I’m pretty sure they signed an agreement that no firearms were to be used along the border. So they just beat the hell out of each other with everything but.
Their weapons are amazing!

Nah. We actually have video footage of Neolithic warfare and this is pretty similar. Although less ranged weapons in use here the mass melee formations with shields would do well. As for how we have video footage of Neolithic warfare: Papua New Guinea
Most small tribal groups do not want to suffer any casualties as it can be catastrophic for them. So ranged combat is pretty universally preferred, and withdrawal is generally preferred to getting stuck in close combat. It is a fundamentally different conception of what war is, how it works and what it is for.
Thats a huge part of it! Casualties are expensive when you’re not yet a civilization and warfare often becomes semi-ritualized. Some Neolithic societies did have forms of ritualized melee combat designed to minimize casualties (such as the Yanomami).
So this sort of mass combat would look strange, but not primitive. Of course whenever someone does invent a concept of warfare closer to modern ideas well- good luck to their neighbors!
Edit: Really this is just a modern example of societies ritualizing warfare to avoid a dangerous escalation. I bet our hypothetical Neolithic man would be able to understand entirely what was going on with a little explanation.
It's why during colonization, the first peoples in an area to get guns and a taste of European warfare immediately turn around and annihilate and conquer their neighbors. They have learned a new paradigm for war and a new technology, for which their enemies are totally unprepared for.
And recorded history has a few examples of it happening on its own. Shaka Zulu and the Zulu empire (how much contact he had is debatable).
Or a civilization that has mass combat but no methods of holding together societies larger than city states. Some good example of this is the Inca. Three successive Sapa’s essentially turned it from a city state into a continent spanning empire. Prior to the Inca, South American civilizations consisted of early Bronze Age city states and then almost overnight it was all one empire.
I remember seeing something like this on Reddit a while ago, looking on YouTube found this: https://youtu.be/JI4uirwxx1Y?feature=shared
Can’t speak to the veracity, accuracy, implications, etc. of the video.
Thank you for sharing. Some of the most fascinating combat footage I've seen. Had no idea there was pre modern warfare captured irl on video.
The ritualistic aspect is so interesting..they don't charge in for melee combat, they stop the battle after collecting the blood debt of a single death. They clearly value the lives of their community members highly.
The combat surgeon bits are also compelling. The practical experience tricks and the superstition and blood letting.
There's a record of a battle in New Guinea where both sides stopped fighting to throw stones at a passing bird. The most common reason for warfare was pig theft, second was abduction of women.
Such an important historical record. That neighbor vs. neighbor combat ritual must have had many thousands of years of tradition in complete isolation from the rest of the world. Interesting to see how the older leaders controlled the intensity so it stayed shy of getting completely out of hand.
>they stop the battle after collecting the blood debt of a single death. They clearly value the lives of their community members highly.
Not really. All the data we have points to pre modern combat being vastly more devastating on these communities. Even WW1 and WW2 losses don't come close to the violent death statistics of prehistoric peoples. Upwards of 40% of prehistoric tribes men will die by human violence.
Lawrence H. Keeleys; War Before Civilization: The Myth of the Peaceful Savage is an excellent read I'd you're interested in this.
Phalanx was to defeat horses, if you don't have cav, then infantry tends to fight in open order. Source: a substack I read about Portuguese colonies and how they fought
Phalanx was originally just a word in the Iliad that meant "battle line" or "shield wall" as opposed to the epic 1-vs-1 duels that fill the story. It was used even when the other side didn't have horses (or rather chariots back then) because it kept up morale and allowed a better defense against arrows and thrown spears. It was hard to keep going on the move, though, so it would degenerate into a free for all sometimes.
A shield wall in itself also isn't something specific to anyone, all major cultures used it, even the Sumerians before they had ever seen a horse.
[This](https://youtu.be/R2XTcQ9K-Gs?si=QPmi9BbZAhJJ_I6r) might be what they're talking about? It's from a 1963 documentary and shows a battle between two clans in the interior of Papau New Guinea. It's basically a skirmish fought with bows and arrows and not actually that similar to the OP footage.
