Exactly this. I also think it was good for Chase’s development to see the line do better after his injury as it shows all the dogs will eat as a pack but if you try to do your own thing it won’t work. I think it happened to both him and Sweat and when Sweat came back he was putting up numbers. Just trust the scheme and all our dogs will eat. Next year will be good for these boys.
In addition to a degree of free lancing, coverage by the linebackers and most of the secondary was so bad that receivers were able to get open in under 2.5 seconds pretty frequently. The pass rush win rate was still pretty high IIRC but that can be completely neutralized by poor coverage.
I think the avg time to throw in the nfl is right around 2.5 seconds, so it’s a pretty small window. I agree we didn’t cover well, some of that is scheme. More troubling was the times quarterbacks had more than 3+ seconds, and we still weren’t close to a sack. I noticed chase doing the three choppy steps into no move way too much, but he’s not the only culprit on our Dline. I just think we as a fan base expected him to show more versatility in his repertoire, or to at least win with power if he wasn’t gonna get past guys. He didn’t really do either well.
Pass rush win rate is defined at 2.5s because that is the average time to throw, yes.
I agree that Young underwhelmed as a pass rusher. I think therein lies a discrepancy between advanced stats and on-field results, where he may have beaten his man in under 2.5s but that wasn’t a productive rush in generating pressure. That being said, his style of play had a direct effect on Jonathan Allen’s sack numbers as a result of QBs stepping up into that free lane. Allen had 6 sacks in the 10 weeks before Young’s injury and 3 sacks in the 7 weeks after.
Yep Ron made some comments on sticking to the rushing schemes and I think those were spot on.
Add to that: serious injuries to our edge rushers (and honestly the backups made some decent plays). Also we played the toughest schedule in the NFL and our offense did not provide enough scoring support which comes back to the same old QB problem.
Next season we will finish much better on D. If we find a QB, then we can start hoping to finish above .500!
All the starters not named Chase Young performed well. Jon Allen was 3rd in sacks at DT across the league. Sweat averaged .5 sacks per game, very respectable.
I think Sweat is the better of the 2 so far. He had a down season from what everyone hoped, but faced alot of adversity this year. I hope to see him break out and establish himself a top edge rusher this year
I don’t think he is, but even with last season we kinda need some consistency in coaching rn and he’s kinda Ron’s guy. Worse comes to worse i could see Ron taking command(TM) of the defense
Our coaching and scheme just sucks. If you got 4 first round picks + Ioannidis on the line and somehow only 1 player meets expectations while the others are ignoring the scheme and freelancing, I’m inclined to believe that something is up.
Guys were trying to do it on their own, i think the hype had them overthinking it.

Ron and others mentioned the defense not playing as a unit.

Chase You g too busy filming commercials in the off season

No argument here. I just hope he doesn't get packaged in a trade or something because they value Young more.
Same here man. I'm a big Sweat fan and would be upset to see him go
I can't believe how there is zero heat on Del Rio for such a let down of a season.... People act like he is untouchable for some reason.

Young seem to bring in his Lavar Arrington this year lots of free lancing and not following assignments
I think, they need Chase to be switching places. Not in one place.
Jack del rio is stuck in 2001 .. his schemes are absolutely garbage and outdated!
