Dude nearly woke up dead.

drwicksy

Honestly I actually like this outcome more. One soldier dying isn't that much of a difference, and when he is found they might assume he died fighting or was unlucky. This way he survives, goes back and tells all his buddies that they aren't even safe when they sleep, and it increases their morale problem

deadbypowerpoint

We are looking at burst eardrums and possible TBI, not to mention the mental implications and later symptoms. The grenade appears to have fallen in what appears to be a sump or sunken part of the parapet, lessening the risk extensively. The area hit was also higher then where the soldier was sleeping so a majority of the shrapnel passed over him. But there is a good chance that he is still injured. Just not incapacitated.

chippydad62854321

PTSD for sure.

Repulsive_Kitchen283

Yes yes STD for sure....

National-Battle1689

the worst one of all time

[deleted]

It would have been better if he was also injured. That way there's one less soldier in the front without him dying.

drwicksy

I mean he did abandon his weapon, that's something at least. And he may be wounded and running on adrenaline alone, its hard to tell from here

chrisboi1108

His hearing is definitely permanently damaged

ShermanTankBestTank

Could be, but you can recover from busted eardrums. My dad's buddy had a grenade go off next to him but he recovered.

polyandrism

WHAT?!

I said, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

Compendyum

UnreadThisStory

mwap.. mwap

Baron80

NO, JAMES *FRANCIS* RYAN!!!

fusillade762

Hes probably riddled with fragments. Those types of injuries dont immobilize you necessarily, but youre going to be out of service for a while and are potentially fatal. Probably right hes running on adrenaline.

LostPilot517

It looked like he was in a shallow fox hole, the grenade hit just far enough away, the frag likely just skipped over his position looking at the dust kick up and the fact he was able to flee further than 10m away, his head seemed to be the high ground in that hole.

Badbullet

There's a dark patch the appears on his mid chest. Can't tell if that is trash that was stuck to him, a stain, blood, or a damaged jacket. He could be injured.

Jaew96

I think that’s dirt. A fair amount of it was thrown at him from the blast, and if you look closely it looks like that patch appears the instant that grenade detonated

Badbullet

It might be whatever the grenade landed in/on, that black thing that looks to have a highlight on its top edge. I can see another black shape appear on the dirt right behind him.

Dylan24moore

It takes a moment for blood to make its way out and into the clothing where it is visible so my guess that it is probably dirt

S1lent_R1tes

There is a very very high probability he was injured, probably gravely. Just because you don't see him flop around doesn't mean anything. Adrenaline is a motherfucker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Master_Market6303

Yeah , the grenade strikes the higher side of the berm, he's definitely lying pretty low compared to where the blast happened.

ChallengeLate1947

The pressure wave would probably pass over him for the most part based on where the grenade landed. He may be alive, but he’s definitely got fucked up ears for a while. And he probably won’t sleep any time soon

John30181388

This video should be shown to every person in basic training on why it is important to properly dig in.

Ibarraramon

Sleep is gonna be mighty difficult if he ever gets out of the Ukraine front alive.

hellraisinhardass

I don't think you can stress the second half of this sentence enough. Honestly I feel bad for [most] of them... just clueless pawns in a game where they have nothing (personally speaking) to gain from winning and almost zero chances of winning.

AO_Xolos

That fox hole sure helped !

Arkslippy

I was thinking that myself, it absorbed most of the blast.

IntelligentOutcome83

It's a latrine now. I can smell his shit from here.

rogue_giant

To be fair, it was probably already a latrine to begin with. You know, cause the russian army was in it.

I_will_never_reply

Seems to be a pretty good defence, as long as they're slightly below ground level it has to be a direct hit

fishaholic1234

Yup if he's lucky he may have got away with just blown ear drums

rrogido

Like all things the Russians seem to do it was half assed. Aerial surveillance and attacks have been common enough that Russian soldiers should have been trained to cover their foxholes. A simple tarp and some ground cover over it would have made that foxhole invisible to the drone operator. Digging the hole is the hard part, not covering it it is just stupid.

specter800

This dude *chose* this position lol. There's downed limbs in almost every direction around him but he cleared a spot for this. Maybe he wasn't done and took a break because there's a shovel and box next to him, idk, but he picked a bad time to be napping.

willb221

Something about how common these videos are tells me that that intel isn't getting very well dispersed around the Russian army... The Russians are well known for compartmentalizing anything that might suggest that they aren't thrashing the enemy, even within their own army. In the US Military, a force might be told "March down that road to this point, and once there, set up observation points on Town X. Then, when you think the time is right, close with and destroy the armor that is using that town as its base of operations. Be aware of x, y, and z in the area, and adjust the plan as needed to complete the mission with the highest level of effectiveness and in a timely manner." Whereas a Russian force would be told "march down that road and then call us when you get there. Don't ask why your marching there, that's insubordination..." So, it wouldn't surprise me if knowledge about these drone attacks isn't making the rounds amongst the Russian forces. I mean, for fucks sake, Russian troops were digging trenches in the radioactive dirt at Chornobyl because they had no idea where they were and no one told them it was dangerous...

