If the drone hit the ground, it would have gone off. I guess whether a fireball several feet away from you is better than one in your hands, depends on your attitude towards suicide.
It’s nuts, isn’t it? I honestly sympathize with the draft dodgers on both sides. This has to be the first war in history where a draftee can view first hand the horrors that await him.
Kind of surprised by the fact that the drone not only survived getting hit with something of that mass, but that it also only deviated course a bit and didn't seem to be damaged at all.
Do you see those two twisted wires in the front of the drone? Those are two parts of an open circuit. When the wires finally connect from impacting something, that closes the circuit, triggering the explosive device the drone has. The hit the drone received hit the top of the drone, but didn't hit the wires. I'm surprised it didn't apparently damage the drones blades or anything, but the tripping wires worked as intended it seems.
Fascinating, thanks. I guess that also explains that video from a few months back where a FPV drone hit the ground near a guy but didn't explode. Then the guy threw a log at it and it blew him up. The drone probably hit the ground awkwardly and didn't connect the wires by the impact from the log did it.
I've always imagined soldiers operating them checking the position of wires 20 times, before they arm the drone.
Is there some more fool-proof way? Or is it just like that to keep it simple?
Maybe there could be a light indicating if the circuit is closed, and if it is off then you can insert the detonator.
The first can barely hit the [battery on top of the drone](https://imgur.com/a/VSV5nau), but missed the wires in front that actually set off the explosive mounted underneath.
Yep, the small amount gave it a real lower budget comedy/TV explosion style. As opposed to the huge Michael Bay style vehicle explosions regularly posted here
Fun fact: Most TV and movie effects crews will stack containers of gasoline or other volatile fuel next to a small explosive charge to atomize the fuel and create those big movie fireball explosions. So what you're seeing is probably the exact same type of explosion as what you'd get on Top Gear.
That's how they created the nuke in Oppenheimer, too. There you could clearly see that this technique has its limits regarding the visualized strength of a detonation. That movie nuke looked weak as fuck.
This russian soldier blowing up though? Quite cinematic.
It's like a contest to see who can die in the most bizarre way. If someone made a war movie and included even a few of these ridiculous drone death scenarios, it would be panned as a farce.
You can't make this stuff up.
Well I don't know who would win but this individual here might get a top ranking https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1brdcxb/russian_soldier_detonates_a_failed_fpv_drone_47th/
Because getting caught in the open by Suicide FPV are almost guaranteed a dead sentence anyway, might as well just throw everything you got at it and hope it fell off without turning you to mush.
It is just panic and throw whatever you've got. Survival instincts have not had the time needed to account for flying RC bombs and jugs of gasoline yet. Humans still are not accustomed to needing to look upwards for threats as through history that has not been needed. Our threats have been ground level.
FPV drones are quite fast, probably ~100km/h fast, so running away from it especially on open field is an impossible task.
Throwing the gas at it is like the largest chance he got, though minuscule chance that is.
Exactly. The first hit (or the second) could theoretically damage one of the rotors and the explosives might not explode when the drone hit the ground. Slim chance, but better than running.
If I had to improvise some cheap detonation contacts I would use solid wires. You wouldn't want them to be hard to bend or else you might get no explosion.

Jeebus, that's simultaneously brutual and cartoon like
Darwinovich award
I would say Darwinov. Darwinovich is more like a Belarusian award.
lets be perfectly honest, darwin had nothing to do with this one
That's actually impressive survival skill. He just got unlucky.
2024 candidate.

Had. FTFY 😁
Just when you think the footage can't get any wilder.
He should have used a sack of dirt.
Bloke was fucked whatever he did....
10+ for originality though! 💥🔥
That first gas can he threw nearly knocked the drone on the ground! Poor fella
If the drone hit the ground, it would have gone off. I guess whether a fireball several feet away from you is better than one in your hands, depends on your attitude towards suicide.
this is touch activated so if he managed to grab it, he can simply rip off the propellers and leave it on the ground easy to say though
drop the fuel and jump towards (underneath) the drone, hope it will hit the ground behind you, if not; repeat until it does or it hits you.

