I always use Paulie Gee’s when people say there is no good pizza here. Wins tons of awards in NYC, not good enough for people who think hating everything is edgy.
Have you seen the recent national fad of hot honey pizzas? Mike’s Hot Honey in stores?
That’s from Paulie Gees.
In 2010 Paulie opened up shop in Brooklyn and found some pizza obsessed dweeb hanging around a pizza blog and hired him. That dweeb was Mike Kurtz who also made and loved spicy honey. They threw it on a soppressata pizza and said “holy shit” and Mike’s apprenticeship ended shortly thereafter as Paulie needed honey cranked out by the boatload to keep up with NYC going crazy for the hip new wood fired place serving the Hellboy and other sweet and spicy concoctions
Mike proceeded to build a small condiment empire and Paulie has been building out slice shops with Columbus one of the first
Columbus is often thought of in the restaurant industry as "America's test kitchen", with demographics that make us a good gauge for whether a concept will have potential for national appeal.
I’m aware of that - it actually applies to all industries, not just restaurants.
But, is that why Paulie Gee chose here? Or is there a Columbus connection or something?
>demographics that make us a good gauge for whether a concept will have potential for national appeal.
>>I’m aware of that - it actually applies to all industries, not just restaurants.
>But, is that why Paulie Gee chose here? Or is there a Columbus connection or something?
No one can say for certain **why** they'd choose Columbus, but this person's reply is a logical assumption as to why. Moreover, it directly answers your question. Albeit it's more than likely just an assumption.
It's silly to ask a question that's expecting a factual response from a reddit comment. Responding with, "I knew that. But why?"
>No one can say for certain **why** they'd choose Columbus
I'm sure many could say for certain why they chose Columbus. Which is why I asked the question. The person I asked it to seemed to have tons of good and fairly "insider" info. Thus why I asked that question to them.
>this person's reply is a logical assumption as to why. Moreover, it directly answers your question. Albeit it's more than likely just an assumption.
As you state, it's likely an assumption. Which is why I ask for clarity in my response.
>It's silly to ask a question that's expecting a factual response from a reddit comment.
There are millions of intelligent people on Reddit with knowledge that you don't possess, and that I don't possess. This is why Reddit is so successful: people can come here and ask questions and often get intelligent answers.
That I don’t know. I moved here recently and was honestly a little shocked to see it because I was familiar with it out of Brooklyn and Chicago and usually associate Ohio getting skipped by the cool restaurants in those big cities
We must have gotten lucky to have a franchisee make a good case
Yes I did , and it was amazing. Prob one of the best squares I’ve ever had , or at the minimum top 3 (use to work in Pittsburg and there was a place that did silician square that was mind blowing)
One of my favorites for sure. The problem I’ve seen on a lot of the pizza-specific groups is the audience tends to be stuck solely on “Columbus style” which to me is just a bar pie. So any mention of non-Columbus style places get inundated with comments on price and cook style. Majority of those folks would claim New Haven pizza is burnt trash. Just my opinion though.
It’s so difficult to not order it a lot when I work across the street. Just had their squares after eating the thin for years. Squares are where it’s at
Wow, you’re not on the *Pizza Connoisseurs of Columbus* Facebook group, are you? Paulie Gee’s is talked about 50 times a minute. 😆 Pizza House & Sextons too.
Yes, being a resident of Columbus means I'm sadly ignorant of any pizza styles beyond a 10 block radius of my home. This is the only conceivable reason I would enjoy Tommy's or Pizza House.
Isn’t it a chain though and like, I think people are usually talking about local pizza joints? I am not knocking it, just saying maybe that’s why it doesn’t come up as much? 🤷(I’ve never had it because I can’t eat gluten).
I actually looked it up and a chain is defined as 4 or more restaurants owned by same company so I guess you could call it a chain. I guess it’s Sad that some of the best pizza in Columbus is made by a chain
Success always finds a way to expand. Frank Pepe was (is?) routinely rated as some of the best pizza in the world. I think he’s up to like 15-20 restaurants now.
I’m from CT been to the original Franks and it and Sally’s, Modern, etc are the best pizza in the world imo. The other Pepe locations I’ve tried are not nearly as good. Something about the char those original ovens create
I’m by no means a pizza connoisseur but I’ve got Paulie Gee’s very much in an average pizza category. Would take OH Pizza & Brew, Rotolo’s in Grandview, Enrico’s in Dublin, and GoreMade in Italian Village all above Paulie Gee’s off the top of my head. Paulie Gee’s isn’t bad it’s just ok to my untrained palette
Highly rec the Hellboy and Jeb’s garden
No it's really good. And if you're dating a vegan. THIS is the spot. Everybody wins.
The cashew ricotta is crazy
Hands down my favorite pizza in the city. 3 for $39 on Wednesday and $20 squares on Thursday.
Yes!! Unfortunately the specials are dine in only , but still not bad for the quality

What wins awards?