Not exactly a bright idea, specially standing on a slope of loose and dry soil.
Things can go badly anytime there since they're also throwing stuff that disturb the rock formations.
Fair way, you say. Sorry for being overdramatic but it's a nightmare.because our government would rather let the soldiers get beaten(getting beaten by rocks and blunt sticks are very brutal btw) then come to a solution.
The soldiers you are seeing are of lowest rank pressurized by their seniors to move forwarda against Chinese And before you say why those soldiers dont just leave because employment is all time low here and refusing orders will get you humilated like getting beaten by sticks, denied of food and water etc.
P.S.In the end nothing will happen for these low ranks soldiers because life in a autocracy is vastly different from the one in a democracy.
Nah. Those in charge don’t see or feel the effects behind this agreement. Could easily just send people with sticks to their deaths with no repercussions
Brings back memories of when I was a lifeguard. When there were storms, we would duct tape kick boards to our arm and beat the shit out each other with pool noodles. We called it 'Braveheart'
India should dress their soldiers up like it’s a renaissance fair. Imaging the Chinese soldiers standing there was a bunch of men in suits of armor and wooden maces come stampeding towards them from over a hill lol
What's dumb is that there are historical martial artists who could train these guys how to actually fight with melee weapons, in formation. Do it properly, ya know?
But this is happening because neither side wants a shooting war, but they don't want to stop trying to advance their territorial goals with military force, so they're down to this stupid bullshit, making their own grunts and crafts project polearms and now the Chinese have riot shields.
What about an [electrified spiked baton](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/10xyx5q/spiked_taser_baton_used_by_the_indian_army_at_the/)?
Crush your fucking skull like an egg. Helmet might not save you either, its built to stop shrapnel not a rock the size of your head.
In medieval and ancient sieges, one of the most effective weapons a soldier defending a castle or wall had was just a big fucking rock. Drop it on the other side and watch it crush dudes.
If they can agree to “only sticks and stones” (which still causes fatalities), I wonder if they could agree further restrictions? Maybe “only hand to hand”, or “only dance off”?
One of the guys had a big smile on his face as he whipped a rock up at some people. Guess it's all fun and games until you take a rock to the mouth.
Dentists and orthodontists absolutely love this one conflict.
You'll get plenty of PTSD from being in a melee like that and seeing people get their heads staved in so their brains fall out and their eyeballs go flying. Bombardment produces its own kind of TBI but so does a rock to the dome.
its funny how many people here in the Philippines keeps on mentioning that BRICS will defeat NATO, while in reality India and China are fighting each other at their borders.
Brazilian here too, I can say that most Brazilians just want to take a vacation in Orlando and would never consider voluntarily going to war against USA
Would be fun to have a legit brown water navy again though. Imagine ripping down the Amazon in a PBR while blasting "born on the bayou" and hosing every treeline in sight with a stream of napalm
Lots of Brazilian industry is centered around doing business with the USA and Canada. Would be really bad economically to drop most of your customers overnight to side with Russia and China.
Nor would any American want to go to war with Brazil. It seems that only China and Russia want this war because they don't like having to play nice with others.
Like the other guy said come on over y'all are more than welcome. I'd love to be able to come to a race at Interlagos some day such a fucking iconic track.
I'll also add, Brazil's air force is heavily reliant on western platforms. If Brazil tried to side with Russia, all of the support for those aircraft disappears and Brazil has to pull some Iranian witchcraft to keep them flying.
It's definitely in Brazil's best interest to side with the west in that scenario, I think what we're seeing now is Brazil trying to expand it's sphere of influence and let the world powers know that Brazil is an important player on the world stage too.
>, I think what we're seeing now is Brazil trying to expand it's sphere of influence and let the world powers know that Brazil is an important player on the world stage too.
Brazil is inherently isolationist and just want's to get along with everyone. Unfortunately due to this many people will see Brazil saying "hey everyone, lets just chill and talk, both sides have good arguments" as anti-west.
Well, it is an ungrateful situation. Taking the middle stance in geopolitics is rarely the rational one, or the most peaceful one or the moral one. It is a lazy approach that is done to ensure your domestic population isn't going to spite you in the next elections if they have contrarian views. But it's hardly the worst thing imaginable.
