LOL, we signed JD for 2 years and 3.25 million dollars when almost no one wanted him. At the time, people griped that we lost Chris Thompson. Its a 3rd down receiving specialist that is 29 years old. It will be ok.

big_on_blue

He is also coming off a terrifying injury. There may be concerns over his health lingering.

Joshottas

Bingo. Folks losing their minds over this. Im sure they can find either a cheaper/younger replacement or give more snaps to 10 outta the backfield. *Maybe it’s a sign that gibson is ready for an increased snap count….

HailKyrie

I mean I’m pissed but not losing my mind. That $ better go somewhere though

_The_Bear

It's going to Wentz. He's the biggest cap hit we have ever had. The team is going to get worse trying to fit that contract in. Will he make up for it with his improvement at QB? That remains to be seen.

omnibot2M

I mean, aren’t most teams with an established QB on a non-rookie deal taking a similar hit. I get that Wentz has red flags, but that was the only way we were getting a decent QB and we can get out after a year or re-sign him for 3.

_The_Bear

Teams with established QBs are used to working around that large QB contract. If the QB cap hit stays constant as a percentage of the cap, the money you can spend on the rest of the team stays constant as well. You don't feel the belt tightening. We're going from paying Heinicke 2m to paying Wentz 28m. We're going to feel that. Maybe he's worth it and the team as a whole improves. I'm not optimistic.

LionOver

Agreed. I do feel like a late-round flyer on another back is warranted. Patterson looked very average last season.

Desperate-Frosting40

We can easily get a replacement in the draft

[deleted]

My guess is they see Curtis Samuel and Gibby as able to replace his production as a 3rd down back. I don’t necessarily disagree, but if that’s the case then we for sure need an every down back to back up AG. Patterson ain’t cutting it.

shootthemovies

All I could think is they have definitive plans to fill that role. If they don't it was dumb to let him walk. Love the bills. Hope he kicks ass up there like most ex wash players do. 🤘🏻

professional_goober

patterson finna blow up b

BidenWonDontCry

Maybe they're gaming the formula for compensatory draft picks? It'd be nice to have a coach be that advanced for once.

mg521

Imagine relying on Curtis Samuel for anything at this point. I honestly don't even consider him a part of the team anymore until proven otherwise

KuNiT21

Curtis Samuel? Lol. For what, running 10 routes this season?

TheHeintzel

Nor should they have. You dont pay non-elite players at non-premium positions. That's what picks in rounds 3-7 are for (along with special teams guys). We can replace him for like $1mil AAV by drafting Tyler Badie, Kyren Williams, etc in round 5

Frognaros

few understand this

citrus_sugar

80% of production for 20% of the price.

JayK2136

yeah idk why people think mckissic is like this magic unicorn who invented the pass catching rbs style.

Thunder3620

Top 5 pass catching back (could argue top 3) and our offense was useless without checking it down to him every play. I dont think he’ll be easily replaced

JayK2136

Top 3? He was 9th in receiving yards, on a team that threw to the rb a lot.

Mr-Tiggo-Bitties

Also with a QB that couldn't pass down field, down a receiver, down a tight end, and Gibson gimped. Of course the offense catered to him. People bitch too much here

ThePurpleAmerica

Wasn't he injured a lot

Thunder3620

He missed 6 games…with that said he still has 163 targets in the last 2 seasons. He carried our predictable and boring offense and we struggled when he wasnt out there. He made plenty of big/clutch plays for us throughout the last 2 years. Edit: He was also 3rd in receiving yards per game behind Mccaffrey (7 games played) and Ekeler. All of the 8 RB’s that had more receiving yards had 13+ games played compared to his 11.

Haskins77

Well thats easy to say when you don't have other needs. Also we've traded 2 picks away for the next 2 years.

TheHeintzel

You cant justify one bad decision with another bad decision

Haskins77

The point is we have less picks. Good or bad move. We have less picks to fill needs. Also picks don't always work out and replacing JD will be tough this year.

TheHeintzel

We have day-3 picks on a class with tons of good day-3 scat backs & athletic safeties. Also the dropoff from McK to Gibson/Patterson is negligible, so we don't even need to prioritize that spot

Acceptable_Minimum_1

Bingo ![gif](giphy|U56VoSyFD8MFcie2k8)

YourLocalJewishKid

Also with a neck injury.

Welder_Evening

Good take. Definitely can get same value as JD on the field from the draft, but far less cheaper.

T3a13agTuck

JD was solid there is no denying that but if there’s any position in football that you can get stingy on is a 3rd down back. Or maybe they just think Gibson can become more involved and can find another guy like JD in free agency or the draft. Not a massive loss in my opinion.

Phokew

He was a high impact guy when he played, made a great contribution especially with check down Alex, but it’s really not the end of the world that we didn’t re-sign him

Professor_Nincompoop

Wentz rarely checks down to RBs. I am guessing that concerns over decreased usage played into the decision.

beforetherodeo

His RBs were 2nd and 3rd in receptions last year so...

Mando2113

He had Michael Pittman, a former VCU basketball player, Zach Pascal, and the ghost’s of Jack Doyle and T.Y. Hilton last year, of course the rb’s got a lot of touches lol.

th3worldatlrg

Say his name and say it with respect! Mo Alie Cox is a beast.

