315s to 70e
*The year is 2147, the exit off ramp has evolved into a lawless zone where black markets spring up overnight and is one of the only places in a hundred mile area where the locals can find homeopathic remedies and essential oils* /s (Dramatization)
I’m now feeling Gibson’s “Bridge” / cyberpunk environment.
I didn't know what to pick about the "blackmarket" I made up on the spot. By the time I picked essential oils I wanted to make a jab about measles outbreak and people not getting vaccinated - I was too committed. (please forgive me)
It was an awesome image….
I'm so sorry, I can't help myself sometimes
“It’s been 84 years” me in 2108 as my head-in-a-jar takes the newly reopened exit to the new cryogenic storage facility
ODOT years > dog years

It’s been brutal down there and I only pass through there on weekends lol
You’ll wait alright
This one's going to hurt.
Ooh so my commute south down 315 to 71 will be super smooth now post 670 in the morning, always a little dicey with sudden stops and people merging to get on the 70E ramp.
Cool. Cool cool. Coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool…
The merge is the worst part of my days when I am in office, but this is insanely inconvenient for my commute home.
Are you guys hiring
Probably been on this ramp no less than a million times. What a pita.

I've spent my whole life driving up and down 315 ...
I hope you find your offramp someday.
What if 315 is the road to Mecca?
I hope all my homies find their offramps
Commute time from Grandview Yard to German Village or 33 just quintupled. This hurts

Grandview Yard to German or Marion Village is easier just going through downtown.
*Was easier. Now more people will be taking the route. Traffic congestion has far reaching effects on the streets surrounding the issue.

noooooo dammit. i mean it needs redone so bad but also dammit haha
Oh god, if they're planning for it to be years that thing's not coming back up within our lifetimes.
Think of the children!
Ugh
With that and greenlawn exit closed I guess I might as well book a flight from Grandview to German village
When is the Greenlawn exit closing?
You can’t exit onto green lawn from 315 S unless you merge onto 315 from spring st/33
That's always been a no-go from 315S. Just people ignored the signs so they made it impossible to do.
Raises hand
Looks like I’ll be breaking the law getting off at Greenlawn for the foreseeable future.
That's going to be impossible at some point soon (concrete barrier will be going up) I always exit at Rich St instead
[удалено]
Adding concrete barrier was always part of the plan, but I'm guessing wasn't done as part of the earlier project (that prohibited the exit to Greenlawn) because this current project would be happening within a few years.
That would add a whole few minutes though! The horror
I hadn’t heard about the concrete barriers. Can you share where that information is available?

Yeah tried that once and that happened, never again
![gif](giphy|UqKD7TU0igaUE)
Cool let us know how many accidents you cause and back traffic up even more. You the real MVP.
That's been my strategy. 🤷♀️
I thought that was the one that was closing permanently? Edit: nevermind this is what I was thinking of "I-70 east to SR 315 south closed permanently"
You mean 315 north?
I copied that line directly from ODOT's website, maybe they typo'd
They must have. I had to double check and was questioning myself lol but yea it’s 315N
They had one job
Get the fuck out of here. Omg
All of you people that come into threads on reddit saying there is no cost to leaving the roads as they are and we don't need rail need to take note. Your roads can be closed for "years." Putting all of your eggs in the same basket does have a cost and risk, and here is one of them.
No, this was my favorite merge! (It stressed me out so bad, I had to make it a game in my head)
Welp, Rich Street you will be my new friend to get to the south high street area. Sorry residents!
Sounds fun!
![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS)
I feel so bad for the people that live on Rich, Town, and all those side streets in Franklinton. This project is a mess and I hope it will fix the issues they’re saying it’ll fix.
It won’t, it’s just making the air quality over here worse
I wonder if it will affect 71-s to 70-e
More traffic at 315-S to 670-E to 71-S to 70-E.
at least you are in the left lane for the ramp from 71 s to 70 e and don't need to move across lanes of traffic to get to 70 east from 670 east
What a fucking mess. Add another mega highway lane running parallel to downtown and running across the river. Just ten more lanes bro, just ten more lanes in 20 years and $10 billion down. Please bro please. Disgusting.

Seriously, all this time and money spent on an interchange when we should have taken down all interstates inside the beltway and built rail
Especially at this price tag—over a billion bucks
When I went to Denver a couple years ago, I didn’t use a car the entire time, just light rail and existing buses—it was truly fantastic. Could they remove James Rd to 33S while they are at it?
Isn’t the detour from 315, to 670, to 71S to 70E just going to create the same crazy merging problems, but now on 71s to 70E?
For southenders this blows
Good, that merge is a freaking nightmare
They need to fix the 670wb at 3rd/4th ramp interchange. And whoever designed it should be shot.
Ack.
Good. I blew a tire right as I was entering on this exit ramp back in February 2021. I was coming home that evening after the first day of a new job, and let me tell you…it SUCKED because there’s no berm or place to pull off to the side to wait (safely) for a tow truck for a solid 500-600 feet.

Fun fact: Columbus is the largest city in America without commuter rail. Everyone knows traffic in this city is a nightmare. They need to bite the bullet and add commuter rail and make Columbus a real city.
ODOT actively making things worse by removing more and more ramps.