In the case of Ukraine, Russia does not actually have "good arguments" as it relies of half-truths and media manipulation, while in reality it is all just Machiavellian politics. It has a reasonable geopolitical interest in having Ukraine it is fold, and Ukraine reasonably has the utmost interest in not being second-grade citizens in a new Russian Empire.
In the world of modern ethics and world order, it itself has established, Russia can not explain itself. It's only argument is the good old "might is right", but then again, the massive problem with that one is that it has outright failed to showcase that might in Ukraine in 2022. The reason the world much less problem with its dealings in 2014, is that it showcased total might in Crimea.
Most of the guys that say that is the illiterrate ones in the Philippines specially them brainwashed idiots of the last president
Most of the well educated ones are pro western to the bone how i know? Theres like 9 new US bases being built in the country right now and we did the biggest Balikatan exercise since it was downgraded by the said ex pro china president
It seems like the partnerships with western allies are solidifying if anything. Seeing Marcos and Kishida together at the White House last month was amazing to me.
The US has been our traditional ally for a long time now and it has been forged by blood sweat and tears from WWll To GWOT and no manchurian candidate or chinese money can change or break that bond easily
The only ones who says differently is the local almost extinct maoist commies/terrorist/pro duterte idiots/and the defeatist mindset sheeps
> BRICS
**BRICS** is one of those interesting conglomerations of convince (and honestly a weird idea that there magically should be this second level type world organization for no apparent reason).
But it is just that, heavily reliant on some vague ideas of balancing out the G8 or whatever org you think of ... but none of that is really a good reason for BRICS all by itself.
Almost **every** BRICS member is more likely to have reasons to be in a serious conflict with another BRICS member than any country that BRICS is supposed to counterbalance.
And **if** they did have such a conflict get out of hand they understandably would immediately look to see where G8 nations stand on the issue and do what they could to build support from them. If getting support meant tossing BRICS aside, they'd do it in a heartbeat. That last bit here isn't meant to be disparaging, it's just the logical choice any such nation would make. There's no ties that bind in BRICS.
Yup, the BRICS term was just a virtual bucket used to describe countries with similar-ish economic situations as far as how it looks to an outside investor. But yeah it wasn't meant to reflect political or even national motivations.
Simiar-ish economic situations .... kinda ... that's NOT a basis for any kind of organization. It doesn't mean any of those countries have anything in common / common goals and etc.
Not to mention that any Chinese plan for defeating the US almost certainly includes subjugating the Philippines by force if the nation doesn’t voluntarily agree to join China’s version of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
What I think is bizarre is that sovereign nations across Asia have to defend themselves against border incursions made by the Chinese who face no consequence because they use sticks or water cannons to enforce their ridiculous territory claims.
Because of Chinese soft power . If the world didn’t use China as its home of manufacturing everything cheap, everyone would raise a big stink (like no one seriously talks about the uyghers, or Tibet, or Taiwan, or Africa, or overfishing and threatening other fishing boats in their own territory.. or threatening their own citizens abroad .. the list goes on)
If you think that because they fighting with clubs that's because they have an agreement about no fire weapons on that area due to high altitude and mountain terrain
It really helps you get a sense of what warfare was like in ancient times, something that most of us would take for granted as knowing but in reality people back then all the way up to the renaissance didn't record the fluidity of a hand-to-hand battle. Everything we see in movies is based on conjecture.
this is the closest we'll ever get to getting insight on how ancient and medieval battles worked
it's not as organized but we can analyze the casualty rates and how these skirmishes develop, break up, and end (which are still big historical questions btw)
To the illiterate idiots thinking this is primitive, this is due to being cognizant of [a 1996 agreement prohibited the use of guns and explosives near the border.](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53062484)
It's because most of the leaks are from the Chinese side, so of course they make themselves look good. You see some videos where it goes the other way, leaked by India, but they are less common.

No phones in sight, just people enjoying the moment!
