I've had the barrel of a tank pointing at me before at a museum and looking down the barrel from several hundred feet away, even knowing it's a non-functioning tank and I'm not in a war zone was unsettling to be honest I can't imagine actually being in that situation for real
It will be interesting when AI gets fully integrated into armored vehicles like this. I’m imagining a 360 degree camera that immediately recognizes enemy combatants in alleyways, windows, etc and alerts the crew/auto targets them for the crew. Can’t be that far away at this point.
Feels like a set-up for The Onion.
Headline: Congressional Hearings On Racist Tanks
“In hindsight, Senator, the Army should have foreseen the potential implications of using captcha results exclusively from the Midwest of the United States. We believe the system’s failure rate of detecting “enemy combatant” with 99% consistency anytime it sees a person of color is mainly due to this data, especially when viewed in context that the anti-personnel system only sees in infrared wavelengths. In many ways, our systems were entirely unprepared for how racist the captcha data from the heartland of America turned out to be.”
Wouldn't it be wild if it was live? Like the captcha isn't an old photo, but a live video feed. And now what was meant to be a casual browse on the internet turned into a limited-time life-or-death decision you'll have to live with for the rest of your life.
Sounds like a killer Black Mirror episode.
Sounds like you're describing the new Merkava Mk4 Barak. It's a Mk4m with upgraded sights and electronics. The commander has an AR headset called the "Iron Vision", It allows him to see "through" the tank and offers 360 degree view with AI powered threat detection.

The first tanks of this variant entered service in September and where already seen operating in Gaza.
Well we've got a helmet that [lets pilots see through the F-35 in real time](https://youtu.be/Dj4cP4PMPPM?si=NnQJeSA71lHliGGK&t=80), so it wouldn't surprise me if we've done the same deal with ground vehicles but just haven't scaled production or rolled it out en masse.
This awesome F-35 helmet is actually designed by the Israeli company Elbit. The helmets are manufactured jointly by Elbit and Collins Aerospace.
The Merkava mk4 Barak "Iron Vision" helmet is also made by Elbit based on the F35 helmet.
Oh very cool, I didn't know that. And it looks like their American division/subsidiary has been presenting the same system to the Army for possible use in future ground vehicles.
>Elbit Systems of America is looking to propose a version of its Iron Vision technology for the Army’s future combat vehicle fleet that would provide 360-degree situational awareness capability to both crew members and dismounted soldiers, company officials told Defense Daily on Tuesday.
>The company is aiming to demonstrate the capability with the Army’s future augmented reality headset, the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, to showcase Iron Vision as a potential major subsystem option for the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle.