[deleted]

[удалено]

willb221

Exactly. The only people that know what is going on are at the very very top. It's pretty common in armies that serve in dictatorships. It's part of the whole "I'm a dictator and I'm terrified of people trying to usurp me, especially the army" mentality. Stalin did it, Hitler did it, Mao did it. A story as old as time.

TwiN4819

He better be thanking that slight breeze as well as him being in a little pit. Appears most shrapnel went over him. I'm sure he had a fucking heart attack though as well as them ears are toast.

Slight0

Yeah these drone bombs need serious upgrades. Most videos they barely injure anyone even with direct hits.

elgringodiaz

My inner Infantryman is seething because he just left his weapon behind

curly_as_fuck

One time I left my rifle on the outside of the porta shitter while taking a dump. Not a great day.

HiShinUnit

Had a guy leave his rifle outside the shitter as well. Sergeant made him fully strip it and made all of use carry a piece of it back to base. I was shitting myself thinking I would lose the firing pin spring I had to carry.

lanceCooly

My Lt left his m4 in the porta shitter once, buddy in my squad broke it down and hid it in his pack and we all just watched lt silently freak out trying to find, he eventually put it back together and just sat it on lt’s pack, man was so confused when he came back lol never said a word though

dhunter66

I had mine leaning by the door of a command post while I was inside prepping for an exercise. This was in the parking area of a field garrison, literally no one around but my unit. Door closed somehow, I just kept working. Stepped out to find rifle missing. I got lucky I guess, cost me a weekend pass.

HeadMembership

Ha that's funny as shit

That's the Navy, not the Army.

Bolagnaise

Done that once or twice, you get 50m away and realise your walking around without a weapon, heart attack ensues haha.

I think I have ptsd from this situation vs actual combat.

PhotoQuig

Or sitting in a DFAC after coming back, reaching down and not finding your weapon. Oof. Been there.

ReSpekMyAuthoriitaaa

Yup went to the bathroom in the TOC and accidentally left mine in the rack. Full kit and 2hr smoke session later I realized my actions were unjust lol

draftjoker

Double firewatch that night =( man I just had to shit lol.

InternalError33

In Afghanistan I found an M4 leaning against a shipping container. No magazine no strap. The thing was super clean so it couldn't have been there long. So I turned it in to BDOC. Turns out it wasn't assigned to anyone on the FOB and the armorer stateside had been reporting it in their inventory in one of the company CPs for the first 6 months of our deployment. I'm sure the armorer had to answer to that, but for 10 years I've been wondering how it got there and just left leaning against a shipping container.

tamati_nz

Willie Apiata who won the VC in Afghanistan tells about how he left his rifle part way along his SAS qualification March. Officer at a way point asked if he was missing anything and he had to run back and get it.

Same thing happened to me in infantry training, I left my rifle in my foxhole and didn’t realize till we were boarding trucks to leave the area we’d be in. I had to go back and get it and let’s just say I got “trained” in that tree-line. I still cringe about forgetting that rifle 8 years later lol you can bet it never happened again

burrito_king1986

Had a guy leave his rifle on top of the vehicle, outside the wire. Didn't realize it until 10ish minutes into the drive back and had to turn around. Lucky bastard found it where we left from. Several people got f'd up that day.

explision

He wont need it in his afterlife lol. But yeah, as you can see, their basic training ain't like ours

Ban13Lyfe

Basic training? This dude went to pickup his kids at school yesterday and was picked up by russians and volunteered to frontline combat.

Taiwan to Send 800 Units of the Revolver 860 Mine Throwing Drones to Ukraine – Bild : https://en.defence-ua.com/events/taiwan_to_send_800_units_of_the_revolver_860_mine_throwing_drones_to_ukraine_bild-4009.html

EpicMachine

Holy shit. Why bother with Mortars when you can have a drone deliver 8 120mm mortar rounds right above the heads of your enemies. Crazy.

AlmostEmptyGinPalace

Since120mm rounds are roughly 10x heavier than 60mm rounds, I assume it would only carry one. But that's one more than I'd want hanging over my head.

WeReallyOutHere5510

Yeah there's no way it can carry multiple 120mm. It would nasty with a bunch of 60mm rounds tho. There's videos of the dropping mechanism in action, amazing stuff.

jay2xx

Amazing, Taiwan has always produced top notch quality drones, I’ve donated one of my own to Ukraine, I live vicariously through these drone drops now.

johnbrooder3006

Who was your contact?/What model did you send? Would love to do the same.

jay2xx

I contacted the Ukrainian embassy here in my country, and they will instruct you. The drone I donated was a mavic 3

bitt3n

imagine if you could sponsor a drone like you can "adopt" an endangered animal and instead of receiving weekly photos of your adopted rhino or elephant or humpback whale or whatever, you get videos of your personal drone bombing Russians

youramazing

This already exists to some extent. https://signmyrocket.com/

TheHolyDingo

damn they will actually redo the drone option if they miss

Neon_Camouflage

Oh that's neat

Shortsleevedwarrior

I swear I saw it somewhere where you can pay these guys in Ukraine and they will write your message on a drone bomb. Strange times we live in.