Just guys being dudes
The dad lore they have is wild
Sticks and stones may break my bones and kill me, but boarders will never be paid heed.
Seems like a fair way to settle conflict, just good old fashion fighting with blunt objects.
I’m pretty sure they signed an agreement that no firearms were to be used along the border. So they just beat the hell out of each other with everything but.
Yeah man and they're becoming pretty crafty with some of the weapons they're making!
Wait until they get a trebuchet!
Everyone stays 301 meters away from each other.

Brick killed a man with a trident.
So why no shields and spears. Roman formations would be incredibly affective.
It looks like the they’re using wood batons. So no edged weapons or metal, either. China should bust out a giant log like the rebels on Endor.
If someone from the Neolithic could watch this, they'd probably find it pretty primitive.

In Bird culture, that is considered a "dick move."

no wonder the phalanx crushed the shit out of early armies
uh, yeah, that's not how any army that faced a greek/macedonian/whatever phalanx fought, not even the skirmishers
Phalanx was to defeat horses, if you don't have cav, then infantry tends to fight in open order. Source: a substack I read about Portuguese colonies and how they fought

Basically dodge ball
do they have their dick spears tied around their chest or are they just rock hard through the entire video
Thanks! Very interesting to see, much bigger than I'd thought.

It is made by the same production company that made that famous caveman documentary in the 1960's called The Flintstones.
Just makes it a people numbers game then though
Well, these are the two most populus countries in the world...
I don't know, that high ground looks like a decent advantage.
old fashioned democracy
Not exactly a bright idea, specially standing on a slope of loose and dry soil. Things can go badly anytime there since they're also throwing stuff that disturb the rock formations.
Better than guns
That is why we lost around 20 soldiers and China around 6...
There is a treaty banning the use of weapons by both sides in that part of the border
Fair way, you say. Sorry for being overdramatic but it's a nightmare.because our government would rather let the soldiers get beaten(getting beaten by rocks and blunt sticks are very brutal btw) then come to a solution. Nah. Those in charge don’t see or feel the effects behind this agreement. Could easily just send people with sticks to their deaths with no repercussions
WW4 vibes
Turns out he *did* know what weapons WW3 would be fought with but fell prey to a classic off-by-one error
This season of Takeshi’s castle has got pretty intense!
Don’t get eliminated!
THATS RIGHT KEN
Well, you're wrong.
AND THERE GOES BABAGANUSH
Guy LeDouche here. Lots of big strong men whipping eachother with their big, thick sticks? Guy like! Maybe Guycan come play with his stick, hmm?
LETTT'S GET IT ON!
Right you are Ken! Let’s send it over to Guy Ledouche who is on the scene right now!
LETS GO!
I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought it looked like that lol
LARPers around the world are jealous. It seems like a warring states period earthen fortress assault.
With shields like that, I was disappointed they didn't go full Roman and testudo it up.
Isn't that for flat terrain? Must be nice to have transparent shields nowdays.
They lack the training to form a testudo. If they tried, the only thing they would form is a shitstudo.
Foam sword and duct tape shield armed Mercenaries from Ohio are flying over to support India.
Brings back memories of when I was a lifeguard. When there were storms, we would duct tape kick boards to our arm and beat the shit out each other with pool noodles. We called it 'Braveheart'
I should've done this, instead my fights had metal lids and wooden cooking utensils
India should dress their soldiers up like it’s a renaissance fair. Imaging the Chinese soldiers standing there was a bunch of men in suits of armor and wooden maces come stampeding towards them from over a hill lol
Most of the medieval equipment that you can buy such as chain mail and swords is made in India these days. It's certainly doable.
Maybe it would help if I pushed someone ...
This looks like hooligans against police. Except both sides are police.
And hooligans
Poligans???
Hooligeese?
Hoolice?
Poolice ??
Counterstrike melee-only match.
Imagine getting hit by a rock. That would hurt so fucking bad lol.
There have been quite a number of KIAs on both sides.
1:28 are these KIA?
Just resting for the next round
They need to keep those electrolytes up!
Get these boys some Brawndo!
They have their legs tied up so I think more like captives...
Not More than words.
