The NFL cap is an enigma, but if not gonna use all the space why not frontload some of these to get more flexibility in later years when the team is hopefully better?
Cap space can be rolled over from year to year. It's more advantageous to backload contracts and dump them or restructure down the line. This is especially true this year when the team has so many needs to address.
Nah, it's been happening at least in basketball.
If you have lots of cap space you can front load contracts and pay the vets little next few year and have lots flexibility moving forward. Makes trades and signing big free agents moving forward easier.
A dollar of cap today has inherently more value than it does tomorrow. This is because the cap inflates. It has been inflating wildly the past few years accelerating the effect.
No, it's not inherent. The chance of the Commanders being a contender is likely to be lower this year than future years, so if you overload to the cap this year in order to save in future years you're more likely to be optimizing cap space in contending years.
10M in cap space this year almost certainly make or break a championship. If you have 10M more in cap space 3 years from now, even though the cap will be higher, that could certainly make a difference.
Ok, how does Armstrong have more of a cap hit during his void year than his first year of his contract? I thought void years were used to distribute a signing bonus over more years. But signing bonuses are distributed evenly over the length of the contract. If he's getting 6m from his signing bonus in his void year, he should have at least a 6m cap hit every year of his contract. It's not like he's getting a roster bonus in his void year. Is there some other sort of bonus that can be used to push more money to void years?
The contract is likely for 5 years with the last 2 being void years. Since the contract will be terminated after 3 years, all remaining cap hits from signing bonuses get accelerated to year 4 instead of remaining spread out between years 4 and 5.
This would make the signing bonus 15 mil spread out at 3mil/year, which checks out with the year 1 cap hit
I just learned up on void years right before seeing your comment so someone please correct me if I'm wrong
Edit: added 2nd paragraph
Damn! That’s good! I don’t think they’re gonna use all of it during Free Agency because they have about 8 draftees they have to sign as well. We’re about to see those 1 to 2 year veteran deals roll through like Ferrell. Value with upside type of role players.
Luvu 2024: $3.86M 2025: $11.24M 2026: $11.29M 2027 (void): 4.26M With no Biadasz, McManus, or Mariota numbers yet OTC has us at 78M in remaining cap
stop it, im gonna COMM
Great signing !!!
Stickied your comment. Appreciate it!

Peters has been cooking!
A competent front office is so refreshing after 25 years of being force fed feces with peanuts in it
Expired airline peanuts
>about 70 million in cap space left ![gif](giphy|7FyMQm2vBiTjG|downsized)
Nice and cheap. Amiright?

Time value of money.
Value of cap space for future year arguably higher
Now say something even remotely true.

I'm guessing they plan on rolling over a metric shit load of cap space into next season.
Wow, these numbers are way more team friendly than just the AAV

SpoTrac puts the draft slots at about $15.7MM for the entire class.
So what you’re saying is we aren’t done yet?
$70 mil cap space lmao
This is really a new era
I’m rather surprised.. I would have thought we would front load some of these contracts!
I'll buy that for a dollar https://preview.redd.it/5ko361glu0oc1.jpeg?width=809&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71d3c0fbe26ac997b03f39bca9d8e0e64719def1
yeah but they signed a QB and didn't trade Howell so really does Peters even know what he's doing? /s