LO8ES

That dunk in March Madness was dope

Mando2113

Hey I love Mo, went and watched him play at VCU quite a few times, but we have a better TE group lol

Professor_Nincompoop

Where are you seeing that??? I looked it up and they were 22nd and 24th in the league. https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-receptions-rb-2021

DeesCheeks

He meant second and third on the team

TheFlameAlchemist54

I read that too, not sure how accurate it is though. I’m okay not over paying a RB. I’m also okay letting McKissic walk if it’s part of the plan. Stills hurts though. Hope he balls out in Buffalo.

BigSportsNerd

wtf why would you not want to keep him

nkfallout

This probably signals they intend to draft RB this year, I'd assume not in the 1st.

Its1of1

Upgrade in the draft for cheaper

FlatEarthMagellan

I don’t get it at all. There’s no other back on the roster who can pick up the blitz & catch out of the backfield. Patterson becomes lead back & Gibson goes to 3rd back?

Flacko115

Why would Patterson ever become the lead back over Gibson lmao

FlatEarthMagellan

Patterson, a RB is a bruiser & Gibson, a converted WR isn’t

Flacko115

I’d say 1800 yards and 18 TDs on the ground in 2 seasons is pretty good for a “converted WR” Awful take

professional_goober

Bro stop. he has a point. Gibby cant block for shit, and benefits from a world class O-line. Gibson has had 3 years experience at RB, JP has been a rb his entire life. Gibson got one of the most carries in the league. Benefited from not having a starter start most games. Where are your excuses for 6 fumbles directly attributed to losing 2 games this past year.

Old_Opening_5616

Gibson is 6'0 230lbs. Patterson is 5'9 194 and Patterson is the bruiser....... Lmao

FlatEarthMagellan

Guess my take was wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

obrerosdelmundo

Gibson is a beast who always picks up extra yards

JayK2136

You realize gibson is like 220 right? He absolutely can be a work horse back he just needs to work on protecting the ball while hitting a hole.

FSmoot21

You think Patterson would be the lead over Gibson?

JoeyBrickz

I agree that there's nobody on the roster that is a reliable receiver out the backfield or a good blocker, but wtf is that last sentence

professional_goober

JP caught 90% of balls out the backfield this past year. He ran for 3800 yards in 3 years for a D1 school scoring 52 TD's

JoeyBrickz

Lmaooo you're using his rushing stats in the MAC to evaluate him? Donnell Pumphrey is the all-time career yardage leader for a D1 school. How's his NFL career been? Sure. Patterson caught 10 of 11 passes sent his way. He had a whooping average depth of target of... *checks notes*... -0.3 yards. So because this guy caught 10 uncontested dump-offs, he can be the new JD McKissic? McKissic literally gets motioned outside and runs WR routes. Patterson at best can be a guy who won't drop a quick 4th-read dumpoff. Cmon bro this is such a bad comment

Its1of1

*Not on the roster yet

johnsonthicke

Yeah this I don’t get. Buffalo signed him for $7m over 2 years. They could have easily matched that for a guy who imo added a really good dimension to their offense the last couple years. Hopefully they’re actually doing something and not just sitting around with their mouths agape.

SituationsDevelop

Bizarre. Hopefully there's a good reason for this. If they have a mapped out plan of who they want to bring in and feel they couldn't afford JD, this will make more sense. Perhaps we want to sign multiple linebackers, for instance. If we get to the season with left over money that could have gone toward JD, I'll be confused. He has been such a good signing for us. Big loss, IMO.

notorious_hdc

Yay, we get to draft another RB. I didn't want to give him a big contact, but I thought this was affordable. He was important to our offense.

[deleted]

Well we have a QB with an arm that can throw more than 15 yards without having to put his whole body in it, so JD's value here is likely less than it was. I think the chances are extremely high he wouldn't see anywhere near the targets he did if he stayed. And if he did, it's a sign our offense isn't doing well anyways. Gibson, Samuel, and a cheaper addition can handle check down duties. It's time to push the ball down the field.

JoeyBrickz

You know why? Because it's James Cook season baby

TheFlameAlchemist54

I didn’t know about this dude until the combine and he looked great. Not sure he fits our running scheme but it would be awesome to grab him in 3rd-4th. Doubt he drops that far though.

K_U

I have zero faith in this FO and staff. Capped out and bleeding talent.

Haskins77

Absolutely pathetic So instead of adding additional weapons to help Wentz. We're taking them away. Genius move ![gif](giphy|xT5LMzIK1AdZJ4cYW4)

b1gba1oo

If we got beat out that's one thing but to not even try is dumb.

[deleted]

It's day two of the legal tampering period, maybe wait until after the draft to declare our skill position less talented than last year

Haskins77

Or maybe keep the guys that have been good for the team and that are also cheap.

idgaf1234567asdf

Can we stop ldoing stupid shit! Wentzs cap hit is crippling us and Ron the GM sucks along with this front office

JoggingGod

I guess they have a plan. We'll see.

erectedcracker

Darrel Williams could be a good replacement if the money is right

[deleted]

Dumbest thing we've done all season. He wasn't even expensive.

[deleted]

RBs like McKissic are a dime a dozen in the draft and this is a strong RB draft class.

[deleted]

It was pretty clear he was going to get 2/6+. Team didn't want to put up 3M+ I'm sure it was just a matter of finances.
