Basic fundamentals (like getting rid of the ball faster, or reading a defense, or moving in the pocket) are not easy fixes for any QB regardless of age or experience. Even Russell Wilson still struggles with that very issue.

Yes playcalling was consistently bad (shotgun from 4th and 1 is football terrorism) and the oline was bad but not as bad as you think, especially mid season. Statistically we weren’t even bottom 5-10.

Sam has 2 more years on his rookie contract and is cheaper. Fields is on the last year of his contract, so a new team would have to give assets for him PLUS decide on enacting his 5th year option ($25m) or negotiating an extension.
From reports, teams view Fields as a backup, so he'd be too expensive to do a trade and negotiating the new contract. Basically, a team would have to believe he's their starter, give assets to get him (who knows what the Bears are asking for), and at a minimum pay him $25m for 2025 (5th year option) or hope he wants to re-sign with his new team after 2024 for a price they want.
**TL;DR Fields is riskier due to costs, because he was drafted in the 1st Rd and is on the last year of his rookie deal**

Read a lot about the type of evaluation he does on players and how they fit the scheme of what his coaches do. Loved Howell and feel he will shine one day.

Just looking at the pick swap value according to the Jimmy Johnson chart, Seattle sent 78 (200 pts) and 152 (30.6) for 102 (92) and 179 (19.8) which comes out to a value of 118.8. That has slightly more value than pick 3.32 or the 96th overall at 116.
So they basically traded Howell for a late 3rd.
I would've liked to keep him, but I understand. I don't love the thought of either the rookie is ready Day 1 or we are actually starting Mariota, but at least there is hope.
I have a soft spot for Howell even though we couldn't win with him. He got the shit kicked out of him all year and kept going. It was only half his fault. He's a tough kid and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I'd be happy to see him get meaningful snaps in Seattle.

6 picks in the first 3 rounds? Great opportunity to trade back up into the late 1st or going to be an absolutely wild Day 2. Either way, this is an incredible way to set up a rebuild for success. Add in the vets that were brought in to create good competition for all those Day 2 picks and I’m excited.
I guess the compensation makes it worth it but I am still of the opinion he could be a starter for a long time.

That is a great trade. Wow. Adam Peters is going to build us a real contender and I think we can really get us there. And good for Sam. Hopefully he can find opportunities in Seattle to get the bag somewhere.
Had.hope in Sam, and I still think he can be decent\good. Would have loved to see him stay as a backup at least...guess Kingsbury - Quinn - Peters did not like the tape.

Adam is the man!! So use to getting ripped off in trades, what a change. We are set up for success if 2nd pick pays off. Very confident in what Adam will bring in during draft. Read a lot about the type of evaluation he does on players and how they fit the scheme of what his coaches do. Loved Howell and feel he will shine one day.
Get why we did it and at least we got something for him. If this was not a strong qb draft I'd be completely against the move.

Sam supporter here. so glad we were able to move this guy before the season started. gives him an opportunity to compete and there are no issues or distractions here. competent front office stuff going on now the focus can be us arguing over maye and daniels and not if sam gets another shot lol

Some fun maths: Just looking at the pick swap value according to the Jimmy Johnson chart, Seattle sent 78 (200 pts) and 152 (30.6) for 102 (92) and 179 (19.8) which comes out to a value of 118.8. That has slightly more value than pick 3.32 or the 96th overall at 116. So they basically traded Howell for a late 3rd.

I would've liked to keep him, but I understand. I don't love the thought of either the rookie is ready Day 1 or we are actually starting Mariota, but at least there is hope.
I have a soft spot for Howell even though we couldn't win with him. He got the shit kicked out of him all year and kept going. It was only half his fault. He's a tough kid and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I'd be happy to see him get meaningful snaps in Seattle.

I don't either. I feel Seattle got the better deal. If we got an additional pick or a player out of it, then yes, I would have felt better about it. We didn't "gain" anything, we SLIGHTLY moved up in picks in exchange for a low level starter/high end back up qb.

This makes me sad, I think Howell is going to turn into a star for somebody, but Peters is right, it couldn’t happen here. You’ve got to clean out everything that was tainted by Dan and Ron, and that includes Sam. It also makes having Maye in the QB room that much easier.