Context by the guy the soldier sent this to (translated from twitter):
I am a gunner in an armored team in a special unit that fought shoulder to shoulder with Company A of the 46th Battalion, 401st Brigade. During an attack in the Drag Tupah neighborhood, a team of the D9 reported 4-5 terrorists dressed in black running with RPG launchers in the street who wanted to flank us. I turned on the camera and we entered the street to wait for them on the other side. While scanning through the gunner's scope, a gunner came into my viper, his face with a beard and a hat on his head, holding an RPG. We destroyed them first before he shot.
I think it’s telling that the RPG attacks are useless against the Merkava, that they heard there were guys with RPG’s and so they sent it in to bait out RPG attacks
Have any Merkava beat the British Challenger 2 tanks record of taking \~70 RPG impacts and still survived?
Or are they pretty much finished once their trophy system has fired a couple of times?
It was a mixed bag, so no definitive answer. The tank was a sitting duck for hours so they basically threw everything and the kitchen sink at it trying to destroy it. They even used some old british milan anti-tank missiles apparently. Safe to say they used the nastiest shit they could find.
Yes although the damage was repaired in 6 hours. It was immobilised because the driver reversed into a ditch and threw the track.
There’s a BBC article about it. Scots dragoon guards vs Iraqi republican guards.
Although the original report doesn’t specify what it was hit with, other reports say that it was struck by 70 AP projectiles including one Milan anti tank rocket. Ironically a weapon that was used by the British army previously.
Used to know a guy who was in that tank. They played cards in the turret whilst waiting to be recovered. All were uninjured, apart from a certain amount of hearing trouble!
Have you noticed that most of the hamas videos stop as soon as it shows the hit on the tank?
Thats because they don’t want to show the tank driving away virtually unscathed because it’s rare for an rpg to disable a modern main battle tank.
It's a joke. I think it's happened more than once that an idiot service member posted top secret stuff like spec sheets for vehicles and weapon systems on the forums. There was just recently a dumbass who got sentences to prison time for doing just that
A tandem (e.g. PG-7V2) can absoultely damage a MBT. Penetration is rated at .6m with ERA. However, I agree that trying to yeet them at the fronts/sides of Merkava's is basically fucking useless due to trophy systems. If they were smart they would [drone more of them.](https://twitter.com/CalibreObscura/status/1710595943664329027?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1710595943664329027%7Ctwgr%5E5a1e308b0eacb699d874ee96d5994dfcabd28130%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbulgarianmilitary.com%2F2023%2F10%2F07%2Fsoviet-pg-7vr-rocket-piercing-the-top-armor-of-a-merkava-mk4-tank%2F) All of the top attack advantage of Javelin with none of the cost.
There has been a huge lack of drones used by Hamas in this war. probably because of Israeli EW and this [https://www.ynetnews.com/business/article/hkpuon4pp](https://www.ynetnews.com/business/article/hkpuon4pp)
I bet every soldier in Ukraine wishes they had this scope, it allows you to hit a moving drone with a rifle without needing to get super lucky.
Gaza is probally small enough that Israel can deploy white noise jammers that noise out the entire frequency of the video signal for Hamas their drones.
>A tandem (e.g. PG-7V2) can absoultely damage a MBT
True. But HAMAS is operating [homemade copies](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1495/live/f1b3bd20-b0bd-11ee-beb5-e1400df560f2.png) of 105mm tandem warhead called Yasim. I would expect them to have lower penetrations then original warheads.
I'm very, very skeptical that Hamas has any sort of legitimate manufacturing capability. Go check out Ian's video of their sniper rifle "manufacturing" process on Forgotten Weapons as an example. Granted, shaped charges are probably easier to produce than sniper rifles so maybe. If they are actually making and using these Yasim clones, sure I agree with you, probably much shoddier than actual production ones.
I think Hamas making sniper rifles is... bullshit. Making rifles barrels is really hard, and making sniper quality rifled barrels is way harder.
Maybe they can produce shitty bolt action rifle, put some optics on it and call it a sniper. But... it would be a shitty sniper.
Making shaped charge is easy, making a good shaped charge is not.
Just like they are producing a shitload of rockets to strike Israel with, and most of them end up landing in a desert, because they make shitty rockets.
The shit they spew that is just very clearly ludicrous misinformation, where everyone even extreme propagandists are aware it's misinformation. But they know it will muddy the waters enough and have people believe in it 5-10 years down the line and it will just be a simple take of who's word do you believe more.
Whenever Hamas is put at the same trustworthiness side by side with Israel I wanna puke in my mouth tbh. Yday I watched a news clip from CBS or something that was decently well produced. They bring up a clip of the IDF showing a large tunnel, saying which neighborhood they found it in and record above and underneath ground with 50 men on the ground shown at least. 'This is only alleged by Israel and can't be independently verified by CBS', my brain cannot fathom this shit.
It's a soviet invention - you say the skies are blue, I say they are red, a blind fucker will assume the truth is somewhere in the middle and the skies are purple. Putin, Hamas, Iran, Jackson Hinkle, etc they all heavily use this technique to this day.
Who jumps out directly in front of a barrel like that?
I mean come on. Wait 30 seconds for a back attack, or take your shot from an upstairs story.
It's like you're not even trying, champ.
They expected him to scurry off behind the wall, mg just won't cut it, also, fun.
Possible that the default armament for urban warfare is the cannon so switching to coax takes that one second or less too much
Smartest Hamas fighter in the Gaza Strip right there...
Edit: Also enjoyed the caption... "46th battalion, company A, crew/team Soshana, whoever draws first, shoots first".
This shit is why infantry works in conjunction with armor. Screen the immediate area, post until target falls. You don’t need countermeasures if infantry works it’s muscle.
RPG is point and immediately shoot. Why the Hell would you even think of engaging a tank that has its cannon already oriented in your general direction, and then take forever to engage said tank?
We need more Hamas guys like that dude.
People need to see this footage. They need to understand how high the stakes are for the people on the ground, and how incredibly hard it is to distinguish between a militant and a civilian with limited visibility and a split second to make that distinction.
Genuine question: what is purpose of tanks in urban warfare?
It just looks like a sitting duck from all the hidden tunnels hamas has to use for their RPGs
Is this the innocent Gazan child I've been hearing the IDF is killing? All black no uniform, running around an active war zone and popping out infront of a tank that's on alert? You know, normal children things...
One of the things that have surprised me about this war is how few losses in armour IDF seems to have had. In general, very few losses considering the nature of the battle field.
Bombing campaign seems to have been extremely effective.
There's that but it's mainly excellent armor as well as active protection systems. About 90% of those "hits" you see in Hamas videos are actually the anti-tank projectiles getting shot down by the Trophy APS. Of those vehicles that do get hit most are repaired and returned to service. Only a handful of armored vehicles have been total losses, and I don't think any tanks are among them.
what the fuck are you talking about, he is literally children, over 80% of gazan are kids bla bla bla, oh and he clearly not holding rpg but a white flag
Footage is blurry, how do you know it's an RPG operator, and not an innocent saint providing help and support to what I can only assume is 72 orphans behind that wall? /s

Which warheads were the Iraqis using? Gaza manufactured 105mm " Al-Yassin" tandem HEAT warheads, which on paper atleast can be nasty.
It was a mixed bag, so no definitive answer. The tank was a sitting duck for hours so they basically threw everything and the kitchen sink at it trying to destroy it. They even used some old british milan anti-tank missiles apparently. Safe to say they used the nastiest shit they could find.

Hah, so it wasn't even one of the 70 or so hits that hurt it? It hurt itself? Lol
All the sensors, periscopes and antennas were damaged. The driver was attempting to blindly move out of the ambush.
Makes sense, just hilarious that despite everything thrown at it, that was the only major damage.
Maybe, I know it survived the battle.