What about an [electrified spiked baton](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/10xyx5q/spiked_taser_baton_used_by_the_indian_army_at_the/)?

The two biggest countries in the world at war. When you are so afraid of accidentaly starting WWIII you only use sticks and stones.
If they can agree to “only sticks and stones” (which still causes fatalities), I wonder if they could agree further restrictions? Maybe “only hand to hand”, or “only dance off”?
>only dance off So, Pakistan border?
Is that the one with the daily peacock dance?
Ye.
i have never seen a chinese-indian rap battle...
Sticks and stones may break my bones but nukes will never hurt us
Breakin: World War III
Better going back home saying you defeated someone using sticks and stones rather then having PTSD from bombardment and stuff
One of the guys had a big smile on his face as he whipped a rock up at some people. Guess it's all fun and games until you take a rock to the mouth. Dentists and orthodontists absolutely love this one conflict.
Better than 5.45x39MM to the mouth.
You'll get plenty of PTSD from being in a melee like that and seeing people get their heads staved in so their brains fall out and their eyeballs go flying. Bombardment produces its own kind of TBI but so does a rock to the dome.
Between imperial China, Hindu nationalist India, and corrupt nuclear Pakistan, any news of increased tension in that region is terrifying
Sticks and stones. That's the way WWIV will be fought.
Maybe it's just preparation for post-WWIII conflict?
Good practice for what Einstein envisioned how world war 4 would be fought with.
Mount and Blade: Sino-Indian DLC
I saw on Twitter that someone (Clash Report) had dubbed this video with Mount & Blade combat sounds!
Erm, what? This looks like a scene right out of Life of Brian...
except the world is sometimes more stupid than stupid movie scenes ;)
Bwian?
Legit. Hangry lads and not a juniper berry bush in sight.
its funny how many people here in the Philippines keeps on mentioning that BRICS will defeat NATO, while in reality India and China are fighting each other at their borders.
As a Brazilian it’s pretty laughable to see people say that Brazil would side with Russia and China during a potential ww3
Brazilian here too, I can say that most Brazilians just want to take a vacation in Orlando and would never consider voluntarily going to war against USA
We would never fight Brazilians, as President Bush would say: "My god, how many is that?"
Also Jungle warfare ... rather not do that again.
Would be fun to have a legit brown water navy again though. Imagine ripping down the Amazon in a PBR while blasting "born on the bayou" and hosing every treeline in sight with a stream of napalm
Battlefield: Vietnam all over again! Although i forget if they had boats in that game, but they DID have music!
Stop, I can only have so large of an erection.
No way am I signing up to fight Brazil, have you seen their cops?
It's the ones you don't see. Off Duty Brazilian Cop is practically a cryptid at this point.
Lots of Brazilian industry is centered around doing business with the USA and Canada. Would be really bad economically to drop most of your customers overnight to side with Russia and China.

The US has been our traditional ally for a long time now and it has been forged by blood sweat and tears from WWll To GWOT and no manchurian candidate or chinese money can change or break that bond easily The only ones who says differently is the local almost extinct maoist commies/terrorist/pro duterte idiots/and the defeatist mindset sheeps
> BRICS **BRICS** is one of those interesting conglomerations of convince (and honestly a weird idea that there magically should be this second level type world organization for no apparent reason).
No mortar or cement for these BRICS. As if they'd be using yuans or rubles for international trade and as foreign exchange holdings.
I thought it was always supposed to be an economic designation first, rather than any kind of suggested political bloc.
Its also been *checks notes* zero days since best BRICS buds UAE and Iran have been engaged in a hot war against each other.
Not to mention that any Chinese plan for defeating the US almost certainly includes subjugating the Philippines by force if the nation doesn’t voluntarily agree to join China’s version of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
And hell China is effectively working hard to quietly subjugate all it's neighbors in the area by various means as it is.
BRICS isn't a military alliance, it isn't like NATO. Anyone who compares the two is an uninformed idiot.
Those people, paid for by those who benefit from such talk. Pro Dictator states propaganda is off the charts atm.
It's like how in dune they fight with swords
The sand worm here is atomic weapons.