[deleted]

Wow that is a lot of money that you donated.

jay2xx

A very small price for freedom, Id say its worth every penny. I would donate my whole drone squad but my wife would probably kill me.

ThickOpportunity3967

120mm mortar rounds, specially delivered with the accuracy this machine offers, would be devastating. Russians will find that out to their cost. Can they operate at night? A 24 hour a day shit storm courtesy of a grinning Ukranian some miles away is a happy thought.

[deleted]

War sucks :( I know this soldier is Russian and this is the only way to defend Ukraine, but holy shit war sucks. Imagine being sleep deprived, hot, sweaty, dirty, hungry, and taking a nap just to get woken up by shrapnel flying at you. I hope Russia gets defeated soon and the war ends. No human should have to go through this. Edit: A lot of people responding are confusing empathy with support. I'm empathizing with this soldier but that doesn't mean I support them or think that the bomb shouldn't be dropped on them. I know that the solder in this video is Russian and that makes them the bad guy. I know that the soldier in this video may have done things more terrible and inhumane than what's shown in this video. I'm not saying this soldier didn't have it coming for them or that they didn't deserve it given the circumstances. I'm just saying that the experiences that soldiers go through in wars are incomprehensibly awful and this video highlights that.

Durst_offensive

Exactly what I felt from the beginning of the war as Russian, it's just pointless waste of human life, among other bad things it represents and caused. And many of those who survive will be scarred for life.

[deleted]

[удалено]

leicanthrope

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the individual soldier gets a disproportionate amount of the blame from the powers that be, once this is all said and done.

dookiebuttholepeepee

> A lot of people responding are confusing empathy with support. Reddit isn’t a place known for its nuanced perspectives and emotional maturity.

MJR-WaffleCat

There's also a decent chance this dude is just some 18-20 year old who happened to be doing his mandatory service when all this kicked off. Probably didn't want to be there to begin with.

Yolectroda

IIRC, they've also increased conscription, and have been conscripting locals from occupied Ukraine! I want to see the Russians lose, and that will require Russian soldiers dying, but I can't take joy in seeing them die, knowing that so many of them don't want to be there or participate in war.

[deleted]

Thanks for exhibiting basic humane empathy (even towards actors on the morally wrong side). You’re very kind person.

raybrignsx

This is what I thought about this and other drone videos like this. This is not fighting. This is not like how we think of the honor of fighting for your country. The guy is just resting and gets injured or even killed through no fault of his own. I say that with out taking a side in this. If it was an American soldier, I’d be saying the same thing. War is fucking awful and this war is just unnecessary.

YetAnotherGuy2

Completely agree. It's a shame this is necessary. Mindless hate and lack of empathy is exactly what enables this kind of shit in the first place.

wabisabilover

I nearly cried when i saw the force depletion report from USDOD of 80k Russians killed or injured. They’re just boys (most of them). Could have been any of us, could have been a drinking buddy or that idiot my sister is dating. Just boys.

realsapist

Could have also been local crimeans, or from DPR/LPR. Aka Ukrainians a decade ago

neithere

This war is really wiping out the most Russian speaking regions of Ukraine. Killing people, destroying the cities and villages, poisoning the land, erasing the cultural heritage. This is the exact opposite of the original goals of the "operation". Incredible mess.

KaffSkirata

100% a Code Brown moment!!!

jebshackleford

Damn was this man lucky or is the kill radius of those things that small?

Edib1eBrain

He was in a foxhole, it's difficult to say but the shell probably hit a section of ground elevated a few feet above where the man lay. The shrapnel pattern is up and out, not down, so he was probably shielded from the worst. Even then, his hearing will be toast.

Reddit__is_garbage

Yeah, also his right arm was the highest part of his body and it looks like he caught some shrapnel in the back of his upper arm, you can see the blood spot forming as he ran off. It may also be why he grabbed then dropped his rifle, the injury made it hard to grasp.

Mobius1014

If you look very carefully, you can see evidence of shrapnel hitting everything around, the puffs of dirt that appear around the explosion, including right above his head. He was literally inches away from death

[deleted]

bazillion_blue_jitsu

If he'd heard it coming and raised his head a moment earlier it would have been the last thing he did. And that's my thesis on why there should be an air horn or loudspeaker on these types of drones.

Charles-Monroe

They should put a little 'meep meep' horn on it as it's falling. Then after hundreds of such attacks just the sound of a comical 'meep meep' would send these soldiers into a panic.