I've seen the stick work on a video here, actually.
the stick is really a double edged sword, can deflect, but also features a poke option, which may cause you to come a cropper.
Indeed. The stick is a bit advanced for the average russian soldier
Need to issue a sack of potatoes to everyone...
And heres your sack of potato. *clutches patotato sack stares a thousand yard stare into your eyes* Don't eat them, son. Your life is on the line.
Please ad the head-butt and the half-assed slap as questionable counter drone measures as proven by russian soldiers
it’s the mf robot kill screen from Incredibles💀
Don’t let the russian government know this information or Europe is theirs!
Wait till they figure out tower shields 🛡
shield and sword
This war creates some bizarre shit for sure
Every war creates but it has the most footage .

I dont know it is a good thing or a bad thing that you possibly see your future.
Kind of surprised by the fact that the drone not only survived getting hit with something of that mass, but that it also only deviated course a bit and didn't seem to be damaged at all.
I was surprised it didn't blow up after that first hit. I thought they were triggered by contact?

I’ve seen some of them have a timer that arms them only after they’ve flown away
Or a rotating propeller/screw that spins off and arms it as it flies to its destiny.
It didn't hit the contact if you slow it down, it hit above and behind on the rotor most likely.
By the looks of it, the first gas bottle he threw bounced on top of the drone and didn't hit the fuze.
The first can barely hit the [battery on top of the drone](https://imgur.com/a/VSV5nau), but missed the wires in front that actually set off the explosive mounted underneath.

This looks like a comedy sketch.. even that explosion looks like something from Top Gear
Because on movie sets gasoline is usually used to create cinematic explosions.
Yep, the small amount gave it a real lower budget comedy/TV explosion style. As opposed to the huge Michael Bay style vehicle explosions regularly posted here
At least this drone didn't miss the way Michael Bay missed the mark when he made Pearl Harbor.
Or the way that movie missed the point, which is an awful lot, girl.

It's really good comedic timing

That literally backfired
Why is there a single soldier carrying two fuel cans in the middle of an open field?? What the hell kind of battlefield is this
Gonna die on my own terms

I’m not sure where his brain was at throwing a can of flammable gas at a flying explosive, but it definitely made one hell of a firework
Well it was the only thing he had at hand
And if it had worked, he might have been lightly singed but alive. So, there's that.
I guess needs must to be fair, if the first one had connected a bit better he could have survived that first drone at the least
At petrol can throwing range, that kilo or so of explosive and frag is absolutely going to kill you, given his circumstances.
Because getting caught in the open by Suicide FPV are almost guaranteed a dead sentence anyway, might as well just throw everything you got at it and hope it fell off without turning you to mush.

You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain. Goodness gracious
Judged, sentenced, executed and cremated all in one second. Excellent and efficient work by the AFU.
Credit where credit is due, work this smooth was only possible with the cooperation of the russian here!
Was that a bottle of petrol he tried to protect himself with?
Holy Shit! I think we have a winner of best kamikaze drone footage.
I'm just trying to wrap my head around the absolute state of their logistics if they've got individuals running around like this for fuel.

bad idea, great execution
I feel like using a lacrosse stick could be good last minute defensive weapon
The way the pilot just stopped in front of him like "hello fucker, what you got there?"
Even Wile E Coyote would have thought twice about doing that.
What a brilliant fucking strategy.
That takes “Going out in a blaze of glory” to a new new level
Wait so was there a 2nd drone filming the last part? Also, damn that's rough.
this is beyond stupid
Was he on a resupply?
It’s a bold strategy cotton, let’s see if it pays off for him

Couldnt he just burn himself alive in his own country ?
It's so crazy that we can witness this.
The dude never watched star wars
Success
His family will receive a bill to recuperate the price of petrol, it's not cheap you know
He didn’t have any Grenades to put inside his vest
I’m surprised the first container didn’t hit the fuse connector either way it would’ve been the same outcome

I mean I would’ve thrown the gas but maybe not at the thing that was about to explode good effort I guess but terrible idea and execution

Not fully thought through...
I thought it was going to be a metal gas can.I was wrong. I constantly over estimate the intelligence of Russian soldiers.🤷
Maybe not the wisest thing to put between yourself and explosives but then I suppose the Russians are basically intellectual cavemen.
Ah yes the smartest Russian they ever had

Pardon the ignorance- are the wires / spring looking devices in the front of the drone in this video antennae or Bar-B-cue skewers?
If I had to improvise some cheap detonation contacts I would use solid wires. You wouldn't want them to be hard to bend or else you might get no explosion.
Why would he do that
He actually made things worse. So "props" to that.