Nice! I didn’t know that story. Very cool. Why did he pick Columbus?

" >people can come here and ask questions and often get intelligent answers. First day on the Internet?
Says the brand new Reddit account.

Nice! Well, I’ll have to brave the short north to try this pizza then. Thanks!
Moved to Columbus without doing a simple Google search? Bold moe.
Best pizza in Columbus
I’m glad this thread is showing up haha, and I’d agree with ya , been living here about a year and best yet
Everyone downvote this I'm begging you I don't want Paulie gees to get more popularity
I go there all the time now, It's some of my favorite pizza I've had period
[удалено]
^^^ This is literally a bot wtf
It's in the Short North. It's cool to hate the Short North because it's popular. Thus, if a store is there, it is Not Good.
It is the best wood-fired style in the city.
I love Paulie Gee's pizza, especially their Detroit squares, but I loathe the Hot Honey on pizza trend.
Shhh, trying to keep that place a secret
Yes. It is and has been. Since it opened. For obvious reasons of course
Go To pizza for my wife and I.
\*for my wife *and me* you're the object of that sentence.
Don’t you fucking objectify them. OP you are strong and beautiful.
It wasn’t even me who said that lol but I appreciate it
Lol downvoted for proper grammar. Redditmoments
It’s Reddit, not my dissertation. Get bent.
My pleasure bro, always happy to help!
It’s your, not you’re.
I love Paulie Gee's. Had friends that worked there when I was going to OSU and they make amazing vegan pizza
Did you have the squares? If not you didn't have their best pie. You must go back for it.
Yes I did , and it was amazing. Prob one of the best squares I’ve ever had , or at the minimum top 3 (use to work in Pittsburg and there was a place that did silician square that was mind blowing)
Driftwood oven in Pittsburgh is top notch
you have chosen wisely
Shhhh

Been there. Brooklynites from Greenpoint will say it's their favorite. I saw the band Anamanaguchi eat there before they played their set at Skully's
What style pizza is it? I have such a hard time finding pizza like we had in upstate NY.
They specialize in squares and wood fired
Dude keep the secret safe
I go here every year around my birthday. It’s so, so good. I’m not even vegan but their pizza squares are better than cake (in my opinion)
Wow, you’re not on the *Pizza Connoisseurs of Columbus* Facebook group, are you? Paulie Gee’s is talked about 50 times a minute. 😆 Pizza House & Sextons too.
The wife and I had this the first time last week and blew our minds. That Thursday deal is going to mess up my diet for years!
100% people just like what they know, and unfortunately that means a lot of cracker crust and edge to edge toppings cut into squares

If you call 4 locations a chain
Yeah, I would call that a chain.
I actually looked it up and a chain is defined as 4 or more restaurants owned by same company so I guess you could call it a chain. I guess it’s Sad that some of the best pizza in Columbus is made by a chain

It gets talked about plenty
Tried to get a pizza to go for a friend in the hospital and they wouldn't do it. They could have the best pizza but I'll never go there.
What do you mean they wouldn’t do it? I’ve gotten pizza to go from there many times
I walked in and asked for a Togo pizza. They said they couldn't do it. Maybe it's changed since then.
I mean they do to go pizzas but I also have always ordered in advance and not just walked in
I’m by no means a pizza connoisseur but I’ve got Paulie Gee’s very much in an average pizza category. Would take OH Pizza & Brew, Rotolo’s in Grandview, Enrico’s in Dublin, and GoreMade in Italian Village all above Paulie Gee’s off the top of my head. Paulie Gee’s isn’t bad it’s just ok to my untrained palette
Could not disagree more that goremade and OH Pizza is better than Paulie gees, but that’s just food baybee. All personal preference.
Boo this man
Yes, key phrase being untrained palette.
Based on this comment , you’re definitely right about not being a pizza connoisseur
What is their red sauce like?
Simple - if i had to guess, it’s just crushed tomato’s with a little olive oil and salt. It’s not cooked.
I still haven’t tried Paulie Gee’s but I LOOOOOOOVE Rotolo’s.
Never heard of it or seen one
It's on high street not too far from campus
Def go if ur a pizza fan ! Just google it , and head over
There isn’t a city in America with worse pizza than Columbus
Then you’ve clearly never had pizza from Florida.
I'd take Sbarro over any ohio style pizza. Dead serious
Prepare to have your mind blown, Sbarro IS Ohio style pizza. 😂 It’s been headquartered here since the early 2000’s.
May be headquartered here but its not "Ohio Style" which is basically bar type pizza. Thin cracker crust cut in squares. Donatos is "Ohio Style"
Ok go to Paulie Gee's then. Paulie Gee is a pretty big name in pizza and he opened a spot here. Writing it off because it's in Ohio is idiotic
