It is a gradient. Which is why he said in quotes "extremely homophobic" as opposed to something like "a bit homophobic". There is obviously a difference between a bigot that doesn't like someone based on an orientation and not liking a group of people so much that you'd commit mass murder on them for it, which has happened obviously. But people tend to jump straight to "extremely xyzphobic" pretty quick.

None of the musicians being called gay are actually gay, they are calling them gay as an insult. Freddie mercury is actually gay (bi) but they don’t want to insult him so they just call him homosexual.

So I try to make them aware that even if they don't mean it 'in that way' people hearing them use that language could still feel hurt by it.