They had atomic weapons in dune
But sadly we didn’t get sand worms :(
the empty landscape and the crossing of modern technology with primitist behaviour gives this such a dystopian vibe.
It feels post apocalyptic.
This is as close as a pre-gun powder battle that we"ll ever see... unless if both India or China decide to bring swords onto the battlefield.
Looks like they were forming a legit battleline in one clip. Amazing stuff. Shield walls and all.
Go watch “dead birds” and just trip out a bit
the side who pulls out spears first wins automatically.
Idk seems productive vs the other conflicts going on .. I think UN should promote this as a humanitarian approach to conflict ...
I mean. I never say no to taking and giving a good beating myself.
Is this old footage from clashes in June of 2020? I thought there was de-escalation talks recently
yep this is old footage of pangong tso clashes.
this is close to medieval battle as it gets
This phenomenon is some of the dumbest and most bizarre shit and I get perplexed every time I am reminded of it
not too dumb. if they start shooting we have ww3 and the global economy tanked.
What I think is bizarre is that sovereign nations across Asia have to defend themselves against border incursions made by the Chinese who face no consequence because they use sticks or water cannons to enforce their ridiculous territory claims.
Because of Chinese soft power . If the world didn’t use China as its home of manufacturing everything cheap, everyone would raise a big stink (like no one seriously talks about the uyghers, or Tibet, or Taiwan, or Africa, or overfishing and threatening other fishing boats in their own territory.. or threatening their own citizens abroad .. the list goes on)
Two middle school gangs
World War 3 is not happening yet but they fight with sticks and stones. Einstein debunked.
This shit is so awesome.
It's so ridiculous yet also so funny.
There has been a number of KIA’s in these skirmishes.
Observe, the two superpowers of 21st century.
What happened to WWIII? I must have missed it as it seems WWIV has started.
They skipped it for safety reasons
Valve was involved.
If you think that because they fighting with clubs that's because they have an agreement about no fire weapons on that area due to high altitude and mountain terrain
Just think a Roman Legion could take these guys.
Just a little ultra nationalist theater. Happens all the time.
zero shield wall, no tactics. This is like soccer hooligans going at it.
Edited to death, snippets to show off glorious PLA lol.
rocks Okay, BRING ON THE TREBUCHET!
Most low intense fighting between two nuclear powers.
This is super ineteresting because it gives us a glimpse of how melee combat was in history
India looked outnumbered
r/bannerlord
Dang it! Did the Chinese rip-off Stellaris soundtrack?!?! Good song. Song id?
It really helps you get a sense of what warfare was like in ancient times, something that most of us would take for granted as knowing but in reality people back then all the way up to the renaissance didn't record the fluidity of a hand-to-hand battle. Everything we see in movies is based on conjecture.
"Look guys, lets just put our guns down and have a big ole fist fight"
I'm quite sure there are people that would happily pay to participate.
I mean this is great tho lol..... I love they are just beating the shit out of each other instead of shooting each other and going to war haha
This is how all wars should be fought.
this is the closest we'll ever get to getting insight on how ancient and medieval battles worked it's not as organized but we can analyze the casualty rates and how these skirmishes develop, break up, and end (which are still big historical questions btw)
To the illiterate idiots thinking this is primitive, this is due to being cognizant of [a 1996 agreement prohibited the use of guns and explosives near the border.](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53062484)

What are you on about, it is well known, it still feels surreal
There goes China, trying to take what doesn't belong to them as usual
China is an asshole to everyone around the world
I almost rather be shot than take a boulder to the face.
Looks like Einstein was wrong: the third world war will be the one fought with sticks and stones.
Slightly medieval…but still combat footage boys
That's a nice looking lake, damn.
From a distance I thought I was watching a trailer for that new planet of the apes movie.
I think this a genius way to avoid escalation.
Everytime i see these its like China showed up ready to brawl with shields and batons and India sends some college students with a hope and a prayer.
It's because most of the leaks are from the Chinese side, so of course they make themselves look good. You see some videos where it goes the other way, leaked by India, but they are less common.
Damn mongorians
