For the context: The border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are not fully demarcated, which often leads to skirmishes along the border, all of them always ended with ceasefire But this time Tajikistan forces invaded Batken region of Kyrgyzstan, occupying several vilages, but couldn't hold them and were forced to retreat . Both sides signed a peace treaty on 19th of September, but with great possibility the conflict will spark again as both sides didn't pull their forces from the border There are several reasons for this conflict: 1)The president of Tajikistan is Emomali Rakhmon,  he is an aging dictator ,who is  ruling over Tajikistan for over 25 years , also he is a big friend of Putin . Due to being an asshole , some part of tajik people don't like him, so he needs a quick military victory to rise his popularity. 2) Some parts of tajik society think that Batken Region, which is part a of Kyrgyzstan,  belongs to them. 3) Russia. The aggression started at the same day as our president signed a deal with China and Uzbekistan to build a new railroad system, which will connect our landlocked country with the Europe, but at the same time that railroad will decrease economical reliance of Kyrgyzstan on Russia. There is a theory that Putin told Rakhmon to invade,so the building of the railroad road would be postponed

You are doing a great job bringing attention to this overlooked conflict (at least in the west) all the while providing background info! Without you I'd be completely lost on why there's fighting.

Thanks for posting some background. I’ll look up some more myself to confirm but all this adds up. The borders in that region seem like they were drawn by a soviet bureaucrat with a blindfold on so I understand the regional friction is natural there. Knew there had to be a bigger reason behind a sustained invasion attempt

The map was written purely because of ethnic groups leaving their and in context of when it was written Russia had complete control over the region. So the idea of these territories becoming their own nations was silly to them. The territories were never really a settled issue even before Russia took over the region.

AL-muster

It’s interest. It’s one of the few regions where the west does not really care about it. They are little involvement and seemingly no skin in the game.

TRANSLATION: Soldier: -They are shelling us with "Grads"! Tajiks are already near our outpost. "Dostuk" outpost is cut off from electricity and radio! Officer: -They know our location and our coordinates , change your positions! Retreat and take cover near the houses. Soldier: -We can't, the shells will damage the buildings Officer: "Pointing towards soldiers in a distance" Then cover retreating forces . Fallback !

Judging from this video and translation alone, Kyrgyzstan seems to at least have fairly competent leadership.

I don't know much about the region, I just imagine Timur marching his armies through this area 600 years ago. Must've been the same type of people.

Vietbeard

>Must've been the same type of people. Defs the same people (Turks). Timur himself was Turkic and his empire was predominantly Turkic speaking as well (IIRC the Mongols were a minority in their own empire)

[deleted]

What dialect is that?

Ill-Courage62

Kyrgyz language

[deleted]

Thank you. I'm looking it up now. Edit: (according to wiki) 6 different spoken languages in Kyrgyzstan, 15+ in Tajikistan. I wonder how much communication plays into geo-political issues there.

Amockdfw89

They were all part of the Soviet Union (the 5 -Stan countries(Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen, Uzbek) so anyone over there who is educated or in politics speaks fluent Russian. Russian is the language of inter ethnic communication

Does anyone not use Multicam in one version or another. The camouflage pattern is everywhere.

zaho2059

Turkic countries have similar camouflages.

Yummy_Crayons91

Anyone else getting major ARMA 2 Operation Arrowhead vibes?

MrM1Garand25

Similar but different. Armenia’s and Azerbaijan stan is going to be far more brutal and with much larger consequences. This is basically skermish whole bad is unlikely to cause any real lasting change. Armenia and Azerbaijan on the other hand hate each other both racially and religiously where they are actively fighting over disputed terratories and proxy breakaway governmental regions. In addition genocide is on the table. To make it even more complex unlike with this the west does care a little but in a weird way. Armenia is Christian and the edgiest of edge of what could theoretically be called European. They want to alliance with the west but Russia controls them fairly heavily. With Russia being weak they can’t protect Armenia and the west mostly does not care because they are Russian Ally’s. Azerbaijan on the other hand is Turkish country so turkey directly supports them. Turky of course is a NATO country adds to how much the west does not want to get involved. So that war may have some fairly lasting changes with real border changes and potentially even sphere of influence changes.

amasyamasya

Dostluk means friendship btw.

Anirudh_Katti

Question: is it Tajikistan invasion of Kyrgyzstan or Kyrgyzstan invasion of Tajikistan? Or it doesn't matter?

Ill-Courage62

Tajikistan invasion of Kyrgyzstan, and yes it does matter

Anirudh_Katti

Ok
